90% of my days begin with oatmeal and coffee. And when I say 90%, I really mean closer to 100… I just don’t want you guys to judge me for my lame breakfast habits.
But I can’t help it! I tend to fall into breakfast
ruts grooves, and this one just so happened to last for the past 6 years. Or has it been 7? Or 8? Either way… I’m in a long committed relationship with coffee and oatmeal. And I’m pretty okay with it.
I think the reason I haven’t gotten bored yet is because I’m constantly switching up what I do with it. Like, one day it’ll be some sort of banana, chocolate, and almond butter concoction, and the next it’ll be blueberry, flax, and maple. Oatmeal’s just good like that. You can have it hot or cold. Sweet or savoury. Thick or soupy. Or in smoothie form…
A mocha overnight oatmeal smoothie, in this case.
It’s been a while since I posted an oatmeal smoothie, eh? I did the avocado thing for a while (which I still love), but oats will always have a top spot on my list of favourite smoothie ingredients because of the amazing things they do to the texture. Like… I know comforting isn’t really a word you’d associate with smoothies, but that’s exactly what this guy is. Comforting. Hearty. Stick-to-your-ribs-y. And just straight up delicious… especially if you go the dessert for breakfast route and doctor it up with some [coconut] whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
And he’s so much more than a pretty face! Because behind that mouthwatering exterior is a smoothie that’s chockfull of fibre, healthy fats, plant-based protein, and a touch of caffeine… meaning it’ll keep you satisfied all morning long while giving you a nice little boost of energy so you can get your day started on the right foot. And if you don’t like the taste of coffee or you’re sensitive to caffeine? Just leave it out, add a touch more cocoa, and enjoy an equally delicious chocolate oat smoothie.
Either way! This guy’s gluten-free and vegan, and you can easily make it nut-free by subbing the nut butter for a soy nut butter, and the almond milk for another non-dairy alternative like soy or rice. I like to use an instant espresso powder* for the coffee bit, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand. The only thing I recommend is to let it sit overnight. You technically could throw everything together in the morning and be good to go, but letting the oats soak overnight is what gives this smoothie the thick and creamy texture of melted ice cream, and who doesn’t love that?

Mocha Overnight Oatmeal Smoothie
- Total Time: 3 hours 5 mins
- Yield: 1 serving 1x
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1/2 cup (40 g) rolled oats (gluten-free, if needed)**
- 1 tbsp (5 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp (16 g) almond butter***
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) maple syrup
- 1 tsp instant coffee
- (optional): a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder
- The night before, add all the ingredients to the bowl of your blender and give them a stir to ensure that everything is well combined. Cover and place in the fridge for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight.
- The next morning, blend on high until a smooth and creamy consistency is reached, adding more milk if the smoothie is too thick. Transfer back to a bowl or glass, add desired toppings, and enjoy!
* Cook time refers to chilling time. ** If using protein powder, reduce the oats to 1/3 cup. *** I used almond because it has a sweet and mild taste. Feel free to use your favourite nut/seed butter.

The choice for connoisseurs of aesthetics and comfort is sometimes obvious, the question is the readiness of the user to solid quality. The habit of using standing things becomes a non-commemorable choice and raises taste.
Loving the recipes. If you’d be interested in working with us (www.iconnutrition.com) we’d be happy to provide some of our best whey protein for you to try. Our Cinnamon Vanilla Swirl flavour would be great in some of these. Drop me an email if you’d be interested 🙂
play gin rummy
I really used to play gin rummy while cooking such dishes in my free time with my friends.
This looks incredible! Yum!
Yummy! Made it this morning, ran out of almond butter s I used peanut and it tasted like a Reese’s peanut butter cup!!!
Oatmeal is amazing!! And I guess a smoothie would be perfect during fall, worth giving it a try!
Your breakfast is not even remotely lame!
I’ve been doing the avocado A LOT too, so thanks for this great recipe – just what I need as the avo season is about to end!
This speaks to my coffee loving heart. Also I need to get back on the oatmeal train. I fell off some time ago and I’m missing it now.

Omgosh this looks amazing. Oatmeal in smoothies is the best. Oatmeal in general is the best. I mean, mocha? That whipped cream + chocolate shavings…I die. Pinning for later (and by later, I mean ASAP)!
I LOVE oatmeal smoothies!! I make your snickerdoodle one so much throughout the week, and I can’t wait to add this to my breakfast routine.
