. a soft spot for cereal .

by Amanda @ .running with spoons. on August 30, 2011

It’s no secret that I love my oatmeal…

Eggy bananafied steel cut oats with cottage cheese…

… and a dollop of almond butter…

Mmm mmm good.

And while we’ve been going steady for several years now, and I can’t see our love affair ending anytime soon, I also can’t deny that I have a huge soft spot in my heart for cereal…

Plain Greek yogurt mixed with coconut milk, banana, Kashi Honey Sunshine.

Me and cereal go way back – childhood sweethearts, if you will. I remember spending countless Saturday mornings watching cartoons with a big bowl of cereal in front of me, looking forward to slurping up that last bit of sugary, and sometimes colorful, milk at the bottom of the bowl.

Back then, our relationship was rather playful. Lucky Charms. Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Fruit Loops. Cap’n Crunch. Sweet and fun was the name of the game.

Then things started to get more serious. Raisin Bran. Mini Wheats. Cheerios. Fiber One. We were taking our relationship to a whole new level.

  And then we broke up.

Just like that, our romance was over. One day I just up and decided that cereal wasn’t worth my time anymore, and it was at that point that I started cozying up to other things… bigger and better things…

This separation lasted for several years, and while I initially thought I was happy, and tried to convince myself that I didn’t miss my beloved beau, the truth was that my heart ached for him.

His sweet crunch. The way he’d get perfectly soggy in milk. The comfort he would provide me with. I began to realize that he was irreplaceable.

So I went back to him, and slowly our relationship began to mend. But it could never be the same as it was. No. Those days were over. We needed to start out fresh, take a different approach.

So we tried new things…

… got a little more comfortable and adventurous…

… and I’d like to think that we’re currently in a pretty good [read: tasty] place…

I may never go back to being a cereal-for-breakfast kind of girl, but I’m definitely a must-have-cereal-everyday kind of girl. It’s become my snack of choice as of late, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Weetabix soaked in almond milk, with almond butter and wild blueberries.

. – . – . – .

Breakfast: cereal or oatmeal?… or… neither?

What’s your current favorite cereal? What about when you were a kid?

Cereal cereal cereal!!! :) :) Hehe I think I’m the biggest cereal lover in the bloggie world :P
My fave when I was a kid was just boring Rice Krispies for the whole ‘snap, crackle and pop; sound going on but I was never allowed any of the sugary cereals, otherwise they would have been my favorites for sure! I occasionally had Frosties at my friends’ houses and I loved them!!
My fave cereal at the moment..honestly can’t pick between Kashi GoLean for breakfast but for snacking, definitely Puffins!! YUM!! <3
And ummm can I have your cereal stash please?! :)

I was hardly ever allowed to have sugary cereals either… only once in a while for special treats, but I looooooved them and begged every time I was in the store with Mom :D I liked Rice Crispies too, but mostly in Rice Crispy snacks. Omigosh addiction.

In the winter I enjoy a good bowl of oats for breakfast, during the summer my weapon of choice are smoothies. I do eat cereal for snacks almost everyday. My latest obsession pb puffins mmmmmmm… when I was younger my favourites were Harvest Crunch and Raisin Bran (I was a weird kid lol)

I’m not a huge cereal person. I got puffins for the first time over a week ago, and I’ve still probably only had two servings from the box. I do like them, I just don’t get the craving for them that often. When I was a kid I loved cheerios. When I was in grade 9-10 and super active I would have like 3 bowls a night after dinner, I loved them that much!

6 Amanda @ Running with Spoons August 30, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Remember frosted Cheerios? I think I went through an entire box of those in one day once, and then I couldn’t look at Cheerios for like half a year lol. But I used to love having cereal for dinner.

I love both cereal and oatmeal, but right now I’m on a cereal bender. I like Nature’s Path Mesa Sunrise flakes because they’re not too sweet and they’re gluten-free, and I mix them with Enjoy Life granola…which you show in this post! So, so good. I’ve just been craving that sweet crunch every morning, but eventually I’m sure oatmeal will make a comeback. If you keep making your breakfasts look so damn delicious, it might be sooner than I think!

I have been trying to switch my breakfasts up lately– and as much as I *do* enjoy cereal, the packaging is not worth it. But when I was a kid, my mom would buy rice puffs for my sister and (so my at-the-time four year old sister wouldn’t wake them at an ungodly hour saying she was hungry). She an dI could polish off a whole bag in one morning, easy! I like hot cereal though (actually, I love it!)! Oatmeal I not as big of fan of (I love almond butter though. Hopefully saying that redeems me on the oatmeal remark :D )

Because of my recently discovered mild gluten intolerance, i’m more of a big bowl o’fruit type a gal. maybe with a splash of almond milk and cinnamon. It’s just a bit easier. and not to mention refreshing.
Though as a kiddo I was all about me some Cap’n Crunch.

