. thinking out loud #71 .

March 27, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 149 Comments

Aaaaand cue the randomness!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. So I went to Starbucks the other day to grab a dry cappuccino. You guys remember how obsessed I used to be with those things…  I went through a phase that lasted a good year where I was basically in there every.single.day. My wallet kind of hated me for it, but it was something I really looked forward to so I justified the cost. Anyways… I hadn’t had one in forever, so I figured I would treat myself a few days ago.

Starbucks Cappuccino

You guys… it pains me to say this, but… it wasn’t as good as I remembered 😥 In fact, I was sitting there wishing I had just gotten a regular Pike instead. Maybe it was just poorly made since the barista was kind of new, but yeah… I think I’ll be sticking to coffee from my Keurig from now on.

2. Speaking of the Keurig, I finally got around to taking advantage of my ‘get-2-free-boxes-when-you-register’ deal and put in my order online…

Keurig Order

I know I said I was kind of over flavoured coffees, but these are flavours that I can’t find anywhere around here so I figured… what the hey… I’m especially excited about the chocolate glazed donut one since I’ve been hearing so many good things; and chocolate glazed donuts are easily my favourite kind. Hmm… I’m thinking I might need to whip up another batch of these…

Chocolate Glazed Donuts

3. One last thing about coffee… Does anyone else shed a tear or two when they finish the last sip? I try to limit myself to one cup a day (otherwise my stomach goes into I-hate-you mode), but you’d better believe that I savour that cup as if it were liquid gold.

Homemade Cinnamon Latte

4. Speaking of drinks, do you guys have a cut-off point when it comes to how late you’ll keep drinking water? There’s a whole lot of nonsense out there about not eating later than [insert hour here], but what about drinking? I ask because sometimes I’ll wake up ridiculously early because I have to go to the bathroom and I won’t be able to fall back asleep after that… I’m wondering if not drinking late will help me avoid that…

Drink Water

5. These are the kind of random things that run through my head. And if you need further proof of my strangeness, look what I found when I opened one of my jars of almond butter the other day…

Date and Almond Butter

Half a date 😯 A whole date I could understand, but half?? I’m going to assume that I ate the other half, but why did I leave it in there? Why didn’t I eat it, or at the very least, not store it in an AB jar? Some things even I can’t explain… Like why I never manage to stir my nut butter jars well enough to avoid being left with the crusty bits at the bottom. It’s a sad, sad day when you come to the end of a jar…

6. But it’s a happy day when you find a new jar in your pantry that you didn’t even know you had…

Justin's Almond Butter

I honestly thought the crusty remains were all I had left of my beloved Justin’s almond butter (which needs to get its butt to Canada… hint, HINT), so you can probably imagine the ridiculous happy dances I was doing when I unexpectedly came across a brand new jar buried in the back of my pantry. I have a lot of nut butters… sometimes a few jars can get lost in the crowd.

7. I’m really looking forward to the weekend. Why? Because Saturday morning I’ll [hopefully be riding shotgun] in a car headed here:

Canadian Rockies

I feel like it’s been forever since I got to go snowboarding in the mountains, and this might be my last chance before the season ends. Can.not.wait. I’m thinking I might need to do another As We Speak mountain edition — I’ve been slacking on the selfies lately!

8. I’m also thinking that I need to whip up a batch of these soft and chewy granola bars for the trip…

Soft and Chewy Protein Granola Bars

I’m almost afraid to open up those flood gates again, though, because I literally cannot control myself around those things. One batch leads to two; two to four; and before I know it, all I’m eating is granola bars 😆

9. One thing putting a damper on my good mood is the fact that I still need to survive one ordeal before I can enjoy myself this weekend — I need to go get my blood taken. Womp, womp. It’s just part of a routine yearly health exam, but ugh… I can think of about a million other things I’d rather be doing, especially since I have the biggest fear of needles. No joke. I can’t even watch people getting poked on TV without feeling all sorts of nervous and jerky, and every.single.time I get my blood drawn, I end up one breath away from passing out — I’m talking ears roaring and black spots taking over my vision. I know it’s no big deal and you can barely feel it, but I feel it in my head! Anyone else? And anyone have tips on how to survive make it easier?

10. This post has been far too wordy for random thoughts — sorry! Hope you’re having a happy Thursday 😀

Chocolate glazed donut and coconut mocha sound delicious!! I can’t wait to hear what you think! I can’t even fathom snowboarding right now. It’s around 70 to 80 degrees where I am!!

That half eaten date in the almond butter jar is hilarious! Hope you’re enjoying the donut coffee and I love the coconut mocha flavor too. Good luck on getting your blood taken…. just close your eyes and envision being up in the mountains on your snowboard. 😉

Hmm … I definitely pee at LEAST 2 times per night, and I’ve never really thought about limiting water later in the day. I don’t think it’s worth it to me since I can literally fall back asleep in 10 seconds, but it might be something to consider for you!

It’s kinda bizarre you are talking about k-cups because I have recently ran into some major life decisions (about coffee) -real life problems, right? :)Anyways, I am re-budgeting my finances so I can switch up my living situation. That means cutting pennies where I can. First things to go are my gym membership, 1 jar of pb a month, more frozen veggies, etc. The little things. BUT my biggest issue is coffee. Coffee makes my world go around. Coffee makes me go, “mmm,MMM…damn, that’s toasty, purrr” Minus the purr, it’s more like an awkward satisfactory humming noise. Anddddd queue the crickets 😯 Merp.

My point- I also have a magic coffee baby making Keurig. It kills me to dish out $24 a month for 2 boxes of my beloved flavored k-cups. I had an “ah-hah!” moment yesterday. Have you ever tried the re-usable k-cups? I am going to pick one up tomorrow (and a mug warmer 😉 ) and start buying flavored coffee in bags instead of pre-packaged k-cups. Same thing, just a little more effort and $16 vs. $24. Maybe I can mix and match flavors too…! I think I am trying to rationalize my decision by telling you all of this, so feel free to chime in your opinion.

