. thinking out loud #70 .

March 20, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 100 Comments

Aaaaand cue the randomness!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. It’s official! Happy first day of spring! πŸ˜€ In a cruel twist of fate, however, the last week of winter was actually nicer than the first week of spring is looking. We got as high as 11ΒΊC (52Β°F) last week, and now?

Spring Weather

Womp, womp.

2. Thankfully, seeing things like this makes up for it…

Spring Strawberries

It may not be green grass or budding trees, but you’ll never hear me complaining about finding organic strawberries on sale. I may or may not have come home with 3 pounds 😯

3. I also may or may not have come home with a little more than I intended when I stopped by the mall…

New Movies

I needed to go in to get something in my laptop tweaked, and I somehow managed to accumulate a variety of goods somewhere between the entrance to the mall and the entrance to the Apple store. Funny how that works… But hey! At least it wasn’t a big bag of beauty products from Sephora. That being said, I do have to go back in to buy Frozen sometime soon…

4. … or maybe not considering I haven’t even had a chance to sit down and watch any of the movies I just bought. I blame this…

Blood Song

(expect to see a review in this month’s favourites post)

5. This makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside…

Bibliophile

Anyone else?

6. Riddle me this… are you supposed to refrigerate your nut/seed butters? I’ve just been keeping mine in the pantry, but I noticed that the newest jar I bought suggests to “refrigerate after opening.” Why? Can nut butters go bad? Or is it more of a texture thing? Mine never really last more than a few weeks once I open them, but I’d still rather not risk eating rancid nut oils 😯

Nut Butter Collection

Edited to add: apparently refrigeration is used to prevent the oils from oxidizing and going rancid. That being said, it takes a handful of weeks to occur, so unless it takes you a month or more to get through your jars, you’re probably okay storing them in the pantry. You’ll know if they’re starting to go bad if they taste sour or chemically.

7. Something that is in my fridge is big carrots… or… normal carrots, I guess. Why am I mentioning this? Because I never buy big carrots — baby carrots are my jam. I’m not sure what possessed me, other than the fact that I wanted to try something different. I’ll be going back to my babies soon, though, because I find them to be so much sweeter. And yes, I randomly think about carrots… and take pictures of them 😯

Big Carrots

8. Ooo! But let’s go back to nut butters for a second. I recently tried (and fell in love with) a new one…

Wowbutter

Toasted soy nut butter. Have you ever tried it? I bought a jar on a whim because it was the only nut butter available that was free of peanuts and I needed to satisfy a craving, stat. I didn’t expect to think much of it, so imagine my surprise when I ended up really loving it. Apparently it’s supposed to taste “just like peanut butter,” and while I can’t speak to that, I can say that it’s definitely tasty… and so, SO creamy.

9. And while we’re talking about food, let’s talk about hunger. Am I the only one who can be perfectly content and satisfied (read: not hungry), randomly grab something “just for a little taste,” and then all of a sudden be ravenous? It’s like suddenly the flood gates open and I want to eat ALL the foods.

10. I hope you guys are having an awesome Thursday, and thank ya for sharing your random thoughts with me — they always make me smile πŸ˜€

My nut butter obsession has returned. Lord help me. I just recently started keeping mine in the fridge as I wasn’t using them very often, but now that I am back in a full on love affair with sunbutter (okay seed butter obsession also), goodness knows they won’t last that long. I actually found I like them much better cold though. And if I need it melty I can just heat it up.

    1. How has it taken me this long to hear about Thinking Out Loud? Where have I been? This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!!!! I’m going to go and make my first linkup right now. πŸ˜€

    2. I bought some annoyingly expensive strawberries this week only to find them for 1/3 of the price the very next day. Ughhhhh.

I buy self ground PB, which I never refrigerate. I usually buy store bought almond butter though, and I DO refrigerate that only because it prevents the separation..personal preference!! I had no idea it went rancid though, that must be for people that don’t know how to really consume nut butter…it should never last more than a week! HAHA. I love that you bought the jungle book…yes.

I got so excited when I saw your strawberry photo. I’m going to stop by Safeway tomorrow and see if they have any! I wonder if they’re $500 here. Did I tell you small jars of almond butter are $15? Like, the gross MaraNatha stuff… ick.

Soy nut butter, hey? I’ve always assumed it would be gross, but maybe I’ll give this a try!

I think the nut butter thing only applies to certain ones…ones like Jif have added stuff to make it stay good longer. Ones that you have to stir I usually stick in the fridge just in case. πŸ™‚

I may be the only one in the Northern Hemisphere who hasn’t seen Frozen!! I should probably just go and buy it, yes?

Happy first day of spring! <3

I LOVE all the nut butter talk on here today! YUM! I think between your stock and my stock of nut butters, we could open a nut butter cafe! πŸ˜‰ Also – have you tried dipping your carrots IN the toasted sun butter? I haven’t tried that nut butter, but I do love a good carrot + sun butter snack!

