I think I have a new favourite smoothie ingredient.

Scratch that.

I definitely have a new favourite smoothie ingredient. Or at least one that I can add to my list of favourite smoothie ingredients, since I’m pretty sure I could never willingly abandon frozen bananas and raw oats. They complete me. And I purposely left them out of this recipe just so I’d know it was 100% the new guy that was responsible for the awesomeness that this smoothie ended up turning into.

Did that paragraph even make sense? Because it did in my head, but it kind of feels like a compound sentence now that I go back and look at it.

Doesn’t matter. I digress. Here’s the new guy…

Ripe Avocado

With “the new guy” being an avocado, in case I completely failed in my attempt at photographing one creatively and you have no idea what you’re looking at.

And I know what you’re thinking. And I know it doesn’t sound like it should work in your mind. But promise me that you’ll abandon any negative preconceptions and try it out at least once.

Because it might blow your mind like it did mine…

I mean… I’ve tried adding avocado to smoothies before (apparently), but I completely forgot about the amazing things they do for the texture.

It’s smooth.

It’s creamy.

It’s mousse-y.

Not to be confused with mousy, but seriously… adding avocado to a smoothie gives it this light, pillowy creaminess. That’s really the only way I can describe it. It’s almost like a mousse. Only… without chocolate, in this case.

And the best part is that you can’t taste the avocado at all. Like, I know you can use bananas to add some creaminess to smoothies, but those guys come with a pretty strong taste that some people don’t like or are straight up allergic to. They also won’t give you the same pillowy texture.

Avocados, though? Not only do they have a super mild taste, but they also come with a nice dose of healthy fats and vitamin E, which works wonders for your hair and skin. Pair that with the antioxidants in blueberries and some extra protein from the Greek yogurt, and you’ve got yourself one healthy smoothie powerhouse.

Oh, and it also passes the floating spoon test with flying colours, in case that sort of thing is important to you…

Happy eating!

I made this this morning for the first time and while I feel like it is super delicious, mine is definitely not that beautiful purple. It’s more of a green color. Is it really just half a cup of blueberries? Also in the recipe of the bottom you listed plain yogurt so that is what I bought and used. But in the reading above it looks like you use Greek yogurt? I will make it again!

Just made this with dark chocolate almond milk and a cup of crushed ice instead of yogurt. Tastes great 😃. Something to add to the rotation for working stat holidays went getting time to eat can be questionable.

If you use Vegan yogurt instead of greek yogurt and liquid Stevia instead of Maple Syrup, how do the nutritional values change?

Sorry Kelley, but I’m not sure. I only calculate the nutritional info based on the ingredients I use. If you want to make any substitutions, you can figure out the new values using a calculator like this one – https://www.myfitnesspal.com/recipe/calculator

Oh my goodness! This was delicious!! My avocado was very large, so a quarter of it was perfect. No spinach or avocado taste whatsoever (although I love both).
I wanted some additional omega 3’s, so I did add a Tbl of flax seed. Yum, yum, yum!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. Had to adapt it for dairy allergy and sugar-free, subbed out the yogurt added more “milk” and replaced syrup with banana, the family devoured it!

This is an easybwaybto get all my fruits and vegetables for the day. Do you think
other frozen fruits would work with the recipe?

I work with youth and teens with peanut allergies. Would regular milk work as a substitute and have the same or close to the same results?

I subbed 2 Truvia packets in for the maple syrup. I also used unsweetened vanilla cashew milk instead of almond milk. I liked the flavor, but I think I may have added in too much spinach. My smoothie had a rather unappetizing gray color, but the creaminess and the blend of tastes were great. Maybe I’ll add more blueberries to the smoothie in the future to see if that helps the color.

I am a VERY picky eater and was told to try smoothies to trick myself into eating healthier. While looking for smoothie recipies, I stumbled across this article. I was skeptical about the recipie but after reading your review on it, I gave it a try with a few small tweeks (a bit less spinach to ease myself into it, regular milk, and a random sweetener I found at the store). It was delicious and reminded me of blueberry yougurt! Thank you for sharing the recipe and your thoughts about it!

I’ve tried this recipe and it is a keeper! The avocado makes this smoothie almost silky tasting, very creamy.
For a bit of a sweeter taste, I doubled the amount of blueberries and it came out great. Even my husband liked it and was surprised when he found out that there was avocado in it!

I love you! Your recipes bring new flavor and goodness to my new gluten free dairy free life thank you so much for making eating delicious again. Not very adventurous I guess – was hesitant to put avocado in smoothies even though I’m allergic to naners and need a substitute. I trust your recipes because they’ve all been amazing. Much love and many thanks!

Girl, you just had to combine two of my favorite things ever – blueberries and avocado. Add “smoothie” and I was SOLD. My fave ingredient is probably chia seeds. They make the smoothie so thick and creamy, and add a punch of plant protein and fiber 🙂
