. thinking out loud #29 .

May 2, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 77 Comments

Ready. Set. Random!

1. I’ve come to the very disappointing realization that I can’t eat carrots in mass quantities; and by mass quantities I mean I can’t really eat more than one serving of baby carrots a day…

Baby Carrots

I was BLTing on some baby carrots the other day before I realized that I’d gone through something like 1/3 of the bag in one sitting. No problem, right? Carrots are healthy. Well, I didn’t really think anything of it, but my stomach certainly did. Hellooooo what I like to call “squirrely guts” for the next two days. And I know it was the carrots because the same thing has happened a few times in the past. Actually, my stomach seems to have a problem with all of the orange colored veggies in general. Pumpkin. Kabocha. Butternut… Anytime I eat more than a small amount at a time, it takes a few days for my digestive system to sort itself out again. What.the.heck.

2. That was an incredibly long random thought, so here’s a shorter one:

Car Dancing

And in case you were wondering, the song was Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. Still obsessed.

3. Lately I’ve been craving (and munching on) raw oats. Is that normal? I don’t know what it is, but I’m just loving their taste and texture. So far I haven’t noticed any ill effects, but I hate to tempt fate. Will it kill me?

Raw Oats

4. What about taking naps with gum in my mouth? Or eating expired cereal?

Expired Cereal

So many bad habits! If I randomly stop posting and disappear, it may mean I either a) choked on gum in my sleep, or b) was stricken with a rare plague that comes from eating expired grains. Hey, you never know…

5. Speaking of not knowing…  I don’t actually know the phone numbers of 95% of the people in my contact list. I get a number, put it in my phone, and that’s the end of it. If I ever found myself in a situation where I had to dial a number and didn’t have my iPhone with me, I’d be up sh*t creek without a paddle in quite an awkward predicament (and yes, that’s an official dictionary definition of ‘up sh*t creek’).

6. I do know that it’s pretty much impossible to be in a bad mood after listening to this song. I’ve had Michael Buble’s newest album on repeat since the day I bought it, and yeah… this song always puts a smile on my face.

7. So does this!

Wellness Show

The Edmonton Health and Wellness Show. It’s happening this weekend, and I’m 99.9% sure that I’ll be going. I’ve never been to a show like this, so I’m curious to see what they’re all about and hopefully learn some new things. The field of health and wellness has been whispering sweet nothings into my ear lately, and I’d like to become a little better acquainted with it.

8. I’d also like to figure out how the heck to get the 46 posts that are sitting in my drafts folder to actually appear on the blog. Apparently there’s a lot I want to talk about… I think I mentioned that I might start posting more than once a day waaaaay back in February, and while it hasn’t happened yet, it still might.

9. So I’m excited. After months and months of going back and forth on the subject, I finally decided to sign up for Foodie Penpals for May. I figure it’s a great way to connect with new people and get introduced to new products. Can.not.wait.

Foodie Penpals

10. I’m also ridiculously excited for a few other upcoming changes that will [hopefully] be taking place in my life. There’s so much I want to share with you guys about some of my future plans. So much. But is it time? Will I be judged? Do I care? Gah! So many questions. And as much as I hate cryptic statements like this, the answers are going to have to wait…

Happy Thursday, friends!

You know, I’ve noticed similar issues with butternut and kabocha squash and it bums me out because I ADORE it. Weird, too, because “in theory” they’re not supposed to be a big irritant to the system. I’m finding smaller quantities helps, but I can’t give em up completely.

Raw oats are good stuff – I find I only crave them in warm weather though, because otherwise I want them warm and creamy. I love adding the raw guys to yogurt bowls.

OMG! NEVER sleep with gum in your mouth!! Do you not know the serious consequences? It can fall out of your mouth and land in your hair! And peanut butter does not work, I unfortunately know this from experience :-/

That’s so weird, sometimes when I eat big carrots I get these odd stomach pains and I don’t know why. It only happens sometimes though. I really don’t want to give up my carrots so I’m just going to risk it!
And I lie to think of expiration dates as mere GUIDELINES. Best before April 12, 2010? It’s probably fine 😉

I could eat carrots like potato chips.. it’s weird. But every single time I eat them plain and raw, I get the hiccups!! I can’t wait to hear about your future plans!

I’m in the nutrition field, in a slightly unconventional sense… I’m studying holistic nutrition with CSNN, which is in alignment with what I believe/how I live vs. a clinical (govt!) setting. I’m almost done (finishing up my practicum) but afterwards, I plan on starting small – taking on PT clients until I get a feel for what area(s) I want to specialize in/where I want to work. I’m gravitating towards womens health- weight loss/mgmt/balancing hormones. And sports nutrition!

I hear ya on the gut/veggie issues… I get a stomachache if I have too many raw, hard veggies/fruit like carrots & apples, but when it comes to sweet potatoes & squash, I get SO bloated & uncomfortable. It’s the starch! Taking a digestive enzyme seems to help a little, though.

I don’t know if it’s the same over there, but in the UK there are 2 kinds of expiry dates: use by dates which you really shouldn’t igonre, and best before dates which mean the food won’t be really dangerous but might not be it’s best (funny how that works). Cereal normally has a best before date. That said, I’ll eat pretty much anything up until the point where it starts to taste/smell funny ( meat and fish are the exception, I make sure to use those up in plenty of time). I also loooove the taste of raw oats- when I was younger my dad used to make us a breakfast of grated apples, milk and raw oats with lots of fun add-ins like chopped bananas and raisins. Sadly my stomach doesn’t tend to deal with oats (raw or cooked) all that well these days, though.

