. WIAW … questionable cravings .

February 6, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 74 Comments

Oh for crying out loud…

I’ve been sitting here for something like fifteen minutes twiddling my thumbs while trying to come up with a clever way to start today’s post, and my efforts have been in vain – I’ve got nothing. Nada. Zip. I think my brain is still feeling a little bit fried after yesterday’s commenting etiquette post, which I really loved reading your guys’ comments on, by the way. It’s a delicate issue that doesn’t really seem to have a clear cut answer. Definitely some food for thought.

But today, we’re going to switch gears and talk about food for the body – it is WIAW after all…

WIAWI tried to come up with a theme for this week’s WIAW, but quickly realized that my eats over the past little while have had no real rhyme or reason. Aside from starting and ending the day with cereal…

Cereal Mess

Breakfast: plain Greek yogurt, banana, blueberries, cinnamon Puffins, Kashi Honey Sunshine, roasted almond butter.

Bedtime Cereal

Bedtime snack: Raisin Bran with a banana and milk.

… and enjoying my daily cappuccinos…

Foamy Cappuccino

… things have been pretty random around these parts. Take this salad, for example…

Salad Snack

A snack. Who the heck am I!? I can’t even remember the last time I craved veggies for a snack, but I found myself wanting chicken and hot sauce one afternoon and hey… who am I to question a craving. Actually, I take that back – I have been questioning my cravings. You guys know I have a huge sweet tooth, right? Well, lately I’ve been passing up the saccharine seducers and gravitating more towards… salt…

Popchips

Sour Cream and Onion Popchips.

Salsa with a Spoon

Salsa, straight from the jar.

Hummus and Chips

Hummus and anything I can stick in it (ie: chips, veggies, spoon, finger…)

Yeah, don’t ask me – I can’t explain it either. You needn’t be too concerned just yet, though; the sweet tooth has still been kicking in from time to time…

Chocolate Pudding

Zensoy Chocolate Vanilla pudding.

Chocolate Oat Bran

Oat bran made with coconut milk, then mixed with yogurt and topped with chocolate.

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Muffin

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Muffins. I needed a break from cookies and went the muffin route instead.

And I guess I should probably mention that I’ve been eating actual meals as well, and not just snacking all day.

English Muffins for Lunch

Lunch: English muffin topped with avocado and jam, carrot sticks, salad.

Pumpkin Chili

Dinner: pumpkin chili Mexican scramble with Annie’s cheddar bunnies.

So there we have it: the food that’s been keeping me going as of late. And speaking of going, it’s time for me to run (figuratively speaking). Between work and volunteering, today is going to be a long day indeed.

Have a good one, friends!

. – . – . – .

What was the last craving you satisfied?
Have you experienced any “what the heck?!” cravings lately?
Snacks: sweet or salty?

Avocado and jelly sandwich?! That’s a new one! Have you heard of Sprint 2 the Table’s “Weird but Good” link-up??

Yup I have! I’ve thought about linking up on a few occasions, but I somehow always forget 😕

Random cravings always crack me up. Recently, I found myself really wanting a pancake at 4 pm…so I made it happen. Whatever works.

The last craving I satisfied was for sushi, but since I had to work, there was no going out SO I made a sushi-fied salad…topped that baby with tuna, cucumber, carrots, avocado, pickled ginger and then doused it in this amazing soy/teriyaki sauce I picked up at Trader Joes! It was AMAZING!

My “what the heck” craving lately (and for the last several weeks actually) has been for tomatoes. I picked up a huge carton of grape tomatoes at the warehouse store a few weeks ago and polished that thing off in like 4 days! And mostly just from popping them in my mouth like they were popcorn! Lol

Most of my snacks tend to be on the sweeter side…fruit, yogurt, or my latest…cauliflower dessert pizza! I’ve been eating them nonstop all week!

Want a “what the heck” craving? I’ll give you one. Just one because you won’t be able to stop laughing if I reveal more. Last week I had this craving for tinned sardines and sauerkraut. Together. With some paprika on top. This was the ugliest meal I’ve ever had (mashing the sardines with a spoon didn’t help the appearance much 😀 ) but, oh boy, was it delicious! Simply amazing!

    Beat that 😛

Ever since I can remember I’ve had a soft spot for savory foods. My mum had to force me to eat my slice of chocolate cake after dinner because I just wasn’t interested. Then for a few years I craved chocolate more than anything. I thought it was because it was on the list of forbidden foods but even after that I kept eating copious amounts of chocolate and cookies. Now I’ve stopped again. I’ve bought only one package of cookies since the beginning of the year and I don’t really miss them. I never thought that fixing the chemical mess in my brain would help me git rid of the unnatural sugar cravings.

Btw, the banana and cocoa powder idea is already in use. Yum!

I have to admit that you win in the “what the heck” craving category – I definitely can’t beat that.

I have a serious sweet tooth too, but I have quite a few salty snacks that I love–really good olives, dry roasted edamame, hummus, guacamole and pickles are some of my faves.

I’ve actually been craving banana softserve lately after having it again last week after a long hiatus. Luckily I have a few bananas that are almost ready to be made into ‘ice cream’…

I can definitely eat salsa straight from the jar. I absolutely LOVE the bean and corn variates! The weirdest craving I’ve been having lately is blue cheese. I swear I could just rip a HUNK off and eat it right now. Mmm, stinky cheese.

Every time I see pictures of your pumpkin chili, it looks SO good!

Gotta go with those cravings!! I’ve been craving salty things a lot too, which oddly that’s what I crave when I get sick. I think it’s the dehydration/electrolyte factor, flu makes me a little sodium depleted….hence my pop chips for breakfast LOL. I think during my normal life I actually crave salt more than sweet because I sweat so much (especially in summer), but again, makes sense. Anyway not to get all scientific, food is food haha. I’m totally with you on the salsa, chips, hummus, avocado, hot sauce, chicken, veggies trend right now!

I tend to crave saltier things a lot more in the summer too, but it makes no sense because it’s still freezing outside right now! And my doctor actually recommended that I eat a little bit more sodium because I have pretty low blood pressure all the time, so it helps keep me from feeling like I’m going to pass out.

I was craving something sweet, so I just had some chocolate chip banana bread from work with some almond butter. Craving = satisfied.

90% of the time I want sweet snacks, but every so often I get a hankering for salty. I know they’re a “diet food” and probably full of chemicals, but Special K sour cream and onion chippy cracker things are SO good.

This definitely happened to me last week where I was craving way more savory foods than usual. This week is back to my good old sweet tooth though. 🙂

Umm now I really want some pudding and would love to try that zensoy one! I’m not a pudding fan but it must be my hormones making me even WANNA try that one 😛 And your snack bowls always look so yummy! Not sure if it’s the way you take the picture, or the sound of the mixture, but the oat bran sounds interesting.

Honestly? This weekend I was craving mad banana-GreekYo parfaits. I blame you. Banana:Yogurt ratio was 2:1. The yogurt was strawberry flavoured. Whole thing was enjoyed over 18th century German lit.
