. WIAW … breakfast all day .

January 16, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 80 Comments

So it’s been about a week (okay, 5 days) since I told you guys that I was going to be experimenting with my diet a little bit, and while I would have loved to use today’s WIAW to give you an update on how it’s going, I have to be honest and tell you that… it’s not.ย But hear me out!

These past few days have just been wacky. Even though I’ve more-or-less managed to avoid succumbing to the full-blown plague that seems to be sweeping the nation, I’ve still been battling minor symptoms of it, which unfortunately means that my stomach has been feeling less than ideal – think sporadic bouts of discomfort and nausea. Or actually, don’t think about that… no one likes thoughts like those.

In any case, bulked up mealsย haven’t sounded appealing to me in the least, and because food seems to settle my stomach somewhat, I’ve been snacking like a fiend in an effort to keep any nausea at bay. Not that I’m complaining – you guys know I love my snacking ๐Ÿ˜‰ So, this’ll be another typical 8-snack-a-day WIAW. Hopefully I’ll have some updates for you guys next week (damn bug). But for now, let’s see what we’ve got…

WIAW

As per usual, the day starts with breakfast…

Breakfast Day Cereal

Plain Greek yogurt – banana – nectarine – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – Puffins – roasted almond butter.

Continues with lunchย [breakfast]…

Oatmeal Cookie Smoothie

Cookie Dough Smoothie:

  • ยฝ banana
  • ยผ cup oatmeal
  • 1 tsp. ground flax
  • ยฝ scoop vanilla protein powder
  • ยฝ tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. vanilla flavor
  • 1 Tbsp. almond butter
  • 1 cup milk

And apparently ends with dinnerย [breakfast]…

Buckwheat Breakfast for Dinner

Buckwheat groats cooked in 2% milk and cinnamon – warmed apple – raisins – roasted almond butter.

What can I say? When my stomach feels off, all I want are carbs and fruits – the thought of veggies and savory meals just makes my stomach turn. To my credit, though, Iย did manage to get a least a couple servings of veggies in by snacking on some carrots throughout the day…

Veggie Nibbles

Go me! Buuuuut then I have to go on and admit that the rest of the time I was snacking on things like this…

Fruit and Yogurt Bowl

Plain Greek yogurt mixed with coconut milk – the rest of the banana – blueberries – slivered almonds.

Annie's Bunnies

Annie’s Bunny Grahams.

Watermelon Snacking

Watermelon.

Cappuccino

Starbucks Cappuccino.

Now, this isn’t necessarily representative of the way I eatย everyย day, but on the days where my stomach doesn’t feel the best? It’s all about the carbs, fruits, and yogurts. Did I mention the carbs?

Plain Bread Cravings

Plain toast.

Cinnamon Harvest

Dry Kashi Cinnamon Harvest.

I swear, there’s nothing like dry cereal (or bread) to settle a wonky stomach.ย If I had saltines, I probably would have resorted to those, but alas… saltines are a rarity around these parts, while the cereal is ever-flowing. Thankfully, things are looking pretty good on the stomach-front so far, so hopefully I’ll be able to get back to eating more ‘normal’ foods today. Happy Wednesday!

. – . – . – .

What foods do you end up eating when your stomach is feeling off?
What’s your favorite cereal to eat dry?
Is anyone having breakfast for lunch/dinner today? Or have you recently?

I could eat breakfast foods for every meal and snack daily! I haved had breakfast for dinner recently. But, now I’m thinking tomorrow it’s going to be bisquick pancakes made extra fluffy with good ol maple syrup, sausage and eggs.

Dry toast and cereal are probably the best things to have when your stomach isn’t feeling quite right. Totally acceptable to skip the bulked-up meals too. When I’m sick, the LAST thing I want is veggies, but those bunny grahams look like something I need in my life…

Ugh, hopefully you don’t get the death stomach flu that’s going around. I had it last month and for a few days, and all I ate was toast with mashed avocado, ginger ale, coconut water, and when I finally felt like I could stomach more, some frozen fruit puree. It was brutal!!! It totally ruined Christmas cookie eating season! Fav dry cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I hate when my stomach feels off! I got sick just before Christmas and literally nothing appealed to me so I basically ate applesauce and PB Puffins–not even dry toast made me feel better! And I tried making a green smoothie but that didn’t go down too well either so I’m thinking the next time I get sick, I’ll be stocking up on the applesauce and cereal!

