. the problem with getting personal .

by Amanda @ .running with spoons. on February 2, 2013

Happy Saturday, friends!

Thank you guys for your feedback on yesterday’s all-important question. The general consensus seems to be: yes to getting more personal, and yes to posting more than once a day. When it comes to posting frequency, I can’t promise that every day will be a 2-post-a-day kind of day, since a lot will depend on how busy I am and whether or not I have anything worth saying, but I can promise you that I’m really going to make a conscious effort to give you guys more glimpses into my life. The only problem is… I really don’t find my life all that interesting for the most part, and I don’t want to bore you to tears. Let’s take yesterday for example…

I could tell you that one of the most difficult decisions I had to make all day was what kind of gum I felt like chewing in the afternoon…

Gum Decisions

I went with strawberry, by the way; and no, I still haven’t taken my puzzle apart.

I could tell you that even though my birthday was a month ago, I still have some reminders lying floating around…

Surviving Birthday Balloon

I could tell you that I went the store to replenish my yogurt supply (I was down to one tub!!), and in true Amanda fashion, walked out with a few new-to-me beauty products to try…

New Makeup to Try

I could tell you that I also picked up some applesauce, even though homemade is infinitely better…

Storebought Applesauce

I could tell you why I did that. It’s because ever since I started eating so much fresh applesauce, I’ve had a strange red bumps break out around my mouth. I thought it was some sort of hormonal breakout at first, but I noticed it would get a lot worse whenever my applesauce consumption went up. I switched back to store bought a few weeks ago and haven’t had any problems since. I couldn’t tell you why, so perhaps you could tell me? My apples were organic and everything…

Apple Craving

I could tell you that I went for a 40 minute walk on the treadmill…

Nike Free's

… but that hardly seems significant when people are running 5+ miles a day and rocking all sorts of WODs.

I could tell you that the boy was working last night so I ended my already super exciting day at an hour where most people are just getting started with their weekend [read: 10 PM]…

Nap Time

I could tell you that I really don’t like going to sleep that early because a) I wake up multiple times throughout the course of the night whenever I do, and b) I end up wide awake at the crack of dawn [read: 4:53 AM].

Rough Morning

I could tell you that I play Warcraft to kill time…

Mists of Pandaria

… but that would only be partially true. I play Warcraft because I love it.

I could tell you that this morning’s breakfast of plain Greek yogurt, a banana, blueberries, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest, and almond butter was fan-freakin-tastic…

Delicious Cereal Breakfast

… but you probably already expected that ;)

Aaaaand I could tell you that the winner of the Witness to Fitness giveaway is:

Book Winner

… Jill. Congrats, girl! E-mail me with your contact info and I’ll forward it to the company.

. – . – . – .

So there you have it – a few random and seemingly meaningless facts about my day. But that’s just everyday life, isn’t it? Same old, same old… or maybe I really am boring and need to get out more  I just find it particularly difficult to feel all motivated and enthusiastic about life around this time of the year. Constantly dealing with cold and sunless days like this…

Sunless Days

… really takes the pep out of my step, and I find myself resorting to simply trying to get through each day rather than make the most of it; which definitely isn’t helping my case any. But Spring is coming. The days are getting longer. There’s no need to despair. So I’m going to do my best to stop my moping and drag my butt out of the house to get some things done. See you guys tomorrow!

What’s something that you could tell me about your day? If I’m sharing, it’s only fair that you do too!
Do you ever feel like your life is just plain boring? Or am I the only one?

Well yesterday I was pretty upset because at my store they were flat our of the cottage cheese I like. I even made them check out back, never starts your day out right with stuff like that. Gr. Sometimes earlier bedtimes are needed even if we are wide awake at the crack of dawn.

Oh can I relate to that… All my stores were experiencing an Oikos yogurt shortage. Seriously, every single one I went to for like a week straight didn’t have any plain yogurt and I was starting to panic a little. I think I need to start buying a month’s supply whenever I come across them…

My life is most DEFINITELY boring a lot of the time, but I try to hit the key points that I think are worth sharing, the things I am proud of, or the things that I think will make someone laugh. I think your post was perfect! I LOVE knowing what gum you chose (seriously that sounds whoaaa creeper, but I thought it was funnayy!) I went to bed around 10 too..I am so cool see?

Hmm my life my life…yesterday I spent the majority of my morning playing Susie homemaker cleaning my house, taking care of my sister, and making food. It was a blast.

