down the rabbit hole & my tastebuds are broken (ToL#202)

September 29, 2016 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 38 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Hi! Hi. I’m here. It’s late, but I’m here. I mean, it’s not late when you’re reading this since it’ll go up at the same time that it always does, but it’s about 8pm on Wednesday night right now, which is a little later than I normally like to start writing. But I have a reason! I do, and that reason is that my dog ate my notes I just fell into a rabbit hole and spent the past FOUR HOURS on YouTube watching the most recent documentary that came out on JonBenét Ramsey. I was pretty young when it happened, but I still remember seeing and hearing about her everywhere, and it’s hard to believe that, after 20 years, we still don’t know what happened. So many theories 🤔

2. Speaking of theories, my mom has this one about how it’s important to go to sleep before midnight because those hours are more valuable than the ones that come after midnight. I don’t know how legit that is, but she’s been telling me this for as long as I can remember… and while I feel like it was just a scheme to try and get me to go to sleep earlier back in my crazy years, I have noticed that I average about 6 hours on the nights I go to sleep around 10:30, and about 7.5 on the nights I go to sleep past midnight. Hmmmm. I would really hate to have to admit that she was right after all these years 😂

Sleeping Spoon

3. Oh! You know who else was right? Anyone who ever said that prescheduling social media posts in big batches is the way to go. I feel like it’s something I’ve read countless times over all the years I’ve been blogging, but never actually gone ahead and done. I mean, I’ve been using Tailwind for Pinterest for a while now, but nothing really outside of that… which is probably why I’ve been struggling with it. Anyways! I made it a point to set aside a bit of time on Sunday to schedule all my Facebook posts for the week, aaaaaand I’m basically kicking myself for not doing this sooner. I mean, sure, it’s a bit of a pain when you’re actually doing it, but the set-and-forget mentality is a beautiful thing in the long run. I’m sold.

4. I’m also firmly standing behind my instant coffee habit. I know it tends to get a bad rap (and some of it IS really bad), but I’ve come across a few that are actually pretty good. Example:

instant-espresso

And to be perfectly honest? At this point I’d take a cup of that over a cup of way-too-strong Starbucks coffee.

5. That being said, there might be something wrong with my tastebuds because I’m actually thinking about posting a savoury recipe this weekend. I know. It happens about once a year, and I’m pretty sure it always involves sweet potatoes. Here’s my last savoury recipe, in case you’re curious -> Baked Egg Stuffed Sweet Potatoes.

Baked Egg Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

6. And that’s it for me this week! My brain is feeling particularly uncooperative when it comes to creativity, hence the slightly shorter ToL. BUT! I’ll talk to you again soon 😘

It is so easy to stuck on YouTube for hours! I try to keep from going on there because it usually means trouble when I do.

I’m so excited to see this savory recipe! And thanks for the tip about batch scheduling social media. I’m definitely going to start doing that, although it probably won’t happen until the new year. Procrastinate? Who, me? Never! 😉

Just had a cup of instant coffee today actually! And for breakfast I had your strawberry shortcake overnight oatmeal smoothie. It was so delicious! Your overnight oats smoothies are the best. More flavors would be much appreciated! (Not that you aren’t busy enough I’m sure! 🙂

I gave up coffee. I never used to be a coffee drinker and developed a habit after too many late nights. Also, I wrote my post out this morning. Super cheesed off with the app I use on my phone for blog posts. Last random: the expression I’ve been driving/ running/ whatever ‘for a minute’ is cracking me up! How do these things go viral so quickly??

I remember the JonBenet thing too and I really want to watch that documentary. I’ve been getting really into true crime podcasts lately and all the stories are fascinating.

I listened to a podcast episode about sleep, and the guy said the hours between 10-2 are the most important. Which kills my little night owl part of me, because going to be before 10 is mind blowing. I’ve kind of seen a difference, though. Not that I do it now, I actually don’t anymore, and that’s the problem, lol. I rarely go to sleep before midnight, but I want to try to get to sleep earlier, especially as my body seems to be changing its sleeping habits, and I can’t sleep in very well. 😕

Starbucks coffee is wayyyy too strong! Even the medium roast is like battery acid and I have to cut the bitterness with milk.

OMG – the JonBenet Ramsey case gives me the creeps. Was the documentary enlightening or scary or some combination of the two?

YES on the sleep theory. I think it has a lot to do with your body’s circadian rhythms, which dictate energy levels, et al. Did a research project on it back in high school and it was amazing how much things like jet lag can really stress the functions!

Bring on the savory recipes!!! I love them all!!!

I’ve heard that sleep theory too and I think your mom is right. When I go to sleep after midnight (which is most nights), I am more tired than if I go to sleep before midnight, even with the same total amount of sleep. I guess Mom knows best.

I was born in the year of the JonBenet case, so I had no idea what it was all about until I listened to a podcast on it recently. Seriously freaky stuff.
And savory with sweet potatoes sounds EXCELLENT to me.

I have been trying to get myself into the habit of pre-scheduling posts. It’s a new thing, so I’m trying to be patient with myself, but it’s hard! I definitely see how it can help me with this whole life-work balance thing, but, man. What a learning curve.

Hmm… That’s interesting about your sleep? Do you find that you sleep better for those 6 hours if you go to bed at 10:30 pm? Or do you sleep better if you go to sleep past midnight? Oh yes, and I absolutely love being able to schedule pins and posts on Facebook; it really helps. I love Buffer for Twitter too.

Is it weird that Im obsessed with cases such as JonBenét Ramsey? I guess it stems from my need to always know the outcome of things [Im the kid who would read the END of the book first] and the fact that we still don’t know what happened to that poor child intrigues me. I believe we have one of the best forensics and law teams in the world here in America so the fact that whomever killed her has gotten away with it for this long just kind of irks me. Like, how is that even possible!! Especially when you know it was most likely a crime of passion and not premeditated. Ok wow – didn’t mean to get that intense about it 😉
Can’t wait for a savory recipe!!

I’m an early to bed, early to rise kind of gal. Although I do sometimes sleep later when we’re away and there are no animals to take care of, and particularly appreciated Lola at least staying quiet for so long while we were just away.

Savory is good. Especially when it involves sweet potatoes. I need more savory in my life, especially at this time of year!

I only ever drank instant coffee before I moved to Canada because it’s so popular in Trinidad. My family is so weirded out by the fact that I actually grind me own beans and brew coffee now lol Oh and Nescafe is prob the most popular one in Trinidad. I can literally taste it just by looking at that pic and I haven’t had it in yearsss

I wish I could pre-schedule my posts and social media stuff, but I’m just not that organized. I’m more off-the-cuff! But it would make life easier – sometimes I’m staring at a blank blog page wondering what to write and it’s stressful! It would be nice to have some drafts ready to go when I need them.

I love instant coffee. It’s easy and I’ve had a few brands that are actually pretty good!

You know, I’m a pretty self admitted coffee snob, and yet even I have been having some instant coffee packs lately and have been pretty darn impressed. And none of them have given me the bad jitters/energy surge that some real coffee does. So… I’m all aboard.

I’ve heard that theory about sleep before midnight being more valuable somewhere too. If I go to bed after midnight I’m usually exhausted the next day (even if I sleep in late). So I’m convinced it’s true!
