. a marvelously strange monday .

by Amanda @ .running with spoons. on November 26, 2012

Hey guys! How’s the start of your week looking?

After taking Sunday off from pretty much everything computer related, it definitely feels good to get back into the swing of things. I have to admit, though… today has not been the kind of Monday that I’m used to. It all started first thing in the morning…

I actually managed to sleep in past 7 AM. I usually wake up anywhere from 5:40-6:30, so seeing a 7 staring back at me was quite the shock – I honestly can’t even remember the last time that’s happened. Huh. Weird 😯 But I’ll take it!

And if that wasn’t enough (seriously, sleeping in alone is pretty epic around these parts), my eating habits decided to follow suit and do all sorts of strange things. You know how I’m always complaining that my appetite seems to be insatiable on Mondays? Well, that couldn’t have been further from the truth today. I woke up [late] without any desire to eat, and after forcing down [a nevertheless delicious] breakfast…

Plain Greek yogurt – banana – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – homemade applesauce – almond butter

… I didn’t really end up eating again until around 2 PM…

Grilled cheese and ham on whole wheat toast – Random veggies

Six [conscious] hours without food? Whaaaaaat? That’s definitely something that never happens – I can usually last 3 at most. Maybe those fries turned to concrete in my belly or something, because not only was I not hungry, I was extremely full. Oh stomach woes, how nice of you to visit yet again. Sigh. I think it might be time to reevaluate the old diet and make some changes – feeling this way is kind of unpleasant to say the least.

BUT! Other than that, things have been pretty marvelous around here. The weekend was pretty awesome and filled with friends, family, the boy, and Pi (which is definitely worth seeing, by the way)…

… and I even managed to come across a few new-to-me grocery finds that made me smile…

Because I really needed more tea and watermelon in my life, right? But I definitely needed this in my life…

Seriously, do you know how hard it is to find a peanut-free Advent calendar? I’ve had to resort to making my own for the past few years, so when I saw the little peanut-free sign on a calendar that features one of my favorite classic Christmas movies, I may have squealed just a little. No shame.

I may also have been tempted to dig in right away, buttttttt then I kind of remembered that would defeat the entire purpose. Pft. Oh well. At least December (and Christmas decorating!!!!) is right around the corner 😀

. – . – . – .

Do you eat when you think you should, even though you’re not hungry?
Do you buy an Advent calendar?
Have you started decorating for Christmas yet?

I have a bad habit of thinking I “need” to eat even though I’m full. It’s something I’m working on, and it definitely gets worse during holidays. I like having a regimented schedule and it’s hard when everything gets thrown off. I ALWAYS get an advent calendar. They’re so fun!! I need to try those shark gummies :)

2 Devon @ Health in Equilibrium November 26, 2012 at 3:43 pm

Now that I’m working on increasing my intake I sometimes eat when I’m not hungry, especially if it gets to nighttime and I don’t think I’ve eaten enough. It totally throws me off when I’m NOT hungry though, given that I’m ALWAYS hungry, so I just assume that my body must be confused 😛 That Banana Cinnamon tea os the bomb by the way! Oh, and I gave you another shout out in my post today (you’d think I were developing some kind of blogger crush on you) 😛

3 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 26, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Having no appetite completely throws me off as well… I think I like it even less than the days where I can’t seem to satisfy my hunger.

4 Miss Polkadot November 26, 2012 at 4:28 pm

Nobody should have to go without an Advent calendar so I’m glad you found one that suits your needs! That being said I might have to get one for myself, too.

Seeing as I – at least the healthy part of me – want to gain weight I’m trying to eat even if I’m not hungry and reach a certain calorie minimum every day. While I rarely ever am not hungry it can be tough to eat on those days when I’m already feeling overly stuffed.

Oh, and there’s never enough tea or watermelon in one’s life. In case you do feel like you had too much, though, just mail it to me :D.

5 kris November 26, 2012 at 5:13 pm

yay for finding a peanut free advent calendar! – i saw a kinder egg advent calendar the other day that i kind of reeally wanted. but alas i didn’t make the purchase. and now i kind of regret it…

i have a habit of mistaking boredom and thirst for hunger. It’s really rare that I can last 6 hours between meals, but when i do, i’m always amazed.

And your new purchases look delish! -especially the chai!

