. thinking out loud #34 .

June 6, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 87 Comments

1. I hate to start off with bad news, but let’s just get this out of the way so that we can move on to better things… My beloved computer of three years has officially bitten the dust…

Dead Mac

He’d been acting up for a few weeks before completely shutting down and refusing to start back up a few days ago (hence why I was working with pretty limited pictures in yesterday’s WIAW). I took him in to get looked at and they said it’s probably the hard drive. Great. The good news is that it’s still on warranty (thank goodness I decided to buy the extended one). The bad news is that it could take up to 3 weeks to fix. Ugh. At least I still have my laptop to work with… assuming that doesn’t go again…

2. In an effort to cheer myself up, I decided to do a little retail therapy… Okay, so I wasn’t really feeling crestfallen in the least, but seeing as there was a Shopper’s Drug Mart right next door, I decided to hop on over and see what they had to offer in the realms of beauty products and food. Apparently, they had quite a bit…

Shopper's Buys

I walked out with some old favorites (TRESemmé heat protectant // Simple cleansing wipes), and some new finds that I’ve been wanting to try for a while (CHI silk infusion // Essie base coat // Bioderma cleansing water // Yes To cucumber facial wipes and moisturizer). I’ll let you guys know how I like them. Who knows? They may just end up in my monthly favorites…

3. While I was out and about, I came across what may possibly be the worst parking job I’ve ever seen…

Bad Park Job

Not only did this… wonderfully considerate person… take up two handicapped parking spots, but there wasn’t even a handicapped sticker on the car. Oh.so.fail.

4. Another fail? This dry shampoo from göt2b…

Bad Dry Shampoo

They were out of my favorite dry shampoo the last time I went to pick some up, so I decided to go out on a limb and try a new one. Bad idea. Unless you have grey hair or want to have grey hair, leave this one sitting on the shelf; and it doesn’t even work very well so you’re not missing out. There’s no way I’m even going to be able to salvage this one. It’s already in the trash.

5. Speaking of dry shampoo, did you know that you can use it to add some really nice volume to your hair? I have pretty fine hair, and getting it to show some enthusiasm in the volume department has always been a little tricky… but that was before I discovered the magic of [good] dry shampoo. What I’ll do is spray some on my roots when I finish drying my hair after a shower, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then shake it all out. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but it makes my hair feel a lot thicker in addition to making it so much easier to work with. Seriously… give it a shot if you suffer from limp hair.

6. Dear computer…

Mispelling Pinterest

By now, you should be well aware of the fact that, like Google (which you do not squiggly me for), Pinterest is indeed a proper noun. Get with the times. Please and thank you.

7. I’m embarrassed. It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve moved into my place, and I have yet to finish unpacking all of my boxes…

Boxes of Books

And the worst part of all? Those boxes are filled with my beloved books. The problem is that I’m not quite sure how I want to go about displaying them. I’d love to have a huge library a la Beauty and the Beast, but until my Prince Charming comes along and gifts me with one, I’m afraid that my books will have to keep hanging out in boxes and random places around my home, like in the cupboards and the drawers under my bed…

Books Under the Bed
Books in the Cupboard

8. I’m really loving these longer, summerish days, but I have to admit that they make going to sleep early a bit of a pain in the butt. For reasons unknown to me, I was feeling extra exhausted last night so I decided to go to sleep around 9:30. It was still bright out 😯 I’m thinking that I need to invest in a good eye mask or something.

9. I’m really digging the new song by Thirty Seconds to Mars…

[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrFQRn2yYWs&w=560&h=315″]

10. And since today’s post started off on a sour note, let’s end it on a good one…

Funny story, my hubby totally parks like that. In his defense, he does have a giant truck with ZERO turning radius, but it drives me bonkers. He does NOT park in the handicap place though and does a good job of parking away from other cars.
My hair is super thin as well, to the point that I have to wash it everyday. Ive tried dry shampoo (ok, only one brand) and it didn’t get rid of the greasiness all day. It lasted for a few hours, then it was back and I was looking rather…gross. lol

I won’t give Ninja the stank eye as long as he’s staying out of the handicap stalls 😡 And I’ve tried a few different brands that didn’t work for me either, so you might want to keep experimenting… it’s seriously a lifesaver!

