. WIAW … one big snack fe[a]st .

October 2, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 71 Comments

Ohhhh hey! Happy What I Ate Wednesday! ๐Ÿ˜€

Sorry for bailing on you guys yesterday, but after the craziness of being on the road for 5 days, I was in serious need of some down time. I made an honest attempt at going through the pictures from my trip in hopes of getting a recap up, buuuuuut quickly abandoned that ambitious plan in favour of an at-home spa night. One mani, pedi, facial, and pamper session later, and I feel like a new woman — thank goodness, because the ‘old woman’ was starting to feel a little rough around the edges. I guess road trips will do that to ya.

And speaking of road trips, what do you say we kick off the recap by talking about everybody’s favourite subject — food. I already shared some of the snacks I packed for the road, but let’s get into the nitty, gritty details of how it all went down, shall we?

WIAW

Breakfast was pretty much the only stable and predictableย meal meal of my entire trip. While everything else was basically “eat whatever, whenever, and however you can” (read: lots of snacking, eating in the car, grabbing and going, etc.), breakfasts were always prepped and eaten in the hotel. The first half of the trip had me eating yogurt messes with fruit, cereal, and AB, while the second half allowed me to enjoy a couple of oatmeal bowls thanks to the presence of en suite kitchenettes…

Oswego Kitchen
Cove Kitchen

Hotel Room Oats

I don’t have any pics of the bowls I actually ate since the lighting was all sorts of terribad and I was operating under the “function over form” mentality, but let’s just use our imaginations and say it basically looked exactly like the bowl I had for breakfast yesterday:

October Oatmeal

I used quick oats that I pre-measured before packing into individual Ziploc baggies, and topped ’em with roasted almond butter that I cart around with me wherever I go and honey packets that I ninjad from Starbucks “for my tea.” Shh… I won’t tell if you won’t ๐Ÿ˜‰

And speaking of Starbucks, I wasn’t exactly the most faithful to my go-to brew on this trip…

McCafe on the Road

Say what you will about their food, but McDonalds’ drip coffee is damn tasty. Enjoyed on the first day of travelling, at some random stop along the highway.

Coffee on the Pier

Cappuccino from Blenz Coffee on the second morning of travel. Enjoyed in Horseshoe Bay while waiting to board the ferry to Nanaimo.

Coffee Day Cappuccino

Celebrating National Coffee Day with a cappuccino from Bean Scene Coffee in Kelowna, BC.

Lunches… ohhh lunches are a blur of passing forests and farmlands. The only lunch I remember that wasn’t eaten in the car was the one we ate on the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver. We went to the onboard cafeteria (I think it was called WhiteSpot?), and I enjoyed some sweet potato fries that were kind of epic…

Sweet Potato Fries

Andย dinners, like lunches, were mostly a blur. My parents went out to eat on a few occasions while I opted to pack, snack, and explore instead…

Ocean Exploring
Shoreline Exploring

The only more concrete dinner I can recall is the one we had on our last night of travel… We were tired, hungry, and our food supply had dwindled, so we stopped at some random roadside pizza joint and each got individual pizzas. I wasn’t feeling all that adventurous so I just went with a classic pepperoni and cheese…

Fast Food Pizza

On a side note, this meal reminded me why I almost never eat fast food — hellooooo heartburn ๐Ÿ˜ก

Other than that, my trip was pretty much one bigย snack fest…

Road Trip AB

Almond butter… never leave home without it. Sadly, this jar didn’t survive the trip. Let us observe a moment of silence…

BC Harvest Produce

The best thing about driving through BC? Roadside produce standsย everywhere. Sadly, Mom & Dad wouldn’t let me pick up any pumpkin or squash (!!!!!), but I definitely made up for it with fresh orchard apples and pears.

Road Trip Apple Chips

… but even the abundance of fresh fruit didn’t deter me from enjoying my favourite apple chips.

Packed Kabocha

I wasn’t joking when I said I have a serious addiction to kabocha — it’s so bad that I roasted one up the night before I left and packed it for the trip. Sadly, there wasn’t enough to last me the whole way through.

Packed Broccoli

… I also may or may not have done the same thing with broccoli… ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I ended up demolishing pretty much everything that I packed, but for some reason these are the only things I thought to take pictures of. My mind works in mysterious ways ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Anywho, I would say that roadtrip eating (aka: neverending snackfeasting)ย was a dream come true considering how big of a snacking fiend I am, but apparently my body isn’t as big a fan of this approach to eating as I thought — the constant snacking has put my appetite off the charts for the past couple of days, which I’m assuming is my body’s way of making up for lost time. Ahh well.ย It happens sometimes, and it all balances out in the end anyways.

Happy Wednesday, friends!

