. thinking out loud #117 .

February 12, 2015 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 87 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. I have to start by saying that you guys are freaking epic! I mentioned in January’s At A Glance post that I was hoping to hit over 100 Thinking Out Loud submissions “in the next few months,” and you guys went ahead and knocked that goal out of the park just one week later! Last week’s ToL was the biggest one to date with 105 submissions, and I just wanted to thank you guys and let you know how much I appreciate everyone who participates, comments, or even just lurks silently 😉 You guys rock my socks off.

2. What doesn’t rock my socks off is when I somehow manage to dump 1/2 cup of dried dill into my mashed potatoes because someone (read: Amanda) didn’t screw the lid on well enough and it went flying into the pot on the first good shake…

Too Much Dill

I ate them anyways 😆 Not with all the dill, mind you, but I only managed to scrape some of it off so my potatoes were slightly dill-ier than I would have liked. Oh wells.

3. Had I not been starving and ready to eat my left arm off (I’m right handed so I need the right one), I probably would have whipped up a batch of buckwheat kasha instead. I’ve been trying to rotate my grains lately so that I can get some more variety in my diet, which lead to me falling in love with kasha all over again. I’m not the biggest fan of plain buckwheat groats, but when they’re toasted? Heaven. They have a really distinct nutty flavour and a nice fluffy texture. I definitely recommend giving them a try if you’ve never had them before!

Buckwheat Breakfast for Dinner

4. I also recommend these two things from MAC…

MAC Products

Fix+ and Cleanse Off Oil. I’ve been using both on and off for years, and we’re currently very much on. That dry skin I mentioned as being the bane of my existence in the beginning of February? Very much gone… at least on my face. I’ve been using the oil in place of my regular cleanser to take off my makeup at night, and Fix+ a few times throughout the day. Both are great for keeping that irritating tight skin feeling at bay.

5. You know when you spend so much time looking at the same word that it no longer makes any sense? That’s exactly what happened to me and “sample” while I was trying to pick out fonts the other day. It got to the point where I was like… “is that even English?!?“

Sample Fonts

6. I also got the weirdest craving for orange juice [the other day]. And I say “the weirdest” because I’m not really a big juice drinker. I used to be, but it’s been a good handful of years since I actually went out of my way to get some. It reminded me of my little kid days when Mom would always put a juice box in my lunch kit. Awwwrs.

Orange Juice

7. Speaking of my little kid days… I miss playing video games! I’ve been a pretty solid gamer for as long as I can remember, and it’s always been one of my favourite ways to relax and de-stress. Some people watch their favourite shows; I play my favourite games. That being said, I can’t even remember the last time I played one 😥 Heck, I’ve even stopped playing FarmVille! That needs to change…

Warcraft Druid

8. This is getting a tad bit long, so I’m going to end it on #8 this week… by asking if you have any plans for Valentine’s? I can’t say that Valentine’s has ever been my favourite holiday to celebrate (regardless of whether I was single or not), but I’m not one of those people that flat out hates it either. I’ll be heading up to the mountains this weekend, not on a romantic getaway, but to batter my poor body on the slopes. It’s going to be a good time

I’ve been trying to mix up my grains too lately. I think it’s good to get a mix, and I’m making a concentrated effort to inhale more veggies. I’ve been slipping lately and I feel it. Nothing drastic mind you; this is me after all.

I hope you’re having a blast in the mountains.

Ooo the accidental spice dump happens to me more often than I’d like to admit. Usually it’s cinnamon, but hey, cinnamon has a ton of health benefits, right?
I used to love the Green Machine Naked juice when I was a little nugget, so my mom used to buy that for me as a treat. I could go for some [nostalgic] Naked juice 🙂

I’ve gone a bit overboard with the cinnamon as well, but I don’t think I’ve ever reached the point where I couldn’t handle it. Herbs are a little more difficult. And if we’re talking anything spicy? Noooooo way. My tongue is a wimp when it comes to hot foods.

I am gagging so hard at that dill incident. Maybe because I associate dill with green beans (I adore every vegetable, but green beans NEVER. They are literally my least favorite food!) as my dad always seasons his green beans with dill. A perfect glob of mashed potatoes-ruined!

And do I even have to express my jealousy at your mountain excursions again?

I always hate when you’re in the middle of texting or something and you CANNOT remember how to spell a word. And auto correct cannot be trusted for ANYTHING these days, so I’m resorted to Google it and hope I can get something!