I totally am the same way, sometimes I find it very hard to have cereal as my breakfast because i sure do love my oats, but i almost always have cereal at some point during the day. whether its on top of my greek yogurt messes or sometimes i just grab a handful of puffins to tide me over until my next meal.

although ever since i’ve discovered kefir, cereal mix match messes have made more appearances as my main breakfast.

but if i had to choose. pssh. oatmeal. come on ;)

my favorite cereal right now is cinnamon puffins, although cascadian farms maple crunch is a very close second!

I used to be a cereal MONSTER! It was all I would eat for breakfast, and during the not so healthy times in my life I would eat cereal for breakfast, lunch , and dinner, not good I know, but I am past that ; )

I love PB Puffins, Cinnamon, and the PB and Chocolate Puffins! I also like Fiber one ( haha ) Kashi Honey toasted hearts, honey sunshine, and their berry bliss one! So many good cereals!

I love Lucky charms, I still do now, I saw someone tweet about lucky charms today, and now saw it on here, I need a box in my life asap!

Love you!

THanks for the AMAZING comment today! So glad we both are in better places now!

AND if I send your package off Monday, is it still ok to send to your parents address?!

HAHA! The face next to ‘neither’!

Oatmeal oatmeal! Well, you know me ;) I, too, enjoy cereal. A lot. It just doesn’t seem to satisfy me like oats! I prefer my cereal as a crunchy addition to other foods rather than on its own. A topping, per-say. But it’s also mighty delicious as a side! It’s been a long time since I’ve had it on its own as a meal. Eeep!

I, too, used to love sugar-y cereals. My mom didn’t like having anything ‘too’ sugar-y around, though. I remember getting all excited when my dad came home from grocery shopping (dad’s NEVER done much of the shopping at our house, he just plain doesn’t like it and can never remember to get everything. Hah!) because he’d always bring home cereals my mom normally wouldn’t buy. Like cocoa puffs and OHMIGOSH Oreo O’s! Loved those.

My current favorite… hm. I suppose Puffins. I haven’t been keeping much other than that around lately… though I can appreciate all types! Nomnomnom. I love shredded wheat baskets and I’m a big fan of all types of granola. I just picked up some fiber twigs (not Fiber One, though) at the store today and I can’t waaaiiit to try them! I bet they’ll be so crunchy! Nomnomnomnomnomnom. So perfect for topping. Nom.

Maaaaan I remember eating BOWL after BOWL after BOWL of cereal as a kid. It was pretty crazy… Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Fruity Pebbles. Yuuummmmmm.

Muahahaha.

Haha it was the same way with my mom vs. my dad. He’d always buy the good kind of cereal because it’s what he wanted to eat himself. I blame him for my addiction to Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I only recently started eating cereal again. Like you, it was off-limits during the depths of my ED. Even now I won’t have a full bowl, just a little here and there as a snack.

I’ve never been a sugary cereal fan. As a kid, my favorite was regular Cheerios or Corn Chex. And right now I’m in love with TJ Bran Flakes. I do miss Kashi, but it’s a little pricey, so I have to wait until it goes on sale.

My dad is the king of cereals–at any one time he has at least 10 boxes at his house. He always feels compelled to tell me if he has a shortage (less than 8 boxes). :)

The Kashi with protein is THE BOMB. I can’t get over how much protein they pack into that little baby without the added density, but I remember being able to eat it by the bowl-full before my wheat allergy came along. No bueno :(

And I kind of have a similar story with cereals (and oats). I lived off of Reeses Peanut Butter Puffs as a child, then decided that I wasn’t going to eat carbs ever, then decided to take the healthier whole grain route.
By the looks of it, both of us were led in the right direction ;)

For breakfast, I’m partial to oatmeal – like you, I now consider cereal to be a better snack.

My current favourite is Cinnamon Puffins (I have eaten half a box today…) and I’m currently psyching myself up to spend a fortune on Kashi Honey Sunshine. They’re pretty expensive here, but they look delicious! When I was a kid, which wasn’t actually that long ago, I went for sugary, marshmallowy cereals: Alphabits, Lucky Charms, and Honeycomb were my favourites. That said, I really like Shredded Wheat too – topped with honey, it’s very tasty!