    1) YES on McD’s coffee. Scary but true.
    2) I would love to know (maybe you have posted this already) the itinerary of where you went. Visiting the Western Canada coast with my husband is on the list of dream trips – it is so ridiculously beautiful.

The West coast of Canada is definitely a must-see, and I’d really recommend going all the way over to Vancouver Island and staying in Tofino and Victoria — those were two of my favourite places from the trip. I didn’t post my entire itinerary, but you can see some pictures from the road here http://www.runningwithspoons.com/2013/10/03/scenes-and-thoughts-from-the-road/

Awww! Do you see it? In the coffee? Turn your head slightly to the left and just TELL me that doesn’t look kinda maybe sorta like a pumpkin! Ha! Love that pic of the coffee in front of the ferry station! I feel like such a goober…I never realized Nanaimo bars were named AFTER an actual place in Canada! Der!

I definitely prefer eating breakfast at home more since I usually wake up STARVING and have little patience when it comes to food…and well, let’s face it, I make a better pancake! ๐Ÿ˜‰ But there IS something about going out for breakfast for DINNER! Mmm, Waffle House! #noshame

I just had pizza for dinner tonight…though mine was homemade. I went Greek with bell pepper, tomato, olives, and feta on Trader Joe’s whole wheat crust…man, I forgot how good that stuff is!

๐Ÿ˜† Okay, I sees the pumpkin. And if your dinner was the pizza you posted on IG… consider me jealous and hungry.

PS – Yes… yes you do make better pancakes ๐Ÿ˜›

I haven’t had fast food in awhile, but I love food questions so I’m excited to answer anyways ๐Ÿ™‚ Burger King is probably my favorite fast food place of all time. Plain burger with ketchup, french fries or onion rings, coke slushie… Hershey pie for dessert. McDonalds for breakfast though with their pancakes! And Wendy’s for their chicken nuggets with sweet and sour sauce or ranch… ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m a cheese only girl when it comes to pizza. Also not really a coffee drinker, but Starbuck’s frappucinos are pretty spectacular in my opinion. Hmm. Caramel or mocha.

So this post pretty much sums up my eating life. But I can definitely relate to having an unusually crazy appetite after consistently living off snacks for a few days.

I love making my own yogurt bowls or oatmeal when travelling too. You know how much I love to eat out for lunch and dinner, but when it comes to breakfast I prefer my own. My yogurt bowls and oatmeal are almost always better than something I could get at a breakfast joint. ๐Ÿ˜›

Those sweet potato fries look perfect! They remind me a bit of the ones at The Works (do you have those out in Alberta?) – they’re so crispy and delicious! My favourite fast food is Subway, Pita Pit, and Chipotle. Usually I get Subway though because it’s the most common and accessible.

The Works? Nope, I don’t actually think we have that out here. And I think I ODd on Subway when I was younger because I ate it almost every day for like a year and now even the smell makes me a little queasy ๐Ÿ˜†

I’m tempted to physically LOL right now but alas, I’m in the library so its not possible. I LOVE that you packed roasted kabocha and …broccoli? That must be the most unique road trip snack I have come across.

I agree with the Mcdonalds drip coffee being good- I preferred it when I was in the States over Starbucks..but ONLY for drip coffee… their lattes were like paint water. Recently, I’ve been sticking to the $1 7/11 coffees seeing as its the only coffee under $3.50 available here. No joke. On weekends I enjoy breakfast/brunch out with friends (its a pretty big culture here to do that!) but other times, I’m happy doing my own thing at home (or tupperwared!)

I’ve LOL’d in the middle of Starbucks before — totally acceptable ๐Ÿ˜‰ And the price of coffee is insane over there… I think I’d go bankrupt ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Either that or I’d just have to start brewing me own and stealing cups from Starbucks to carry it around in….

I love to go out to breakfast… when I could eat eggs. Now, I have to enjoy my breakfasts at home. They are so peaceful that way.. ๐Ÿ˜‰ My go to fast food place is Chipotle… that counts right?

You are a master snack packer girl! You and I would travel well together!

Breakfast is definitely the one meal a day I like to have at home. I so appreciate having a kitchen in my hotel rooms for that reason!

Mmmm, snackalicious! I generally prefer breakfast at home unless I’m on vacation. If I’m out touring a new city, I love finding a fun coffee spot where I can people watch.

I would LOVE to do that in Europe at some street corner cafe… But even then it would probably be a later morning type deal rather than breakfast — I just can’t wait that long to get something in my belly.

We have so many great coffee shops in town, when I’m not making french press at home, I’ll go to one of those. I love eating breakfast out! It’s probably my favorite meal to eat out. We have a restaurant here that serves a vegan brunch buffet that’s ridiculous!