I completely understand the soy butter buy! When a girl has a craving, you don’t bother with logistics like price tags! I bet it was amazing. I have never refrigerated my nut butters, but I also break a whole lotta other kitchen rules, so don’t take my word for it. And all those strawberries are making me excited! I’m SO ready for spring and summer fruits!

Yeahhhh I’m so excited you finally bought soy nut butter to try! Now you see why I love it so much. πŸ˜‰ I feel like I should store my nut/seed butters in the fridge to prevent them going rancid, but I hate how it makes them so hard to spread and drizzle. My jars of nut/seed butter don’t last long anyway, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Call me weird but I actually much prefer whole carrots because I find them sweeter – especially the smaller, younger carrots with the tops still attached.

I can’t wait for organic strawberries to go on sale here!!! They’re my absolute favorite fruit (maybe even my absolute favorite food).
Also, I never put nut butter in the fridge – I don’t like the texture they have when they’re cold, but they don’t last too long once the jar is open so I’m not too worried about them going bad πŸ˜‰

Yessss nut butters do go bad but it takes a goooood while, Amanda! I always put my natural butters in the fridge because I don’t fancy stirring the separation every single time I eat the butter, hehe. And Frozen is such a cute movie with a pretty good moral! At first it took me several times to get into it but when I actually sat down to watch and pay attention, I fell in love with the music and humor. πŸ˜€

I like hearing about what people are reading and enjoying. I plan on doing that a little more in my blog (following your example *Ü*)

I actually prefer big carrots when I’m cooking with them (for soup or something). They cost a little less, and just a quick peel and chop is actually easier than trying to chop up the little ones. But for just basic snacking? I like the little ones.

I feel the same about big carrots!! I bought some once and they went bad cause I just couldn’t seem to try something with them. They are actually scary haha.
And that almond/coconut/sun butter collection!!! Amazing! Here in Brasil we don’t have a lot of the stuff, only a few brands of PB. So I normally order mine from iHerb or I make my own almond butter. Good thing I’m going to US in april so I’ll just bring home a full suitcase of nut butters and quest bars! Can’t wait!

I’ve never tried soy nut butter, but I’ve never met a nut butter I didn’t love, so I’m sure I would I could easily polish off a jar. Happy Spring, Amanda… hope it starts to feel that way in your neck of the woods soon!

I refrigerate the nut butters when I am having an “off” week. (I go through phases and sometimes my nut butter consumption slacks. Usually never.)

I think nut butters are like regular butter– some people store them in the refrigerator and some don’t. Like you said, it takes time for them to go rancid so it’s more a matter of preference than anything. I refrigerate mine simply because I like [almost] everything cold…other than water. I’ll take that room temperature. (:

It’s funny that you mention soy nut butter because my dad was just telling me last week that he bought a jar and fell in love with it. I need to try some for myself!

Happy Thursday, gorgeous! Sending lots and lots of springtime-weather thoughts your way!

I am the SAME way with getting hungry at the slightest taste of something. It’s kind of annoying when you only have a little bit left, too! You just think to “finish off the bag” and then you just want MORE so you end up going to buy more. Fail.

And I’ve been SO into books lately. I blame walking on the treadmill because I find myself able to focus more on reading which is kind of weird because you’d think the opposite, I guess. Oh well. I’m hooked. Haha! I can’t wait for Divergent to come out in theatres!!

I’ve walked passed Wow Butter so many times because I was worried it wouldn’t taste like my beloved pb…buuut…if you say so, I’ll give it a go once I hit bottom on my current jar!

Rahh, I watched Catching Fire this weekend and it didn’t thrill me as much as it did in theaters, I can’t explain it, but it just wasn’t the same. I was more interested in everything EXCEPT the movie. Booh πŸ™ However, I am all on board for The Jungle Book! That’s one Disney movie I have yet to own, and I think you triggered a shopping itch for this weekend . Best Buy anyone? πŸ˜‰ Is it weird that a big wish of mine is to own every Disney classic? I wonder if that’s bucket list worthy…? I digress.

Lastly, try peeling the first layer of skin off your large carrots with a veggie peeler. I found that this makes the sweetness come out a bit more like our beloved baby carrots. It nips that bitter flesh in the butt!

Well I’ve never actually tasted PB myself soooo… I can’t say it tastes exactly like it… but it is good πŸ™‚ And I kind of always run into the problem of not liking a movie as much at home as I did in the theatre… I haven’t watched Catching Fire yet, though, so time will tell.

And are we the same person?! I’ve been working on my Disney collection for a couple of years now, and one of my goals is definitely to own all of them πŸ˜€

I am not a big snacker, so I can grab ‘a’ pretzel or ‘a’ taste of something without it becoming a ‘Cookie Monster Moment’. (nom nom nom)

Also, I know I am supposed to be part of the curmudgeony ‘I like my physical stuff’ generation clinging to albums and film and books … but I’m not. I have been digital for ages, first computer in ’79, had MP3s playing in my car in ’98, I was reading ‘ebooks’ more than 15 years before there was a Kindle, and on and on. I love books, but am just fine never touching paper again.

And YES, I do admit it is a different experience! πŸ™‚
