healthy chocolate mousse smoothie

April 8, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 112 Comments

Thick, creamy, and loaded with chocolate flavour, this vegan chocolate mousse smoothie is so decadent, you’d never believe it’s healthy!

Chocolate Mousse Smoothie -- thick, creamy, and loaded with chocolate flavour. So decadent, you'd never believe it's healthy! || runningwithspoons.com

Everyone knows that you shouldn’t read food blogs on an empty stomach — not unless you’re masochistic, anyway. All that delicious food staring back at you from your computer screen, just begging to be made and enjoyed… It’s torture!

The same goes for food photography. I will never (ever, ever, ever) pick up my camera for a shoot unless I’m properly fed… and even that’s not a guarantee that I won’t try to eat my subject(s) anyways. But can you blame me when I’m working with things like this?

Ugh. You guyssssss. This smoothie… I’m having a hard time trying to talk about it and keep things PG. I just want to make all sorts of inappropriate noises, which will do nothing to entice you to make it and probably only scare you away. But I can’t help it! You know those things that render you completely speechless? And all you can do is moan, groan, and try to express yourself by making odd gestures with your hands? This is one of those things for me! Luscious, thick, creamy, whipped, chocolatey goodness… And all you need is 5 minutes, a few ingredients, and a blender…

I can’t. I just can’t. I mean, look at the creaminess!

It’s the avocado… and the chia. You can’t taste them at all, but they do incredible things for the texture. And to make things even better, they also add a nice little boost of healthy fats,  fibre, protein, omega 3s, and calcium. Not bad for something that tastes like decadent chocolate mousse! So if you’ve never tried adding these gems to your smoothies, you need to stop what you’re doing and go change that. I mean, don’t stop what you’re doing yet — keep reading until you reach the recipe — and then stop what you’re doing and go make it. I promise you won’t be disappointed…

LOVE this. I’d probably use my latest obsession- cacao powder. It’s been in my oatmeal every morning lately.

This looks so good. Once upon a time I tried making a sweet smoothie like this, but I failed. So now I stick to the green stuff and the fruity stuff. Maybe I should try again because wow this looks like a chocolate shake! Is it sweet? I guess the bananas give it the sweet factor?

It’s definitely sweet! The banana does most of the work, but protein powder helps if you add that in as well. If you don’t, then you can just add a little bit of honey.

YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM. I was going to say, “feel free to make all the non-PG noises about this as you want!”, but realized it sounded a bit off o.o.

But… chocolate… coffee.. avocado…. WHY ISN’T THIS IN FRONT OF ME RIGHT NOW. Life isn’t fair :(.

    You’ve done it again, lady!

I use chia in every smoothie I make- they just aren’t the same without it!: ) Avocado is nice when I can afford them, but I always tend to forget about them, or suddenly not want to use them once they’re here so I rarely buy them. They do make a great smoothie though! I also like using a tablespoon of coconut flour to get that same consistency. It’s a bit like cake batter in a smoothie<3

I love using coconut flour in smoothies too, but it definitely ends up a little more cakey than moussey… Which, let’s be honest, is still freaking amazing 😀

“And all you can do is moan, groan, and try to express yourself by making odd gestures with your hands?” <— YES! I always do that whenever I eat something particularly awesome…it's probably awkward for witnesses.

I've been seeing the avocado-in-smoothies thing popping up lately…I think I need to test that out? Anything chocolate mousse-y makes me happy.

And yes, now I'm hungry. Off to search out a morning snack…

Nooooo. Instant coffee dissolves completely whereas normal ground coffee… doesn’t. You’ll end up with gritty grounds in your smoothie, which isn’t a good look for anyone…

I really need to start chewing gum when I bake, because there is WAY too much tasting that occurs and then I am too full/sick to eat the final product. I of course DO STILL eat the final product, resulting in feeling MORE sick. I just can’t win…or control myself. This smoothie looks divine!

The blender makes my cat run like a bat out of hell, which is actually kinda fun. I love avo-cocoa mousses. I made a really fantastic one last summer, and meant to keep making them, but I always went back to my ice cream, lol.

Good call about not reading blogs on an empty stomach. But you should probably extend the warning to not reading when you’re at the office with limited food choices around. Then again: who reads blogs at the office in anyway, right ;)?
Just to let you know -how- amazing your pictures are: they might even make me [read: the non-smoothie fan] wish I had a glass of this sitting next to me. And with that name? Catchy.

These pictures belong in a magazine! Seriously gorgeous. I made chocolate pudding with avocados a couple months ago and while I love both pudding and avocados, I didn’t love that I could taste the avocados in the pudding itself. Did you feel like you could taste them in this smoothie or were there enough other flavors that stood out instead? I may have needed to add more dates as sweeteners for mine to have worked 🙂