6 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 26, 2012 at 8:58 pm

I think I came across that kinder calendar too – I would have definitely picked it up but I think it had traces of nuts. Go back and get it! I’ll live vicariously through you 😀

7 Olivia @ Life As Liv November 26, 2012 at 5:17 pm

I do sometimes eat even when I’m not hungry, but only if I know I’m going to be without food for a while. So, if I know I’m about to be in class for three hours, I’ll eat something before, even if I’m not hungry. I’m trying to change this habits in my journey to being a more intuitive eater, but it’s a learning process for sure. Maybe it’s just an off day for you eating wise. I hope tomorrow has more eating normalcy!

8 Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale November 26, 2012 at 5:23 pm

I’m so confused by my brain hunger and body hunger right now. Too frustrating. However, I know that when I get back on track, they’ll align again. For now, I have zero appetite, so eating on a schedule is key. Definitely sticking to it as best I can!!
As for your weird insatiable rounds of hunger … I find that your body needs a boost sometimes, and that’s when you get cravings. But once you get that over-and-above usual eating boost that it needs, it’s happy running on its normal fuel for a while. Not sure what causes those depletions overall, they seem random to me at least, but I find that if I actually go and eat over-and-above, for the next little bit, my insatiable appetite disappears and regular routine returns. A bagel is usually my go-to in that case, you rocked it with the fries, for sure!!

9 Brittany @ Delights and Delectables November 26, 2012 at 5:31 pm

I always eat even though I’m not hungry. I’m so bad at that!!! I’m going to decorate this weekend. This week at work is going to be brutal!

10 Matt @ The Athlete's Plate November 26, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Mmm grilled cheese :)

11 Alexandra November 26, 2012 at 6:05 pm

AHHH I’m so jealous you got to see Life of Pi!!!! I was gonna see it over Thanksgiving break, but our local theater only had showings super late at night or when we had plans 😛 Was is amazing?! I’m dying haha :)
I honestly don’t want to say goodbye to Thanksgiving yet, so I’m holding off Christmas decorating until later haha We did put up lights while I was home though! Man I just can’t wait for all the festivities to begin!

12 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 26, 2012 at 9:00 pm

It was pretty amazing! It stayed pretty close to the book, which was nice, and we saw it in 3D so it was just gorgeous to watch.

13 Sara @ Nourish and Flourish November 26, 2012 at 6:29 pm

I’d completely forgotten about buying an advent calendar until reading this post! The 25 days before Christmas are in no way complete without a dose of holiday-themed-shaped chocolate. I’m so happy that you get to participate this year! (And I’m slightly jealous of the Rudolph theme; mine is usually just an overly-blushed Santa Clause or something). 😉

I’m lusting over the banana cinnamon spice tea! Please let me know what you think! Which reminds me…I’m planning a Target run next weekend, and will be searching for Candycane Lane. No luck in grocery stores yet, but my fingers are crossed for Target success.

In regards to eating when I’m not hungry: yep, I do it! If I don’t, I’ll get ravenous later, and that never ends well. If I’m really not feeling like eating, I’ll scale back my portions and/or try to think about something that sounds appealing. Sometimes this means I eat frozen yogurt for breakfast. :)

14 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 26, 2012 at 9:03 pm

The banana tea is -amazing-! It has a subtle banana flavor that really reminds me of the banana bread tea from David’s Tea. And EEEeeEE! You bet that I’ll be keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that you find the Sugar Cookie tea!

15 Sara @ Nourish and Flourish November 26, 2012 at 6:30 pm

Ahhh…I didn’t mean Candycane Lane! Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride!

16 Ashley November 26, 2012 at 7:12 pm

IHi Sara, you’re in the DC area, right? (I read your blog, I promise I’m not a stalker!) Have you looked for the tea in Wegmans? That’s where I found mine, here in Northern VA.. it’s so yummy and I’m not even a tea drinker! I prefer my hot cocoa, but this stuff is gooood!

17 Zia November 26, 2012 at 6:36 pm

sleeping in- OMG so jealous! I usually wake up around 430 xD

and haha, I have the opposite food problem. I usually think, oh, it’s lunchtime so I should eat, whether or not I’m hungry… :/ your breakfast looked superrr good though!