FREE RUNS!!! Best shoe ever, hey? I want them in every color. We all have boring lives – and at times, I find that I feel pretty mediocre when I’m in conversation with certain people. To the point where I’ll shut down and not offer up any info about myself. For example, my Aunt (in law) has two sons that are the same age as me- both of them are Harvard grads, and are living ‘the life’. She’ll gush about them then ask what I’ve been doing. In my mind I’m like, “ummm… baking cookies? putting on red lipstick?” I feel so inferior! I know I shouldn’t, but it’s hard.

Gah! Can I ever relate to that. I don’t even necessarily know anyone who’s ‘living the life’ but I still tend to clam up whenever someone asks me what I’m up to. I just feel so, like you said, mediocre.

Joe and I went to bed at 10:00 last night…on our first full night together in over a month…we’re wild and crazy ;) But doing so found me wide awake at 5 :( oh well, that’s what naps during the afternoon are for! And I like hearing little details about your life! I don’t think they’re boring haha, but maybe I’m just super nosy…and I feel like my life is super boring all the time, so I’m trying to push myself out and make plans to do something at least once a weekend..doesn’t always work, but I am finding myself busier…and your treadmill walk sounds much better to me than any crazy WOD or 5+ mile run! As much as I love running, anything over 5 gets rough sometimes, so I’ve really been enjoying shorter distances recently haha

Okay, so these red bumps…were they (I know this is gross) filled with clear liquid? I’ve had the same issue for six months…the only thing I can attribute it to so far is a water bottle I had been using every day for a year. I can’t fit my hand in to physically wash the bottom of it, so I usually just filled it up with soapy water and shook the bottle to clean it. I stopped using the bottle when I went home for Christmas, and the bumps seemed to be non-existent for a while, but then I came back to school and used the water bottle again and my lips immediately broke out. I haven’t used the bottle since, but my lips seem to be aggravated by spicy foods and chapstick (I have to use Aquaphor by Eucerin now).

Just wondering if you’re experiencing something similar – even steroid cream from the dermo couldn’t knock it out!

Reply

9 Amanda @ .running with spoons. February 2, 2013 at 11:22 am

Yup! Clear liquid bumps. Mine aren’t on my lips though – they’re kind of in the area around it; so under my nose and on my chin. I feel like it’s allergy related, but I just can’t figure out what the heck I could be allergic to :?

Reply

10 Sara February 2, 2013 at 12:04 pm

I’m not sure if you use a lot of chapstick/lip products, but quitting those seemed to help the bumps go away, too. I was told it was dermatitis, so I guess the trick now is to figure out what makes them act up.

And I can’t believe you posted that pic of the Maybelline mascara- my friend was just showing it to me today and recommending I try it out! Your day sounds far from mundane to me..the little things are what make it great :) ! A few things I could tell you about my day:

It involved a lie-in, oatmeal breakfast, workout followed by some work at home, blow dry at the salon, coffee with a friend, watching Hansel & Gretel in 3d and then dinner at a friend’s :) ! Have a great Saturday, Amanda!

I used the mascara today, and I really like it! It adds some nice definition and length without clumping, and it seems to be holding a curl rather nicely. I don’t know if I would call it super volumizing, but it looks great all the same!

Yesterday I went to the gym, the mall, and my butt made best friends with the couch because I had an 11-mile run today. I went to bed early too, so I’m hoping tonight will be a more exciting night than last night was. I’m currently doing laundry, snacking on trail mix, and watching The Lion King II. I’ll probably take a nap sometime today… so I guess it looks like Saturday is shaping up to be as exciting as Friday was.

Are you a several-packs-of-gum-in-your- purse person too?! I’ve earned a reputation among my friends; I *always* have at least two packs, but it’s not unusual to find three or even four floating around. I haven’t tried any of the Trident fruity flavors though; I tend to stick to mint, but occasionally dabble into “dessert” flavors by Extra. My goodness…is it sad that I just wrote a paragraph about gum? ;)

I’m glad to hear you’ll be sharing more about YOU! I think the reason that small life details are so fascinating to others is because they’re relatable. Let’s face it, most of our lives are pretty ho-hum on a day-to-day basis! However that doesn’t mean an adorable tea mug (I’m still in love with Minnie) or a super cool pair of Nike kicks aren’t conversation-worthy. Those are things I think about on a daily basis, and I love knowing that others can relate. :)

