Fruit in a cake is always a YES. So is Whipped cream “frosting”… unless cream cheese frosting is an option (nothing beats that!). A Polish translation of Happy Birthday is also a YES πŸ™‚

Omg, that cake looks delicious!! It’s such a good idea too; such a creative way to use boxed cake mix. I always want to make cakes, but I’m too lazy to make fancy ones and the plain Betty Crocker cake & frosting ones are too boring. I am definitely going to use that idea the next time I bake a cake!

This cake is GORGEOUS!! I love the layers and the addition of the fruit filling. Fruit in cake YAY for sure!! I could go either way with icing vs whipped cream. I am hoping to make myself a vegan friendly whipped cream soon so I can start using it with goodies!! Happy Birthday to Papa Spoons..such a close B-day to Mama Spoons!!

Happy birthday papa spoons! I have had such an emotional tail-spin of a weekend! So in this emotional state- fruit in cake yay, whipped cream- of course- dessert stomach can be seen forming once your dinner has filled up your main one right near your belly-button when you glance down. And now I shall proceed to cook a cake just for me and my emotions πŸ™‚ Your cake is magnifico ! Love and hugs (and happy celebrations) Sophia

I’m not really much of a frosting person, is that weird? I’d rather eat just a bunch of the cake plain. That being said, I much prefer Angel food cake with tons of cool whip/whipped cream. Dessert stomach – yes. I always need to eat something sweet after dinner.

Absolutely – cakes with fruits are the best. My favorite is my moms deep dish apple cake and for my boyfriend I have to make the same cake every single year: mole cake (named such because it looks like a molehill) chocolate cake topped with bananas, cream and more chocolate cake crumbled on top. If I could chose, I’d prefer your combination – chocolate cake and cherries… lucky papa spoons!

I love using boxed cake mix and then adding twists of your own to it because it tastes completely authentic but cuts out some of the unnecessary steps! This looks AMAZING. I love the combo of chocolate and fruit (especially cherry because of the tartness) and the shaved chocolate is perfection. Your dad is a lucky guy πŸ™‚

Are we talking Black Forest Cake here? In that case my mum would tell you you’ve forgotten the booze/kirsch to soak the cake ;). Looks really good in anyway! You did a great job and I’m sure your dad appreciated it.
I’ve let you know before but just to state it once again :): Whipped cream beats frosting every time. As for the dessert stomach: Fact. Plain and simple. Lately, I’ve come to find the same goes for almond butter. Almond butter stomach – why not?!

Actually, the kirsch is seen as one of the integral ingredients of the cake (called “SchwarzwΓ€lder Kirschtorte” in Germany :)). It’s a liqueur that used to be produced mainly in the Black Forest though it’s more widely produced these days [I totally just looked that up because I’m not exactly an expert on that matter :D].
Let me know if you’d like me to translate and type up the recipe my mum uses for any future celebrations – or as a “just because” cake :).

I think fruit in cake is okay, as long as the fruit doesn’t overpower the rest of the cake…then it would just be pie!

Whipped cream beats frosting every single time. My favorite kind of frosting is the light and fluffy kind that has the consistency of whipped cream. I hate dense frosting.

    Dessert stomach is definitely fact!

Your cake looks delicious. It’s making me crave a light, fluffy cake…

One of my roomates in college – who is now my best friend – was Polish and I loved her family and traditions! πŸ™‚ Plus, I love the Polish language. Fruit in cake: yup. Cherries, blueberries and strawberries being the best options πŸ˜‰
Frosting versus whipped cream: as much as I adore whipped cream…I have to go with frosting. If I’m around an unguarded tub of buttercream or crease cheese frosting…well…there won’t be much for the actual cake.
Dessert stomach: absolutely. I can be oh-my-god-I’m-dying-full, but if someone places chocolate or cake in front of me, you better believe I’m taking a bite πŸ˜‰

Hope Poppa Spoons loved his birthday celebration! Clearly, he must have enjoyed the cake, because who wouldn’t enjoy that amazing looking confection there?

Such a cute and fun post.

I’m more into pies and cobblers and crisps than cake, so I’ll definitely take fruit in cake. Whipped cream beats frosting, unless it’s cream cheese frosting. Cream cheese frosting always wins. I don’t usually get a stomachache from too much dessert, but I’ll feel way too thirsty and just kind of gross. Don’t know a better way to explain it than that.

Happy birthday to your dad! (I think? Just saw the tags…)