18 Sam @ Better With Sprinkles November 26, 2012 at 6:39 pm

Banana Cinnamon Spice tea? I’ve fallen off the tea bandwagon lately, that would get me jumping right back on there. :-p

I love advent calenders! Every year without fail, my mom buys them for me (and my brother + our significant others). My brother always eats it all at once – such a fail! Of course, she had them waiting when I came down yesterday. So happy you found a peanut free one, everyone should have an advent calender come December :-p

I try to just follow my hunger cues when it comes to when to eat, but if it’s been multiple hours without food (like 4-5) I assume my stomach’s just asleep and I eat something anyways. :-)

19 lindsay November 26, 2012 at 6:57 pm

youre like me! i can’t sleep pass 5:30. Coffee calls me. haha. Oh and i want to see pi!!

20 fruityrunner November 27, 2012 at 1:04 am

Hihi, nice to hear that other people also have that “problem”. Sometimes, especially on the weekends, I really wish I could sleep as long as everyone else…:-/

21 Alex @ therunwithin November 26, 2012 at 7:20 pm

whoa can I have some of those fun bites? I mean those look right up my alley. Mondays for me equal stress, long days and certainly hunger levels up. Hope you have a good night.

22 Caitlin November 26, 2012 at 7:24 pm

I am now craving a grilled cheese. This hasn’t happened in ages…i must do something about this sometime this week! On the rare, rare occasions when I’m not too hungry at my usual time, I still try to make myself eat something so that I don’t catch myself out and suddenly starving with no food (not a pretty sight i assure you). Advent calendars are one of my favorite things of the holiday season…and we decorated for Christmas on Thanksgiving night…one of my favorite traditions :)

23 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 26, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Awwr! I love those kind of traditions! Our Thanksgiving was last month and I figure that October is kind of early to be decorating for Christmas so I usually wait until the first weekend of December to put my tree up.

24 Caitlin November 27, 2012 at 3:43 am

It definitely makes Thanksgiving more special for me, since I always look forward to the evening 😉 Are you decorating this weekend???

25 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 27, 2012 at 9:06 am

Definitely! I can’t wait 😀

26 Caitlin November 27, 2012 at 9:14 am

Yay!!! So excited for you :)

27 Hollie November 26, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Sometimes a break from the computer is needed. I try and deplug once or twice a week and I always just feel much more relaxed! Glad you could sleep in past 7am. Boy do I understand that. I can’t sleep in that late either!

28 Irina @ Chocolatea Time November 26, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Sorry to hear about your stomach woes :( I always get bummed out when I don’t have an appetite (especially in the mornings because I love breakfast), eating is so much fun! I actually have never owned an advent calendar but am tempted to buy/make one this year! The idea behind it is really special – a treat a day (or more 😉 ) to remind yourself to appreciate every day.

29 Kate November 26, 2012 at 8:26 pm

EEEE a peanut free advent calendar? I need this in my life! I need to start trolling around the stores for one, I honestly haven’t had a chocolate filled one in AGES (ok once in college, my roommate and I made one with mini airplane bottles of liquor in each one….it only lasted through one sorority party…fail…). Must happen. I too have those random days where I’m just not hungry. When I’m training, I make myself eat since running does tend to suppress the appetite but without eating you can’t recover. But if I’m not doing any serious training, and esp. if I feel sick, then I just don’t. Sometimes though, I eat a meal when I’m not really hungry, but then I get super hungry afterward?? Weird?? Maybe it’s like my metabolism needs a little slap in the face wakeup sometimes hah. Anyway. That grilled cheese looks AMAZING!!

30 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 26, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Haha that actually happens to me all the time! I think I’m not hungry, and then I grab a little taste of something and it’s like opening up the flood gates and suddenly I’m ravenous. Weird, and kind of annoying.

31 Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl November 26, 2012 at 9:13 pm

OMG I love those Advent calendars! My aunt used to buy me one every year. I secretly wish that she still did 😉 .

My eating habits were also quite strange today…breakfast at 10, lunch at 2:15, and dinner at 7:15 with only one snack in between. So strange for me because I am definitely a major snacker!

32 Jessie November 26, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Since I’m working on upping my calorie intake and gaining weight, I plan out my meals the day before, and eat at the times I schedule them. I know that may sound a bit ridiculous to some, but it works for me & it’s what I need to do at the moment.

I’m sorry your breakfast wasn’t too wonderful since you weren’t very hungry, but I personally think it looks quite delicious :) :)

33 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 27, 2012 at 12:19 pm

That doesn’t sound ridiculous at all, hun! I had to do the same thing when I was going through the process of gaining weight and it helped out a lot.

