April 14, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 55 Comments

Why hello there!

I know it’s Sunday and I said that I wouldn’t see you guys until Monday, but it’s currently 5:30 in the AM and everyone else is asleep so I thought I’d check in with you guys and see how you’re doing. And no, I’m not just using you to kill some time – I really do love ya! AndΒ I know, I know… I should probably be trying to get more sleep, but some days are easier than others when it comes to drifting back into Dreamland, and today is one of those days where it’s just not going to happen.

Eh. You win some, you lose some.

So my weekend getaway has been really great so far, despite the fact that the weather has been somewhat temperamental. I mean, snow storms in April?Β Seriously?! I don’t mind it so much on the mountain…

Snowboarding Prep

… but the highways are definitely a different story…

Whiteout Driving

Holy.wow were the roads ever treacherous in some spots. We managed to make it safe and sound, thankfully, but it was a slow and painful process.

Other than that, it’s been a pretty uneventful trip so far – snow, boarding, mountain goats, flying through the trees – andΒ rather than ramble your guys’ ears off, I think I’ll just assault your eyeballs with a few pictures instead πŸ˜€

Snowboarding Breakfast

The best way to start the day – with breakfast and coffee.

Trip Prep

Packing and prepping – boarding pack, suitcase, and lunch box (which turned out to be freakin’ awesome).

Snacking on the Road

Snacking on the road… and some mountain goats that took it seriously.

Sheep on the Road
Goats on the Road

Moody Mountains

Unlike our last trip, the mountains were moody this time around.

Long Way Down

Long way up; long way down.

Snoozing on the Chair

Oh you know… just catching up on some sleep.

We’ve got one more day on the slopes (which I should probably start getting ready for)Β before starting the 3.5 hour drive back home early this evening. Hope you guys are having a fantastic weekend! See ya tomorrow!

. – . – . – .

What’s your favorite road trip snack food? Fruit, chips, cereal, trail mix, and gummy bears.
Serious debate question: pancakes or waffles???Β

Your caption on that last pic…hahaha! I still can’t get over the fact that my tiny little Amanda is a snowboarding bada$$! πŸ˜‰ Love it! I swear I am waaaaaaaaay too accident prone to affix both my feet to a board I have pretty much no control over…gravity ALWAYS wins in my case! Lol

Favorite road trip snack food: popcorn and sour gummy worms!

Pancakes or waffles?! Are you kidding me?? What kind of question is that?! πŸ˜‰

I can’t believe you guys are still getting snow storms out there! I hope it warms up for you soon. Although the weather hasn’t been much better out here… spring is definitely taking its time to get here. πŸ˜›

My favourite road trip food is definitely trail mix – made with banana chips, pretzels, honey roasted soy beans, yogurt covered raisins, smarties, dried apricots, and sesame sticks. Also I’ll usually pack some apples too.

I’m gonna have to go with making pancakes because I for some reason I find making waffles to be a lot harder. I always put too much batter in the waffle maker or too little or the insides don’t cook properly… something always goes wrong! πŸ˜›

Looks like you’re having lots of fun despite the crazy winter weather! My favorite car trip snack is something salty and crunchy so those pop chips are right up my alley. Gummy bears are also very delicious πŸ™‚
Ahhh don’t make me choose!! – I don’t think I can every choose between waffles or pancakes. Depends on my mood I guess πŸ˜‰

Okay, those mountain goats…..they actually made me laugh out loud. I’ve never seen one before!! Man, they are definitely some serious snackers. I’m glad you got out on the slopes despite the crazy weather – any boarding is better than no boarding right?? Also glad the lunchbox was a success :-D.

And okay. Pancakes v. Waffles….not gonna lie, I’m a pancake girl all the way. My dad used to make them for me and my sister every Saturday, often in the shape of the letters of our names! In college, my roommate and I made them in shapes too…not exactly blog-appropriate shapes LOL. So I guess pancakes have the most sentimental value, but I also like the texture (?) better….I like them best slightly undercooked and gooey in the middle, and blueberry is my fave.

Pancakes are pretty sentimental to me too, but only the ones my mom makes. When I try to make them myself, I usually end up with a pancake scramble, which is why I tend to stick to waffles.

