. cookies and milk are overrated .

April 28, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 73 Comments

I swear that everyone was talking about cookies on Friday. Blogs I was reading. People I was talking to. Commercials on TV. Cookies, cookies, cookies. Okay, so in reality the topic of cookies probably only came up about 3 or 4 times, but you know how when you want something, you suddenly start noticing it everywhere?

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Oh yes, friends, I was craving cookies big time, and with good reason too – I can’t even remember the last time I baked any 😯 Even looking through my blog archives didn’t really reveal much.  All I know is that it’s been well over a month, and for a self-proclaimed cookie addict, that’s bordering well onto blasphemous. Sure, I can blame the neglect on cakes and muffins, but there really is no excuse. So, in an effort to make up for my blunder (read: satisfy my sweet tooth), I baked…

Oatmeal Cookie Batter

I ran into some problems though… First, I didn’t know what kind of cookies to make. I knew I wanted oatmeal, but I didn’t know what I wanted to toss in. Chocolate chips were an obvious choice, but – and don’t laugh – so were raisins. Maybe I’m getting old, but oatmeal raisin cookies are becoming more and more appealing. Back in the day, I remember nearly having a fit whenever I’d bite into a raisin cookie thinking it was chocolate, but somewhere along the way, my hatred for wrinkly grapes was replaced by fondness, and now I may even prefer them – it really depends on the day. Luckily, there was a simple solution to my first problem – use chocolate chips in half the batch and raisins in the other.

Adding Chocolate
Adding Raisins
Cookies into the Oven
Cookies out of the Oven

My second problem was a bit more complicated. Everyone knows that warm cookies taste the best with cold milk, but… I didn’t have any milk on hand. I probably could have run over to my neighbor’s (read: Starbucks) and asked for a cup, but that would have risked the cookies going cold on me, which would have defeated the whole purpose.

Melty Chocolate Chip Cookie

Solution? Warm cookies and cold ice cream…

Warm Cookies, Cold Ice Cream

Oh.Em.Gee. This may come across as blasphemous, but I’m going to go ahead and say it anyways. Cookies and milk are overrated. Cookies and ice cream is where it’s at.

Happy Sunday, friends!

Oatmeal cookies: with raisins or chocolate chips?
Do you lick the spoons/bowls even when raw eggs are involved?
I can’t do it. It’s so tempting, but my fear of food poisoning keeps me away.

Haha! I always lick the bowl when it come to…well ANYTHING! Cookies, cakes, muffins, PANCAKES even! Hey, I’m not dead yet…so let that serve as proof to ya! 😉

I’ve never really been an oatmeal cookie fan (please don’t hate me). My favorite cookies are almond shortbread, but when it comes to cookies and milk…or in your much better/BRILLIANT alternative of ice cream, I would HAVE to go with something with chocolate in it. Peanut butter chocolate chip? I think SO!!

So I know I just said restraint can be a good thing when dealing with cravings…well that was before I saw this post. I’d put this in the quality category though. Cookies and ice cream sounds heavenly.

I’ve had an urge to bake cookies lately too – except I’ve been holding off because it didn’t make sense to bake right before I moved. And now I’m about to leave on a trip on Wednesday, so I guess I’ll have to put off my cookie baking until I get back. 😛

I love both chocolate chips and raisins in the same cookie! One of my favourite cookies from a local bakery (that just opened in February and is totally nut free!!!!) has both in it and they are seriously the perfect cookie.

Amanda,,I have an issue with ice cream…like I buy a tiny pint like that but NEED to eat the entire carton (yes, the entire carton)….see back in my running days I”d have nights when Id eat 2 L of ice cream AFTER pizza and chocolates, etc…but i was young and crazy and running, etc etc…

    Now I’m exact opposite..so I can’t trust myself with anything 🙁
I WISH I’d followed the eating trajectory you have…seems sensible and graduated and normal….you can splurge and should ..and i mean EVERY day

but me…I have no …control. I’m up at midnight eating 5 lara bars in a row just cause…then wake up so sluggish and constipated (tiny hard nuggets, help) that I’m a mess and can barely go for a 15 minute walk outside.

Like at lunch then, I ate a big lunch and ended it with bread, and I ate like 4 slices of bread…..just cause.

    I just lose it 🙁

    Other questions for you:
    – Favorite enjoy life snack bars?
    – do you like sourdough bread? I always avoid gluten cause docs tell me to since I have extreme digestive issues, BUT I have stayed away from it, and zero difference, so ..screw that 🙂
    – any other Amy meals you like? There are only a few here where I’m to, but just curious if you’ve tried the lasagnas and mac and cheese or indian ones (?)…I used to eat them a lot way back when, but now I’m carb phobic and etc etc…ugh.

My poor body. I’m so “backed up” that the back pain is extreme 🙁

    I’m sorry. Again, I’m embarrassed. I won’t post anymore unless I’m positive.

My favorite Enjoy Life snack bars are definitely the cocoa loco ones. Anything with chocolate is a big win. And yup! Sourdough bread is a good one. As for Amy’s meals, I only really eat the pizzas on a regular basis, but I’ve had the mac and cheese and lasagna and thought they were pretty good.

You know it’s been far too long since I had a good cookie. This must be rectified!

Nothing tops a classic warm chocolate chip cookie…however, as amazing as my secret recipe chocolate chip cookies are, I make a mean oatmeal raisin chocolate chip as well…While the Main Street Bakery in Disney World is my all time favorite for an original chocolate chip, I did experience an amazing, like no other, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie from Hershey Park that was given to me after the Half Marathon. I can’t even explain it or figure out the exact ingredients (I have a knack for figuring out other people’s recipes) but it was like no other oatmeal chocolate chip cookie I have ever tasted. Amazing.

I think we’d make great friends. Just last week I wasn’t feeling like milk or yogurt, so I cut up a nice slab of your choc chip pumpkin bread, heated it up, and put a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. Smartest decision ever!

My sister does the same thing you used to with oatmeal raisin cookies! She has always hated raisins and other dried fruits, which is funny because I love dried fruit, especially raisins. I have to say I’m more of a fan of chocolate chips in cookies, because cooked raisins just seem weird to me, especially when they’re warm and get all mushy. But I’m allllll for the cookie and ice cream combo–way better than cookies and milk!

Hi! I used to follow your blog way back in the day (I had a different blog name back then, I’ve gone through so many though that I don’t know which one you would remember me by) and I saw you comment on olivetorun’s blog and got so excited to see your name, lol! I love your blog!

And cookies and ice cream sounds AMAZING right now. YUM!

Lol, too many to count. I just abandoned the name applesandglue. Before that I was stopping for daisies. I think those are the only ones I might have been that you might recognize. Maybe. Maybe not! 🙂
