. a case of the mondays .

by Amanda @ .running with spoons. on January 15, 2013

Guess who came down with a serious case of the… Mondays. This girl right here….

Sad Face

Mmmm hmm. I spent the majority of yesterday in a serious funk that just would not let up. I tried pretty much everything in an attempt to make myself feel better…

Breakfast didn’t help…

Breakfast Didn't Help

Plain Greek yogurt – banana – blueberries – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – Puffins – almond butter.

Blogging didn’t help happen…

Blogging Fail

Pinning didn’t help…

Hustle
Owning It

Video Games

Ambush
Bacon!

Beautifying didn’t help…

Makeup

Baking didn’t help…

Baking Gingersnaps

Coffee didn’t help…

Monday Afternoon Capp

(does anyone else find that coffee makes them even more tired sometimes?)

Exercise didn’t help…

Nike Frees

Chocolate didn’t help…

Afternoon Chocolate

(okay, maybe it did a little… You’re a lifesaver, Sara!!)

In the end I admitted defeat and decided to take a late afternoon nap, which incidentally is the only thing that did help. I guess staying up late the night before to finish my puzzle wasn’t the best idea I ever had…

Finished Puzzle

… but it seemed like a good one at the time. Live and learn. The lesson? Don’t skimp on sleep! I’m basically useless when I’m tired. Cranky. Unmotivated. Scatterbrained. Anxious. Oh, and insatiably hungry – when I’m tired, I crave sweet, carby foods like crazy and I basically end up snacking non-stop.

Thankfully, after getting my butt in bed around 10 last night, today is promising to be a much better day. Happy Tuesday, friends! :D

. – . – . – .

Does a lack of sleep take away from your ability to have a good day?
Do you get super snacky on days where you feel more sleep deprived?

Does coffee ever makes you even more tired? Or do you have any idea why it happens to me?!

Sorry about the funk! I had one yesterday too, but luckily a short cardio workout finally started to lift it in the evening. I think winter is to blame for a HUGE part of my funk. :(
Lack of sleep also contributes & makes me a hungry, irritable beast. LOL
Have a happy Tuesday today!! No more funk!! ;)

Winter is definitely a huge part of it! A lack of sun + being forced to stay inside so much = a less than happy camper.

Oh sorry Hunn that you had a rough day!!! I know exactly how it feels. Best thing about it? They pass!!! And I am glad you feel better today. Lack of sleep is a no go for me. I might be boring by passing out latest 10pm, but I don’t care – it’s what I need. I am bitchy, and as you, craving sweets and carbs when I did not have a good rest. And if chocolate does not help, it gets difficult :-) For me, it is always a good cup of tea (Schoko from Yogi Tea, my suggestion), a good book or curling up on the couch with a blanket and ‘Actually Love’ or SATC. Always helps. No coffee for me though….
Sending you a big cheer-up-hug!!!

Ah sorry you had a crappy start to your week, Amanda…but at least that only means one thing: today can only be better :-)! The puzzle looks great and you are on a roll with the baking- what flavour cookies ate those? I always get so hungry (and cranky) when I’m sleep-deprived..that probably explains the insatiable hunger that always hits when I’m travelling. Although some may argue that we just need a new perspective on cranky days, sometimes all it takes is a nap :-)!

Hope today started off on the right foot…if not I order you to hit up Starbs for a cappuccino!

Today is definitely a better day – thanks Khushboo :) And the cookies were supposed to be gingersnaps, but you can hardly taste the ginger at all so they really just taste like browned butter cookies. Still delicious, but I was looking forward to some spice!

I need at least 6 hours of sleep every night – but 7 is more my actual need. If I don’t get enough sleep I feel hazy and weird all day. Sometimes coffee helps, sometimes it doesn’t. It only gives you a jolt temporarily and unless you keep feeding the caffeine monster you will crash again.