I’ve been wanting to pick up some of that Dorset cereal every time I see it in the stores, but I’m still a little bit weary of trying nuts other than almonds because of my allergies :( And I have to admit that when it comes to cereals, I prefer the lighter, airy-er kind. Muesli and granola is a bit too dense for my liking.

Both. Like today. A tablespoon of uncooked rolled oats, some raisins, bran flakes and ice cold milk. My favorite breakfast for insanely hot mornings.

At the moment bran flakes are my number one because they don’t have a wide variety of good cereal on this side of the earth. As a kid… well… Back then the kids in socialistic countries didn’t know the meaning of the word cereal :D .

I am not into cereal at all – never eat it or buy it, and was never really big on it as a kid either. Actually I didn’t even like breakfast as a kid, mum forced me to have a hot Milo (do you guys have Milo?) so I didt starve by mid morning! I don’t know if it’s an Australian thing, we still have cereal but it doesn’t seem to be such a craze here like it is in America/Canada. Seems more likely a typical Australian would have toast with butter and vegemite for breakfast. For me my favorite breakfasts are oats (I love all the toppings to put on!) eggs and toast or toast with vegemite! And my favorite snacks would have to be chocolate, yoghurt, muesli bars and muffins.

As a kid I was OBSESSED with Reese’s and Cocoa Pebbles. Anything that was chocolate and loaded with sugar was fine by me. Now those are all too sweet and I prefer any Kashi, Barbara’s or Cheerios!

I love this post. I tend to have oatmeal more often because it fills me up much more then cereal. I used to LOVE sweet and sugary cereals like Lucky CHarms and had a huge love for Captain Crunch. I have always enjoyed a bowl of cherrios with a sliced banana. Occasionally, I will still buy a box of cereal – but not very often.

As a kid, Corn Flakes and Life were staples every single day of my life, my mom never bought me Lucky Charms and such, so I always craved those others two. Oh but Lord have mercy, then I discovered Kashi (Strawberry Fields and the original Crunch especially) and I died…and then I died more recently when I discovered puffins. They’re the BEST!! :D

I actually didn’t eat too much cereal growing up, but the ones I remember eating the most are fruit loops, cinnamon toast crunch, french toast crunch (i don’t think that one exists anymore), and reese’s puffs. Then I just stopped eating it completely for YEARS. I actually just started eating cereal again about a year and a half ago. And I don’t think I can ever quit again! i’ve always loved kashi but lately i’m really into Cascadian Farms cereals. they are very simple, organic, and TASTEY. i’m currently hooked on their multi-grain squares (think chex, only wayyy better & heartier) and their maple brown-sugar granola (just slightly sweet) mmm! as a kid my favorites were apple jacks (wtf?) and great grains fruit & nuts (which i used to steal from my mommy & still enjoy)

No, I keep mine in the cupboard. I tend to go through them so fast that I figure they can last un-refrigerated. And I’m pretty sure that the brand I use doesn’t say anywhere on it that it requires refrigeration. I hope not, because I don’t like hard/tough nut butter!

I tried a toasted almond cereal that was similar to puffins and they were awesome! When I was little I always gravitated towards healthier stuff. Also just munching on handfuls of granola during the day, in fruit bowls, on yogurt messes. Heck, you will see it in my WIAW post, but I just ate my rice cakes with granola on top. (new love!!)
I was the same as you and I ‘banned’ myself from cereal for a while back them. *phew* thank goodness I snapped out of that one.

Oh cereal. The things we have been through together. There was a time when we had a normal relationship. Then ED came along and made me break up with him for many years. In the hospital, we were forced back together and when I got home, I used to lovingly choose from a multitude I could now eat again in my cupboards. That sly ED snuck back in though, and convinced me that carbs were awful, even telling me that veggies belonged at breakfast (sweet potatoes, yes, broccoli? no). I’m only working my way back to mr. cereal again. More in the form of oatmeal, but occasionally in the form of cereal himself. Mr. Granola is next to be conquered. This post reminds me about the goodness of just eating what I want and feeling satisfied. Love it all
Current favourite? I’m loving on oat bran and kashi golean.

Cereal! but not for breakfast, only a snack. I have at least two bowls of cereal after dinner without fail :) But oatmeal is a fabulous breakfast! I don’t really remember eating cereal as a kid, I think our relationship started when I started going away to camp, I could seriously down like 6 bowls and not even bat an eye. Anything crunchy and light is my kinda thing, and some times I’ll throw some granola in there for more staying power. Question: do you use coconut milk from a carton or the can type? Oh jeez, the can type mixed with yogurt and cereal sounds lush, thanks for the idea now!

