. WIAW … round thirteen .

August 3, 2011 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 81 Comments

[un]Lucky number 13!

You know, I’ve never been a superstitious girl, but before we start today’s party, I just wanted to briefly mention the nasty bit of bad luck that I experienced this morning.

Remember this cup?

Well, it got a makeover…

… and just between you and me, I think it looked better before…

Sad face.

Lesson #1: Don’t try to carry too many things at once – it will result in casualties.

. – . – . – .

I woke up this morning and immediately realized two very important things. First, the days are getting shorter – it’s no longer as bright outside when I wake up at 5 AM, which means that Fall is on its way. Yippee! Second, something was viscously gnawing on the walls of my stomach. Very ouch. Fortunately, breakfast came around shortly and tamed the beast in my belly.

Focus! Sorry. My brain gets a little fuzzy when I’m hungry.

Much better. Eggy bananafied steelies topped with almond butter and pudding. No more gnawing.

Unfortunately, the peace and quiet was short lived. About an hour and a half (wtf?!?!) after I took my last bite of breakfast, I started feeling that fatigued-and-agitated restlessness that I associate with hunger, so I had a [mid]-mid-morning snack…

[A few handfuls of blueberries and the last bit of cottage cheese in the container]

… which did an okay job at holding me over until it was time for my pre-workout snack…

I normally go the banana with almond butter route, but I just wasn’t feeling it this morning. Yeah, I’m kind of shocked too. Instead, I had a handful of dark chocolate drops (which is just a fancy name for “big chocolate chips”), a nectarine, and some vanilla almond butter protein frosting for dipping.

Today’s workout was Stage 2, workout A, of the NROLFW workout plan, and it whooped me. I have no idea why, but I started feeling so exhausted halfway through. I still managed to finish, but it definitely wasn’t one of my better workouts. I blame it on the lack of banana in my pre-workout snack…

Lesson #2: If it ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it.

I pouted for a little while, but my pity-party was rudely interrupted by the beast in my belly, who was once again demanding to be fed. Fine. Lunch is served…

[Salad beast, yogurt mess, mango protein smoothie]

And with that, the cranky-stank went away, and Amanda came out to play. Hooray!

*cringe* Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I also couldn’t play. I spent most of the afternoon and early evening getting some work done on the computer, while snacking, naturally…

[Cinnamon Raisin Bran Muffin]

[Chocolate pudding mixed with cocoa powder and topped with almond butter. Cookie dough ball]

… and reading [A Dog’s Purpose]. What? Like you’re 100% productive at work. Pft.

Lesson #3: All work and no play makes for an extremely boring day.

This book wasn’t much in the way of entertainment, though. I mean, it’s not bad, per say, but I find myself just wanting to get through it without being really interested. Lackluster at best.

Thankfully, dinner was a much more pleasurable experience…

[Sweet and savory eggy oats, topped with hummus, banana, and cottage cheese]

… and the rest of the evening looks to be pretty promising as well. I’ll be heading out to get one final look at my new condo before finalizing all the paperwork, and it’ll be mine in the middle of September. Eeeee. I still can’t believe it’s actually happening 😀 I’ll try to snag some pictures for you guys while I’m in there, but no promises… The current owners still live there, and I don’t want to violate their privacy.

I hope you guys are having a great night! Much love, until tomorrow.

. – . – . – .

Do you ever have poor workouts? How do you handle them? Truth be told, I pout. At least for a little while. I try so hard to treat my body well, that I feel kind of cheated if it starts misbehaving.

And on a completely unrelated note…

I haven’t posted any recipes in far too long. What kind would you like to see? Something sweet? Something savory? A specific meal/snack? Let me know!

Cinnamon Raisin Muffins?! I bet those would be good with a certain nut buttah. 😉 I hear ya about the pre-workout meal! Bananas are my absolute FAVORITE to power me through. 🙂

I am sorry for the mug, it was so pretty!! But at least there is a reason to go shopping 🙂
I also have poor workouts every now and then, I just think that my body sometimes needs more rest than I allowed it to them and then it acts “weird” 🙂

the thing is with workouts.. you can’t always be on form 100%. there is noways your body can sustain giving it 100% everyday. When i have a bad workout i think.. ok what happened. was i tired? did i train really hard the last few days? and try and plan the next week to accomodate it. and then i just sort of take it as like.. well atleast i moved my body today- better then watching friends re-runs and drinking tea. ( oh-wait. not so sure about that). and then the NEXT day i come back leaner and meaner. well..not sure about that either. But definitely – some sort of come back is made!

You’re totally right – can’t be 100% all the time. I think the thing that gets to me the most is that suffering through a workout reminds me too much of the past, which is something I never want to go back to!

awwww about your mug, bummer! maybe a craft project is in order 🙂 I feel you on the workout thing, today was blah for me too, but I just try to remind myself the next workout will be just that much better… after I pout for a few minutes of course. And I have a request: whatever you decide to make just make a double batch and send me some, mmmkay? 😉

Of course. I think everyone has some bad experiences with exercise. Sometimes I feel too tired, unmotivated, angry at my body and mind for being ‘inadequate’… But what can you do except relax your standards, accept that today wasn’t great but next time it will be better, and respect and love your body? Obviously this is extremely hard, but I’m hoping it can be achieved over time.