I am seriously guilty of thinking about using a handicap spot when the parking lot is crazy crowded..but of course I never do because I am a good person! haha but the thought has crossed my mind multiple times! I also am a horrendous parker…even got a note on my car the other day asking if I was blindfolded when i parked. I wanted to reply to the note with #sorryboutit…but then i realized i had no where to return the note haha so operation be a beezy went out the window!

Are you accusing me of playing favorites? 😛 I definitely prefer talking about makeup over hair stuff, but I throw those in every once in a while too (I’m really loving the deep conditioner and treatment oil from MoroccanOil, and Lush shampoos/conditioners). I also wrote a post going over a bit of my haircare routine http://www.runningwithspoons.com/2012/09/06/healing-malnourished-hair/

my hubs was in a military as a construction worker, he drives heavy equipment & we own a huge boat so his favorite saying when viewing an amazingly bad parking job/driver “if you can’t drive it, don’t buy it” (said with a slow southern Hank Williams drawl) makes me laugh every time! the best is when it is a super small car like a mini cooper…..
living in Alaska we are almost upon 24 hours of daylight- right now its over 20 a day so I feel your pain on the daylight! room darkening shades & a slow fan are the only things that get me to sleep by 11pm- those 5am gym trips come super early!
my last beauty find was at Target- found some super cheap $3 mascara in some off brand that actually works! love your photos & good luck on the computer hunt- I am an ipad owner & I love me some apple products 🙂

I usually go to bed around midnight every night because I no longer have early wake-up calls. Plus, I barely get any sleep now-a-days, so if I went to bed at 9:30… I’d most likely wake up wide awake around 3 AM lol. You should get a little book shelf if you have any room in your apartment or donate some of your books! I know some places take books for $ towards books in their stores! I would love to be a MAC person, but I don’t have the money to join the club haha! And thanks for the dry shampoo tip! I have the same problem with limp and lifeless hair. Ooof!

There are bad parking jobs, and then there is that. Like wow – inconsiderate much? That brings about a bit of an eye twitch.

Annnnd I am a PC person. Always have been, always will be. Whenever I try to use a Mac, it just feels weird to me. Ipods and Iphones I can handle, but I need my beloved Windows for my computer.

And I’m starting to get the same book problem…I have both Eric’s and my books crammed onto my bookshelf, so I literally could not fit one more on there if I tried. In fact, I’m starting a small pile next to my bed…and on the coffee table…and my side table…it’s all sorts of attractive in my apartment. I’m trying to figure out what to do with them, because we definitely don’t have room for another bookshelf…maybe in the next apartment, though. And I kind of wanted to live in the Beauty and the Beast library when I was a kid.

I hope the yes to stuff works well, I’ve been happy with the yes to carrots hand cream I bought recently!

I loveeee using dry shampoo to add volume to my hair, my hair is really fine too and really susceptible to breaking :/ I wish I had big thick locks haha!
I haven’t made a beauty purchase in ages, but my concealer has just ran out so no doubt that will be next on the list 🙂

-I’ve been meaning to ask forever…what the heck is a “dry” coffee???

    • Amanda @ .running with spoons.

      June 6, 2013 at 10:11 am

Hehe I don’t think it applies to coffee in general, but to cappuccinos. A dry cappuccino is just one that has more foam and less milk. The usual ratio is something like 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foam, so asking for it dry is just reducing the steamed milk, thereby giving it a stronger coffee taste.

LOVE 30 SECONDS TO MARS!!! Definitely one of my favorite bands, and I’m kind of obsessed with their new album. Good tip on the dry shampoo too – my hair is also very fine, and though I can usually get it to have some oomph right after I blowdry it….it sorta falls flat as the day goes on. Definitely gonna try that trick! And AAAH you got the new Khaled Hosseini book! I’m forcing myself to wait until it comes out in paperback….

As far as dry shampoo, I’ve tried a number of them and I pretty happy with the one from Salon Grafix (I think this was my last beauty purchase too). It doesn’t leave any residue or make your hair grey!

I had to laugh at the car (well, not abou taking the handicap spot – rude), but I tend to do that actually because I’ve had SO many people hit my car because the parking spots are too darn close so sometimes I take up two. Oops.

In the winter i crawl into bed around 8, but now it’s still light out which makes me feel like i cant do that yet. however, it doesnt stay light til 9:30 on the east coast. it gets dark around 8:30ish. but we do get the sun streaming in the windows at like 4:30am, which, i kinda like. makes it easier to wake up 🙂