34 Khushboo November 26, 2012 at 10:29 pm

Ah I hate when my appetite is off! That’s exactly what happened to me yesterday but I think it was just a combo of my sleep cycle being out of whack, eating & drinking nonstop during the weekend and just being totally of routine. Rather than fight it, I just went with it and ate as and when I felt hungry! Luckily normality has returned and my appetite is in full swing today! That vanilla bean chai looks SO good…as much as I adore my coffee, chai is like a hug in a mug! Although speaking of coffee, I’ve developed an addiction to Starbucks’ cappuccinos which I am sure you understand :)

35 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 27, 2012 at 12:20 pm

All too well, girl… aaaaaall too well. It’s only lunch time and I’m counting down the hours (which are going painfully slow) until I can enjoy my cup of bliss.

36 Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie November 26, 2012 at 10:32 pm

I’ve actually never seen or had a chocolate-filled Advent calendar. My family’s had a few ornament-filled calendars for a long time though and I’ve always had fun putting up a different little ornament on the tree each day of December!

I have really weird eating days sometimes too that throw me off. Sometimes I’ll get full really fast and sometimes I’m still hungry after eating a meal. And usually I start getting really hungry when I’m out somewhere with no food packed. I think I should start bringing along a bunch of snacks in my purse for those hunger emergencies!

37 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table November 26, 2012 at 10:42 pm

I have those not hungry days too… but then the next day I’m back to eating my weight in food. Hope your appetite returns soon!

Good to know about Pi – I think I’ll check that out this weekend.

38 Lucie November 26, 2012 at 11:48 pm

Same here! My appetite sometimes just walks away. I am SO confised when that happens. I try to eat intuitively, but I am not there yet. So I eat despote being hungry….. I need to go and shop for calendars! So cute!!

39 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance November 27, 2012 at 3:33 am

Will has been DYING to drag me to Life of Pi! I think we’re going to see it sometime this week to see it in IMAX, which will be awesome in 3d glasses!

And as far as the eating question, it really depends. I try my best to “eat intuitively”, but I also think it’s important to insist on at LEAST three meals a day. Just based on my history with food and the overanalyzation of it– I think it’s important to have at least that little of a rule guide. If I’m truly not hungry for a meal and it’s been a while since I’ve eaten, I’ll just try to eat something smaller to keep the mojo flowing.

40 Miz November 27, 2012 at 3:59 am

Im officially old :-) and an early riser needed or not.

41 Laura November 27, 2012 at 4:28 am

Anddddd once again, your posts are scarily relevant.

I woke up about 20 minutes ago with a feeling of bloat and lack of hunger. Yet, in about 30 minutes, I’ll need to eat breakfast since I’m running out the door for an appointment followed by work. And yes, I’ll be eating breakfast regardless. In fact, I usually do that anyways, if a meal time comes and is about to “go” I make sure I eat SOMETHING in order to assure I’m getting fuel and not tempting ED into thinking it’s okay to skip meals. Plus, I know if I skip a meal I’ll become RAVENOUS later, so I would rather just eat something when I’m not hungry.

HOWEVER about 98% of the time I’m ALWAYS hungry for my meal/snack. And 6 hours without eating is UNHEARD of in there parts! I think the only time that EVER happens is if I’m busy with something else, or napping 😉 I could never stay home and just not eat a snack. Food Food Food!

42 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 27, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Definitely a good idea to make sure that you’re still eating, especially if you’re running out the door. I feel okay putting my meals off for a bit if I’ll be home and know that food will be around, but if I’m about to leave and don’t know when my next meal will be? Yeah, no.

43 Shreya @ rushofendorphins November 27, 2012 at 5:05 am

Dear fellow watermelon-addict, great read as usual 😉

I usually get pretty hungry every few hours, and *knock on wood* I haven’t had a day where I couldn’t find my appetite in quite a while… I think I’d still eat though! Because right now I’m afraid that if I a miss snack/meal it would lead to another missed one the next day…

And girl, what is an advent calendar? It looks so interesting!

44 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 27, 2012 at 12:34 pm

An advent calendar is a skinny little box type thing that has 25 compartments for each of the days from Dec 1 to the 25th. Each compartment usually has some type of chocolate or candy inside, and you eat one every day while you countdown to Christmas. It’s kind of all sorts of wonderful 😀

45 Katie November 27, 2012 at 5:30 am

YAY for an advent calendar! YES we have one! I get ours at Trader Joe’s! Can’t wait to start using it, Anthony loves it!

