. thinking out loud #79 .

May 22, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 124 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Remember how I mentioned that my appetite was kind of MIA in yesterday’s post? I’m happy to report that all is right in the world again! The past two days have been “wake up ready to chew my arm off dive right in to breakfast” mornings, so all is as it should be once more. See? Everything has a way of balancing out.

Ode To Oats

2. Well…. one thing that’s been feeling a little bit off is my thirst. I have no idea what it is, but I just can’t seem to get enough water in me lately. Is it the fact that it’s been so dry around these parts? Or that I’ve been eating a little more fibre than usual? Some kind of electrolyte imbalance? Salt issues? So many questions…

Mason Jar Cup

3. I overheard the best exchange between an elderly gentleman and a barista while I was waiting in line in Starbucks the other day. I guess he’s a regular and I guess he must always be in a good mood because the barista said to him “You’re always so happy and smiling!” His reply? “Well, why not?” Besssssssst. Why not indeed….

4. On that note, this is probably a bad time to admit it, but the song Happy by Pharrell no longer makes me happy. In fact, it annoys me so much that it makes me want to kick kittens (please note: I would never actually kick a kitten). Instead, I’ve been listening to things like this…

[youtube=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve8sNTqrzCw&w=560&h=315″]

Apparently I’m channeling my inner hillbilly. Although, having grown up in Alberta with a good handful of friends who lived out in the country, I will say that it’s a lifestyle I’m quite familiar with. Good times.

5. But going back to kittens, allow me to introduce you to the resident cat at the Starbucks I frequent…

Bux Cat

I have no idea what his name is or who he belongs to… or if he’s even a he at all. All I know is that he’s always prowling the patio and cozying up to any patron who’ll take an interest in him. And when I say cozying up, I mean cozying up. This cat has no qualms whatsoever with jumping into your lap or lounging around on any unoccupied chair that might be at your table. Forget personal space — he wants to be your friend! It makes me want a cat. Too bad I’m allergic 😥

6. But at least I have a dog! Well, sort of. I had to leave her at home when I moved out and I really miss the little bugger! But at least I get to see her at my parents’ when I go over there on the weekends. Kaiah says hi 😀

Kaiah Face

She also says stop freaking taking pictures of me PLEASE…

Kaiah Unimpressed

7. So you know those oatmeal date balls I made the other day? I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that they totally cleaned me out of a few kitchen supplies. I mean, just check out the collection of empties I was left with…

Empties

Not bad, eh? 😆 I don’t think I’ve ever made anything that finished off so many of my ingredients. Confession: I get a secret thrill from using things up and being able to throw the packaging away. So oddly satisfying.

8. Also… it would appear that I really like Popchips…

Empty Popchip Bags

I blame the avocados…

Popchips and Avocado
Popchips and Avo

9. I need some Rice Krispy Squares in my life. Bad.

10. And don’t worry… I didn’t forget about the random facts!

RF Honey

RF Cuddle Specialists

RF Chewing Gum

RF Newborns

RF Ants

1. It’s also my favourite sweetener, so I’m going to try hard not to think about the fact that it’s essentially bee spit.
2. That’s either extremely brilliant or extremely sad…
3. Which is supposed to make up for the fact that it can bloat you and ruin your teeth?
4. So dads… don’t be so quick to accuse your wives of funny business if your kids don’t look like you.
5. That’s even more disturbing than the bee spit fact 😯 I hate ants.

I bet that Starbucks kitty cat is so happy he has lots of people to love on! I bet he gets scraps of muffins from time to time too, and if he’s anything like my cat, he would LOVE that!

I’m a little (no, a lot) creeped out by the cuddling company. There are truly lonely people in this world that I’m sure benefit from it, but I don’t know if I’d go that far as to hire a stranger to come cuddle me. I just keep imagining some Richard-Simmons type trying to give me giant hugs; that’d make me want to run.

Oh yes, my thirst is out on control too! I can’t get enough water, which is totally unusual for me. I always have to have some with me now.

Kaiah is gorgeous! It’s hard to leave pets when you move out of the nest. I had to do the same with my cats and I missed them terribly. At least we could visit them whenever we wanted; although, it’s not quite the same as having them live with you.

What does the name Kaiah mean? It’s beautiful.
I love Thursdays on Spoons although today’s random facts are a little disconcerting. I guess kids have reason to suspect having been born into the wrong family.
I feel the same way about finishing something off; very satisfying. Except: I’m always sad to come to the end of a jar of almond butter. So expensive yet so, so addictive.

Hehe I think I’m going to have to pick happier facts next week. And I’m actually not too sure what her name means with this spelling. Kaiya means “forgiveness” in Japanese; Kaia means “pure” in Scandanavian… but no Kaiah 😯

Great post, Amanda! Your dog is adorable and that face of wanting you to stop taking pictures of them–so relatable with my doggie too. I think the last random fact was most disturbing 😮 especially because I hate ants and anything that is little and crawls quickly (excluding babies haha). I’ve never had pop chips, but have seen them around the store. My avocados could use a new friend so I may just be trying a new food tomorrow when I grow grocery shopping. I’ll let you know what I think! 🙂 Happy Thursday!