Happy weekend! <3

Gum is serious business ;) And yes, I’m notorious for carrying around multiple packs because I never know what I’ll be in the mood for! I always have at least a minty one and a fruity one, depending on what I’m in the mood for; and I usually have more than one fruit one… again… depending on what I’m in the mood for :D

Honestly? I’m enjoying even these seemingly boring little facts from your/other bloggers lifes because they are SO relatable. Isn’t that the reason most of us read blogs for :) ? I’ve read a quote somewhere somewhen – yes, being totally specific here … It said something along the lines of bloggers writing because it made them and their readers feel “a little less lonely and weird” – doesn’t sound nice at first but at least for me I think there’s some truth in it. I might not use “lonely and weird” but I think blogging helps us realize how many people everywhere share the same interests, have the same quirky habits and helps us connect. Well, in short: Blogging is plain awesome :) .

Yes, my life does seem boring to me most of the time. Most likely we think so because we have gotten so used to ourselves and our lifes but to others they can really seem interesting. Not that I’d think that of my life but … others lifes :) . So about today I could tell you I just had breakfast when I realized I needed to rush to the central station. Having to catch a train at 9.40 AM is just too early for me – don’t judge, I’m a night owl. Still got the train in the end and am spending the weekend at my parents’ now.

You’re right – blogging is definitely wonderful when it comes to helping us feel less strange about some of our quirky habits, and don’t worry… I didn’t think you were calling me boring at all; and even if you were, it wouldn’t upset me in the least because I’d have to agree ;)

Have fun at your parents’ this weekend, girlie! I hope there’s a cake involved! :D

Oh, and that was not to say I thought your life was boring – sorry if it came over that way! Reading those little tidbits made me like you even more if that’s possible :) . Hey, a 40 minute walk IS a workout and I’d much rather read that than somebody listing their super-intense bazillion workouts a day anytime!

As for the applesauce I know that problem and I think the store-bought one is less acidic than homemade for some reason. I’m not sure why but I feel it is.

Well, considering I spend a majority of my day trying to ice my knee/rehabilitate myself my life is pretty boring as well. I’m okay with you posting as much as you like whether it be once a day, once every other day, or thirteen times in one day. :-) Just post whenever you feel like it! It shouldn’t be a set thing. Also, with the “personal” side of things, just try writing about what you think about daily.. I guess? It doesn’t have to necessarily be things you “do” during the day. Personal could be what you feel about a certain topic or ANYTHING really!

You make me wanna play COD or counter-strike so bad but I am resisting. I refuse. UGH I want to so bad!

Seriously, your life cannot be any more boring than mine! Although I don’t mind it, but blogging about it every day would just not be interesting at all. I don’t have enough to say for twice weekly posts, let alone twice a day!

You seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about running? I only say this because you’re always being ‘jokey critical’ about ‘just’ walking, not being a natural runner (seriously, almost no-one is. I couldn’t run a step for the first eighteen years of my life) and not exercising like other bloggers. If you want to run, run! If you don’t, be at peace with the decision not to – your stance on exercise makes your blog quite unique and you shouldn’t feel the need to apologise for it all the time.

And you may think it’s boring, but I love hearing about people’s lives, even if it’s the mundane, smaller details (sociology degree much?). This morning I did all my shopping, this afternoon is schoolwork, then it’s picking up dinner and watching 28 Days Later with the boy. Then probably more schoolwork. I was in bed at 8 pm last night as I have been all week. Then woke up in the middle of the night for a couple hours and slept til just after 6am. That’s ok with me. I’m a total morning person (yet I’m a vampire night shift worker a week every month and handle it fine but recovery is a bitch.).
This morning I went to Costco and discovered that my 12 pack of Liberte Greek yogurt is no more and replaced with Skodakis. They were sampling it and it was ok. I am picky about yogurt too. Have you tried the locally made Bles Wold plain yogurt? They sell it at the Italian centre, planet organic and save on now too. It’s really delicious and has no additives or gelatin. They also make a full fat Greek yogurt. I need to start making my own homemade yogurt again. It’s been about a year.

Reply

49 Amanda @ .running with spoons. February 2, 2013 at 1:31 pm

I’ve seen that Bles Wold yogurt in Save On and was really curious about it, but I haven’t picked it up just yet. I’m pretty much stuck on 2% plain Oikos, so getting me to try anything different is near impossible… unless my store is out of stock, which they seem to have been lately :?

