. WIAW … emptying the fridge .

February 27, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 96 Comments

Sitting. Thinking. Thinking. Thi… Going!

Yesterday was a sad day. Let us observe a moment of silence to mourn the loss of a dear, sweet friend…

Last Slice of Banana Bread

The last melon slice (brownie points if you know where the melon reference is from).

We were very close, he and I, and I loved him dearly. So much so that I could have just eaten him right up… which may or may not have contributed to his untimely demise. But I shall remember him fondly, and he will be missed; especially because his loss means that I now have to eat actual legitimate meals. Sigh. Such is life… it’s hard sometimes.

And what makes it even harder? The fact that I haven’t gone grocery shopping in about a week and I’mย seriously running out of things to eat. I wanted to empty out my fridge as much as possible before I leave to Hawaii on Friday afternoon, but I didn’t count on it happening three days early. Eitherย I miscalculated or I eat more than I thought I did ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Whatever the case, please excuse enjoy this week’s WIAW… It’s not the healthiest, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t tasty.

WIAW

Thankfully, breakfasts have been pretty much the same…

Cereal for Breakfast

Plain Greek yogurt – banana – blueberries – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – roasted almond butter.

I can get by without a lot of foods, but I draw the line at cereal, bananas, almond butter, and Greek yogurt. As long as I have those four things I’m fine, and if I run out of even one of them? I make emergency grocery runs. No joke. If my banana supply drops below three, I start to panic a little… which is probably why it’s the only fruit (aside from frozen blueberries)ย that I currently have in my possession… which is probably also why I’ve been grabbing one to snack on multiple times a day…

Banana Snack

And I’d like to say the same thing about my cereal snacks…

Cereal Snacking

… buuuut I think it’s kind of obvious by now that I snack on cereal regardless of the availability of other food… I just love it that much. And speaking of other food, don’t worry – I’ve been eating some of that too, even if it hasย been coming from boxes ๐Ÿ˜• I had some Annie’s mac and cheese for lunch the other day…

Mac and Cheese

And Amy helped me out for dinner with one of her pizzas…

Amy's Pizza

Now, before you go thinking that I don’t eatย anythingย fresh, I’ll have you know that I tossed a salad (get it? tossed a salad!? No? aww…)ย somewhere in there for good measure…

Egg Salad

… treated my belly to some good bacteria…

Citrus Kombucha

… had some fruit [preparation] in my yogurt…

Oikos on the Go

… and I’m pretty sure that my cappuccino had some antioxidants in it too…

Snowy Day Bux

… even though I could do without the Winter Wonderland in the background. 2 more days, Amanda… 2 more days until Hawaii. Which also means 2 more days of trying to scrounge up meals in my severely depleted kitchen. I think I have a few eggs left… some frozen waffles… a can or two of soup… I should be okay ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

. – . – . – .

What’s one of your absolute favorite meals? Mac and cheese is definitely one of mine.
Do you like kombucha? What’s your favorite flavor?
ย Grape! Although, to be honest, they all taste pretty similar.
What pizza toppings do you NOT like? I’m not big on ham and pineapple, and I’ll always pick off olives.

I think I can go without pretty much anything for a few days EXCEPT eggs! I ran out the other day and going to the store the next day was at the TOP of my priority list! Lol

Hmm, one of my ABSOLUTE favorite meals? Think I’d have to go with pizza on that one…but ask me again tomorrow and I’ll probably tell you something else! And as far as pizza toppings go, I’m not a big fan of pepperoni or bacon…not on a pizza anyway…it just makes it too greasy! But I’d be MORE than happy to take those olives off your hands! ๐Ÿ˜€

LOVE the new(-ish) lavender flavor of kombucha! Definitely my favorite out of all the ones I’ve tried so far!

Haha sounds familiar! When I was away at school I would always try to clear out my fridge before heading home for weekends or long breaks. You start getting…creative… ๐Ÿ™‚ Although your food still looks totally normal! I was a big fan of “junk” salads where I threw in basically anything imaginable – the ultimate clear-your-fridge-out technique! Anyway, hopefully you’re on the airplane now heading to paradise…we’re all very very jealous ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun!!

I just posted the other day that I can’t allow my stockpile of granny smith apples to drop below 5! I can’t live without an apple and peanut butter a day…and as for peanut butter, I order Peanut Butter and Co. by the case so I tend to always have extra jars on hand.

LOL! Okay, confession? I sat there for a minute on that tossed a salad joke, because, well, I have the dirtiest mind ever. I was like, is she really saying that and so checking to make sure we heard her? No, you weren’t, that was just me. The big 13 year old boy perv.

Oops! And you’re food definitely looks healthy. I believe “healthy” is about being balanced and delicious as well. We aren’t rabbits!

I’ve actually never tried komboucha. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about it so I was never truly convinced to get out there and give it a shot.

One of my favorite meals- Tacos, always.

P.S. I love Annie’s line but haven’t tried the pizza – whatcha think?

You should definitely give kombucha a try! It honestly did wonders for my stomach. And I really recommend the pizza as well. It’s super tasty and the ingredients are pretty great for a frozen meal. I keep one or two in my freezer at all times in case of emergencies, and they’ve never let me down.