I would love some sweet recipes – biggest sweet tooth ever over here 🙂

Your WIAWs always puts a big smile on my face- your food looks yum yum and I cant stop loving how regulary it shows up 😀 I tell you again and again- but you truly are an amazing inspiration to me!!
So sorry about your mug 🙁 And your workout! But poor workouts will happen from time to time. I love my runs when I feel light and speedy and energetic, but I hate them when I feel weak. For me, I bet it can be fixed with more foods- I have already felt improvement from eating more regulary. But when I have my bad workouts, i really try to focus on the fact thats its just for a day.. yesterday might was great, and my body is just not fully recovered. Even though you fuel up, I guess your body was just a little tired! You will rock a new workout tomorrow 😀
For a recipe, sweet please 🙂 With chocolate. And nut butter. Or sweet potato. I bet Ill like it whatever youll post 🙂

No! My comment was going to be about how much I love that mug. 🙁
When I have a poor workout I usually just try to remember that I did what I could and that’s all I could do. If I don’t even try then that’s another story.
And I vote for savory recipes! I love sweets, but savory foods seem to get neglected with all of the yummy muffins and cookies floating around the blog world.

Poor mug! I liked seeing it in the background 🙁 .

As for workouts, sometimes I just don’t have enough energy to do them the way I usually do but it is not a big problem for me. Instead of pouting or directly quitting, I do the same exercises but in smaller series.

I get down on myself if I have a bad workout. I only have so much time in the day to fit in a good sweat session and hate ‘wasting’ it on a lackluster workout. Even though I know something is better than nothing … I’d much prefer to give it my all!

I love all your breakfast concoctions! I’m already drooling for my eggified hot cereal in the morning!

well even if your day wasn’t the most exciting, at least it was full of yummy eats! 🙂

Whenever I have a bad workout, it’s usually because I’m overdoing it – either not sleeping enough or just doing too much working out! If i can chalk it up to that, then I scale things back and try to rest. But if I’ve been sleeping well and doing a modest amount of working out, then maybe I’m just in a funk! Yeah, I get angry for a bit but usually by the time I’ve stretched and cooled down I can put it behind me and say “oh well! hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow!”

As for recipes…how bout one with veggies?? 😀

I love all the lessons you embedded. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it is probably the most important with regards to working out.. I have had bathroom issues, energy issues, and focus issues when I change what works. People always criticize it, but routine can be a good thing! I don’t have poor workouts often, but usually the poor workouts stem from bathroom issues. perhaps that is TMI, but it’s true, and it got me to a sports nutritionist because I can’t take it!

I would like to see muffin recipes because they make my world go round. Or perhaps a scone. I just love baking stuff!

I simply must try these sweet and savory oats! I do love sweet and salty. Hummus and ‘nanner?! I can’t even fathom how delicious that combination must be- though I imagine it’s pure amazing. Nom!

Truth be told I’m not much of a workout person lately with trying to gain weight and all. I miss the adrenaline bunches, though! I do yoga from time to time and ab exercises. If I’m having a “stiff” day in yoga, I get a bit ticked and pout too. Why can’t I bend as far today? Wah! And then I get frustrated, which sort of defeats the mind-calming / balancing effect yoga is MEANT to evoke. Eeep! Oops.

You already know I want something sweet. I love muffins! Perhaps a chocolate-banana muffin? Or maybe a fall-inspired muffin. Like pumpkin? OOOH! What about a maple-cinnamon flavored muffin? I bet raisins would be good in something like that. Or maybe some smoothie recipes- I’ve tried making a few and they’ve all been lackluster. Perhaps smoothies just aren’t my thing, but then again- hot oats weren’t my thing before trying your method, either 😉 Okay, I’m drooling. Moving on…

On another note- tomorrow will be my first time having overnighters since trying our egg-y banana-y steel cutters! I’m obsessed. Oh schnap. How I love my oats so!

Not every workout can be absolutely amazing- even athletes have crappy ones from time to time! I don’t dwell on them and it makes me appreciate the workouts where I kick ass even more.
I reeeeally look forward to when you post recipes- iv made enough of them! Your muffins, cookie dough balls & protein puddings get made weekly, as far as I’m concerned you can do no wrong in the kitch.I don’t mind the type of recipe but I’m probably more so a fan of the

I pout too, even though I know it’s normal to not have a fantastic workout every time I set foot in the gym. There are lots of fabulous workouts in your future! Now…get me some of those chocodrops! To answer your questions, I get a little bummed when I have a not-so-awesome workout but, I try not to let it get to me too much. I know that for me personally, how I feel changes drastically throughout each month due to internal and external changes and cycles so I know if I have a poor workout, there’s probably a good reason for it, and I just hope that the next workout will be better!