Thanks for allowing me to vent my crazy persuasive essay on your post! Good thing today is all for thinking out loud <3

Yup! I have a re-usable K-cup and it works really well! The only reason I’ve kind of stopped using it lately is because I’ve been lazy, but other than that, it makes great coffee. And yes, yes, YES on mixing flavours! You’re going to love it 🙂

Coconut Mocha is my #1 favorite flavored KCUP!!! It’s so delish! Good choice! As far as getting blood drawn, I’ve been poked so many times it’s become an every day thing to me 😛 I don’t know if it will help you, but I always watch EVERYTHING they’re doing so I know when I’ll feel the prick and everything. I know what I’ll be feeling and just prepare myself mentally. Good luck!!!

PS. You should definitely try OIAJ again so the hard clumps at the bottom get all warmed and slide out with your oats. It’s seriously my favorite.

I think we have a similar mind set when it comes to coffee…
    1. I ALWAYS savor the last sip because I also limit myself to 1 single cup (stomach gets weird) Its like I wish the cup just lasted forever it just tastes so good !
    2. I really am sad when the baristas at Starbucks are new… i ordered my favorite peppermint mocha latte the other day bc I know its going away and it was NOT as good. So disappointing. They were just so busy and the guy didn’t know what he was doing. Fail 🙁
    3. ummmm i REALLY want to try that coconut mocha !! omg dying.. where can I get those !?!?!?
On the water thing.. i used to have this problem and would have to pee in the middle of the night its the WORST… so I stopped drinking water as soon as I got home (6-7pm) and then have 1 glass with dinner.. and im good to good (usually have tea of some sort before bed too) try it out ! as long as you are hydrated during the day you are fine 🙂
Have fun snowboarding, I already told you those granola bars were on my list of items to bake ! !Maybe I will this weekend too lol

Confession: sometimes if I get a bad drink, I’ll actually ask them to remake it. I figure that if I’m paying out the wazoo for coffee, I might as well get what I want. And I bought the K-cups on Keurig.com — they have TONNES of amazing sounding flavours, and I have a feeling that I’ll be talking about the ones I got in future ToLs.

Ah, I know the fear of needles! I have actually passed out before and it’s not fun! If you lay down while it happens it helps with the passing out feeling and then getting yourself a treat afterward 🙂 not only will it make you feel better but it’ll help with the wonky feeling.

    needles, try this:
deep breaths and about they time they are going to stick you, pinch yourself somewhere! I know if sounds crazy, but it works (at least for me). You focus on the pinching and forget about the needle stick!

What is a “dry” cappuccino? I’m intrigued! I’m with you on getting a little sad when I’m about to finish up my mug of coffee. It’s one of the best parts of my morning!

It’s just a regular cappuccino with less milk and more foam. So instead of 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk, and 1/3 foam, it’s closer to 1/3 espresso and 2/3 foam — it just makes the coffee flavour a lot stronger.

I don’t have my Keruig anymore, I just have a fancy coffee maker, but I’m kind of considering bringing back the Keurig for flavoured coffees because YUM! I also added coconut oil to my coffee this weekend (I blended it together in my blender) and it was ridiculous. Soooo good! But definitely just a treat 🙂

That scared me – I thought you JUST opened the jar & a half of a date was in there. I would freak out.
Yep – I only drink water & try to limit it after 8 (go to bed about 10-11) or I’m up at least once to pee. I’m also 42 – that could have something to do with it 🙂

A dry cappuccino is just a regular cappuccino with less milk and more foam. The regular ratio is something like 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foam, so a dry would be closer to 1/3 espresso and 2/3 foam — it just makes the coffee flavour stronger.

Oh I totally hate when your coffee isn’t as good as imagined. I used to love lattes but they’re way to pricey. Lately, when I treat myself to an expensive coffee I’m always thinking “waan waan”, not good. I’ve since made the switch to tea and it seems to be better plus there are so many specialty shops with unlimited selections. But yes that last sip is the worst and the first sip is the best cause it’s still piping hot 🙂 Have fun on the mountain, it looks beautiful!

I HATE getting my blood drawn. It’s not even because of the needles–it’s just unpleasant. (This coming from someone who wants to work in the healthcare field when I graduate…)

Most things I’ve read recommend you stop drinking water an hour or two before you go to bed, but I always drink water straight up until I go to bed because if not, I’ll wake up because my throat is scratchy and uncomfortable and needs water. It’s so much worse during the spring, too, because of my allergies to pollen…

I literally was just thinking about how I wish my coffee cup would magically refill itself. Because A) I don’t want to leave my bed. and B) I limit myself to one cup a day – so if it refills before it’s full, that’s still one cup right??

I loathe getting my blood Athens. The best thing that helped me was the nurse asking me questions and making talk while it happened. I slightly distracted myself and I was too proud to stop talking. Just tell the nurse you’re scared and ask her to keep you talking 🙂

as for the needle thing, I don't really have any advice. Ive been getting prodded since I was young due to all my injuries and what not, so I just learned to deal. I have yet to try Justin’s almond butter. I’ve been putting it off and putting it off because it’s on the expensive side, but I should really just bite the bullet and get a jar. Problem is…I know I’ll love it and never want to turn back to the cheaper stuff again. What to do!?!

And ughhhh needles. Can you bring someone with you? I refuse to be by myself when I have to get blood drawn – so I have someone to talk to and distract me.

I wake up multiple times every night to pee so clearly I don’t do well limiting water intake but I figure water is good for you so it’s not a big deal.
