. snowboarding the weekend away .

March 25, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 75 Comments

Hi friends!

Is it really Monday? I could have sworn it was just Friday and I was busy packing for a snowboarding trip to the mountains; or, more specifically, to Marmot Basin in Jasper. This weekend went by way too quickly if you ask me, but at least I get to do a little reminiscing thanks to the lovely Katie and MIMM…

MiMM

I’m going to have to reminisce in point form, though. I’m writing this on Sunday night after spending half of the day on the slopes and the other half in the car – my brain can only focus on one thing right now…

Comfy Hotel Bed

Namely, how comfy my hotel bed was; and how much I enjoyed sleeping snacking in it…

Apple Chips

Barefruit Cinnamon Apple Chips. Holy wow do I love these things.

But there I go getting distracted already. Focus, Amanda. Focus. Okay. Mountains. They were beautiful…

Rocky Mountains

Beautiful Mountains
Sun on the Slopes

Rockies

And fun as heck….

Spy Goggles
Tall Glass Tea

Funny story. I brought a few baggies of my favorite tea along with me, but the mugs that were in the hotel room were WAY too small. I mean, who can be satisfied with just two or three sips of tea?! Solution? Brew tea in a tall drinking glass

Boarding Prep

Closed Skiing Area

Very tempted to do a little backcountry, but no snow gear = no go.

View From the Top

Cloudy Mountain Top

The upper half of the mountain was a little cloudy on day 1.

Avalanche Warning

What's This Do?

What the heck does this strap do?!

In the Cafeteria

And can I just say that these may have been the best fries I’ve ever eaten?

Cafeteria Fries

Was there anything special about them? Defnitely not – they were just your typical, holy-crap-are-these-ever-greasy cafeteria style fries. But you wouldn’t believe the kind of appetite you work up after a day on the slopes, and getting smacked in the face by the tantalizing smell of ketchup and fries as soon as you walk into the lounge makes you completely forget about the sandwiches you packed. Such is life. I figure that there are far worse things that one can eat, like plastic fruit…

Bitten Plastic Pear

… which, judging from those bite marks, is what someone who had stayed in the room before us apparently tried to do 😆 Happy Monday, friends! Make it a good one.

. – . – . – .

Have you ever been snowboarding?
Do you sleep well in hotel beds?
What was the best meal/moment of your weekend?

It looks like you had such a great time! The mountain pictures really are beauiful! I only sleep well in hotel beds if I have had a busy day! I have never been snowboarding, but I have been skiing! Snowboarding looks so intimidating! 🙂

I have never been skiing or snowboarding! I also don’t sleep well in hotel beds. I spent the weekend with my cousins who were visiting FL (but the other side of the state), so I slept on a couch all weekend. I am extra exhausted today, so much so that I want to go to bed right now..and it’s only 6 pm.

I’ve never been snowboarding, although I’ve always wanted to be brave enough to learn. I used to ski (dry slopes) when I was younger, but I was very tentative, reticent and fearful…which ironically meant I used to fall a ridiculous amount. I wasn’t very good at it and I was too scared to ever try on snow, which is something I really regret. I couldn’t get past parallel turns, so I thought I’d probably ski into a tree. Snowboarding is so much cooler anyway – you look great!

Hotel beds? No chance of me sleeping in those. Or any other bed for that matter!

I had a decent enough race at the week-end. It was pretty damn cold, but absolutely nothing compared to the temperatures you were snowboarding in!

If it’s any consolation, I can’t ski to save my life. I have a fear of both my legs going opposite directions and tearing me in half 😆

Ahhh so gorgeous!!! And so fun I bet! I’ve always wanted to learn how to snowboard, but Im really not sure that my old lady knees could take it. I feel in some potholes on the field on sunday in my game and my knees are WRECKED today. Hurts every time I move almost 🙁 So I guess I will just live my snowboarding dreams through you 🙂

I’ve never been to Jasper. WTH. Also, I am a cheese string biter. I don’t have the time for BS cheese-peeling. Plus, the hygiene aspect grosses me out – fingernails digging into it with each pull? BLEH. I’m going to stop now.
The best thing I ate this weekend was Reeses PB cup cheesecake, along with a Turkish inspired 3 course dinner. We had baklava and vanilla lavender Turkish delights with it! So, so good.

You took some great shots of the Alberta mountains! Because I live right next to them I sometimes take their beauty for granted.

I’ve seen apple chips at the grocery store but am apprehensive about buying them because I’m not fond of dried apples. They’re far too spongy for my tastes; are the apple chips like that, or are they crisp like real chips?

I start taking my surroundings for granted too. We have a really beautiful river valley here in Edmonton that I don’t appreciate nearly enough. Which part of AB do you live in, if you don’t mind me asking?

As for the chips, I definitely recommend giving them a try! I share those same exact sentiments regarding dried apples, but these apple chips are crispy like real chips. No sponginess to speak of.

I’m from Calgary. I see the mountains almost every day, they’re so close. I never fully appreciated Canada’s nature and wildlife until I moved to the UK. Now whenever I’m here I make sure to make the most of my beautiful surroundings, which gives me a wonderful reason to visit Banff more often!

I’m so relieved they aren’t spongy. I’ll be sure to pick some up next time I food shop.

So glad you had a wonderful weekend, Amanda! The mountains in Jasper are GORGEOUS…and so is that comfy-looking bed. 😉 As you know, I LOVE sleeping in hotels; I haven’t been able to pinpoint just what makes it so different from home, though. Maybe the fact that there’s usually a zillion fluffy pillows on the bed? Or the blackout curtains? Or the fact that the room is meticulously clean? Whatever the reason, I always sleep like a baby. 🙂

Those FRIES! Enter: major craving. I completely agree with you that food always tastes better after a day spent on the slopes–especially warm, greasy food. With ketchup, of course. Yum.

    Happy Monday! xoxo

Oh girl, I DO believe how tasty these fries must have been. Snowboarding – or, as you know, in my case: skiing – makes you work up quite the appetite. My favourite part of these meals during ski holidays, though, might have just been the amazing drink: Lemonade “avec sirop de la fraise”. Mmmmh! Haven’t had it in years but I can’t imagine it tasting as good on a normal day as compared to a skiing break.
But come on, admit it was you biting into the plastic pear! Kidding ;).

I’d love to go snowboarding again…although it’s been over a decade, so I’m assuming any skills I picked up when I was a kid are probably long gone!

Gosh these pics of the slopes from your weekend are stunning! Believe it or not, I have never seen snow to that extent- I can only imagine how breath-taking it is in real life, even if it means bundling up like mad! Ski weekends are my absolute favorite. There’s something about the hotel beds, the greasy fries (and hot chocolate), and the views from the top of the mountain that just make it all worth it and perfect. I only got one weekend like that in this year and it was the first in way too long. You’re making me miss the weekly ski vacations my family used to take!! I totally used to hate eating a bagged lunch the minute we hit the cafeteria on the mountain and would beg my parents to let me buy lunch. Usually they only let me have a little “treat” though. As much as I like skiing, I’m ready for summer.
