. recipe nutritional info .

March 22, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 89 Comments

So apparently biting cheese strings is a heinous offense. My apologies to all the peelers ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cheese String Bite

But guess who got the last laugh?ย Winter, with 30 cm of snow yesterday…ย

Snowfall Warning

Womp, womp. Hopefully this is the last of it, but I guess the extra snow will come in handy when I go snowboarding this weekend? Although driving conditions aren’t exactly the greatest right now… Over 300 people were injured yesterday after a huge pile-up on the highway. Pray for me? And while you’re at it, add Jo in there as well… Us two girls have it pretty rough up here in Alberta. Speaking of which, any other Albertan readers/bloggers out there? Please don’t hesitate to chime in every now and again! Sometimes I feel like I live in an isolated blogger no-man’s land with no one anywhere near me… It gets lonely ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Oh, and for those of you were were surprised: yes, I am indeed a snowboarder. I’ve been doing it for something like 15 or 16 years now, although I haven’t been able to get out as much as I would have liked for the past couple of years. The older I get, the less willing I become to deal with the cold and the more time I spend “exercising” at the mall instead…

Shopping Bags

I had some time to kill last night, and while I was planning on just going in to walk around without buying anything, my plans changed as soon as I walked by Sephora… and then again when I walked by MAC.

Love For Rent
Beauty Goodies

Sweater from F21 – Clarisonic brush heads, Urban Decay makeup setting spray, MAC 150 powder brushย

What can I say? I’m a beauty junkie, and Sephora’s siren song is just too sweet to ignore. In my defense, my Clarisonic was in dire need of a brush head replacement, and… well… I have no excuse for my other purchases, but I think I deserve them after fighting my way throughย this…

Crazy Snow

You know the snow situation is getting a little extreme when you manage to get snow down your knee.high.boots on the walk home.ย Brr.

So this post has been all over the place and I apologize for that, but nasty weather means tiredness, tiredness means a few too many cups of coffee being consumed, and a few too many cups of coffee being consumed means that my mind is going a mile a minute and my fingers are doing their best to keep up.ย Thereย is actually something concrete that I wanted to talk to you guys about, though…

Water Label

Nutrition labels. I recently started usingย Recipage, and while I was in the process of transferring my recipes over I started wondering if I should include the nutritional information on them or not. Even though I don’t count calories or track macros, I know that a lot of people do; and I have to admit that even I’m more attracted to recipes that include nutritional info because I like to at least have a general idea of what I’m eating.

So what do you guys think? Yay or nay to adding nutritional info to my recipes? Are you more attracted to recipes that have them? Pros? Cons? As always, I’d love to hear what you guys think!

I am trying to listen to my body and eat when I’m hungry… don’t when I’m not, so I don’t really care about nutritionals. Ask me a year ago, and I would have wanted the breakdown!

    A few things:

    1) I don’t peel string cheese! I just eat it. It was fun to make the characters as a kid, but now it’s just like… I want cheese in my stomach right now, please.

    2) Alberta reader here as you probably know because I seem to mention it every time I comment. I’m in Calgary, though. I heard about the huge pile-up and was so surprised. It snowed here yesterday, but stopped by 3 or 4, and it’s almost all melted now. If you are journeying to the mountains drive safe! I heard the QE2 between Red Deer and Edmonton is closed, but that was last night so hopefully it’s cleared by now.

    3) I say no to the nutritional facts. Please ๐Ÿ™‚ If you do decide to put them in maybe add a separate link so it’s not smacking you in the face if you don’t want to know/ don’t care.

Melted?! Ohhh lucky! We’ve still got 3 ft. high snow banks here! Hopefully it’ll clear up by next week though. And thankfully I won’t be taking the QE2. I’m headed to Jasper so I get to avoid that death trap section of road.

