. thinking out loud #51 .

October 31, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 76 Comments

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. First and foremost, Happy Halloween!! Believe it or not, today really is October 31st, which means it really is Halloween. Cray.zee.

Happy Halloween

2. That being said… it doesn’t even remotely feel like Halloween over in these parts. I don’t know what it is, but that eerie ghoulishness is just missing from the air, know what I mean? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that we don’t have any snow when we’re usually buried in it by now, but yeah… just not feeling it this year.

3. On that note… does anyone else get the feeling that Halloween is kind of dying off? I’ve barely seen any decorated houses, and most stores are already rockin’ the Christmas gear. Me? I didn’t even carve my pumpkins or buy any candy. I live in a secure building so I don’t get any trick-or-treaters coming around, but I’ve noticed a decline in kids in general. Back in my day, the streets used to be absolutely packed with kids, but now? I don’t really see that many out anymore.

4. Maybe a little festive music will help set the mood?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpvdAJYvofI&w=560&h=315″]

5. Newp… didn’t work. But I’ll probably be walking around singing that song all day now, which is fine by me because Nightmare Before Christmas just so happens to be one of my favourite movies of all time, Halloween or otherwise. Confession: I’m the biggest wimp when it comes to horror movies, or at least I used to be — I can’t say for sure anymore since it’s probably been 10+ years since I’ve watched one (The Ring in 2002).

Nightmare Before Christmas

6. Let’s mix a little Throwback Thursday action in with today’s Thinking Out Loud post, shall we? How cute was I in my homemade dinosaur costume, circa 1990? Awww. My mom made it for me and it remains my favourite costume to this day… I think it’s actually still buried somewhere in my parents’ basement. Huh. I wonder if I can pawn it off on my future kids…

Dinosaur Costume

7. One of my favourite parts about trick-or-treating when I was a kid? Going through my stash at the end of the night and trading candy with my friends. Did you guys ever do that? And if you did, do you remember how seriously you took it? Like… each candy had a concrete value and you’d only trade for something of equal value, whether that meant a 1:1 or 1:2 trade? Ohhh good times.

8. So let’s talk candy. We all had (have) our favourites, and then the kind that made us want to go back and egg the houses of the people that gave them to us. My best of the best? KitKats and Skittles. The ones that put neighbours on my [egg] hit-list? That weird individually wrapped fudge/taffy that was always hard as rocks. Or peanuts! I’m not sure if it’s still a thing, but people used to hand out peanuts back in the day. Stank.freaking.eye.

Halloween Candy

9.  I’m going to share my exciting Halloween night plans with you guys. Are you ready? Brace yourselves. Tonight I plan to: lounge around my place in my pink PJ’s, toss in The Nightmare Before Christmas, spend some time with J, and hopefully find some motivation to make some homemade candy. I was thinking about these Twix bars, buuuuut AB/chocolate cups are a serious possibility as well.

10. And to end things on a completely random and unrelated note… I burnt the roof of my mouth on steamed broccoli the other day. Who does that?!?! I mean, who’s so eager to eat broccoli that they’ll risk burning their mouth on it?! I am, apparently. Feel free to judge and/or laugh.

Have a happy Thursday and a safe Halloween! 😀

. – . – . – .

Anyone else not really feeling Halloweeny this year?
What are your plans for tonight?
Favourite Halloween movie? Are you a fan of horror flicks?
Favourite Halloween candy?

I have a hunch that Reese’s is going to be a big one…

Hmmm that is kind of weird! I noticed that Halloween seemed to be a lot “quieter” around these parts lately, but I guess it’s slowly happening all over? And much to YOUR dismay, I love the reese’s chocolate people hand out! Other than that, you can keep all the other candies. 😛 And you DO LOOK SO STINKIN’ CUTE in that costume! It’s so sweet of your mom to do all that for you–maybe I’ll be able to for Selah in the future–but sewing, knitting, and anything of that sort of activity is usually my worst skill. Have a beautiful day Amanda!

That costume is adorable!! Also the Ring was (or is?) totally frightening and I can see why it scared you. I remember having nightmares when I was 12 from watching it.

I definitely feel like Halloween is fading away. I mean, as soon as it’s over, Christmas EVERYTHING starts coming out! And as much as I love Christmas, I also love Thanksgiving, and I think Christmas should have that anticipation aspect with it. But anyway…
Favorite Halloween candy: Reese’s and Baby Ruth’s. Lease favorite: Jaw Breakers. Like, what is the point of those things?
I also am the biggest wimp when it comes to horror movies. Even kids’ Halloween movies freak me out. *shiver* I think it’s mostly the fakeness of the makeup that scares me with those.
And lastly, I’ll be helping my mom hand out candy tonight and hopefully snuggling up in my warm kangaroo costume. There are some parties going on, but I’m not really feelin’ that scene right now. 😉

Reeses ALWAYS required at least two candies in return for a trade. They still hold very true to my heart, but honestly I’m all about smooth, milk chocolate this year. Hershey’s bars, M&M’s, Hershey’s Bliss Candies

    I need chocolate NOW.