 Ice cream, unfortunately, is all gone :( Maybe I’m trying to replace the void in my heart with copious amounts of cereal ;)

love! I’ve never really been a cereal-for-breakfast person, but snacks? bring it on! Lately I’ve discovered chocolate PB puffins… but I used to be a huge sucker for grape nuts. Don’t think I’d ever go back to those, though – not sure how much processed / artificial stuff is in there, and i’m not so sure I want to find out.

67 Sara K August 30, 2011 at 11:35 pm

Cereal all the wayyyyy! As a kid my favourite was grape nuts…had mountains of that stuff every day; now however I’m all about the puffins and the kashi honey sunshine and instead of milk i do kefir, yoghurt, and cinnamon! Mmmmm :)

You kinda just took the words outta my mouth! LOVE cereal…oatmeal will always have my heart where breakfast is concerned but nothing beats a big bowl of cereal and yogurt/milk (or both) as a snack!! Even topping-less, it always hits the spot!

Oats for breaky & cereal for snacks/lunch/dinnner.
At one point in my ed cereal became one of my safest food, but of course the lowest calorie/healthy kind, and a small portion. Not Good.
Current fav = good ol’ cheerios topped with blueberrries and soy.
As a yongin i patricularly enjoyed corn pops, french toast crunch, and honeynut. My parents aloud/bought the sugary stuff :)

Woah, that´s a pretty cool cereal collection :) I used to eat them when I was little, but I haven´t had a bowl of cereal in ages. Probably because there is no variety in cereals here. Just the “kids” cereals – i.e. extra sugary, extra sweet, with a lot of artificial stuff stuffed in them… Nothing for me :( So I am all for oatmeal :)

71 Sarina August 31, 2011 at 12:00 am

Don’t hate on me… but not fussed on cereal at all. Give me oats, all day, every day, any time.
I used to love the sugary ones as a kid too and snacked on them all the time, straight from the box. Frosties (I can’t believe now I was allowed to eat those for breakfast!) and Nutri-grain (do you guys have this one?) were childhood staples. And I remember when on holidays in the US as a child, my parents bought my sister and I Lucky Charms and we just thought they were the best thing! Remembering that marshmellow taste brings back such sweet memories :)

I absolutely LOVE cereal and have ever since I was a kid. I did like you and tried to convince myself I didnt like it anymore. For a while all I ate was puffed wheat unsweetened cereal (cardboard) Now I love honeycomb and the new fiber one honey squares. As a kid I loved Golden Grahams and Coco Puffs!!!

I had an abrupt breakup with cereal as well. Several years passed and I didn’t go anywhere near those cardboard boxes. Then I discovered Fiber One, which seemed like a miracle food to me. Just a half cup left me full for HOURS, and thanks to the Hungry Girl website, I discovered new ways to incorporate it into practically every meal (“breading” for chicken, “croutons” on salad, “flour” in baked goods etc). Talk about fiber overload! In fact, I think my overconsumption of Fiber One played a major role in my GI issues, which were alleviated once I gave up wheat products.

Like you, I rarely eat cereal for breakfast (it doesn’t have the staying power that my typical egg or pancake breakfasts provide!), but find it to be a satisfying midday snack. I enjoy munching on Puffins, Udi’s granola, Kay’s Naturals protein cereal (vanilla almond), and puffed rice/millet.

Favorite cereal when I was young: Anything with lots of sugar! Cinnamon Toast Crunch was a highly anticipated treat, only allowed on annual camping trips. Otherwise the sweetest they came in my house was Life (love!) and Kix. :-)

OMG is it possible to not like either cereal or oatmeal?! The thought upsets me.

My favourite cereal at the moment would have to be…hmmm…wow I don’t know! I know for sure that as a kid my fav was cocoa chex. Cocoa anything really. I rarely ever was allowed to have it because of its sugar content but when I could, the box was gone within a day!

Wow, you and cereal have a very similar relationship to me and cereal….I didn’t know I was being cheated on!!!!! lol :P

I prefer cold cereal – I somehow can’t get myself to like the texture of oatmeal :( but as you are an oatmeal lover, do you have any preparation or add-in tips for me?

