. saturday shopping and some staples .

June 25, 2011 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 68 Comments

Someone has stolen my sunshine…

It was here when I went to bed last night (no it really was… stupid overly long summer days), and nowhere to be found this morning…

Le boo.

The only solution for such a dreary start to the day? Comfort food all the way…

Tiramisu Oats… made by adding a Tbsp. of cream cheese, a Tbsp. of carob powder, and a tsp. of instant coffee granules to my regular steel cut oaties… then topping with banana slices and almond butter.

Mmm… I was comforted… and also going a little stir crazy. So, after spending some time curled up on the couch with my new favorite book:

… followed by 3 miles on my not-so-favorite dreadmill, I popped one of these babies in my mouth, made myself semi-presentable, and headed out the door.

Where did I go?

Here:

… with “here” being the local farmer’s market.

I always get a bit jealous when I see some of the amazing farmer’s markets that other bloggers have in their city. Ours is… okay… but it’s nothing to brag about. Unless you like weeds plants…

Which I clearly do.

Or bagels…

Which I’ve honestly never cared much for.

Or beef…

Which I’ll spare you the gory details of.

And if none of that strikes your fancy, then perhaps beets, potatoes, rhubarb, or carrots will.

Actually, the carrots should – the carrots are amazing.

So, even though I had to drive all the way across the city only to come home with a 6 lb. bag of carrots, the trip was totally worth it. These carrots rock my world.

But man woman cannot survive on carrots alone (believe me, I once tried…), so my next stop was the grocery store, where I restocked on some staples that I was getting dangerously low on.

And by dangerously low I mean less than 5 servings left – I don’t like to cut it too close…

Baked lentil chips — Cinnamon Puffins — Raisins — Steel cut oats

Salsa — Canned pumpkin — canned beans (kidney & chickpeas) — Roasted almond butter

Kombucha — Cottage cheese — Greek yogurt (strawberry & plain) — Vanilla almond milk — Eggs

And, finally, the most important purchase of all…

Five and a half lbs. of bananas

I was down to only 2 bananas after this morning’s breakfast, which is basically a Code Red situation in this house. There are certain foods that I can’t refuse to live without, and bananas are one of them. Oats, chocolate, coffee, yogurt, almond butter, eggs, hummus, and salsa are a few others. Sure, it wouldn’t kill me to go without them for a day or two (three would be pushing it), but why would I do that?

To prove that I was a masochist?

Well I’m not. So, rain or shine, blizzard or torrential downpour, my butt will be making a trip to the grocery store if my staples start running low. What can I say? I like to eat what I like to eat.

. – . – .

What’s one food you ALWAYS have to have on hand?

What are three things you bought the last time you went shopping? (it doesn’t have to be food)

I always like to have some kind of: nut butter, oats, almond or soy milk, and coffee. Oh, and organic pink lady apples – specific, but so delicious! Also, I’d probably be pretty torn if we ran out of bananas.

Oh I cannot survive without oats. Nope. I actually do not know what I would do if I didn’t have any………probably run around screaming like a mad thing! Nah actually I think I *might* survive that horrific ordeal but I don’t like to think about it. Oh and green tea!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t go a day without having at least one cup of green tea!!

Funnily enough on our last shopping trip, I bought butter and yoghurt. 😛

Lentil chips sound pretty interesting!! And how delicious do those tiramisu oats look?! Such a genius idea 🙂 I live carrots, I go through huge bags of carrots in the speed of light 🙂 But I agree, you cannot live only on them 🙂 And I have to say that I didn´t steal your sunshine, because there is nothing like sunshine around me for the last couple of days :))
I cannot live without oatmeal, so oats are probably my one staple I cannot survive the day without 🙂
The last time shooping, I bought apples, tahini and cantaloupe 🙂

Yum tiramisu oats sound so tasty! I always have to have apples on hand, they would be top on my list of ‘must have in house’. Other items making the list would be yogurt, oats, puffed kamut, and salsa 🙂

Those oats look soooo good! I used to hate coffee-flavored anything (crazy I know) but now I love it so I may have to try those as an overnight oats combo.
I always need some kind of fruit, oats, almond butter, Greek yogurt and Medjool dates. But I’m sure I could come up with a few more!
Three things I recently bought: freeze dried fruit, granola and a pair of shorts from online.

