. WIAW … vacations make me do strange things .

February 5, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 114 Comments

Happy What I Ate Wednesday, friends! πŸ˜€

I missed out on all the foodie fun last week since I was too busy running around Disneyland, but that just means I get to share my vacation eats with you this week instead. I know I usually try to showcase everything I eat in a single day, but vacations always call for exceptions, no? So without further ado, some highlights of What I Ate [in California]… And please excuse the iPhone pics — Mr. DSLR stayed at home.

WIAW

Prepare yourself for the most un-Amanda-like breakfast[s] that you’ll ever see here on Spoons…

Hotel Breakfast

The first hotel we stayed at came with free breakfast, so I figured… when in Rome California, why not start the day with roasted potatoes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and a cheesed-up bagel… so I did. Not gonna lie — it was weird… but also delicious. Is it a breakfast that I’ll make part of my regular rotation? Probably not, but it was a nice little change nonetheless. I also recall a morning with pancakes, and one with yogurt, fruit, and cereal, but I’m afraid you’ll have to use your imagination for those ones.

And now for a breakfast that’s so painfully Amanda — behold the wonder that is hotel room oatmeal…

Hotel Room Oatmeal

Justin’s [classic] almond butter, plain Greek yogurt, and a packet of instant oatmeal made with hot water from the in-room coffee maker and eaten out of a disposable coffee cup. I also squeezed in a few packets of honey that I managed to ninja from Starbucks — it was deliciously wonderful πŸ˜€ My only complaint was the lack of cinnamon, but that was my own fault for leaving home without it (lesson learned).

Next up we’ve got lunch[es], which were often made up of packed (read: squished and unattractive) sandwiches, but also had some more noteworthy moments…

Quiznos Classic Club Sub

Classic Club sub from Quiznos.

BBQ Chicken Pizza

BBQ chicken pizza from La Brea Bakery.

La Brea Almond Salad

La Brea Bread Basket

[I forget what kind of] salad and freshly baked bread from La Brea Bakery.

Eating out when you have serious allergies can be kind of stressful (read: I hate it), so when I find a place that feels safe, I stick to it like glue. La Brea Bakery in Downtown Disney happens to be one of those places, especially since it was where we ate last time we came to Disney and I lived to tell the tale πŸ˜‰ That’s probably why we had a few of our dinner[s] there as well…

La Brea Italian Sausage Pizza

Italian sausage pizza.

La Brea Steak Salad

Steak salad.

… with the rest taking place at Chipotle…

Chipotle Burrito

Burrito loaded with chicken, rice, cheese, salsa, and lettuce.

I normally order a bowl or salad when I go to Chipotle, and while I had a few of those on this trip as well, I decided to try something new on our last visit and went with a burrito instead. Holy.wow is all I can say. I think I went a little overboard with the stuffing, because I didn’t manage to finish it all in one sitting.

As for snacks, I’m afraid I don’t have anything too exciting to share, just these Bare Fruit apple chips…

Apple Chips In Universal

And this cappuccino from the Starbucks in California Adventures…

Disneyland Cappuccino

Of course I packed/ate more than that (my suitcase is usually 1/4 food), but it wasn’t anything too exciting — just your run-of-the-mill travel snacks like dried fruit, nuts, granola bars, pretzels, crackers, and bunnies. If you’ll allow me a moment to vent… I’m generally pretty good with accepting my allergies, but I have to say that walking around Disney looking at all the amazing desserts that I couldn’t have was just a kick in the pants. Pesky peanuts — your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries (name that movie!)

But that’s it for me today, friends! I’ll see you guys tomorrow with a Disney themed Thinking Out Loud! πŸ˜€

Gahhh I can’t believe it!! I totally gasped out loud at your breakfast hahaa.. Were you not hankering for almond butter afterward?
Darn allergies..you couldn’t tackle those desserts :(..and I know you’ve got a sweet tooth that rivals mine πŸ˜‰
My typical breakfast has to include nut butter, with either toast, oatmeal or cereal..banana/jam/honey.

If you stay at Koa Kea…. you MUST order the lemon soufflΓ© pancakes and the macadamia nut waffles. You can thank me later.

