. WIAW … what i ate in kauai .

March 12, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 78 Comments

Home sweet home πŸ˜€

I actually flew in yesterday morning, but after being awake for 36+ hours, I passed out about 5 seconds after I walked through the door. Okay, that’s not entirely true. I was basically too exhausted to fall asleep, so after tossing and turning for a little while, I puttered around my place and made it look like I was trying to clean out my suitcase for a couple of hours before finally passing out on my couch. Unfortunately, I only managed to stay asleep for about 1.5 hours, so that coupled with some serious jet lag has me feeling a bit like a zombie today 😯

But enough about me… how have you guys been?!? I’ve missed you! I managed to do a little bit of blog reading while I was away, but rushed vacation reading definitely isn’t the same as actually being able to sit down and spend some quality time catching up. Call me nerdy, but I really do enjoy it. That’s enough sappiness for now, though — let’s get to the good stuff.

I hope you guys don’t mind if I spent the next couple of days talking about my trip, but I need to do it while it’s fresh in my mind or I’ll never get around to it. I promise not to go overboard on the recaps — since I know that can get a bit dull — but I did want to share a few things from my travels, starting with What I Ate Wednesday in Hawaii…

WIAW

Let’s kick things off with my absolute favourite part — ALL the fresh fruit…

Kauai Farmers Market

Fresh Coconuts

Fresh Papaya

Fresh Pineapple

Oh.em.geeeeeee. With all the farmers’ markets and roadside stands sprinkled all over Kauai, I’m pretty sure I ate my weight in fruit over the past week. From papayas, to bananas, to mangoes, to pineapples, I just couldn’t seem to get enough. In my defense, though, I had to load up while I could — the tropical fruit we get back home is nothing like the fresh fruit they have on the island. So sweet, so juicy, and so cute…

Teeny Tiny Banana
Candy Apple Bananas

Yep… I’m pretty sure I would have been satisfied living solely off fruit the entire time I was down there, but don’t worry — I still managed to squeeze in plenty of non-fruit eats as well.

Since I still wake up ridiculously early even on vacation, breakfasts were usually eaten in the hotel room (courtesy of the in-room coffee maker) and contained all the usual suspects…

Typical Hotel Breakfast

Oats. Almond butter. Yogurt. Banana. Nothing too fancy, but it did a good job of holding me over until the rest of the world woke up and we could go out and grab some grub.

Remember how I said that vacations make me do strange things? This time was no exception…

Breakfast Bar

Breakfast bar at Kukui’s on Kalapaki Beach — bacon, eggs Benedict, hash browns, roast beef, some kind of veggie/rice salad, and raw salmon that I didn’t end up eating *shudder*

Dukes Mango BBQ Ribs

Mango BBQ ribs at Duke’s.

Dukes BBQ Chicken Flatbread

BBQ chicken flatbread at Duke’s.

Roast beef? Eggs Benedict? BBQ Ribs? Who am I?! Definitely not things you normally see here on Spoons, but when in Rome on vacation… Unfortunately, J got hit with food poisoning the second day of our trip, so the rest of our eats weren’t all that exciting. We did, however, end things on a high note with a slice of Duke’s famous hula pie…

Duke's Hula Pie

Macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and a chocolate cookie crust… Holy.wow. Let’s just say this pie is definitely famous for a reason.

Other than that, I did a lot of snacking. We spent most of our time hiking, walking, swimming, and kayaking, so snacks like dried fruit, bars, pretzels, and nuts were definitely lifesavers…

Hawaii Snacks

I hope you guys are doing well! And I’ll see you tomorrow for a vacation themed Thinking Out Loud πŸ˜€

All the food there looks delicious but the fruit definetely takes the cake! The fruits here in Ontario are so bland and old tasting from their long travels to my table. I am glad you enjoyed your trip and will anxiously await the recap!

Oh my goshhhhh! Food heaven right there! All your photos look delicious! I am a huge pineapple girl. It’s like candy to me! Mmmmm. I also love mango. I think I’m just meant to live in a tropical area. Maybe it’s a sign I need to move to Hawaii. πŸ˜‰

Bananas that size are actually natural in nature, but the bananas that we buy in stores are so huge because of all the extra stuff pumped onto them (along with selective breeding between the plants)…so I LOVE when I can eat the baby bananas. They’re just enough to tide me over πŸ˜‰ I ate SO MUCH fresh fruit in Hawaii (a pineapple each morning) and in Costa Rica. Anywhere I can get fresh fruit is heaven!

Fresh fruit is ONE thing I can never say no to eating! And you’re right… When you’re on vacation, every food tastes so much better especially when it’s out of your normal routine!
I definitely would have eaten my weight in pineapple and mangoes. I’m prettttty sure fresh pineapple beats bananas as my favorite fruit
I’m definitely a sweet breakfast person… Give me pancakes and syrup all day, every day. lol
Best thing I ate yesterday?? Probably a mango. I haven’t eaten one since my addiction during my junior year in college. I ate ONE the other day and have been eating them every day since. I cannot get enough (skin and all ;))

I hope you found your nut butters!!!

I think it’s kinda amazing you and Jay got to enjoy a honeymoon-esq type vacation (minus the food poisoning) πŸ™ Merp. I’ve always wanted to walk up to a farmers market on the island and just grab a fresh juicy mango and bite into it like I was born and raised on the islands. Weird? Sigh, I need to lay off watching Survivor. Even though a I am a seafood lover I would probably pass on the raw salmon too…gag. Something about raw fleshy ANYTHING is nast-tay. I hope you two soaked up each others love and got to enjoy quality time since he’s been away for awhile. You deserve it <3

I love pineapples! They are probably my all time favorite fruits I could eat a whole one in a day flat without a doubt (may have already done this haha)
Right now I have been combining sweet and savory for breakfast! I like egg white omelets and then pairing that with a side of oats and raspberries! It’s the best of both worlds πŸ™‚
The best thing I ate yesterday was a nice spoonful of peanut butter! Nut butter is just the best!

Look at all that fruit! I’m definitely jealous because homegrown apples, strawberries and kabocha from my mum’s garden and carrots, parsnips and the likes from the Farmers’ Market are as far as my experiences go. No exotic produce that hasn’t seen the inside of a plane before appearing on my table yet. I’m clearly missing out and need to book a flight to Hawaii πŸ˜‰ . It’s hard to pick a favourite but right now I’d say mangoes are mine when it comes to exotic fruit.
The Hula Pie looks out of this world good and you better believe I looked up a recipe. Now that would be well worth overcoming my cake/pie fears for next year’s birthday …

    What’s your favourite tropical fruit?
    probably pineapple or mango
    Sweet or savoury breakfasts?
I used to only eat sweet breakfasts, but now I’m on to savoury. When I’m out, I often order 2 poached eggs with bacon and toast, or huevos rancheros. At home, I like mushroom egg white omelets or sauteed mushrooms topped with a fried egg or two.
What was the best thing you ate yesterday?
I treated myself to a lemon poppyseed muffin as a morning snack yesterday and it was scrumptious πŸ™‚

I think, I pass certain phases in my breakfast. Sometimes I will give everything to eat oat with honey and raisin. And I will sometimes prefer eggs with Chile sauce πŸ˜€ Probably, even vegetable salad. Usually I adhere to one type of a breakfast while it won’t bother me. And when I cease to feel this shiver in a breakfast anticipation, I change its type… Or components πŸ˜‰