On hand I need, oatmeal, salsa, carrots, apples, almond milk, peanut butter, veggie burgers!!! Wow, I need a lot of food at all times! CODE RED on the bananas? I can relate. We went on a banana run at 10pm one night so we had bananas for our oats in the morning, sickness?

2 bananas is a red flag, haha! It’s the same way for me, I cannot live without bananas. There was one time I found out I was out and went in negative degree weather. My staples are lettuce, bananas, soy milk, nut butters and peppers. I have to run to the store again tomorrow to stock up on staples and eats for the week.

I’m sort of a coffee nut… I need to mess with a tiramisu oats combo myself! This looks so good!

It sort of cracks me up how much we have in common- our staples, even!

Hmm, I ALWAYS need my oats. I love having different oat combos for breakfast every morning! So everything that goes along with that. Rolled oats, stevia, almond milk, and whatever mix-ins! Nut butter FOR SURE! Ooh, and tofu. And bread. Ok I’ll stop 😉

Three things I bought last: a spark (!), a bento box (!!!!!), and well, another spark! WOOO!

Your farmers market actually looks way nicer than mine. Mine is teeny tiny, because I live in a eiity bitty town. But they do have some pretty good vegetables, so I can’t complain.

My staples are eggs, bread, nut butter (usually salted almond), and baby carrots. Give me those things and I’m set. 🙂

The last thing I bought was a running outfit!

i love making oatmeal taste like all my favorite things. i made german chocolate oats once, which this post reminded me of. maybe tomorrow i’ll make some fancy oatmeal 🙂

my last shopping trip got me a new laptop case, a movie ticket, and a vanilla skinny cow sandwich 🙂

Haha I’m really neurotic about my food staples as well. I always HAVE to have bananas, soy nut butter, and oats. I have definitely made 11 pm trips to the grocery store before just to buy more bananas for the next morning haha!!

I can’t go without bananas either. I bought some today! And I ALWAYS have baggies of frozen bananas in my freezer. By the way, the idea of adding cream cheese to oats has been on my radar for a while now, so it’s a funny coincidence that you just did that! I don’t know if I’ve seen any other bloggers do that.

Oh, and I must get that book! I’m actually a certified personal trainer, so I feel like it’s somewhat necessary for me to see what the fuss is all about. If there are new rules for lifting…that’s something I gotta know!

I saw baked lentil chips when I went grocery shopping yesterday and I was debating whether or not to buy them. Alas I didn’t 🙁

I think the one thing I ALWAYS have on hand is oats. I can never run out of those 🙂 I actually JUST went grocery shopping and only bought a total of three things (how perfect! haha)…brown rice puffs, Mom’s Best toasted wheat puffs, and unsweetened almond milk.

It seems like it’s my turn to offer some sunshine. But I’m warning you – the tropical sun is insanely hot 🙂 .

Baked lentil chips sounds amazing. As a lentil lover I am very interested. The fact that I had to go round the whole city to find any kind of lentils makes me even more jealous.

I freak out if I don’t have yogurt, bananas and oats. Bread is also hardly ever absent.

Grocery shopping wasn’t in my plan at all last night but it was so damn hot that I made a tiny detour of my way and went to the closest air-conditioned supermarket. Needless to say, I left with a full bag of goodies. The buys I’m most proud of are decaf coffee (amen!), light mayo (I’ve been looking for something like this for months) and rose-scented Herbal Essences shampoo (I hope it’s good…). But chocolate went in the basket, too 🙂 .
