There’s nothing better than cutting into a new avocado and finding it perfectly ripe.

I mean, okay. There are better things, obviously (happiness of loved ones, winning the lottery, puppies), but ripe avocados are definitely one of life’s little joys. Well, unless you don’t like avocados, I suppose. Or you don’t know they exist.

Which does happen! I come from a Polish family and avocado isn’t really an ingredient you find in traditional Polish cooking, so I didn’t have my first taste until I discovered it in my mid-twenties (from reading food blogs, actually). But it was love at first bite and it’s been a staple in my diet ever since.

Sometimes I even get a little crazy and put it in my smoothies. And I know what you’re thinking. And I know it doesn’t sound like it should work in your mind, but promise me that you’ll abandon any negative preconceptions you might have and try it out at least once. Promise me!

Look! I even made you a cherry avocado smoothie so you can try it for yourself!

And please note that this smoothie passes the floating spoon test with flying colours. All thanks to our star ingredient – the avocado.

But in all seriousness, adding avocado to smoothies is pretty amazing. It gives them this light, pillowy creaminess that’s almost like a mousse… only without the chocolate in this case. And I promise you that you can’t taste the avocado at all. Your smoothie isn’t going to suddenly turn in to guacamole; it’s just going to become lighter and pillow-ier… which might be a really confusing way to describe it, but I don’t really have any other words for it. Heck, I don’t even have any replacement suggestions for the avocado because I haven’t found any other ingredient that does what an avocado does… they’re just that good.

And as an added bonus, you get a nice dose of healthy fats and vitamin E, which works wonders for your hair and skin.

BUT! As good as avocado is, it needs a little help from its friends… and that’s where the yogurt comes in. I made a few different versions of this smoothie and I didn’t LOVE, love it until I added the yogurt. It wasn’t a texture thing, but a taste one. The yogurt adds just the right amount of tanginess to the smoothie to balance out the sweetness. Perfect.

I used a coconut-based yogurt to make this smoothie vegan, but you can use any yogurt you have on hand. I just recommend using a plain yogurt rather than a flavoured one because the tanginess is what you want, and the smoothie is already plenty sweet from the cherries and bananas.

Happy eating!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240 ml) unsweetened vanilla almond milk*
  • 1 cup (140 g) frozen sweet cherries
  • 1 medium-size (100 g) ripe banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup (110 g) plain coconut yogurt**
  • 1/2 ripe avocado (~50 g)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients into any standard blender in the order listed and process on high until smooth. Transfer to a glass, top with desired toppings, and enjoy!

Notes

* Replace this with another non-dairy milk alternative like soy, oat, or rice milk to make this smoothie nut-free.

** You can use any yogurt you have on hand, even a dairy one if you don’t need this to be vegan. I do recommend using plain over flavoured.

Wow, this was so very good!!! I had to make a couple of changes based on what We had on hand. We omitted the banana because we didn’t have any and we used canned coconut milk that had been in the refrigerator. Normally I would wait to rate the recipe until I could try it as written but this was so wonderful, I just couldn’t wait! Thank you for sharing.

Made one of these yesterday, before reading this… I did it with 1, 1/2 cups of fresh cherries (love my cherry popper), 1 smallish banana, 1 cup of yogurt, 1 teaspoon of organic Moringa powder (leaves), and one avocado (peeled and seed removed, of course) I learned that if I add about 5 or six ice cubes to the mix, it cools everything down and helps break down the fruit a bit better. Yuuum! Thanks for listening. d-_-b