No Valentine’s Day plans for this girl. Whomp, whomp. Hopefully I’ll get a gift from my one true love… My mom. Hahaha. Have fun in the mountains!!!

I miss video game days too! We used to have 007 tournaments on the Nintendo 64 growing up! Then when I moved in with my sister a couple years ago we continued and now that we live in different cities it has vanished 🙁

I miss gaming. My XBOX doesn’t work properly with the TV here so I haven’t been able to play in months 🙁 and is it bad that I’d consider switching to a desktop computer for the sake of the Sims 4? Ya…

Mmm buckwheat groat sound so yummy! I’m in a serious relationship with oatmeal for breakfast, but it might be time to try a little something new. Any special way that you prepare them?

    Thanks for the link-up today!

Nothing too special, nope! I just whip up a big batch of grains (1:2 grains to water ratio) and portion some out into a bowl with chopped apple, raisins, and almond butter.

I hate when you poor more ingredients in than you meant.
Congrats on surpassing your goal! That is awesome.
Have an awesome Valentine’s Day. I’m covering my hubby’s shift at work while he performs all day.

I did the same thing that you did with dill with garlic powder last week when making eggs…such a bummer when that happens. I’m not sure which is worse, though…accidentally sending a heckuvalot of spices into something, or accidentally putting the wrong spice into a dish (case in point – I accidentally added cinnamon instead of cumin to a recipe recently and it was no bueno.)

Thank you for hosting the link-up today!

Eep! I’m not sure I’d be able to deal if it happened with garlic. I mean, I like a little flavour in my dishes, but I don’t know about -that- much. And I once accidentally put cumin into my oatmeal instead of cinnamon — I don’t recommend it 😆

For some reason people give MAC cleanse off oil a bad name (from what customers tell me), but it’s SOOO amazing. It literally gets every single drop of makeup off of your face. And Fix Plus is my BFF, I’m pretty sure I use it on every single client! I always spray it before I apply foundation since I prefer to work on moist surfaces. It’s so amazing for a multitude of things!
Haha, I do that ALL that time with dumping spices into things. It happens with cinnamon like every day. You think I’d learn, but I never do.
Yah, my Valentine’s Day plans include hanging with friends since I’m beyond single but I don’t mind either way! Any day about love is a good thing in my books!

Ahh…have fun skiing! Be safe and no injuries allowed! 🙂

My Valentine and I are going to a new restaurant that is actually fancier for our taste (I’m a beer, pizza, and wings date) so I am a bit excited, although not looking forward to trekking downtown on crutches…and what to wear with this boot will be interesting. On actual Valentine’s Day I think we are going to our local favorite dive bar or ordering a heart shaped pizza…Is it bad that I am more excited for that night than the fancy one? Oops!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Congrats on the milestone! I love the weekly linkup, I love that I get to be as random or not random as I want! I was laughing at your feeling of the word “sample”. I get that every once in a while and will have to Google it to make sure I spelled it correctly and my brain isn’t playing games on me. What app were you using to edit your picture? Your weekend sounds fabulous, even if I cannot do any snow sport at all! Looks gorgeous, enjoy! xoxo, ganeeban

That’s great you had so many submissions for the Tuesday link up. This week was my first time, and I really enjoyed it and today is my first time doing the Thursday link up. I’m kinda new to the whole blogging thing!
That stinks about the mashed potatoes and the dill. That sounds like something that could happen to me, but it would have been my own fault the lid wasn’t on all the way! LOL

I grew up eating kasha (Eastern Europeans unite, whaddup!) and still love it to this day. A few years ago I discovered the joy that is raw buckwheat groats and obsessively used it for vegan buckwheat waffles and microwave buckwheat bakes. I agree though, the toasted vs. raw buckwheat totally have different flavors.

I’m giggling at your Photoshop “SAMPLE”…the EXACT SAME THING ALWAYS happens to me <— capital letters 100% necessary. 'Sample' always starts looking so weird to me after a few minutes. Foreign word!

What comes to mind… hmmm that I’m definitely coming down with a cold and I’m not super thrilled about it.

My very sweet fiance surprised me with dinner reservations to my favorite restaurant for Valentine’s Day this year. I was shocked when he told me, because it’s NOT cheap and we’ve been very frugal lately, but he is insisting on it. I’m not going to argue 🙂

Hi Amanda! Too bad about your cooking fail! And you know, I’ve never tried kasha before, so perhaps I should get on that. Sadly, I’m not linking up today (didn’t think I had the right content, and would NOT want to take advantage), but congrats on growing this fun weekly idea! Happy Thursday! 🙂
