currently – october 2016

October 17, 2016 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 40 Comments

I keep forgetting it’s October because it legit looks like December outside 😳

I mean, we sat down to our Thanksgiving dinner last week, and it straight up felt like Christmas. Minus the tree. But October it is, and that means it’s time for another Currently post!

I love doing these not only as a little break from the recipes, but as a way to keep track of what’s going on over the years. Hope you like them too!

Currently

Current book: Empire of Storms* by Sarah J. Maas. I really, really love the whole Throne of Glass series, and Book #5 definitely hasn’t been a disappointment so far. Pick it up if you like YA fantasy and badass heroines.

empire-of-storms

Current music: So I came across an old iPod with songs that I used to listen to like… 14 years ago (omg seriously?!?!)… and this was one of the gems on it.

[youtube=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-tqzcq1BY0&w=640&h=427″]

Current [non]-guilty pleasure: My workouts. Is it weird to put that as a guilty pleasure? I dunno – they’ve just been feeling really good lately and I find myself always looking forward to them.

Current drink: Hot Cinnamon Spice tea* from Harney & Sons. This definitely isn’t a new thing since I’ve been drinking this tea daily for the past 7 (ish?) years, but it’s 100x more cozy around this time of the year. And it’s one of the only black teas I’ve found that actually taste sweet despite not having any added sugar.

Current food: Cultured coconut yogurt! Remember my obsession with Greek yogurt? I had to ease up on dairy after finding out that it really triggered my eczema, and while I don’t mind for the most part, I definitely missed my yogurt bowls. So thanks, So Delicious, for making them possible again.

Current obsession: My love for these flourless pumpkin brownies is borderline unhealthy. Or at least it would be if they weren’t so healthy 😉

Flourless Pumpkin Brownies

Current craving: Baked potato fries. With ketchup. Gimme, gimme.

Current need: To be able to hold a 5-minute plank. I wasn’t kidding yesterday – I’m doing it. Today is day 2 out of 30, and so far, so good 😏 I’ll keep you updated!

Current indulgence: Sleep, apparently. I’ve been getting more than I usually do thanks to the whole “go to bed late, wake up later thing,” and I definitely don’t hate it.

Current beauty product: So I recently tried out sheet masks for the first time, and I’m kind of diggin’ em! I can’t exactly recommend a specific kind since I just started using them and don’t really have much to compare, but I do like how they make my skin feel so I’m gonna look into them a bit more… even if they make me look a little crazy.

face-mask

Current procrastination: Christmas shopping! Oi. I really, really want to get my Christmas shopping finished early this year instead of waiting until the very last minute to even start. A part of me loves that last-minute rush, but the more rational part of me realizes it’s probably not the best way to go about doing things. That being said, I still haven’t started 😂 Hold me to it!

Current confession: I can’t do milk chocolate. It used to be the only kind of chocolate I’d eat back in the day, but now it just doesn’t do anything for my cocoa cravings. Give me 70 – 80% and I’m a happy camper.

Chocolate Chunks

Current excitement: There’s snow on the ground, which means that snowboarding is just around the corner! The season starts early in November, and even though the riding won’t be great that early, I still can’t wait to get out there.

Current mood: A little tired, actually. Is that a mood If not then I’m cranky. I put off finishing this post until a leeeeeeettle bit too late, so I’d really like to get to bed right now. Have an awesome Monday!

You just reminded me that I need a knife- I accidentally bought a ‘sashimi’ knife, thinking it was a sharp one (it’s not).

Now I’m craving that tea too!

I was sent some milk chocolate (Kit-Kats) in the mail, ate them, and then still needed dark chocolate to feel satisfied. I crave rich darkness!

I should join you on this plank challenge. My core is shot to shit and it wouldn’t hurt to improve it a bit. Hold me to it.

Also I need you to start Outlander already so we can discus. I’m on book five now so you need to read fast and catch up.

You have the same musical tastes as my hubby. 🙂

I love listening to playlists of my favourite music from high school – I get so nostalgic! It’s funny how I can still associate certain songs with certain moments/feelings/periods of my life.

My current book is The Danish Girl and my current food is this lovely beef ragu from Pinch of Yum that I’m having for a late dinner!

