like a kid in a candy store, banana science, and temptation bundling (ToL #166)

January 21, 2016 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 133 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. So I know my fellow foodies and health nuts will feel me on this one! Last week, Planet Organic (read: my long-time favourite place to buy groceries) opened the doors of it’s newest upgraded location, and I legit felt like a kid in a candy store as soon as I walked in. No, really… See? ?

Candy Stash

(they do sell things besides candy, btw ?)

We don’t have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s here in my neck of the woods, so PO has always been the place to go for organic foods and specialty products. The last building they were in had a cozy hole-in-the-wall feel to it, but it was tiny and didn’t have the room to stock a massive selection. This new one, though? Leeeeee-jit.

New Planet Organic

 2. That being said… we’re getting a Whole Foods in the fall of 2016 ? And while our Canadian Whole Foods’ don’t really compare to the American ones, it’ll still be nice to have a little more selection in the natural food department. I love seeing that market grow because it means that more people are getting serious about their health and taking an interest in what they put in their bodies… and that makes my health coaching heart all sorts of happy.

 3. And in case you’ve been wondering, here’s what I’ve been putting into my body lately…

Blueberry Muffin Tease

#comingsoon

4. I’m a creature of habit, and it’s super easy for me to fall into ruts grooves… especially with food. That’s why I don’t really mind when I run out of certain staple ingredients – it forces me to do something different. Case in point: I ran out of almond milk a little while back, which meant I couldn’t make my go-to almond milk latte. I settled for a regular coffee and remembered how much I adore the taste of really strong plain black coffee. Takeaway lesson: it’s good to switch things up every now and then (<– I need to write that on a Post-It and stick it everywhere).

Black Coffee

 5. That being said, I refuse to go without bananas. Re.fuse. I always have issues with getting bananas to ripen fast enough in the winter months, so I’ve taken precautionary measures and started stocking them in mass quantities…

Ripening Bananas

I’ve pretty much got it down to a science at this point, with each consecutive batch ripening at just the right time. I wasn’t kidding when I said I can’t live without [ripe] bananas…

6. In other non-food related shopping news, I finally picked up those falsies that I mentioned wanting to try a while back…

Ardell Lashes

Ardell lashes in 120 Demi Black

I heard these ones were pretty good beginner lashes, and they’re a nice inexpensive drugstore brand… which means it’s not a big deal if they take one for the team while I’m practicing. I’ll let you know how things go when I actually try them. Maybe this weekend.

7. In other, other non-food related shopping news… guess who finally got a glass straw!!

Glass Straw

I mostly wanted one of these because I think they look snazzy in smoothie pictures, buuuuut then I realized that most of my smoothies are the kind you eat with a spoon ?

8. I feel like I had something else to tell you, but I can’t remember what it is and I don’t feel like getting up to go get my notes ? Gimme a sec… OH! I started watching Gossip Girl again as a way to motivate myself to get my treadmill workouts in.

Gossip Girl Workout

I’ve had to take all my walks/runs inside lately on account of it being so cold outside, and while I’m thankful to still have a way to get those workouts in, I’m not going to act like the treadmill doesn’t suck the life-force out of me. SO! To combat boredom and keep myself from feeling [too much] like a hamster on a wheel, I decided to practice a little temptation bundling and re-watch one of my favourite shows of all time while getting my miles in on the ‘mill. It works. Time goes by in a flash, and I find myself actually looking forward to it. Plus, it’s been so long since I last watched GG, that it basically feels like watching it for the first time.

9. And I’m not sure when I started ending things on a 9 instead of 10, but it doesn’t seem like a bad place to stop. Hope you guys are having an awesome Thursday, and I’ll see your friendly faces tomorrow!

Congrats on the new store digs….and also on the Whole Foods opening up! I lived RIGHT across the street from both a WHole Foods and Trader Joes, and now I don’t think I have either within 30 minutes of me. I don’t mind though, I have my Sprouts market, which has always been my favorite anyway. Their produce selection is AMAZING.

Funny story about those Surf Sweet Jelly beans…I can’t eat corn syrup, so when I had to do my glucose test when I was pregnant I ate those jelly beans…and then when I failed the 1 hour test and had to take the 3 hour test I had to eat 103 of those jelly beans in 5 minutes…not a task you want to do…I haven’t eaten them since…But I do like the sour gummy bears and worms, yum!

Ah yes, stocking up on bananas. I consider myself a pro at it here in collegeβ€” take enough back to my dorm to let them ripen, bring the ripe ones to the dhall to eat, and take some more pale yellow ones to undergo the process. #crazylady
It’s both good and bad that we are forced to walk outside in the Arctic tundra to go to classes, but mostly good, because I don’t think any TV show could make me go on a treadmill every day…

Avocados with your bananas! Have you ever tried storing avocados with/near your bananas? In a paper bag? It speeds up the ripening process like magic (so for me – I keep them away from each other to keep them bananas unripe. mmm) Is Planet Organic just a west thing? Never seen it over here in Toronto.

I can’t go without bananas either, but that’s because my calves cramp. Like, charlie horse will wake me up at 2am cramp, and then I’ll feel it for days. I eat my bananas too fast to use in recipes, but if I do have some leftover, I turn to the trusty banana bread or banana nut muffins recipe.

It was terrible though because I’d spend the entire day grocery shopping and going to each store for good finds and the best prices. That’s really where my hobby was born!

Buying bananas for one can be hard because there’s some serious thought that goes into getting them to ripen at the right rate. At the grocery store, I sometimes look like banana choice is a serious life decision for me. ? Fortunately, I usually don’t mind (okay, actually prefer) having lots of bananas, and the extras can go toward baking! And I’m a total kid in the candy store at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and pretty much any big grocery store. So much to see! So many foods to try!

I’ve told my husband we can’t live in a town without Whole Paycheck & TJs (although I shop most at Freshmarket!).

We are completely out of bananas at the moment. πŸ™ Because I just didn’t want to go out of the house the last 3 days — other than to get the mail, take out the trash, and finally yesterday it was warm enough for a short dog walk — poor Lola shivered through it with a sweater & a coat on!

Oh man. You should have seen me the first time I walked into a Whole Foods in the States. I’m pretty sure my jaw dropped.

Ha ha! Running on the treadmill can be pretty boring can’t it? But, like you the weather here is too cold to get out running. Plus I don’t fancy running in the dark at 6.30 in the morning.

I’ve got a sad compilation of dance and rave tracks (showing my age lol) on my ipod. So I don’t have that, as you say “feeling like a hamster on a wheel” feeling either! πŸ™‚

I love dance music! I actually need to update my playlist again, and I think I have to go back and put a lot of older songs on it that I used to love in the 90’s. They just don’t make music like they used to anymore πŸ˜‰

Nine is not a bad place to stop? Don’t tell a girl who can’t handle uneven numbers ;).
Also, I hear you on feeling like a child in a candy store in new or simply bigger organic food stores. Ours is teensy-tiny which makes me go overboard very time I’m in a larger city. Temptation bundling the bad way: all the tempting goods in one place. Can you hear the purses crying?!
Have tried letting your unripe bananas spend a night on the radiator? I recently “forgot” mine there and wasn’t mad about the result at all.

I actually don’t have a radiator πŸ˜• And I’d let them sit on the hot air vents except those things are up near the ceiling in my place (I know, right?!?). Maybe I should let them hang out by the fireplace…