I hate it when I get into funks. It’s definitely not fun at all. I crave food all day long too and it just puts you into an even deeper funk. And you’re right- it usually is just a result of a lack of sleep. I’m glad you were able to get yourself to bed early to help snap out of it! And I REALLY hope today is better for you! They don’t call it terrific tuesday for nothing ;)

Dang girl, if all of the above did not help, I might have been in a panic! Glad the nap worked finally. Sometimes you just have to give in & fall asleep to try to “re-set”, that works for me a lot as well. And YES for being snack on sleep deprived days, usually a nightmare! Hope today’s better for ya!

Sleeping any less than 8 hours instantly makes my day not as great as it could be, no matter what. BUT excuse me that dark chocolate bar is my absolute favorite one. I literally write that exact brand/kind of my mom’s grocery list. Definitely helps with my funks too. Glad you are feeling better today lovey and glad to have you back here. <3

and that is a problem why? no seriously though – i bake things all the time because it improves my mood and there is simply no way i will eat them all before they go bad so i’m always pawning them off on people at work. i always make sure they’re delicious before i do, so i think my coworkers are lucky :)

Aw, I’m sorry you had a bad day, Amanda! I hope it at least was worth staying up late then night before ;)?

Sleep really is key to having a good day to me. Needless to say, my less than six hours last night and having to be in university by eight did not make me a happy girl. I’m definitely even more snacky when sleep-deprived! I keep telling myself I’ll make more of an effort to snack less and have bigger meals once my current class schedule changes – which will hopefully be next week. Need to keep myself accountable this time.

Congrats on finishing the puzzle – what a cute one! And it sounds like you didn’t get sick – yay to that, too!

Oh. Mah. Goodness. It is unreal what a difference sleep (or lack thereof) makes. I can feel it the instant my alarm goes off in the morning – if I didn’t get enough, I’m already in a fog that’s tough to shake. As good an idea as the Downton Abbey marathon or Reader catch up or late night chat seemed at the time – I’m useless the next day and it’s not worth it. Hope you got a good night’s sleep and are back in the swing today!

16 Amanda @ .running with spoons. January 15, 2013 at 1:04 pm

I can’t even tell you how many nights my Reader has kept me up as well! I like to finish the day without too many unread posts so that I’m not bombarded the next morning, but I should probably look in to changing that in favor of more sleep.

17 Jessica January 15, 2013 at 8:54 am

Yes to coffee = sleepyiness sometimes! I can’t drink espressos, double espressos even more so, just make me tired about an hour after drinking. Don’t know why. I don’t drink much coffee so, weird but yes, I avoid espressos because they have the opposite effect!

I don’t sleep that well most of the time so I think that I am used to it but, nevertheless, I do think that particularly bad nights just make you so out of it and blue. To be honest, I don’t think there’s anything you can do on those days. I tend to avoid people because I’m so mean to people too. :-(

Hope today was a good one! :-)

ANYWAY haha! :) I definitely need my sleep otherwise I am just plain grumpy. But when I say 'my sleep' I'm probably talking more than the average person…I've been getting 9/10 hours recently. I'm a student, that's my excuse! :P And on days that I don't get my monster sleeps? I definitely eat more snacks, especially carbs and sweets too! Coffee doesn’t do anything for me anymore in terms of keeping me awake… that’s probably because I drink at least 2 cups a day. {Guilty}

I get super snacky when I’m tired too! It makes perfect sense, when you’re tired you have no energy. And food = energy, so it’s no wonder your body craves it! Naps are the best and the only cure for those situations.

I would’ve stayed up late to finish the puzzle too though.

Coffee definitely makes me more tired at times. I’ll drink a cup and afterwards is the only time I can lay down to nap. It’s the weirdest thing. Also (I’m sure you read this before), people tend to get hungry more often if they don’t get enough sleep. I guess its the body’s way of needing fuel to stay awake/keep alert because it didn’t get enough beauty time.

I’ve spent way too many days staying up late to finish puzzles and levels of video games. Oof.

