. a case of the mondays .

January 15, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 79 Comments

Guess who came down with a serious case of the… Mondays. This girl right here….

Sad Face

Mmmm hmm. I spent the majority of yesterday in a serious funk that just would not let up. I tried pretty much everything in an attempt to make myself feel better…

Breakfast didn’t help…

Breakfast Didn't Help

Plain Greek yogurt – banana – blueberries – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – Puffins – almond butter.

Blogging didn’t help happen…

Blogging Fail

Pinning didn’t help…

Hustle
Owning It

Video Games

Ambush
Bacon!

Beautifying didn’t help…

Makeup

Baking didn’t help…

Baking Gingersnaps

Coffee didn’t help…

Monday Afternoon Capp

(does anyone else find that coffee makes them even more tired sometimes?)

Exercise didn’t help…

Nike Frees

Chocolate didn’t help…

Afternoon Chocolate

(okay, maybe it did a little… You’re a lifesaver, Sara!!)

In the end I admitted defeat and decided to take a late afternoon nap, which incidentally is the only thing that did help. I guess staying up late the night before to finish my puzzle wasn’t the best idea I ever had…

Finished Puzzle

… but it seemed like a good one at the time. Live and learn. The lesson? Don’t skimp on sleep! I’m basically useless when I’m tired. Cranky. Unmotivated. Scatterbrained. Anxious. Oh, and insatiably hungry – when I’m tired, I crave sweet, carby foods like crazy and I basically end up snacking non-stop.

Thankfully, after getting my butt in bed around 10 last night, today is promising to be a much better day. Happy Tuesday, friends! 😀

. – . – . – .

Does a lack of sleep take away from your ability to have a good day?
Do you get super snacky on days where you feel more sleep deprived?

Does coffee ever makes you even more tired? Or do you have any idea why it happens to me?!

Oh my gosh I absolutely crave sweet, carby foods when I’m sleep-deprived. It’s something I realized way back in college when my sleep went down and sugar cravings sky-rocketed. Interesting (but logical) connection! Every single thing you mentioned is something I’ve tried to use to help cheer me up before. Make-up? It helps…sometimes. Chocolate? Always helps…but only temporarily. Hanging out on the computer just makes me groggier. And exercise simply doesn’t happen on drowsy days! It’s Wednesday now so hopefully you’re feeling much much better 🙂

    Absolutely spot on!

Lack of sleep drives me crazy – I basically feel miserable, cranky, moody, and I don’t even know what and why I’m fussy about – I just am.

I think everyone’s bound to reach for snacks, sugary food to perk their brains when feeling sleepy – it works – perhaps for that 10, 15 minutes, but after a while, we will still crash anyway – best to just: SLEEP.

Work get done more efficiently and the emotion is much more stable. Then the healthy cycle continues and we’re happy 🙂

Afternoon coffee ALWAYS makes me more sleep, especially when I drink it and I’m just sitting at home. It’s like hot milk before bed time…puts me riiiighhttt to sleep.

Gah! You know what? The milk definitely might have something to do with it. My mom always played that nasty trick on me when I was younger, so maybe that’s the case now too. But I don’t want to give up my capps 🙁 I do find that drinking water helps though.

Oh my gosh, my mood is SO dependent on the amount (or sometimes just the quality) of sleep that I get the night before…ESPECIALLY working night shift! And I totally hear ya on the crazy cravings…it’s like our bodies are revolting against us for depriving it of something we take for granted all too often. I don’t really do much coffee anymore, but I do remember hitting that point of “diminishing returns” with the java on those particularly sleep-deprived, I’m-on-my-sixth-shot-of-espresso-why-is-nothing-happening days! haha

Glad to see the nap helped you out! And even if the pinning didn’t quite do the trick for ya at the time, I gotta say I’m glad you shared…I about lost it with that last one! BACON!! Bahaha!

I’m so relieved the Ghiradelli bar arrived just in time to work a little magic on Monday. 😉 When I’m feeling tired or cranky, I *always* turn to chocolate first. A nap and a cup of coffee may be better life choices, but a good piece of salty dark never lets me down. It’s a cheap quick fix…and hey, I can’t complain about the antioxidant punch either. 🙂

Sleep is a huge mood determinant for me, too. If I get less than six hours, every facet of my life is affected! Do I become snackish? You bet! However, on those days, I try to give myself a pass, and enjoy the ride as much as possible. Funky days make the not-so-funky days even more wonderful, and I sure hope that was the case for you today! <3

Oh man, I get anxious if I know I didn’t get enough sleep. I would have been in crabby city! I hate naps, but sometimes they work like magic! I do sometimes feel worse after coffee, I don’t notice the buzz very often. I don’t drink enough to get jacked up on it.

FUNKS SUCK SO MUCH!!! I haven’t had one in awhile but when they do occur, it’s usually because of lack of sleep. I’m glad you got some shuteye though and are feeling better today. You know when coffee and chocolate don’t even help it’s serious! 😉 PS had a cappuccino this morning at Sbux and thought of you lol!

Ugh, I’m sorry you were in a bit of a funk…that’s no fun. I’ve actually had the coffee problem before – especially when I get it in the afternoon when I NEED a pick-me-up. I have no idea why it happens, but I’m not a fan. I hope today was better!

Girl I think I’m reading this and pretending it’s Monday. I had a god awful case of the Tuesdays today…I was so unmotivated to do anything seriously. (Though I was driving for a good portion) but I just felt incredibly in the dumps.

Chocolate didn’t help? It must have been bad. I’m absolutely useless when I don’t get enough sleep either – less than 7 hours and I am not fun to be around.

And the girl gamer – that is me, 100%. Especially when I break out Mortal Kombat or Tekken or something, you’d think I was actually trying to pull some crazy Kitana shit.

Haha omigosh I remember doing that all the time when I would play Street Fighter or even Mario Kart. But heck, everyone knows that moving the controller gives you that extra little push that you need 😉

When I get tired, I get super depressed. Like incredibly depressed. So I’m not surprised that your exhaustion had you in a seemingly interminable funk.
Kinda like this evening. It’s 7pm and I’ll stop probably be in bed within 75min.
    And that’s alright.
Funks happen (and you tried to cure yours with excellent potential solutions).
Hope you get some good sleep, bet that it helps a lot.
Ps. Don’t forget that it’s about the time that seasonal depression is really starting to hit hard.
Take care of yourself my dear. Text if need be. xo

Ugh the SAD… I seriously think that has something to do with it. I miss being outside, and I miss the sun! It’s been so cloudy and drab here lately. We get like 1-2 hours of actual sunshine a day, max.
