. WIAW … just the facts .

May 7, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 106 Comments

Happy [What I Ate] Wednesday lovely ladies people! πŸ˜€

Since last week’s WIAW was a little on the lengthier side, I’m going to do my best to keep things less wordy this time around — we’ll see how successful I actually end up being with that. So instead of devoting too much of my word count to an intro where I most likely fail at being witty and charming, we’re going to cut to the chase and talk cold hard facts instead…

WIAW

Breakfast…

Honey Almond Oats

Eggy bananafied oats layered with plain Greek yogurt and topped with homemade applesauce, honey, cinnamon, and almond butter.

Fact: I prefer eating my oats cold… and I’m not talking about the overnight kind (not a fan!). I like my oats cooked on the stovetop and then cooled to room temperature. I’m huge on textures, and I find that this method gives my oats the thicker, poofier, doughier texture that I absolutely adore. Runny, soupy oats are a no-go in the Spoons kitchen!

Morning snack…

Raspberry Oat Bar

A chocolate covered raspberry oat bar alongside an Americano from Bux.

Fact: I crave chocolate in the morning… and pretty much every other time of the day, but around 9 or 10 AM especially. I blame this on the fact that that’s when I drink my coffee, and coffee just tastes better when paired with chocolate. But hey… at least chocolate comes from plants, and is therefore a healthy choice πŸ˜‰

Lunch…

Avocado Snack Plate

A snack plate filled with: a Dr. Kracker crispbread, half an avocado [that I had to butcher and reconstruct because the bottom half was brown], roasted kabocha, dried pears, and cottage cheese with raspberry jam.

Fact: Cottage cheese doesn’t always agree with me… but I eat it anyways. I don’t know what it is, but my stomach and I don’t always see eye-to-eye when it comes to cottage cheese. Whereas I love the stuff, my stomach isn’t really the biggest fan and tends to make a fuss while I try to enjoy myself. You’d think that would be enough to keep me away from it, but no… the slight discomfort is [usually] worth it, especially since it isn’t a guaranteed thing.

Afternoon snack…

Creamy Chocolate Shake

A thick and creamy chocolate smoothie.

Fact: This smoothie tastes like melted chocolate ice cream… which is probably why I love it so much. I think I’ve had one of these almost every day since I posted the recipe back in February, and yeah… that’s really all there is to say about that.

Dinner…

Crepes For Dinner

Crepes stuffed with cottage cheese and blueberry jam, with a banana on the side.

Fact: I will never get tired of eating breakfast for dinner… ever. This would probably be a little different if I was cooking for someone other than myself, but I’m taking full advantage of the fact that I don’t have to right now and enjoying brinner multiple times a week. Also, blueberry jam is the best jam there is. Also, what veggies? 😯

Evening snack…

Chewy Granola Bar

A soft and chewy protein granola bar with a side of plain Greek yogurt.

Fact: I’m buried up to my eyeballs in snack bars… which isn’t actually a horrible problem to have. They’re easily my favourite thing to make and eat at the moment, but I have a feeling I should probably lay off before I get sick of them. Or just start pawning them off on people — any takers?

See you guys tomorrow for Thinking Out Loud! πŸ˜€

I’m sorry you feel that way! I just tend to eat a lot of the same things because that’s what I love and I don’t really like spending too much time thinking about new and exciting things to try. Probably why I only blog about my eats one day a week πŸ™‚

your wiaw are wonderful to read!! Eat whatever you crave. Life is too short! Keep it simple, I say. I don’t like to spend time thinking about new and exciting things either. Too much trouble. I go with the oldies but goodies and usually just rotate dinners.

If you have too many snack bars you can always send some to the states, lexington specifically :). Looks like a great day of eats, I typically eat cold oatmeal at work every morning. I like oatmeal best when it has sat for awhile and thickened up.

It’s actually just a recipe that my mom taught me how to make. I keep meaning to post about it but the measurements aren’t exact — I just keep adding things until the texture is right. Hopefully I can get around to it one day…

I’m a big fan of overnight oats! Speaking of, though, oats are one of those foods I sometimes tolerate just fine and other times can’t. Soaking them overnight seems to make them much more tolerable.

I used to have that problem with oats, but I find that I do much better when I use quick oats as opposed to old fashioned or steel cut. Apparently my stomach just isn’t a fan of having to process harder-to-digest grains.

I am with ya on the cottage cheese! I love that stuff and sometimes it’s not that bad either haha so worth a little torture!

I haven’t tried overnight oats yet. I hear good things about them but I didn’t know they are eaten cold. That’s a tid bit weird. I think Id prefer cereal if I’m going to eat something cold for breakfast.

When it comes to making my oats, I actually cook them, then let them cool, before heating them up again. That gives them that poofy/doughy texture but I still get to melt brown sugar on top! And YES. For me, coffee and chocolate are better soul mates than chocolate and peanut butter. I’m not even sure why, but a small bite of chocolate before a sip of coffee makes your cup of ‘Jo 5 million times better. Magic, I tell ya.

Not a fan of overnight oats. Huge fan of homemade applesauce. Every time you mention it I get a craving but, so far, have been too lazy to accommodate.
I have mild sensitivities to certain veggies (cruciferous critters) and grains. I always cook them but they still play havoc on the tummy. I really want to try Kabocha but other winter squashes produce the dreaded squash belly and I am quite certain I would like Kabocha therefore ensuring a battle between taste and tummy.
Fact: cacao powder was a terrific investment, its presence in my smoothies makes me smile πŸ™‚

What is it about cottage cheese, really? While I’ve been eating it almost every day for the past weeks it doesn’t actually sit too well with me and it seems like that for many people. Same goes for Greek yogurt. I still tend to play it down but looking back I can remember numerous occasions in the past years when eating it was followed my… discomfort not to get all TMI here.
By the way: your lunch snack plate looks like an artwork. As is that dinner plate which also has me craving blueberries like crazy. Maybe you should consider catering as a second business. Or third after your hopfully-to-be-started-soon snack bar company.

Overnight oats: depends on the season. Actually no, that’s a lie. Depends on my recent breakfast moods. I was on a kick for the longest time not too long ago.
Now that there’s a chill in the air, my chocolate cravings have gone up a few notches..I suppose I need that extra heat to keep warm πŸ˜‰ .

I have never tried overnight oats, but I don’t think I’d be a fan. I actually like my oats with very little water in them, so they’re almost still pretty dry – Is that weird?! I then add my AB or PB and microwave it to get that to melt down. I’m a big fan of room temperature oats too!

I definitely can’t do dairy. Buuuut I always crave froyo. That’s an issue haha.

What times do you usually eat your after-dinner snacks? I find that if I eat past 7 I don’t always digest well! I looove granola bars as late night snacks πŸ™‚ Or even just a big bowl of peas (Weird, yes.)

I think that we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t shirk our body every now and then, within reason. I try to avoid giving myself too much discomfort, but I allow myself certain types of gum as a treat, even though it makes my lower regions rumbley–trident is fine for me, but orbit, extra, and a few others have a certain sugar alcohol that just is iffy for the stomach.
And I love blueberries in cottage cheese. I had it last night too! I’m about to have them stirred into egg white oats with some nut butter too. MMMMmmmm love breakfast.
