. what i love more than pumpkin .

October 14, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 45 Comments

I know I spend a lot of time doting on fall here on Spoons, but that’s because I literally can’t get over how much I love this time of the year. It’s the way the sunshine hits the golden leaves and sets them ablaze. It’s the coziness offered by oversized sweaters, chunky scarves, and worn-in riding boots. It’s the comforting taste of roasted pumpkin, baked apples, and warming spices. It’s the intoxicating smell of the crisp air and fallen leaves.

But more than anything else, the thing I love most about fall is the feeling that comes with it – the peace and calm that washes over me as soon as the leaves begin to change.

An Evening View

As much as I enjoy summer, I have to admit that I also find it somewhat exhausting. Not only am I not made for the heat, but the fact that it’s still warm and sunny out at 9:30 PM means it’s hard to spend a relaxing night at home in your PJs without feeling at least a tad bit guilty for not being outside and making the most of it.

But with fall comes stillness, and it’s this, more than pumpkins, sweaters, and pretty leaves, that I welcome with open arms… especially because it means that I get to spend more time cozying up at home.

Glade Warmer on Table

My idea of a perfect fall evening in requires four simple things: comfy PJs, a good book, a warm drink, and a relaxing aroma drifting through the air. Sometimes I’ll achieve that last one by whipping up a delicious treat in the oven, but more often than not, it’s the work of this little guy right here…

Glade Warmer Close Up

Allow me to introduce you to my Glade Wax Melts Warmer; also known as the pretty blue pot that makes my entire home smell ah.maze.ing. It works like a scented candle, only better because you don’t have to worry about forgetting about it or leaving an open flame unattended. Another bonus is that the scent lasts forever – long after the warmer has been turned off. I started using my warmer before I left for the mountains last weekend, and the first thing I noticed when I came back home was that it still smelled like apples and cinnamon.

And if you need any more convincing, I can vouch for the fact that these wax melts are lifesavers. How so? Well, they’re strong enough to mask any unpleasant odours that might be hanging around, which comes in handy if, say, you just steamed up a batch of broccoli and some friends decide to pay you a surprise visit. Not that I would know, or anything…

I have seen these Glade® Wax Melts at the store – but I wasn’t sure what they smelt like – I do have a question – is your warmer an electric one? or is there a tealight that goes into it?
    Thanks for this review Amanda!

Yup! It’s all electric, which is super convenient since I have a tendency to forget about these kind of things 😆

I like the seasons, even winter a teeny tiny bit, although it would be my least favorite. I like being able to use the fireplace in the fall and snuggle up with a book and perhaps a cat and a cup of tea. Most of the yard work is done (although I will have to rake leaves) and I get to stay inside and relax. I’m with you on that. I even have my own melty wax candle thing, with a plethora of flavors. I got it from a coworker years ago and I still use it today.

Sigh… I sure do miss the beauty of fall. Unfortunately there is no changing of leave colors here, or nice crisp mornings. Instead our temperatures are still over 100, and I have palm trees out front. Haha! Do you mind if I just live vigurously through your fall posts? 🙂

The weather in Austin is finally cooling down a bit and it is helping me get into the fall spirit! In the mean time, I eat pumpkin, burn candles and just pretend. 🙂

It’s definitely not feeling a lot like fall here (other than the cool mornings and evenings – I HAVE been loving that!), but I agree with you…fall has more of a calmer and cozier feel to it. I love using my wax burner to make home feel cozier during the holidays. Right now I have a pumpkin wax in it! Mmmmm.

I love the glade line, i’m always melting them around the house. Your right it is hard to justify being in your jammies at 9:30 in the summer time because it’s just starting to get dark. I can’t wait for the days to get cooler now. I was in Charleston all weekend and only a few of their leaves had changed and fallen. I’m glad to be back home to see the change. I hope your having a great day!

Fall is by far the best season. It’s going up to 25* here in Toronto today though – CRAZY!! My favourite this has got to be the fashion. I’m a leggings/big sweater kinda girl. Also- what’s this news about you coming to Toronto?? Arman told me a while back that he would be here and just the other day he said he’d be spending time with YOU. I was like WHAAAAAAT???? I better get to meet the both of you!!

Jokes, jokes 😛 I’ll be heading to TO in a few weeks (!!!!), and the only reason I haven’t said anything [to you] is because I wanted to have dates and everything 100% set before I started bugging you about it. You better believe you’re on my list of people I MUST see!

You are spot on about the stillness that autumn brings, everything just calms down and is so peaceful. I went for a walk in my local park on Sunday and I don’t think I have seen it look more beautiful. 🙂

I am 100% with you on this entire post. I feel so guilty in the summer when it’s nice out and all I want to do is un-wind with a cup of coffee and a book. Plus, I like having the option to bundle up with sweatpants and a sweatshirt or a blanket without sweating my toosh off. I do love summer for the extra Vitamin D and nice skin tone change, but it gets old after about a month. Then, all I want is cooler air (NO SNOW) and coffee… and soup.

Also, I’ve gone through too many apple cinnamon candles in the last month, so I’m going to look into getting one of these 😀

YES to the part about summer being kinda annoying because you feel bad for wanting to be at home in your PJs at night being cozy. It’s impossible, and i love that feeling. Like, i don’t love that it starts getting dark around here at 3:45 in the winter, but during fall when it gets dark around 7, i’m cool with it 🙂

Grrr whhyyy doesn’t fall exist in Mumbai- you make it sounds SO magical :)! When I lived in London, my favourite part about fall (or should I say ‘autumn’) would be the crisp weather (i.e. cool enough for a blazer but no need for any additional layers) and just watching the leaves turn colour to that gorgeous shade of reddish/orange!

Mental note to self: Make sure You are in the West during Fall 2015!!

I am not a summer person. I don’t like to break a sweat unless I’m working out and walking to my car doesn’t fit the bill. I am also allergic to mosquitoes, so being outside in the evening is miserable when you’re being eaten alive and have welts all over. Fall just encompasses all of my favorite things. Comfy clothes, blankets, hot drinks, being able to bake without breaking a sweat in the kitchen, and good smells. This perfectly captures my favorite things about fall. Thank you!

I love fall too, so much!! The fashion 🙂 Of course. I love the come back of all the boots, the leather jackets, sometimes an oversized beanie when it’s windy and still warm enough for endless walks. And yeah, pumpkin. Especially cause our squash season is so short! I am eating it for every single meal currently. I migth have an overdose soon, considering if that is even possible. I think not.

The cool weather if my favorite. I have a courtyard extension off my kitchen with a covered trealice. I have a three pocket patio door that opens the entire courtyard to the the kitchen. This time of year is perfect for opening everything up especially after the brutal heat. I’m thankful AZ doesn’t do time changes because it still gets dark 7:30-8 even in the summer.

I would not be okay with 9:30 pm sunlight either. I keep meaning to tell someone how disappointed I am in the three wick candle from Bath & Body works. I like the smell but the wax somehow drips everywhere, getting on to my counter which makes no sense! It’s a mess.

I get summer guilt too! I can’t take the heat, but I wind up feeling bad about wanting to stay indoors, like I’m not making the most of it as you said. I’ve never heard anyone else describe it this way but it’s absolutely the way I feel! It just makes fall that much better for me though. I’m starting to realize it’s okay to just not be that into summer 🙂

Okay, Canada wins this one. The leaves are starting to change a little here, and pumpkin is all over the shelves in stores. However, it’s still quite warm. I want to bust out chunky sweaters and boots, but it’s still 80-something or at least 75F. Ughhhh. Oh well, better enjoy it while I can though!