Sleep messes with leptin levels, so it’s actually true (scientifically speaking) that less sleep=feeling snacky. Doesn’t reflect too well on me with my insomnia/12 hours in one night cycles!

Bleh, sorry you have a case of the Mondays. The horrible, snowy weather here is making me feel very blue as well…and there is no end in sight to it, it seems.

I live on coffee – I don’t notice any effects on my energy levels one way or the other to be honest. I just love the taste (not of decaf though…eew).

Sometimes I just have “one of those days” where nothing seems to go right or makes me feel happy. I have learned that that is normal and that there is always a new day to tackle when I wake up the next morning. This philosophy seems to help me a bit. I do, however, find that I am definitely more snacky, cranky, and less happy on days when I am more sleep-deprived. Therefore, sleep = good! :)

The Monday blues… who does not know about that? Luckily I am too busy at the moment to have the blues, but I can truly relate to the coffee issue. Always when the afternoon low hits me and I finally realize that 6 hours of sleep might not have been quite enough, I try to chase it away with some hot damping coffee (I am also getting cold when I am tired). After a cup I will be able to study, but I am not concentrated and efficient and will end up in bed way earlier than supposed to. So, I should probably give the afternoon-nap another chance ;)

I’m so relieved the Ghiradelli bar arrived just in time to work a little magic on Monday. ;) When I’m feeling tired or cranky, I *always* turn to chocolate first. A nap and a cup of coffee may be better life choices, but a good piece of salty dark never lets me down. It’s a cheap quick fix…and hey, I can’t complain about the antioxidant punch either. :)

Sleep is a huge mood determinant for me, too. If I get less than six hours, every facet of my life is affected! Do I become snackish? You bet! However, on those days, I try to give myself a pass, and enjoy the ride as much as possible. Funky days make the not-so-funky days even more wonderful, and I sure hope that was the case for you today! <3

Oh my gosh, my mood is SO dependent on the amount (or sometimes just the quality) of sleep that I get the night before…ESPECIALLY working night shift! And I totally hear ya on the crazy cravings…it’s like our bodies are revolting against us for depriving it of something we take for granted all too often. I don’t really do much coffee anymore, but I do remember hitting that point of “diminishing returns” with the java on those particularly sleep-deprived, I’m-on-my-sixth-shot-of-espresso-why-is-nothing-happening days! haha

Glad to see the nap helped you out! And even if the pinning didn’t quite do the trick for ya at the time, I gotta say I’m glad you shared…I about lost it with that last one! BACON!! Bahaha!

Afternoon coffee ALWAYS makes me more sleep, especially when I drink it and I’m just sitting at home. It’s like hot milk before bed time…puts me riiiighhttt to sleep.

Gah! You know what? The milk definitely might have something to do with it. My mom always played that nasty trick on me when I was younger, so maybe that’s the case now too. But I don’t want to give up my capps :( I do find that drinking water helps though.

Absolutely spot on!

Lack of sleep drives me crazy – I basically feel miserable, cranky, moody, and I don’t even know what and why I’m fussy about – I just am.

I think everyone’s bound to reach for snacks, sugary food to perk their brains when feeling sleepy – it works – perhaps for that 10, 15 minutes, but after a while, we will still crash anyway – best to just: SLEEP.

Work get done more efficiently and the emotion is much more stable. Then the healthy cycle continues and we’re happy :)

Oh my gosh I absolutely crave sweet, carby foods when I’m sleep-deprived. It’s something I realized way back in college when my sleep went down and sugar cravings sky-rocketed. Interesting (but logical) connection! Every single thing you mentioned is something I’ve tried to use to help cheer me up before. Make-up? It helps…sometimes. Chocolate? Always helps…but only temporarily. Hanging out on the computer just makes me groggier. And exercise simply doesn’t happen on drowsy days! It’s Wednesday now so hopefully you’re feeling much much better :)