My stomach and orange vegetables seem to be friends, thank goodness for that considering how much winter squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots I eat. I totally eat raw oats all the time and also put them raw in my smoothies and overnight oats and I’m still alive so I think you’re fine ;-).

The health and wellness show sounds like such a fun and I can’t wait to hear about it if you end up going! Oh, and I’m so glad you decided to join foodie penpals!

Seriously, how could anyone not like Michael Buble?! His voice is absolutely amazing! I swear I cannot hear the song “Home” without tearing up!

Sad to hear about the carrots and such…good thing summer’s right around the corner and you won’t have to rely on self tanning foods for a while! Lol But on a serious note, fiber (from different sources) seems to have that effect on me too. The other day I had some pancakes with coconut flour and chia seeds, a Quest bar a few hours later and HALF an apple a few hours after that and my stomach was messed up for the rest of the night…I mean, like I thought I was seriously going to be sick all night! All I can say is thank God for peppermint tea and phenergan! 🙁

Can’t wait to hear about the wellness event! How exciting! I love seeing stuff like that! And woo hoo for changes on the horizon!

haha I realized I do that in the mornings whenever I make oatmeal–I just nibble on some raw oats, but probably not in such a big quantity like you. I love the nuttiness of it! And omgness please don’t keep us on a cliffhanger for toooo long! I really am genuinely interested in seeing what transitions you’re going through as well as your future plans. 🙂

OMG raw oats! I have been having the exact same craving lately! What’s up with that? Haha. I seriously came home from work the other day craving oats in a pretty dramatic way, so I made some overnight oats. But rather than wait for them to at least set, I ate them right away. I was wondering the same thing…raw oats can’t be bad for you can they? I sure hope not haha. And grrr for that cryptic message! What’s going on?

I looked into it some more and apparently there’s nothing wrong with eating raw oats. Woo! So I guess as long as it doesn’t cause you any stomach woes, you can go ahead and enjoy 🙂

Cereal would not last long enough in my house to get past the use by date!!!
Raw carrots is one of my recent craves. I’ve not had them in too large of a quantity yet (is five carrots too many?…!) but I hope my tummy doesn’t go all squirrely guts on me if I have a few more. :S

I want to be a human-rights lawyer- so maybe indirectly I can have an impact on the health and wellness of someone in a way 🙂 I would love to hear about your future goals. I sometimes rock out when I’m walking and think no one else is around- the embarrassment factor I think might even be higher with no get away vehicle lol. Here’s a random fact- I played ocarina of time with my little brother yesterday and thought of you 😉 I tried coming up with a cool name for a Zelda fan but failed miserably- Zeldite isn’t to catchy- any suggestions? Lol Love Sophia

Awwr! That’s so sweet <3 Honestly, I've never been able to come up with any names when I play my Zelda games. I just go with Link to keep it all in line with the original story 🙂

future plans FTW!! Will you be judged? It’s the internet, of course you will…..but now you NEED to tell us! 😀 as for raw oats, not dangerous at all….expired cereal on the other hand…I dunno, I mean, cereal takes a long long time to expire, so I feel like when it’s expired it’s legit bad….but I dunno. I have a fear of eating expired anything after a bad experience with moldy yogurt in high school….squirrely guts x100000 lol. And oh yes! rock concerts in my car, all the time! There was one great day where I was driving with the windows down, And I was singing along to Beyonce…like legit belting it out….and I came up to a stoplight….everyone got to hear my concert lol

I would love to work in the field of health and wellness – inevitably there’s eye-rolling from some people whenever a blogger does that though. I want to teach Les Mills GroupEx classes, preferably all of the ones that are available in my region of the UK (Body Pump, Balance, Attack and Combat) but it’s going to have to wait until the infernal PhD of mine is over. I love those classes and their atmosphere, and it would be a dream to help others feel the same way…I seriously need to gain some self-confidence from somewhere though – it really shows when an instructor doesn’t have faith in themselves. All the best with your dreams in the field, whatever they may be!

P.S I can’t keep up with GoT because we don’t have HBO/the UK equivalent of Sky Atlantic. Gutted – I’ll have to wait for it on DVD. It’s meant to be the world’s most illegally downloaded show but I can’t find any links to the episodes…not that I’d download them illegally or anything….

Funny you mention the raw oats thing…I’ve actually been having the same breakfast for a couple days now: 1/2 cup oats + 2 tbsp AB + almond milk. It is so good. And yes, I’m always guilty of jammin’ out in my car .Windows down and all.

I can’t eat (many) raw carrots (at all) either! I used to bring them every day with my lunch and for the LIFE of me I couldn’t figure out why I had so many tummy troubles. Once I cut out the carrots and limited my RAW apple intake to one a day, tummy troubles dissipated. Amazing!

Raw oats actually make me sick! I tried the whole overnight oat thing and felt nauseous almost instantly! Now if I don’t have time to cook the oats on the stove in the morning I soak them in milk overnight then nuke it in the microwave in the morning. Great breakfast to bring for work too! It makes the oats extra plump….and who doesn’t like plump oats? =)

Overnight oats never sat well with me either, and I don’t think I snack on enough of the raw oats to cause a problem. There’s just something about the texture of them that I love.
