. i like chocolate… and breakfast .

April 22, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 82 Comments

You guys… I think I have a problem.

See, I was planning on doing a nice little Easter recap today, but I kind of slacked on the picture front over the weekend, and when I went through my camera to see what I could pull together, I realized that basically 95.8% of the pics I did manage to take looked like this…

Super Kinder

Duchess Mini Cakes

Easter Bunny

Are we seeing a theme here? Can we say raging chocoholic? Because she (he? it?) definitely had a field day over the Easter holidays. Combine all that chocolate with Easter brunches, lunches, and dinners that were full of foods I don’t normally eat, and you’re looking at a girl who’ll be rocking the stretchy pants for at least a week #thankgodforstretchypants.

That being said, my appetite has been a little wonky over the past couple of days, but one thing that I’ll always find room for is breakfast — it’s my favourite meal of the day and there’s no way I’m passing up an opportunity to eat it… especially because doing so would only come back to bite me in the butt big time.

As luck would have it, Mister Arman picked breakfast for this week’s Spill It theme, giving me the perfect excuse to dote on my favourite meal of the day… and the only food I can really think about at this point πŸ˜† So let’s spill the beans on breakfast…

Spill It

1. What is your classic go-to breakfast of choice?
Eggs! Just kidding πŸ˜‰ Oatmeal all the way. I wake up craving oats every morning, even though I’ve been having them for breakfast for years now. I love them so much that if I don’t have them for breakfast for some strange reason, I end up needing to have them for lunch or dinner. Heck, sometimes I’ll eat them for lunch/dinner even after having them for breakfast. And if I find myself getting a little bored? I just change up my toppings. The possibilities are pretty much endless…

Pudding Oats

2. Favourite sweet style breakfast?
Easy peasy! Honey almond butter oats. The honey/AB combo pretty much rocks my socks off right now, which is probably why it shows up in so many of my recipes.

Honey Almond Oats

3. Favourite savoury style breakfast?
Dammit, Arman…. you just had to toss this one in there, didn’t you? This one is a little tough because I wouldn’t really say that I have a favourite savoury breakfast. I’ll eat them on the rare occasion, but they’re not really something that I ever crave. I guess I like eggs well enough, though… but I usually have them for as a breakfast-for-dinner type deal, and I almost always pair them with something sweet like maple syrup or jam.

Easter Egg

(Hey look! A picture from Easter that’s not chocolate! These were the eggs we took to church to bless before diving them up and sharing. More about this in last year’s recap)

4. Share a breakfast recipe you are a fan of – It can be your own or another blogger’s!
I’m going to give you two since I’m feeling generous indecisive. First, my eggy bananafied oats, since I make them basically every morning and they result in what I consider to be a perfect oat consistency/taste…

Unfinished Bedtime Oats

And second, my Banana Oat Greek Yogurt Pancakes, since they’re basically my favourite bowl of oats in a different form πŸ˜‰

Pancakes for Dinner

5. Strangest breakfast you’ve ever eaten?
Strange breakfasts only really tend to happen when I travel. Remember California?

Hotel Breakfast

And Kauai?

Breakfast Bar

I realize that bacon, bagels, hash browns, and eggs are all perfectly normal breakfast foods, but not to a girl who loves her oats! And speaking of oats… do coffee maker oats and airport terminal Starbucks oats count as strange too? ‘Cause those tend to happen more than I care to admit…

Hotel Oatmeal Breakfast
Airport Oatmeal

6. Do you have a typical breakfast routine?
You betcha! I have my mornings pretty much down to a T. Get out of bed; visit bathroom; head to kitchen; make a cup of my favourite tea; put oats on stove; blog/journal/stretch until oats are done; put oats together; eat while blogging; get on with day. I love relaxed mornings, which is probably the main reason why I wake up so dratted early.

Morning Tea

What’s your favourite go-to breakfast?
Do you prefer sweet or savoury breakfasts?
Did you get an Easter basket this year? What was in it??

