. cookie dough .

May 12, 2011 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 62 Comments

Hullo beautiful friends! I hope you’re having an awesome day πŸ˜€

Aside from almost being blown away by the wind, my day was nothing to complain about. But this wind has seriously got to stop. Not only can I not do anything outside without my hair whipping me in the face, but I keep getting woken up in the middle of the night by random crashes and howling wind. Bah!Β But enough about wind; I have a confession…

I. don’t. like. raw. cookie. dough.

Don’t hate me. Baked cookies? Please; by the dozens preferably. But raw cookie dough? Erm… no. I think it was the whole raw egg thing that initially threw me off, but even after I started making vegan cookies and no longer had to worry about succumbing to salmonella, eating the dough before it had time to beautify in the oven never appealed to me. Spoons I can lick, but that’s about as far as it goes. There’s just nothing better than a warm, ooey-gooey cookie in my books…

Unless it’s TWO warm, ooey-gooey cookies, of course.

But I digress. The point is, me and cookie dough aren’t exactly chummy. But, for this batch, I can make an exception… Nevermind that it’s not technicallyΒ cookie dough; it’s good, and that’s what counts πŸ˜€

. – . – . – .

. chocolate chip cookie dough protein balls .

IngredientsΒ (makes 4 balls)

  • ΒΌ cup raw, unsalted almonds
  • 3 large Medjool dates
  • 2 Tbsp. rolled oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I use whey)
  • 1 Tbsp. mini chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Throw almonds into a food processor/blender (I use the Magic Bullet short cup) and process until you reach the consistency of a medium-grain meal.

2. Add dates, and process until fully combined. This may take some patience and fiddling.

3. Add oats and protein powder, and process until fully combined.

4. Transfer dough to a small bowl, and add in chocolate chips. It will be a little crumbly at first, but work it with your hands until everything sticks together. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into balls.

5. Eat and enjoy! Store any unused balls in a tightly closed container in the fridge.

. – . – . – .

I know there are a tonne of ball recipes floating around out there on the web, but I’ve been completely obsessed with this combination for quite some time now. I love having them as a pre-workout snack, or any time I really need to silence a nagging sweet tooth [read: uhm… all the time?].

I’ve made them without protein powder before, and they were definitely still good, but I’ve found that the addition of the powder improves the texture a lot – it makes them slightly more doughy while adding a subtle hint of flavor. Mrow. Now I’m really craving one…

I hope you enjoy, and I’d love it if you let me know if you tried them πŸ˜€

Have a gorgeous night!

. – . – . – .

Baked cookies or cookie dough?Β Baked cookies, hands down.

Have you ever had food poisoning?Β Thankfully, no; at least not bad enough to have noticed. It’s actually something I’m really scared of… I have this BIG fear of throwing up, so I probably wouldn’t handle it very well.

This may gross you out, but I used to eat raw cookie dough by the log! My friends and I would go to the store, get the biggest logs we could find, and snack on it through the day. Ugh, looking back on it that was ridiculously fattening, basically eating a few cookies everytime we went to the fridge..but we were kids and didn’t care. I still love the stuff but keep the noshing to a maximum of a spoonful or so.

Firstly…I’m so glad you’re back…I can honestly say I was checking daily on your old blog to see if you’d reappear.
Secondly those cookie balls look amazing!
And thirdly…I have a HUGE fear of throwing up too…to the point where I’ve tried hypnosis a few times, but to no success! My poor boyfriend has to stay in the other room when he’s ill or had too much to drink!
    Take care

    Looks delicious πŸ™‚
I would say baked cookies, though there are some cookies who have the most fabolous dough! It reminds me of childhood to give the dough a try.

Haha, yes, I’ve been food poisoned. It was on a trip to Lithuania where I was so smart ( read : stupid) to order chicken. It was obviously not well prepared so a couple of hours later it was straight to the hospital, where I stayed for two days. Not fun, but lesson learned.

Don’t like cookie dough?! You must be the first person I’ve ever heard this from! (well now you and a few above commenters haha) That being said, your reasoning DOES make sense. Raw egg risks ignored, I love the stuff. Sometimes I bake cookies JUST so I can sample the dough first. Don’t get me wrong, freshly baked cookies are wonderful. But the dough… oh the dough. I’m pretty darn sure that I’d adore these dough balls of yours too. I need more protein powder stat!

I used to buy the big 2 L tub of cookie dough ice cream. I’d eat all the cookie dough pieces first…then proceed to eat up the luscious vanilla.
    The. Entire. Tub.
    In less than 2 hours.
Yes…my food relationships have been very bizarre!

Probably choose cookie over the dough.

I’m still in the giddy phase of having you back. I was smiling like a little school girl when I saw your name bold in my reader!
Anyways. I’m all about the raw cookie dough. Well, raw vegan cookie dough. I could take or leave the baked cookies (usually leave, to be honest) but the dough? Yeah, I make cookies for people just so I can “do dishes.” (read: scrape the bowl clean with a spoon.)
That said, I’m fairly certain I’d be a littttle bit obsessed with these balls πŸ˜›
Surprisingly, I’ve yet to have food poisoning. I say it like that because a. I remember eating cookie dough (with eggs) as a kid all the time, and b. I’m a little rebellious when it comes to expiration date. (though I pay attention when it really counts…no rotten vegetables, yogurts, etc!)

I am SO with you on not liking raw cookie dough. My sister is the total opposite and “bakes” cookies only to never let them go near the oven and instead eat the dough with a spoon. Baked cookies are so much better than the dough – so I can’t understand why she never lets the cookies reach their full potential πŸ˜›

I too have a huge fear of throwing up and I’ve actually never had food poisoning. Though, when I was younger I had a virus which surfaced after eating Indian food. It was a total coincidence, but my 10 year old self was convinced it was the evil indian food and ever since I’ve been completely revolted by it – even the smell makes me feel sick!