Ha ha. Your “atypical” breakfast made me laugh. I just started reading The Fault in or Stars (and I cannot put it down either – and did you hear they made it into a movie that comes out in June?) and her whole deal about the eggs being only breakfasts foods even made me think of you – here I give you evidence A.

And now your post linking California and Justin’s together reminded me of somehting else you might be able to appreciate. I have a friend that has to travel to California ever moth for work – wa wa. Last fall on her flight home the guy sitting next to her pulle dout some of the travel size pocket of Justins, which got them talking. Turns out she soon discovered she was talking to Justin himself! Talk about celebrity sitings in CA! Too bad he wasn’t walking around Disneylad too. Or was he…

Justin himself! It’s crazy. I didn’t think he really existed. Ha ha. I just checked out the trailer for TFIOS and now I want to see it even more! I finished it last night after a reading marathon. I think I need to start reading more “Teen Fiction”. Apparently it’s more on my level. And I kinda like this it’s less realistic. Why live in the real world if you don’t have to? Thanks so much for the great recommendation!

Ahhh so many good eats! That unattractive sandwich still looks delicious to me, and I think it’s totally ok to eat an “abnormal” breakfast on vacay. When in Cali! I’m obsessed with Chipotle but I don’t eat it nearly enough. Go to order? Salad/brown rice (depending on how hungry I am) topped with chicken, veggies, mild salsa, and guac πŸ™‚

That pizza looks verrrry familiar… We always go to La Brea Bakery for dinner at least once, not because it’s that good, but just because it’s convenient and it’s pizza! Oh, and also Chipotle. Yeahhhh, the burritos are awesome. I usually finish 2/3 for diner, and then eat the other 1/3 for lunch the next day. Oh hell, who am I kidding, I eat the other 1/3 as a post-dinner snack. Hahahaa.

Gah – I can only imagine how hard it must have been trying to eat your way through Disney! Those pizzas from La Brea look fantastic! Any chance you might recreate them with a Spoons twist? πŸ™‚
Your 1st hotel breakfast would be atypical for me – am a nutbutter, chocolate, grains kinda gal.
I am new to Chipotle -I used to frequent Moe’s – but, my sis forced me to go this past Christmas and I have been hooked since – my fav there is a chicken bowl-their portions are huge, and for me definitely a plus to get 2 meals while paying for 1 πŸ˜‰

That BBQ Chicken pizza is just begging me to eat it! Seriously looks awesome!! I think we all have days when we just neeeeeeed to change our breakfast up. Whenever we go out I’m definitely an eggs, bacon, and toast gal so for me a crazy change up would be if I ordered some waffles (which I also adore, but can never justify eating)!! As for Chipotle, I always go with bowls, too!! Though once I tried a burrito with just beans (both of them), veggies, cheese, and salsa. It’s much more manageable than one that’s half rice!

I totally cheated and looked up that movie quote. My initial guess was The Princess Bride, which I have never seen, but it sounded similar to lines I have heard people quote from that movie. So, I was wrong and the actual movie (won’t spoil for other guessers as I am a cheater) I have never seen either. I am so behind on movies!
My breakfasts are similar to yours. I hated eggs in any form until a couple of years ago. Now, I can tolerate them in small amounts as long as there is a high veggie to egg ratio. Never been one for any type of breakfast meat, pancakes, French toast, waffles. Don’t like potatoes. P-I-C-K-Y, no? I eat out of hotel room cups too; surreptitiously slurping down my packed cereal and yogurt (not packed as that might create severe gastrointestinal problems having gone unrefrigerated for several hours. Not to mention yogurt counts as liquid according to TSA agents and therefore cannot be carried on a plane. Such an odd expression, “not to mention” when clearly I did, in fact, mention.) Will now stop sharing every tangent that runs through my mind.
There is a local chain in Southern California, Sharkey’s, that is sort of like Chipotle but all organic, non-GMO. I prefer their fare to Chipotle and like getting “power plates” composed of grilled salmon and a choice of two sides. Nonetheless, sometimes a bean and cheese burrito just hits the spot.
    Have a lovely Wednesday!