This always happens to me when I am about to go out of town. I usually survive on cereal and almond milk from the unlimited store in my pantry but always end up feeling very produce deprived.

I’m a huge fan of your banana bread (as you should know ;)), and I can’t wait to try this one too! And I’ve never tried Kombucha… You guys in Canada and the States with all your amazing products! We barely get greek yogurt here (Fage only comes into certain stores as limited stock… I make sure to pick up all the containers on the shelf!) ๐Ÿ™

Eeek! I remember having to deal with the same thing when I was visiting family in Poland. Only certain stores carried Fage, and in really limited supply. I feel your pain, though… there are a lot of things from the States that we don’t get up here in Canada ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

You’re a whole lot braver than me. I’ve always been scared that I’ll do something wrong and end up giving myself food poisoning. My mom makes her own kefir, and even though she’s been doing it for years with no negative effects, I still refuse to try it ๐Ÿ˜†

I’m guilty of making emergency grocery runs when I run out of dark chocolate…and spinach…and pretty much any fruit. Yeah, luckily I’ve been trying to stay on top of my fridge and pantry inventory to avoid those emergency trips that always end up costing more than I expected!

I’m the exact opposite, olives HAVE to be on my pizza, preferably of the kalamata variety, and I love all other unusual toppings like figs, capers, roasted kale and artichoke hearts. But as far as toppings I don’t like, pretty much any fruit other than figs, meat (obviously) and cheese–I don’t even do the vegan cheeses like Daiya, I much prefer my pizzas without any cheese at all. It’s all about the other toppings for me!

What kind of Amy’s pizzas do you buy ?? I used to buy the BIG ones and eat them all in one sitting…I used to do the same things with “ristorante” pizzas…stupid orthorexia prevents that now (though ironically I’ll eat literally 1000 cals at midnight in yogurt, fruit, nuts and chocolate ๐Ÿ™

I just wish I could have your bravado. I need to straighten out my digestion FIRST> I know from your old blog that you took it easy with things for a long while (less dairy, less complicated stuff, etc…I NEED to do that for a while but all I end up doing (or want to do) is eat EVERYTHING.

I’m having a VERY tough time now because i”m home for a long while indefinitely, live in the WINDIEST , coldest rural place on earth. One grocery store (no such thing as hormone free or organic or health products…barely anything) . And I cannot get outside, ever…unless I want to freeze or blow away. My family has this tiny ancient treadmill that has NO incline, so that’s not really effective (may as well just walk in place. And I’m facing this for months and months. Everything feels so …wrong.

Gah, I just wish I could be free and figure out all this crap in life. Seriously.

Mmm, those meals look preeeetty good for ‘scrounging’. I think one of my all time favorite meals is either sushi or pizza. I can always eat those two. I’m not a big fan of pineapple on pizza either. And I don’t eat pork, so I’ve never had ham on mine before. I’m all for keeping it simple with marinara, mozarella, and some basil.
One of my favorite flavors of kombucha is ginger, but I’ll definitely have to try grape!
Yay for two more days til hawaii!! – Which island are you going to??

I’ve been scrounging for food all week too! It kind of turned into a game for me- how many meals can I make out of my quickly diminishing food supply? I have to admit, it hasn’t been as miserable as it sounds! And, by the looks of your meals, it hasn’t been to bad for you either!

Hey that doesn’t look too bad for eating down the inventory! I have to do that every time I visit home and, like you, there are a few staples that I REFUSE to be without. I mean hey, I wouldn’t be complaining about that mac and cheese or that pizza, both are looking pretty awesome! (as I sit here at work starting to get really hungry and already ate my snacks…grrr). I think you can definitley make it 2 more days – especially if you’ve got your daily sbux fix ๐Ÿ˜€

Mac & cheese, oh so yummy, yet I haven’t had it in close to 10 years. WHAT?! Gotta fix that…
One of my FAVORITE meals would have to be salmon, mashed sweet potatoes with blueberries and a crumb topping made of oats with brown sugar and cinnamon (baked), roasted butternut squash, and vegetarian baked beans with kale chips. And lots and lots of parmesaen cheese. Emphasis on lots. Like, really parmesaen cheese with a side of the rest of the food. OBSESSED. Oh so good. Just, delicious.
I’ve actually never had kombucha before, but I’ve read about it and seen it on other blogs. Everywhere.
Disgusting pizza toppings (to me) include: jalapenos and olives. Just, ew. Everything else is welcome. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’d say your eats look pretty good for having an almost empty fridge! ๐Ÿ˜€ I always have a stock of bananas and Greek yogurt too. Always.

One of my absolute favourite meals is a taco salad with turkey meat cooked with taco seasoning, tomato, romaine lettuce, guacamole, plain Greek yogurt, cheddar cheese, and crushed up tortilla chips. So good!

I like kombucha but I don’t drink it that often! My favourite is the Third Eye Chai flavour.

And I’m not a fan of pineapple on pizza either. Bleck. The only fruit on pizza that I like are figs. I also don’t really like olives or broccoli on my pizza.
