. little things that lift the funk .

April 8, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 98 Comments

Oh hi there…

Lamb Face

That lamb has absolutely nothing to do with anything, but it makes me smile and I was hoping to get a smile out of you guy too on what is so far a chilly (-12C/10F) Monday morning. Did it work? Marvelous!

Truth be told, I’m not feeling like my normal peppy self this morning. Maybe it’s the minor sleep debt that I managed to accumulate over the weekend, or maybe it’s the fact that it’s been gray and snowy for the past three days and I’m so over this crap weather… whatever it is, I’ve just been feeling a bit blah. BUT! there’s no use dwelling on it, right? As the lovely Diva is always reminding us, there’s always something to find happiness in, so let’s look at some of the marvelous things I can come up with…

MiMM

. – . – . – .

Movie nights. I’m not much of a movie watcher and it usually takes me a good two or three sits to get through most movies because I find my attention starts to wander about 20 minutes in, but when the family pulled a movie marathon on my mom’s birthday, I kind of found myself getting sucked in and managed to sit through [most of] The Hobbit and Life of Pi. This may or may not have contributed to my aforementioned sleep debt.

Movie Marathon

Quiet mornings. No matter how late I go to bed, I always seem to naturally wake up around 5 or 5:30, and I kind of love it. I’m not a big fan of starting my day in a crazy rush, so being able to sit down and calmly sip tea, eat breakfast, and chill on the computer for a little while before having to walk out the door makes me a happy camper.

Morning Tea

Cupcakes. No explanation needed, really… except maybe to say that these carrot cake banana cupcakes may taste even better after they’ve been sitting in the fridge for a couple of days.

Leftover Cupcakes

Pretty home accents. I spent a little bit of time putting together various “accent bowls” over the weekend, and I’m really happy with the way they turned out.

Potpurri

Fresh flowers. Even though it definitely doesn’t feel like spring outside, at least it can feel a little bit like spring inside. I love buying fresh flowers to brighten up a room.

Fresh Flowers

Fresh fruit. Summer come soon so I can eat all the fresh fruit. I had a couple of perfectly ripe mangos over the weekend, and holy.wow were they ever good.

Fresh Mango

Perfect cappuccinos. I always hold my breath when I order cappuccinos at Bux because I never really know how they’re going to turn out. After having way too many cappuccinos that are actually lattes, I never take a good one for granted – especially when the foam comes out perfectly creamy instead of airy and fluffy. Coffee lovers know what I’m talking about, right?

Perfect Cappuccino

Makeup samples. My inner beauty junkie goes a little crazy for things like this.

Makeup Samples

Mountain getaways. I may or may not have booked another snowboarding trip for this coming Saturday, and I may or may not be ridiculously excited about it.

Beautiful Mountains
Sun on the Slopes

. – . – . – .

Huh, would you look at that… I’m actually feeling considerably better than I did when I started writing this post. I’ll admit that sometimes it feels a little wonky to try and come up with a list of things that are good in my life when all I really want to do is wallow in negativity, but taking a little bit of time to stop and take inventory of all the little things that add up to make a really big difference in my life really does work wonders when it comes to lifting me out of that funk.

So on that note, I’m wishing you guys a happy and hope you’re having a great one!

Are you a morning person?
What was the last movie you watched?
What’s something good that happened so far today?

Perfectly ripe mangos make my life! Had some this morning in my oatmeal and it was the best way to start a Monday – mmm soo good! I’m with you on getting up early too, my body seems to do it naturally but it doesn’t bother me because I love being quiet and having some time to chill before the loudness and busyess of the day.

    Have a great Monday!

Totally a morning person, but I’m sure you already knew that! You may be more of a coffee fiend than I am – I can’t tell you the difference between a cappuccino and a latte. I’m more of a latte person, though! 🙂

The little things all add up to make one big thing to be grateful for, I love keeping my eye on the small bits of the larger picture 🙂 Total morning person here, my body clock is set. I like the jumpstart on the day. We watched “Friends with Kids” over the weekend, it was ok, somewhat funny. So far today I’m loving that it’s warmer out (sorry, not trying to rub it in) & that I can go home & lounge with the windows open after work!

Hmm, I love mornings, for sure my fav time of day and I am hopeless at night, I get tired by 10.. buut I am a sleep person above all else, I have to get at least 8 hours or I’m ridiculous. So as much as I love mornings, if I have a late night or when I (used to) work nights (bartending) I have to sleep in. Mind you, I fall asleep the moment my head hits the pillow (no joke) so I’m never up too late! I’m a crazy heavy sleeper.. I’ve slept through many a smoke alarm.
The latest movie I saw was Olympus Has Fallen, this weekend.. it’s really good if you like a thriller movie. The ‘president’ is pretty hunky too 😉 I am such a movie person..But my boyfriend can only invest if it’s really good or in the theatre with popcorn. I also like to re-watch movies! Like a kid I guess.. I could still recite both The Little Mermaid and Clueless anytime lol.

    I’m definitely a morning person.