Great to hear you’re enjoying a fun time in the snow! … and here I was thinking I’d seen enough snow for this year but your stunning mountain pictures make it look kind of alluring again. Bringing back memories of ski holidays, snow fun with the family. But only kind of ;). I’m glad we had the first really lovely Spring weekend around here enabling me to trade my winter coat for a lighter one.
Don’t get angry but … I don’t like pancakes. Please just tell me I used the wrong recipes so far and give me a fantastical one. So far the topping were the best part for me. Waffles? Sheesh, I don’t even remember the last time I had some!

I’m afraid I can’t be much help in the pancake department because I’m not really that great at making them myself – too much flipping patience required. I do believe Heather from KMB holds the title of pancake queen.

I’m glad you are having such a relaxing weekend and I hope that you are able to catch up on that sleep. As someone who really just hates the cold, those snow pictures are making me cringe. Though it was snowing in upstate today. As for me, I’m a waffle girl as of late…maybe I’ll get back into pancakes again at a later point but waffles have been my jive lately. πŸ™‚

Snowing in April?? Nature must have missed the seasonal memo this year round. Although for your sake, i hope that this crazy long winter translates into an equally long summer (call me an optimist ;))! As for your serious question, I’m gonna have to go with waffles over pancakes, even though I use the same batter for both…it’s definitely a texture thing. Oh and I almost always end up with perfect waffles whereas my pancakes sometimes turn into scrambles – whoops ;)! Have a safe drive home, Amanda!

Yikes, you’re braver than I am on those chairlifts. Recently a British girl fell off one and died while on a ski trip, so I’m even more wary of them than I used to be.

Cashew nuts and popcorn make good road snacks in my opinion…and pancakes narrowly edge out waffles because they’re easier to make and always seem more substantial (waffles have too many holes in them :P)

Fell off the chairlift? Eep! The thought crossed my mind one or two times, but there’s a bar and everything! The worst is when whoever I’m riding up with bounces around… I’m always afraid the stupid thing is going to detach from the cables 😯

Apparently the bar didn’t come down properly :/ Also too many people tried to pile into one chairlift – I remember lots of us horsing around with them on the dry slopes I used to ski on in the UK…I could never get jumping onto them right and half the time the lift would go off without me because I’d panic and hurl myself out of the way (yes, it was as embarrassing as it sounds!)

I actually got a re-freezable ice pack gel like this http://www.fenigo.com/CryopakIcePacks.htm

All you do is stick it in the freezer until it’s frozen and then take it out and stick it in your lunch box. As long as your box is insulated, it’ll keep cold for pretty much the entire day. I took it on my trip and it was fantastic!

Glad that you’re having a good time! Those roads look terrifying…glad you made it up safely. I don’t know how I would feel about a road full of mountain goats – I’ve never seen one! I remember once on my way to high school on the bus we were delayed because a bunch of cows escaped from a farm and were hanging out in the middle of the road. I don’t think that’s quite as cool as mountain goats though.

Trail mix is my go to for road trip foods. I always hit up Bulk Barn before I go on a road trip…and chocolate covered pretzels tend to find their way in there too :-p

Whenever I’m making from scratch, I usually go for pancakes because apparently I’m entirely too lazy to pull out my waffle maker. Fortunately, I do have those frozen waffles I just bought…:-D

Me and Heather (from KMB) should probably battle it out sometime. Hahaha.

Fav travel snack is Ativan. HAHAHA. For air travel, anyway. I get nervous, and Ativan cuts travel time into 10 minutes. But, for road trips, Simply Bars, trail mix, baby carrots, hard boiled eggs, bananas, cherries (when they’re in season) PB&J sandwiches… those are the usual suspects for hiking trips.

!!! It makes me happy to see you blogging. I’m glad you’re having a great time on your trip and made it there despite the crappy weather! Best snacking food for me is dried fruit, snackimals, and some sort of candy for emergencies – It’s only necessary. The pancake and waffle debate is a tough one. I think each has its own occassion. I love the fact you can fill the little valleys in waffles with butter, AB, PB, greek yogurt, or all other things delicious; however, there is something about the fluffiness of pancakes which is just… perfect. This really just made me hungry for waffles now, so I kind of think they won today.