Awww your pup is THE CUTEST. Isn’t it funny how animals hate having their photos taken? Like, how do their brains even comprehend what’s happening.

I could go for some pop chips right now. The Katy’s Kettle corn ones. I don’t mind that it’s only 6am. 😉

When my mom was born, they actually showed the wrong baby to her father. He took one look and said, “Well, THAT can’t be mine (or something of the same vein). Name it after her mother.” Thus my mom’s name. Then again, they thought she was going to be a boy until she was born (so the nursery was decked out in blue) and she was a total oops child, 6 years after her closest sibling. And her dad was playing golf and wanted to finish his round. OHHHHH the 50s…

That fact about the ants… can that be true?!!?!? That is so crazy! I mean they basically weigh nothing! Even if you had a big handful of them (which I NEVER want to do) I bet they would still weigh nothing. Crazy!

I’m glad your appetite is back! I hope you stop feeling so dehydrated soon! That can’t be fun :/ – Fun fact..I actually made myself stop listening to the song Happy because I didn’t want it to be ruined for me… If it comes on the radio, I instantly change it. But I definietly will be checking out what you are listening to now! I LOVE finding new music:) – Happy Thursday Amanda! I hope you have a great great great day<3

DAMMIT I WANT POPCHIPS. It doesn’t help that I’m basically out of all snack-y type foods right now except bananas and PB….I hate the last day or two before I go grocery shopping.
And I want to give Kaiah a hug. Does she get along well with other dogs? I can always bring Atticus over for a playdate 😉

That Happy song has been making me annoyed for quite a few weeks. It was wayyy too overplayed and I have to turn it off when it comes on every.single.time, haha. The water thing- I would say you were probably just dehydrated and making up for it, or you are eating more salty things that make you thirsty! Just keep on drinking on!

I’m SO glad I’m not the only one over Happy. I adore Pharrell but that song has got to stop ASAP! And you’re so right- there’s something so oddly satisfying about finishing up ingredients at home…even more so before travelling! Even though that means my meals have been pretty random lately, it’s nice to not throw out perfectly good food/ingredients! Kaiah is actually gorgeous- I remember you posting about her back in the day. Something random on my mind: I actually kinda enjoy travelling- how can I hate on something that forces me to eat, sleep & watch movies!

That ant thing is a little scary, especially because they seem to be everywhere right now….even IN my house!!! I know, I’m not pleased about it, and I will be giving the floors a lovely white vinegar bath this weekend. It’s supposed to throw off their scent trails. I hope it works because I don’t much like any bugs…now cats on the other hand. I wish you could have one too. They can be so funny, even when they bring you presents like live chipmunks. A little freaky, but still funny.

It’s ironic I get a big satisfaction out of using up the last of something, although I hate never having enough in the house and as soon as I start to run low, I’m already replenishing. It’s a Great Depression era mentality, which of course I never came close to living through or else I’ve aged beautifully. 😉 Maybe it comes from growing up with two brothers who always ate all the good food before me. I’m sure that’s it.

Isn’t the calmth and happiness of [some not all] elder people beautiful ? I feel we’re the ‘Generation Worry’ nowadays because we – absolutely including myself here- constantly find new issues to worry about: the size of our pants, not fitting in, not having the latest phone or whichever else nitty ‘problems’ . Maybe it’s because older generations have dealt with such a lot of hardship today’s world seems so easy and careless in comarison?
Throwing away packaging is ridiculously satisfying. Done, conquered! Sometimes I decide what to cook or bake depending on what’s on the verge of being empty so I can throw another box or bag away. Don’t ask why I had to buy a 2 lb box of wheatberries because it takes forever to empty unless you want to eat nothing but them for weeks.
By the way: I’d totally say salt [or for the nerdy bit: electrolyte imbalance ;)] is the reason for your thirstiness. Because I’ve been drinking water like it’s my job, too. Summer heat and loss of salt through sweat – I’ll agree with Khushboo in that it sounds gross, haha – does that.
    And: hi, Kaiah! She’s adorable.

    1. Some days I am so thirsty I feel like I drink too much water. It is possible.
    2. I am so sad the song Happy is overplayed! I used to LOVE it! Now it’s like change the station..

I also get extreme satisfaction from finishing off pantry staples. I have no clue why, I guess it makes me feel justified that I bought them 🙂
The baby thing – yeaaah. Human error is pretty ridiculous. Most hospitals (here, at least) have adopted an armband system (mom, baby, dad/other parent – matching armbands) that beeps if you try to take the baby to the wrong person…or out of the OB unit.