I hope you have a great week love! <3

46 Laura Agar Wilson (@keephealthstyle) November 27, 2012 at 5:31 am

We have just started to decorate our office for Christmas but I can’t wait to get my tree! I very rarely don’t feel hungry, but when I don’t then I do try and go with the flow as best possible unless I know I need that food for energy if I know I’m going to be out and about / exercising etc

47 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin November 27, 2012 at 5:51 am

I’m so jealous you slept in so late! I usually wake up anywhere from 5-6:30, and I hate it! I miss the days in high school when I could sleep in til 8 or 9.

Some days I have no appetite too and it totally weirds me out. I always eat anyways though because I like food too much haha. 😛

Agh I’ve had the same problem with finding nut-free advent calendars! Some years we could find them and other years not. So when we can’t find them my grandma actually makes me homemade ones with mini chocolate bars or Hershey’s kisses or something. She actually did that for me last year – it was so cute!

48 Christina November 27, 2012 at 7:52 am

I definitely have times where I’m really not hungry, but I make myself eat because I think I ‘should’ eat – I think this has grown as a reaction to an ED, because I’m constantly making sure that I’m eating enough and not trying to skip meals or anything.

We have a handmade advent calendar that a friend gave me a few years ago – it’s from Liberty and I absolutely love it. Every year I make up tiny parcels of sweets for my other half to open each day, and this year I’m going to include a little love note everyday.

We’re going to decorate on Sunday 2nd December – we’re away on the 1st – and I can’t wait!!

49 Liz (formerly VeggieGirl) November 27, 2012 at 11:35 am

I was a little under the weather this weekend, so I had the same loss of appetite :( But I still eat so that I don’t fall back into restrictive habits.

I have an advent calendar too!! Love them 😀

50 Kat November 27, 2012 at 11:35 am

Ninja and I started our decorating last night, and I am feeling quite festive!! Ive got a few more touches plus some DIY things to do, but other than that our house is officially in the holiday season!

51 Brittany November 27, 2012 at 11:49 am

The only times I eat when I am not hungry is before a run. That may be the night before a run, or a few hours before a run (I mean like a run that’s over 6miles.) Other than that I try to listen to my body. Unless it’s chocolate, then my morals just completely fly out the window! 😉

52 Allison @ Life's a Bowl November 27, 2012 at 11:52 am

Dude, I slept in until 7AM yesterday too… But was back up at 4AM this morning. I gotta say, yesterday’s sleeping in was thoroughly enjoyed :) And of course I made myself sweet breakfasts both days, despite being out of baking soda [so no pancakes, lame]- bring on the oats and waffles… Savory? No way!

I’m planning to do some Christmas decorating this weekend! There’s nothing quite like the holiday spirit… Not sure what we’ll do about the tree situation though since Ryan will be a gimp through January. Need to make some manly, truck-driving friends 😉

53 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 27, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Haha I was back to waking up bright and early this morning too – very disappointing. But at least there’s a sweet, sweet breakfast to look forward to, right? Sometimes I swear the only thing that gets my butt out of bed is the promise of coffee and breakfast.

54 Anna @AnnaTheApple November 27, 2012 at 1:33 pm

I guess it depends what you’re doing in the day. If I have to go to work then I’ll make sure I have breakfast regardless as I won’t eat until lunch otherwise. But at the weekend I’ll just leave it until I’m hungry, and this can be like 10am so it pushes back lunch but it’s the weekend so it doesn’t really matter! I just go with the flow then.
Got my Cadburys advent calander sorted woohoo! And decorating this weekend. We don’t do it until the first weekend of December.

55 Lisa November 27, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Oh my goodness. Banana cinnamon spice tea, sounds insane! And I mean that in the best way possible. I’m always so shocked if I sleep in past 6 or 7. Definitely an early riser! Appetites are such odd things. Sometimes I’m starving and the next week I don’t even want to look at food. I hope your appetite returns soon, because it’s kind of no fun to not be hungry ha. Glad you picked up an advent calendar! It’s so cute, maybe too cute to eat 😉

56 Emma November 29, 2012 at 4:21 am

All that food looks delish! What bread did you use for your sandwich?

57 Amanda @ .running with spoons. November 29, 2012 at 8:54 am

I used Wonderbread 100% whole wheat.