Watched “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” Love Ryan Gosling and that movie always makes me laugh out loud.

I’m getting good feedback on a video I posted about my birthday, so that’s something good.

I hope you feel 100% better!! Stay positive!! xx

Woo another snowboarding trip! That’s awesome. It’s always a blast to hit the slopes whenever possible 🙂 And I love the home decor adventures from this weekend! I love doing little things here and there to spruce up the apartment. I really want to buy new decorative pillows for our living room, but the dog loves to sleep on them so I don’t know if it’s worth it haha

That is indeed chilly. Actually I consider it beeyond chilly. Sorry about the wintery weather you’re experiencing 🙁 But your upcoming snowboarding trip is definitely something to look forward to! Sounds like SO much fun!!
I’m definitely a morning person, but not 5am early. Although I would love to be able to just automatically wake up at that time. Early mornings are the best because they just have this nice calm to them.
I’ve found that I’m having a harder and harder time sitting through movies. I guess either I’m just growing more restless or movies are getting worse. It’s probably the former rather than the latter…

Effing snow, hey?! On Saturday we were laying outside in the backyard soaking up sun…. 24 hrs later, we had to reassemble the dog sled team & icepicks. I’m so sick of it!!! I predict suicide in my near future.

I have no movie attention span either!!! Drives Court crazy. I think it must be a woman thing. Although, I did manage to sit through Apocalypto over the wknd – I really liked it! I LOVED Life of Pi too, which was a surprise, since I never like the movie as much as the book.

I’m so NOT a morning person though I wish I was as all people who are seem to be a lot more productive in general, too. I wonder whether it’s possible to change from night owl to early bird?
As for the last movie I watched I have to admit it’s still Tangled. I’d meant to watch another one of the newer, animated Disney movies but I just can’t decide. Can you help me? You’re the Disney movie expert after all :).

It’s definitely possible to change! I used to be the biggest night owl, going to bed at 2 or 3 every night and waking up at 10 or 11. Now it’s like the complete opposite.

As for Disney movies, have you seen Brave? I really loved that one 🙂

Ugh, I used to be a morning person – I miss it so much. Now I always feel so dizzy and depressed (low blood pressure problems + I can’t really stand facing the day) I don’t tend to drag myself out of bed until 7:15-8:00, and I feel so guilty because everyone in blogland is up and running (sometimes literally) at 4:30-5:30. Gah, I’m so lazy.

Last movie I saw was yesterday, and it was Silver Linings Playbook – it really surprised me in a good way, because I’ll be the first to point out if someone is oversimplifying bipolar disorder. Thankfully I related a lot to the protagonist (including the insomnia/manic episodes during the night!) and thought the movie was sensitive and touching. Although I’m not so sure Jennifer Lawrence deserved an Oscar for it…all she had to do was shout all the time!

Aww Jess, that’s not being lazy. I suffer from low blood pressure that tends to hit me pretty hard some mornings as well, so I definitely know how difficult it can be to deal with that kind of thing. And I really enjoyed Silver Linings Playbook as well, although I’m pretty sure that that was partially because I didn’t go in there with high expectations.

I am absolutely a morning person. I get up, get things done, and that sets the town for the rest of my day! I’m not very good at watching movies, either, but the last one I watched was Wedding Crashers. Many people ask me “Have you seen….?” And about 92% of the time, the answer is “no.” Something good today… I woke up, I’m breathing, the sun is smiling, and I got in a four mile run this morning after being in a sort of running funk due to injury. Happy happy girl!

Man, I have been in a huge funk recently, so all of these were good reminders. Unfortunately, I don’t have much access to mountains, but I could definitely get my hands on some cupcakes. I’m very impressed that you were able to sit through the Hobbit. I only did it because I was in the theatre with a die-hard Tolkein fan. I’m sorry, but 1 book stretched into 3 3-hour movies is not my thing; too many orcs. Very impressed that you could find perfectly ripe mangos too. They are probably my favourite fruit when they are just right, but getting them just right is hard. Have a marvelous one <3

I had to Google the difference between cappuccinos and lattes before I started ordering them too 😉 Both are espresso based drinks, but lattes have a lot more milk which results in a milder coffee taste, while cappuccinos have less milk and more foam, so the coffee taste in those is a lot stronger.

You KNOW I’m all about the little things so I loved this post- sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest impact on our overall mood. Sorry to hear you woke up feeling less than par- hopefully a peaceful morning and some fresh fruit in your yogurt bowl is slowly during the trick ;)! If not, a mid-morning cappuccino is definitely in order ;)! I am so guilty of asking the baristas at Starbucks to remake my caps due to lack of foam. I feel horrible asking but I paid for a cappuccino, not a latte!

Although the idea of waking up at 5 am makes me shudder (sorry girl), I am definitely a morning person. I would rather wake up 45 minutes earlier than have a rushed morning. Starting my day off on the right start makes such a difference to how the rest of my day pans out.

Ugh I hate asking them to remake my coffee too, but if I had wanted a latte, I would have ordered one. The worst is when you ask them to remake it and it still sucks the second time around 😕