I’m currently sitting at a bake sale decked out in full costume, so I have no choice but to feel particularly Halloween-y right now 😉 I only have a minute, but I need to tell you that:
    1. your appreciation for TNBC is number like, a million and seven on the list of things I adore you for.
    2. You are an amazingly cute dinosaur.
    3. People gave out peanuts for Halloween? That’s up there with toothbrushes and apples for things that are not good ideas to hand out to small children.

I think it totally depends on where you live. We live in a very young neighborhood FULL of kids, so I’ve already seen a bazillion costumes at the gym, photos on FB, and kids walking to school, and it’s not even noon yet. I’m typically not a huge Halloween person, but I am just a tad more excited this year now that I have a little baby to dress up! 🙂 We’re just going to walk to a few neighbors’ houses and then hand out candy. Should be a nice and fun low key evening!

I’m with you on not feeling so Halloweeny. I have a dentist appointment and that’s it! Haha.

I was never handed peanuts as a kid but yes, that would definitely result in the stink eye. WTF?

I feel like I don’t see as many trick or treaters anymore but I think that’s because they all hit up the neighborhoods with rich people where they know they can score big time.

There was actually a ton of Halloween decorated houses this year in my neighborhood. I think around these parts, Halloween was so far pushed. People were already preparing for Halloween like two months ago…now we are preparing for Christmas and it’s not even Halloween yet!

LOL Every single time I cook with my mom, we burn our mouthes taste-testing things. We never learn a pot of boiling soup is going to be stinkin’ hot when you take a sip. Ouch. I think my mouth has a permanent covering from burning it so many times on coffee, too.

I’m a HUGE fan of horror movies but rarely watch them anymore… Partly because all of the new ones stink big time! Give me Hocus Pocus any day, though!

My favorite Halloween candy is Reeses (duh) but I LOVED getting bottle caps too! The birch beer flavored ones were the BEST. Now I want some. REALLY bad.

And favorite Halloween candy… when I was a kid, it was definitely the mini Snickers! I would always trade my sister for those because she doesn’t like nuts 🙂 And now, it’s Reese’s… obviously 😉

Little will be spending his night in the village with the Mister hitting up the neighbourhood to feed his sugar addiction while I plan on hanging out with my friend in her kids fort drinking wine and handing out candy. You were the cutest dinosaur…love it! I was (and still am) definitely a Reese’s girl although homemade almond butter cups sound equally delicious- cant wait to see what you come with! If you think Halloween is dying out, you should hear what one lady in the States is sending out: “fat letters” instead of candy to discourage obesity and poor eating habits. I know, I know- it’s APPALLING to say the least! I hate horror movies! Although I am sure it’s more of a thriller than horror film, I recently saw Prisoners with Jake Gyllenhaal and it left me terrified…and I am pretty sure the rest of the cinema was aware of my sentiments given the screams I couldn’t hold in!

I’m sorry to say that Reeses are my favorite candy….a special someone of mine taped a bunch of them to my apartment door Monday night and each one had a quote on it from my favorite movies. Attached was a note labeling them as “brain food” since I had two more exams this week. It was so sweet on so many levels 😉 But yeah I’ve noticed that Halloween isn’t gathering as much excitement and I don’t know what that’s about. I HATE trick-or-treating! I never liked going as a kid and I used to hide in my parents’ basement when I was in high school when they’d come around. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t stand it! I think the novelty of Halloween wore off once we were old enough to go and buy our own candy. Especially once we were driving and do whatever we wanted as teens, in college and now as an adult, I can get candy whenever I want. Although, it is still fun to see what the kids are getting and sneak some from my son.Although, really, nothing excites me much in the trick or treat basket. I would much rather a baked good than a candy bar now…I will take him trick or treating with friends later and have fun watching them gorge themselves on candy that we keep in the house year round anyway…This year will be better than last year since last year Hurricane Sandy had just hit so most people were NOT out trick or treating. We didn’t lose power or receive any damage but the world was off its axis here so Halloween really didn’t exist.

I’m totally not feeling Halloweenie either! It’s not a big deal AT ALL here in Australia. We brought the little ones to a park today where they were having this massive Halloween party with bouncy castles and music, and kids walk around to restaurants and cafes with tiny pint-sized candy baskets. But that’s all there is.My friends laughed when I told them about our “pillow cases full of treats”.They don’t trick-or-treat at houses, just at the various stores in the neighbourhood have people at the door giving out candy! And costumes are all “scary” (goblins, skeletons, etc). No humorous or play on words like back home. Pretty funny!!

With that being said, B and I are pumped to hand things out to our neighborhood full of kiddos and see all of their cool costumes.