My favorite go-to breakfast is also oats! I eat them everyday, and I love forward to it every morning. I usually put cinnamon and stevia in and then either a banana or mixed berries. Yummmm.
I also prefer sweet breakfasts. It’s rare that I eat anything besides oatmeal.
My mom got me an Easter basket. She will never give this tradition up, and I’m not complaining… I got running clothes, a new purse, Cadbury eggs, jelly bellies, and nail polish.

Oh yessss for eggy bananafied oats!! One of my favorite breakfasts too.
Lately, I loved to make the Coconut Oatmeal bake – I just tripled the portion and made a huge cake which lasted for 3 (ok, 2) days.
I didn’t get an Easter basket, but you bet I downed a whole hige Lindt golden bunny and countless chocolate eggs. No wonder I feel fat πŸ™‚

You’re spot on with oatmeal possibilities being endless. Thanks to you I’ve been playing around a lot with mine too. I have yet to add my eggs to it though. I need to remember to try that soon. I’ve always put fresh or frozen berries in mine, but I’ve been adding almond butter and sometimes a handful of nuts too. Seriously, I could eat oatmeal for every meal and desert too. I didn’t really celebrate Easter. I spent the day relaxing and ejoying the outdoors which was much needed after what I’ve been through these past weeks.

My favorite go-to breakfast is toast or an English muffin with peanut butter, honey, and bananas. However, all I’ve been eating lately is oatmeal. I’m all about sweet breakfasts at home where I or my Mom can make it. At restaurants I tend to shoot for the more savory breakfast because restaurants go a little overboard with sweet breakfasts. Your pictures of oats always look so delicious!!

Yes love a relaxed morning! In fact, your’s sounds pretty much identical to mine!
Sweet breakfasts all the way, unless perhaps it’s been a particularly…late night the night before if you catch my drift πŸ˜‰
It’s usually a toss up between oats and pancakes, depending on time and mood… I would probably say pancakes normally win though as I make 2 thin crepe style ones which equals 2 different toppings for indecisive me πŸ˜€

I really don’t eat breakfast – I know, I know! – but my favorite breakfast for any other meal is DEFINITELY oats. Once a day; every day. For some reason, I love the melty nut butter on the top. I’m definitely all about sweet breakfasts, but sometimes I do have a craving for a scrabbled egg sandwich or a dippy egg!

We always have Easter baskets in our house. My brothers are 29 + 30 and my mom STILL gives one to them, so I know I have a lot of years left πŸ™‚ We always get chocolate, peeps, and some mun-ay! Never a bad thing πŸ˜‰

I could totally skip breakfast and be happy, and I wish I had more time to make breakfast and enjoy it every morning, but lately I’ve been choosing sleep over eating. Priorities. One of my favorite “normal” breakfasts is a huge ass yogurt bowl with tons of fresh fruit and maybe some granola. My favorite exciting breakfast? French toast, potato hash, BACON!

I go through grooves with my breakfast choices hut lately I’m all about the sweet, either as baked oatmeal or overnight oats. I know people say that eating sweet first thing in the morning spirals our cravings out of control but fortunately the opposite holds true for me. I much prefer having my eggs as lunch or dinner!

Do you usually add some sort of fruit to your oats? What is your usual topping(s). I love oats for breakfast….unfortunately, I don’t think my tummy does, so I go for cream of buckwheat with pb and blueberries and chia. I go for this over any type of savory breakfast! I’m with you…savory is for a dinner or lunch meal.

Growing up with sweet breakfasts [think all-kinds-of-granola-at-hand mixed in a bowl with lots of milk or – as an occasional Sunday treat – chocolate-filled croissants] I’m not surprised this one stuck with me. Only it’s my oat bran/ wheat bran/ steel-cut oats mix these days and almond butter is a necessity. Imagine my delight when I ran out while at my parents for the Easter weekend… Note to self: tahini does NOT make for a good almond butter sub.
I didn’t get an Easter basket though we actually never got ones so I wonder if it’s not a tradition over here? But we did go for Easter egg hunts as children – not anymore now, either, stank eye to my parents. At least my mum tried to make up for the lack by gifting me with a bar of Lindt when I headed straight for the chocolate aisle at the store :).