I was always really pro nutrition labels until I realized how obsessed I had become. Now I prefer to understand the ingredients and not have nutrition label. I only look at calories and now that I’ve learned that calories are not the most important thing I really prefer being able to eat things and not looking at the calorie count. So I say having the ingredients is all you need! No need to label with numbers when we can see what exactly is inside ๐Ÿ™‚

You say you feel better with nutritional stats for recipes so you “know exactly what you are eating”, but if it is a recipe you have a list of all the ingredients used… so you know what you are eating. You might not know how many calories or grams of fat, but is that really needed? For some people, who are trying to lose weight for health reasons, then knowing the calories, fat, carbs, whatever may be important, but for someone healthy it just seems a little controlling, but that’s just my perspective. If they are all ingredients that make me feel good, healthy, and ones you enjoy, I don’t see the point of having the nutritional facts… I wouldn’t want to start deciding what I eat from nutrition stats necessarily, that just seems like so much focus on food

Those are all really great points, and pretty much exactly why I’ve avoided calculating stats to this point. I’m just throwing the idea out there to get different opinions ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve never experienced snow so its kind of a dream to visit a snowy place! Snowy pics always seem magical to me :p .
Regarding nutritional info I’m one of those who would love to know exactly how much calories is entering my mouth (really trying to shake off that obsession). I find that making recipes that do not list calories is proving to be really freeing for me…which is why I have started to turn to your site repeatedly. I’ve got plans to whip up your blueberry muffins tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

boo sorry for that snow but i hope it works in your favor once you SAFELY make it to your destination. drive carefully please! wouldn’t like my google reader sans running with spoons, ya hear? as far as nutritional stats go i can see both sides of the debate. i honestly think that i like recipes that have them because i like to have a general idea as well but to be honest, i pretty much know based on the ingredients what the rough nutrition stats are. it’s not as if i can pretend that the nutrition facts on pound cake are going to be stellar, but i’m still going to eat it anyway. for those people that do want to carefully track their macros, i’m sure they have tools at their disposal to calculate that stuff so don’t put yourself out too much! i just like when blogs have recipes easily organized and accessible – i can calculate the stats if i want ’em!

Shopping is one of my favourite kinds of exercise – if only it was more affordable ๐Ÿ˜‰ …
So cool you’ve been snowboarding for a long time already. Admittedly, snowboarding scares me a tad as I’ve only been skiing before and can’t imagine having both of my feet tied to a board. I’d be afraid of not being able to move as free as on two skis and not have full control. Does that sound weird? Anyway, I hope you have lots of fun this weekend – for once appreaciating lots of snow, right :D? Sorry you’re having too much in general, too, though.

I love Forever 21. You can get so much for so little so no complaints there. As for the calorie info, I don’t really count my calories either so it doesn’t matter. I love knowing the stats of course but it isn’t necessary.

I don’t really care too much about nutritional info – I’m happier not knowing my calories or my macros so I don’t think about it. If there’s something that I’m really curious about it, I’ll log onto myfitnesspal.com and calculate it myself. Although I do understand that a lot of people like to know that sort of thing. I am crying about the little snow which won’t stop falling here in Germany, but you in Alberta have like 5 times as many – so I guess I should stop being so over-sensitive and start being happy instead ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

Regarding the nutrition labels: I don’t see the harm they could do, so, why not? If you don’t mind spending the extra time – I do, and I do not care how much calories my meals have. Mostly I do use healthy ingredients and I also have an eye on portion-sizing. But to my opinion everybody needs a different amount of food and I don’t like measuring everything out anyways – that’s why I end up following recipes loosely, anyways.

And I don’t know how I feel about the nutritional information either. While it’s always kind of nice to have the knowledge, it also tends to put a lot of focus on that. Hmm…I would say just do whatever makes you more comfortable. Listen to your gut!

I think it’s okay to add nutritional information. It’s a good thing to know and keep track of regardless of whether you have/had disordered eating problems just so you know what you’re getting when you’re eating something. I think the worst part of reading nutritional labels is what you DO with the information. It’s all about perception, not the labels themselves. I went through a phase where I was eating no fat (dumb.) so if I picked up ANYTHING and saw 1g of fat, I’d put it down. Now, I could care less. It’s the label, it’s just the way the person thinks about each macro; otherwise, it’s good to know what you’re getting.. These days I look mostly at protein amounts and whether or not there are any funky ingredients!

I know personally, I like to figure out the calories for stuff I bake… but that’s just cause I’m kinda OCD with that sort of stuff haha but with recipes online I don’t really have a preference… because everyone uses different stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

It sounds like you are leaning toward that way — and I don’t think it is “troubling” for your audience if that would be a concern.

However — it IS extra work and I, for one, am no less fond or attracted to recipes without the math done for me and I am sure I am not alone.

    Oh and really the only type of string cheese that is “stringable” is mozzarella — all the other kinds? Biting is necessary. Right? You cant “string” a stick of colby jack it just cracks and gets in your fingernails. So what I am saying is you are only 50% of an offender. (0;