Oh girl, I definitely recommend seeing the movie! It’s one of my favourites, and one that I quote on a regular basis. And the yogurt being a liquid thing is definitely strange. Although I’ve managed to get it through a few times, but it was mixed with a lot of cereal and fruit so I dunno…

You ate a savoury breakfast? I feel like I don’t even know who you are anymore….;-) While I eat eggs for breakfast quite often, I definitely need a sweet element in there as well. So a completely savoury breakfast is unusual for me…which tends to happen whenever I end up at a diner. Although then I’ll usually get a pancake on the side, just so my sweet tooth is happy.

An atypical breakfast for me would be a skillet of some sort or some pastry (including bagels) or anything with potatoes.

Don’t feel bad, I NEVER finish anything at Chipotle in one sitting. I love it…because then it means I get another meal/day out of eating it πŸ˜‰ I typically get a veggie burrito bowl and make sure that they put the guac on it (it comes included in the meal price for vegetarian bowls) πŸ™‚

I am glad you had a good time on travel. It all looks pretty good. I must be in the minority but I’ve always found Chipoltle to not be filling enough. I normally have to add more things to get enough food.

The only real atypical breakfast for me would be not having breakfast or oatmeal actually. Everytime I’ve eaten oatmeal I’m always hungry an hour later…so I stopped with that long ago. I guess it makes it atypical for me.

Whichever movie that quote is from – I’m always bad at naming them whenever a blogger asks for them – it’s really cute. Not so cute: your peanut allergy. Why the fizzle do they have to sneak into just about every food? When I mailed you I’d originally planned to send a little package with a few bars, chocolate or the likes but I swear everything I picked up had a peanut [traces] warning so I decided not to risk anything.
Your atypical breakfast would be my atypical breakfast, too. Even back in the day I can’t remember I’ve ever eaten anything like it for breakfast. Lunch, maybe. But not for my first meal. A random odd note: my sister has eaten cold [homemade] potato salad several times before in previous years. I’m not sure she’d still go for it … but you never know.

Savory breakfasts are totally not me also! Fun fact: I don’t like potatoes OR bacon. Occasionally I’ll have eggs with breakfast but they always have to be with something sweet like oats or nut butter! And I’ve never had Chipotle. I know I’m missing out. I just don’t have one near me! πŸ™ You seriously had some yummyyummy eats on your trip!!

YEAH! You got your Chipotle fix πŸ˜€ I opt for the salad with black beans, corn salsa, mild salsa, fajita veggies, and a big heaping of guac. There’s NO way I could eat an entire burrito unless I was a starvin’ Marvin. They are the size of tiny babies. Lol

Your breakfast looks AWESOME. And your right, when in California (vacation)… It’s just right to eat a breakfast like this one! I still wish you could have gotten Mickey Mouse pancakes!!!

An atypical breakfast for me is a savory dish. I don’t usually go for eggs and such in the mornings. I’m usually an oatmeal or pancake kinda gal. As much as I LOVE eggs, bacon, and all that jazz, and I usually save those for brunch, lunch, or dinner!

Go-to Chipotle order: their salad loaded with chicken, veggies, black beans, brown rice, cheese, and guac!

I love vacation food. Something about just tastes better…maybe because I relax a lot and have what I want without overthinking…better about that in real life too thankfully, but it seems a lot easier on vacation. I think a completely un Caitlin breakfast would either be yogurt and fruit/granola or a breakfast sandwich. Not a huge yogurt fan (although I love granola) and as much as I enjoy bagels/English muffins/toast and eggs, I don’t like them together as a sandwich. I’m a weird one but I’m ok with that πŸ˜‰

You were smart for packing some sandwiches for Disney. Food inside is so expensive! I guess I don’t know exactly how Disneyland is, but in Disney World, once you are inside, you don’t leave until it’s night time and you’re ready to go home. So you’re stuck either paying $10 for a slice of pizza and a water or you have to bring your own stuff!

Hey, did you know that you can take any kind of almonds and make almond butter out of them.. I just recently did dark chocolate almonds and it turned out good!!! I just put them in a food processor or blender (3 cups) and blend for a little bit.. had to stop ocasionally and push the nuts down and then keep blending.. eventually about 10-15 min. later it starts looking like almond butter!!!!! Also have you tried flavored honey? I have a store near by that sells cinnamon, blueberry, raspberry, lemon, and some more flavored honey..
