. thinking out loud #106 .

November 27, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 56 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Firstly and foremostly….

Happy-Thanksgiving

… aaaaaaand Happy Thursday to everyone else! I think I speak for all of us non-Americans when I say that we will gladly be your answer to the question of “what to do with all those pesky leftovers?” I myself am particularly fond of mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and any [peanut-free] dessert that isn’t pumpkin pie. No offence — it’s a texture thing.

2. I will say that the holiday mentality is super contagious, though. It’s business as usual for us up here in Canadaland, but I’m draaaaaaaaagging like crazy– and I completely blame the blog world for that one. It’s just hard to feel productive and motivated to get work done when you’re constantly reading about people enjoying holiday festivities. Pft. I’m not bitter. Totally not bitter.

3. At least the Black Friday sales have made their way up here! Which I say with 100% sarcasm since I can’t even remember the last time I’ve shopped the sales on either Black Friday or Boxing Day (Canada’s equivalent). I know people get a big thrill from scoring a good deal, but the crowds and the craziness are a little too much for me and I end up wanting to run for cover before I’ve even managed to find a parking spot. That being said, I wouldn’t mind getting my Christmas shopping started a little earlier this year, since I usually wait ‘until the last minute and end up running around like a madwoman trying to get everything together in time. Confession: I kind of like it.

Shopping Success

4. Oh! And while we’re on the topic of Black Friday, I wanted to let you guys know about the awesome sale that Bluehost* has going on this weekend! From today until Sunday night at 11:59 PST, you can sign up for web hosting for as low as $3.95 per month — so if you’re thinking about starting a blog or switching over to self-hosting, then now is definitely a good time to do it! And if you’ve been going back and forth on the idea, you can check out this post to see why I recommend it or head over to Bluehost* to learn more.

5. As for me, I’ll be decking the halls this weekend! #happydance

Christmas Garland

I know it’s not technically December 1st yet, but it’s close enough! And I always like to get my decorating done on the weekends because it means I can have family/friends over and really take the time to go all out. You know what I’m talking about — Christmas music, freshly baked cookies, fuzzy socks, a holiday movie or two — the whole shebang.

6. Speaking of Christmas movies, you guys convinced me that I need to get my act together and watch Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, so I’ll be adding both to my holiday movie list this year. Now to find some copies…

7. Maybe I can watch them while writing my Christmas cards. For some reason that I can’t recall, I didn’t end up sending out Christmas cards last year and I haaaaaaaaated it! I mean, sure it’s way easier to send someone a text or e-mail and wish them a Merry Christmas that way, but there’s something so much more special about receiving an actual card in the mail… so I’m planning on getting that done this weekend and hopefully beating the massive influx of letters to Santa 😉

Christmas Cards

8. I’d also love to do some Christmas crafts this year, but I have no idea what to make… Any suggestions? I made a gingerbread-less gingerbread house last year (read: it was made out of foamy stuff), but I’d actually like to do something more crafty crafty this year. Wreaths? Garlands? Ornaments? I’m kind of afraid to look on Pinterest because then I just end up getting way too overwhelmed 😆

Gingerless Gingerbread

9. I could have sworn that I had something else to tell you guys, but it’s escaping me at the moment so I’m going to end things here by wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and/or a wonderful Thursday! I’ll be taking tomorrow off to catch up on some work projects, but I’ll see you on Sunday with some Link Love!

    Okay so I haven’t watched Marry Poppins or SOund of Music in full either… I have no interest in those movies. Does that make me a bad person? {insert monkey covering eyes emoji}

Happy Friday and have fun decorating!! Christmas always makes homes look so pretty! 🙂

Whenever I think about doing something crafty, I remember that I’m really, really horrible at anything even remotely creative. I can barely draw a stick figure, and I was working on knitting the same scarf for like 2 years before I finally gave up (its like 8 inches long) (that’s what she said). So noooo creative Christmas-y things for me.

Also, I got up at 1 pm today. And I’m just making breakfast now at 3 pm. Yay shift work!

I couldn’t agree more with you about black Friday shopping! I can’t stand those crowds and how people care so much about these material things to fight over them! I am staying in tonight and getting a good nights sleep because that is way more important in my book!

You should make Christmas ornaments. You can even give them as gifts and keep one for your own tree. I’m hoping to do a little holiday decorating myself this weekend. Those outdoor lights still need hanging and my cards need a writing.

Thanksgiving is overrated. Says the vegetarian who is happily forced to eat all the mashed potatoes and bread. 🙂

Yes!! I cannot wait to decorate for the holidays this weekend as well! Cue the Christmas music, eggnog, falling snow and roaring fire, I am ready.

I normally send out Christmas cards but this year I did not get my act together and design/order some. I’m thinking about going the e-card route which definitely does not result in the same amount of joy as getting a card in the mail.

I would make or decorate little gift bags or boxes. Then, bake up some goodies to give to friends, family, and your favorite barista 😉 Can I just say how I salute you for dealing with Black Friday craziness? Oh, hell to the no for me. haha! I cannot deal with crowds and angry people. My anxiety doesn’t like it so much. LOL. I’m really trying to get my gifts done this year before it’s the week before Christmas, buuuuuutttt I work better under pressure. (I just keep telling myself that but really I just procrastinate everything. shhhh)

Going late night shopping this evening and you reminded me that I need to pick up some Christmas cards! Thanks for that!
I hear you on number 2 – it’s not much fun reading about a holiday everyone in the blogosphere seems to be celebrating apart from us! But I love the idea of taking the message from the day and still being thankful. But also secretly wish I could watch the parade!
Woop woop for Christmas decorating and the eventual Mary Poppins watching. You will love it!

Ooooh I went Black Friday shopping once a couple of years ago. Never. Again. O.O

Also, most of my Christmas shopping has been done already… Generally, I am a last-minute procrastinator, but I became entangled in the holiday spirit a little earlier this year. And I had a good budget all ready and rearing to be spent. Wal-Mart sales for the win. 😉

I always feel a bit jealous on American Thanksgiving too. I say next year I should host a Canadian blogger American Thanksgiving at my place. 😉

How many GB does a website use on average? I’m debating between the starter and the plus plan on Bluehost 🙂

Well, all packages have unlimited bandwidth, so unless you’re uploading tonnes of video and music files, then the 100GB of storage offered by the starter is more than enough.

I introduced my husband to The Sound of Music a few months ago, and it might have been one of the most magical experiences ever. He became obsessed with “The Lonely Goatherd” and was totally enthralled by the whole thing. It was pretty awesome, not gonna lie! I have made gingerbread houses on several occasions, but I really just want to eat them. It’s like the ultimate temptation of how long can you leave it out before you actually just have to eat it.

Even though I try to make it a habit not to shop on black Friday, it’s hard not to get caught up in all the “excitement” over the “deals” (which for me just means buying things I don’t need to buy and wouldn’t have.) It’s tough to stick to just the stuff you would have gotten anyway and keep a logical mind!

I’m sure whatever you decide to do craft wise will be awesome!