Reply

50 Dione February 2, 2013 at 1:58 pm

Definitely give it a try and maybe review it here! It would be my number one yogurt pick if Save On or rhe Italian centre was in walking distance (no car). I sometimes makes special trips for it. I mainly shop at Sobeys, Costco (South is only a 5 to 10 minute bus ride from me) and rarely Safeway which is generally a rip off.
And there’s nothing more annoying than going to a store for a specific item to find it out of stock…especially if you’ve gone out of your way.

Reply

51 Amanda @ .running with spoons. February 2, 2013 at 4:24 pm

I’ll definitely pick up a tub the next time in in the store then! And oh! Have you seen the new Lovegrown hot oats at Sobeys? I don’t generally shop there, but I heard that they were supposed to start carrying those oats and I’ve been wanting to try them.

52 Jill February 3, 2013 at 6:07 am

I usually buy Liberte OR Oikos. There are no organic yogurts where I live. …I haave a yogurt problem (as in 500 grams in ONE day every day…money issue and tummy issue!). My mom likes “Iogo” and I think I might start eating that one…it actually looks kinda good.

53 Dione February 3, 2013 at 8:11 am

I know what you mean about the weather getting you down :( I live in Alberta too and I always get really depressed around this time of year. It’s definitely pretty bleak around these parts especially because our winters are so long. Here’s hoping for an actual spring this year! Maybe you can do a post about keeping your spirits up around this time.

I could try, but it’s honestly something I would probably have to put some work into. Every year I swear that I’m going to keep my spirits up, and every year I end up getting mopey anyways. Spring is coming soon though! The days are already getting longer :D

haha I love this post — soo true. I def. think life can be boring at times..but if it wasn’t boring at times we wouldn’t know the difference between boring & exciting. haha I know what you mean though – I recently got a new puppy and she will def. be keeping me really occupied. love your blog though :]

Ahh it’s okay, we’re not celebrities or political figures trekking around the world all day, every day… I definitely think my line of work is very interesting, but… I would never blog about it because I’m paranoid that way :D Other than that though, can’t say my life would be blog-worthy! But hey, blogs are like journals too right? So as long as you get satisfaction out of it, it’s all good! I just feel like I already lack much of a social life as is, so if I started blogging and trying to catch up on everyone else’s blog, I’d REALLY close myself into this virtual world… and then I’d just feel sorry for myself LOL.

Anyway, those bumps really might be an allergic reaction to the type of apples you’re getting…. maybe with applesauce they use different kinds which you can handle better? I’ve had a spot on my lower lip that itches a couple times a day, but it’s not discolored or anything, and I can only imagine it’s an allergy… but from what, I have no clue! lol

Work! Oi. The volunteering I do is super interesting, but yeah… I’m definitely paranoid about even mentioning anything about it. As for keeping up with the blog world, it’s really not that bad. At least it gives me something to do in the winter when I’m too afraid of going outside and freezing to death.

I definitely need to work on getting a little more personal on my blog as well, but I think the problem is that whenever I am out with friends and family I typically don’t pull out my camera and don’t feel comfortable putting too many pictures of them on my blog so basically it would just be a bunch of selfies and pictures of whatever goes on non-food wise haha!

I think that 40 minutes on the treadmill is great! I love your blog because you are so relatable, not boring! I could tell you that I also woke up early, but I kind of liked it because it offered time for me to read blogs and really appreciate that it is Saturday :)

My life is super boring too! I sleep, study, work, blog, cook, read, and workout, and that’s about it. :P

I’ve been waking up so early these days… maybe it’s my early bedtime to blame. I should try to keep my eyes open until 11 tonight and see if that helps me sleep in haha.

I could tell you that after watching Casino Royale last night, I had some crazy dreams and woke up feeling really uneasy. I could also tell you about how I hate it when you’re on the phone with someone you really like and he hangs up so he can talk to another girl. Haha it’s just easier to laugh at things like that instead of cry like I really want to. Yes, I think today is one of my saddest days in a while. Tomorrow will be better!

haha i dont find your life boring at all! plus i love your cereal and nail color pics to much (sounds creepy saying that haha!) My life is exciting to me, when really when I think about it or am telling other people about what kind of workout I did or what I am learning in school it sounds sooo lame ! 40 minutes on a treadmill is awesome! Some days all I need is a long walk to clear my head and keep me sane! My day was so exciting I went to the gym early because I was awake (10pm bedtime!) then went to work all day which is always entertaining and am now am sitting in bed watching a movie. Party animal. Enjoy your weekend!