So many good memories, eh!?! I even found some mix tapes from way back in the day, but I couldn’t listen to them because I don’t have anything that plays tapes 😆

I don’t wish for snow, but like 30 degrees cooler than this major heatwave would be nice! Are you still biking for your workouts or what do you do when the weather is uncooperative?

I’m not biking so much anymore now that it’s so chilly outside, but I got a membership to the YMCA a few months back so I’ve been going there and either lifting or using the track.

Welcome to the wonderful world of planks :)! Seriously, I’m not kidding when I say they’re one of my favourite exercises. You’d call me crazy if I told you how long I usually hold them.
Though you might also call me crazy/odd for saying I’m not having -one- current book but three. It all makes sense, promise. Each of them is so good I don’t want to finish it too soon so I’m alternating. It’s been years since I spent so much time reading every day and it’s feeling so good.

I definitely don’t think you’re crazy for that! I’ve juggled 3 before, and it’s always good to have a lot of good things to read 🙂 And I remember you mentioning that you do crazy long planks – now you’ve got me curious as to just how long…

Wow you are on it with the Christmas shopping; I always kind of do it in um… December.

And your chocolate pumpkin brownies are on the list of ‘to make goodies.’ They look pretty amazing!

December is when I usually do mine too. Specifically, December 21st 😆 I’m thinking I’ll probably start by making a list, and then do the actual shopping in November.

It is way too early for Christmas shopping for me! Then again, it does feel more like autumn than like winter here in Colorado–at least for now. The leaves are so beautiful!
Good luck on your 5-minute plank!

I’m seriously so jealous that you have snow on the ground already!! While the nights are cooling down here, it still reaches 80s during the day 🙁 I won’t lie to you, I actually hate doing planks. I totally get bored!! I like incorporating them into workouts which makes them harder, but just holding them for 5 minutes? You’ve gotta have patience for that! Something that I apparently lack lol

Man it’s crazy to think you have snow and I think our temp is supposed to reach 90 today! (ugh) I did a plank challenge a few summers ago and I think I made it to a 3:30 plank before I stopped for whatever reason. I wanted to get to a 5 minute one.

Book: Looking for Lovely by Annie Downs. Non-fiction, but it’s a library book so it takes precedence. Also, The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire by Dan Howell and Phil Lester, because I love them and YouTube, and I’m *kinda* addicted. 😳

Food: Sweet potatoes!! I’m on vacation in California and I can finally get the variety of SP I’m used to and love, and I’m like 🙌🏽😍💪🏽💃🏽👍🏽 #allthesweetpotatothings

Need: I know I am greedy, but I’m feeling the need for even more family time. Now that I’m here in person and seeing my aunts and uncles on the weekends, I just want it to be ALLL DAY/WEEK LONG. Also, I SOSOSO want to see my cousins. 😣🙏🏽 I miss them like cray-zee.

Beauty product: Like I’ve said before, I don’t use traditional beauty products, but I think currently I’m loving most the vanilla body butter my mom makes for me using coconut butter and argon oil, and then she whips it with vanilla till its fluffy and smooth and smells lovely.

Confession: I’m basically using my extended family’s at work/during the daytime to catch up on blogs, watch YouTube, make some progress on my massive TBR, and finally get around to writing emails/letters/blog posts I’ve been wanting to type up for a long time. Is that bad?? 😳😯

Have a wonderful week, Amanda!! 💗

I totally don’t think wanting more family time makes you greedy! I wish I could see my extended family more often, but with them living over in Europe, that doesn’t happen often… so I hang out with my immediate family as much as I can. Mostly to mooch dinners from Mom 😛 Hope you’re having a great week, Hannah Elizabeth!

5 Minute planks, dang! I hate planks so much haha. I love sheet masks, though! I hate washing off the regular kind and this way is so much easier. I’ve tried a bunch and have liked them all.

I’m not really a fan either, but hopefully this will help! And YES to hating washing off masks… I end up having to wash my face and then wash my sink and counter since that stuff seems to go everywhere…

I can’t believe you have snow and we’re having a heat wave this week, back in the 80s! And whoa to that 5 minute plank because nowadays I’m not sure I can do a minute! Although I did survive another HIIT workout, maybe I’ll get there. Current food is actually roasted brussels sprouts, which I have to be careful with because I’m on the third day of indulging, just so good.