My favorites now are Nature’s Path Organic Optimum Slim, Kashi GoLean Honey Almond Crunch, Kashi GoLean, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest, and Total (taste isn’t fantastic, but the iron content is great b/c I hate taking pills). When I was a kid? My parents didn’t ever let me have the really sugary stuff like Lucky Charms or Count Chocula, but I was allllll about the Fruit Loops (Froot Loops?)!

Oatmeal can definitely be kind of nasty if not prepped properly – I can’t stand having it runny. Eugh. My favorite kind of oatmeal is steel-cut, so I cook a serving of that in 1 cup of water/milk and when most of the liquid has been absorbed, I whip in an egg white, let it cook for a while, and then add in some sliced banana. The egg white makes the oats soooo fluffy and cake like. And my favorite toppings are almond butter and pudding ;) But you could always toss some cereal/granola on there for extra crunch.

I’m actually eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast right now! I love cereal + milk every so often, but my favourite breakfasts are definitely oatmeal or cereal + Greek yogurt. I like that I can take longer to enjoy them since if I eat cereal with milk, it gets soggy so quickly so I have to wolf it down!

My favourite cereal is Kashi Honey Almond Flax. I discovered it about 2 years ago and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. :D As a kid I actually really liked fairly healthy cereals like Cheerios and Mini Wheats. Or maybe my parents just brainwashed me into thinking I liked them because they never bought me sugary cereals. :P

As a kid, I literally enjoyed every single sugary cereal that was out! There were no kinds I didn’t like- Cocoa Krispies, Frosted Flakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cinnamon Life, Honey Bunches of Oats, all had special places in my heart :)

Hi Amanda! I love cereal and have it every single morning. I wake up so excited to have my bowl. I realized recently that I hadn’t been eating the healthiest cereals and started an ‘experiment’ to test cereals for taste and nutrition. I am not just trying to blog promote (promise!), but thought you really may enjoy my cereal experiment (http://mylessseriouslife.blogspot.com/2011/07/cereal-experiment.html), which is still in progress. I notice a couple of your Kashi choices are top in my ratings so far! For the most recent results check out the latest post (http://mylessseriouslife.blogspot.com/2011/08/cereal-experiement-fiber-one-frosted.html).

Anyways, I hope you enjoy and I’m am certainly glad that you and cereal are back to being friends. :)

It’s impossible to choose….I love both. I went through a “cereal is bad” phase and never felt like I had any control over cereal if I started on it. I’m in a much better place now and love it all over again, thankfully!

I like anything tbh! I love Weetabix so much I think it’s becoming an obsession!

I love all those granola-type things you tried…they look like perfect oatmeal toppings which, let’s face it, is the best of both worlds!

This is the first time i’ve been to your blog. Question, you mentioned you had ‘eggy’ oats at the beginning of this post. How do you do that?

thats a hard one – I love my oatmeal. In every variation. Sometimes not even with oats but barley, quinoa or water ever just seems right to me.

But when I feel like treating myself with a little bit of guilty childhood memory I would go for cereal. I like those with honeyflavour or the whole wheat ones. Those which I liked as a child, the sugary, colourful, damn unhealthy ones, do not tempt to me any longer.

And weetabix is another one of a kind. I like it when it still has its crunch, or really hot as oatmeal, but if its glibbery cold and soaked – ewwwh, its my worst nightmare…

I have oatmeal for breakfast. I was thinking about trying cereal, but there are two problems. I’m not sure it’ll hold me over for too long and I wake up craving oats every morning :D I do like having cereal everyday though. Especially lately! My favorites have been Kashi crisp, PB Puffins, Cascadian Farm’s cinnamon squares, Weetabix, and Nature’s path pumpkin and almond granola. I love making different combinations. They’re so much more fun than just one cereal!

I will definitely chose oatmeal over cereal for breakfast any day, but I have to say that sometimes after a long day, a bowl of cereal for dinner just hits the spot like nothing else! I used to be a cereal fiend, having it EVERY day for breakfast, but then I found my love for oatmeal and cereal fell to the wayside. I think it wasn’t until I discovered cereal mixing thanks to blogland that I finally decided to give it another go! That and adding protein powder (or my favorite, peanut flour) to the bowl for extra “oomph!” My favorite cereal changes just about as frequently as the weather here in Tennessee (read, A LOT), but right now, I am seriously getting to the obsessive stage in my relationship with Grape Nuts…or as the generic box I buy reads, Crunchy Nuggets! Haha! Love that! My favorite choices growing up though were COMPLETELY different: Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, Frosted Flakes…oh let’s face it, anything that tasted like it was a bowl of sugar with a little cereal added in for crunch! Lol!