Love this post!
About my day… I cleaned, did some school work, went grocery shopping, ran, and went out to dinner. Not very exciting, either, but it was a good day :)
Tomorrow I’m making snacks for the Super Bowl and watching my son play lots of soccer. Is that more exciting?

I think we all have those ‘boring’ days, but your day doesn’t look boring at all–you got some new beauty products, which is always a good day in my book!

Today I finally got my Whole Foods salad bar fix after a whole 2 weeks without it. Yep, I’m shamelessly addicted. And…I designed an ad for lotion for my advertising creativity class. I’m not much of an artist, but it’s fun to come up with ad ideas!

I always think that if we have a good and fun attitude about ourselves, no matter how “boring” we may see to the standards of the world, we’re actually all interesting in our own little ways! I love you Amanda! I love that you’re honest, down to earth, and so easy to relate to because you just seem to be~YOU. :D And one thing I can tell you about my day(s) lately is that I’ve been having lottttsss of physical discomfort, pain, etc. and don’t wanna bring anybody down lol. But I’m hanging in there and know that it’s all worth Selah in the end :D Have a great Sunday, lovely sista!

Well, my day just started but it’s going to be quite nice one. I slept over 10 hours, the sun’s shining and I don’t have to do anything, no duties. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Sometimes I feel like my life is boring, it’s true. But I also try to avoid such thoughts. Life is unique in everyone’s case.

You’ve reminded me I totally need to make some apple sauce soon! Weird with those red spots, I have no idea what that could be! I think my life is pretty standard, but I think people do like hearing about the day to day things from other people as they can be quite interesting, and a real way for people to get to know you better :-)

I often feel super boring – that and my life mostly consists of “i’m super stressed about school” and “I spent my friday night studying on campus” and such. I hardly think people want to read about that stuff week after week. I wish I was one of those people who was good at telling stories so I could write about the random little things that happen to me, and make them sound interesting.

Regarding the applesauce – do you have other tree-nut allergies? Because I know a lot of people who have nut allergies and other food *sensitivities*, including apple SKINS (and sometimes pineapple, carrots, other things too). They’re fine to eat apple flesh, but the skins either give them a rash or make their mouths itch. Just a hunch.

That’s pretty interesting – I do actually have other tree nut allergies, and I have the same problem with pineapples. Whenever I make the applesauce, I peel the skins, though… so I have no idea.

I must agree – the weather here is cold and snowy and totally not helping my lack of motivation!! How many more days till spring?? I’m seriously considering planning a weekend retreat to Florida in the next month if I can get a cheap enough flight!
As for my weekend – I did my weekly shopping at Who,e Foods followed by going to my niece’s 4th birthday party. Tonight – Super Bowl – mainly for the commercials!!

I think the real issue is, you’re comparing yourself! I only say this because I did it, too for so long, thinking who cares what i have to write, people are running marathons, and lifting a million pounds, and going exciting places like Madrid and Bali, and wearing prettier clothes, and were prettier, and funnier, and better writers, and….no! I do sometimes think I’m a little boring, but I took that as a personal challenge, to, “spice up my life!” (Like singing karaoke this weekend in Koreatown). I think we see what people want us to see in their blogs, and that’s okay. No need to compare, each blog and each person, has their own appeal. :)

Hmm, well…I WENT to bed at 9:30 tonight. And then after tossing and turning for an HOUR?! I finally just said to heck with it! It’s now 1:30 ?!? and sleep is still nowhere in sight! Gah, I really like working the night shift at the hospital (it’s done tremendous things for my stress level) but I swear I can’t catch a break on my days off! Maybe I should tell the other night tech to quit and I’ll just work 24/7! Ohh, the money I would have…to buy food with! ;) Lol

For the most part, I feel like I lead a pretty boring life, but after a whirlwind of a trip to Atlanta last weekend AND the trouble I’ve been having with my knee (which is only getting worse), I’m looking forward to a lonnnnnnnng weekend of doing absolutely nothing! :D

PS, I swear…you and (Smart Kitchen) Sarah make some amazingly pornirific bowls of cereal! Lol