I don’t think I’ve had cereal since I got sick, but my favorite to eat dry is either Udi’s cranberry granola or PB Puffins. Those are like crack!

Whenever my tummy is off I immediately carb load! It’s the only thing that sounds remotely delicious. Carbs and fruit. So, naturally I lean towards all the breakfast items too:) Even though it sucks being sick, I kind of like eating breakfast 3 times per day ha. Super excited because I ordered more of that cinnamon + spice tea and it just arrived today! Feel better beauty!

If eating breakfast all day everyday is wrong, I don’t wanna be right. Total cheese ball right there but no other words are truer than those… I love breakfast 24/7! Always gotta start and end the day on a sweet note ๐Ÿ™‚ When I’m feeling under the weather I usually resort to oats, soup, toast and eggs, or plain pasta with a sprinkle of parm cheese. Fruit and veggies are a no-no, with the exception of bananas. And my fave dry cereal to eat would have to be Kashi Warm Cinnamon Heart to Heart… I cannot keep my hand outta that box!

I’ve heard good things about that cereal, but they don’t sell it up here in Canadaland ๐Ÿ™ I really need to start keeping a running Whole Foods shopping list for whenever I visit the States next…

I oddly like the mini fruit Weetabix dry. The normal, full ones are gross dry but the mini ones are basically glazed in sugar and so so bad…I could eat a whole box.

    Hope you feel better! ๐Ÿ™

Oh dear I hope you feel better. What always makes me feel better is small meals and comfort foods. Seriously whenever I’m sick all I can think about is toast with cinnamon butter or cereal. Maybe sometimes with soup …. and always ice cream. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I’m obsessed with cinnamon chex and the honey nut chex, the combo is fantastic!!….. and the chocolate chex but maybe not when I’m sick.

Iiiiich! I’m sorry to hear you still aren’t feeling well ๐Ÿ™ More time for WOW haha!
Usually when I’m sick I want some sort of soup with noodles or a grilled cheese sandwhich but no tomato soup because it’s too acidy for the tummy.
I have been eating oatmeal for dinner for a while now so I’ll be eating it for dinner tonight topped with some roasted almond butter. loooove.

    Sending healing vibes your way!

Haha! I wish there was more time for wow! But for some reason I’m always finding other ‘responsible’ things to do. Bugger. And oats for dinner used to be one of my absolute favorite things… I’m still trying not to overdo it on them though. Lesson learned ๐Ÿ˜•

Damn cold for sneakily attacking you! I hope you have somebody caring for you (the boy, your mum, …) and that you’ll feel better soon!

Having felt off for the past days, too, I agree with you on not being up for experimentation. Don’t push yourself to try new things when you’re not feeling it! I hope at least your tastebuds are still working – not being able to taste can be really annoying. Throw in a Monday of not tasting anything yet being ravenous for me this week and I’m understanding my body even less than usually.

As for foods I’m eating on an off stomach? Hmm … my mum used to cook chocolate pudding for me when I was sick as a child so that or applesauce, oats, soy yoghurt (with coconut flour mixed in, obviously :)). Dairy is a no-go for on sick days so Greek yogurt’s been off for the past week.

And you already know I’m having breakfast for dinner every day :): Cocoa banana oat bran with almond butter never gets old.

I totally agree, when I was in the throws of my sickness I could barely stomach anything. All I ate was toast with peanut butter OR jelly. Not both, that made me feel sick for some reason. I hope you’re able to fight this thing off! Everyone in the country being sick is definitely not making it easy. Btw, “think sporadic bouts of discomfort and nausea. Or actually, donโ€™t think about that” made me laugh out loud at my desk haha, thanks!

Do your thing, lady! The important thing is that you’re listening to your body. I agree, when the stomach is wonky all I want are easy carbs…hot grains, bananas, that sort of thing. And it’s all nourishing food, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that you haven’t gotten full-blown sick.

Carbs are the ONLY thing that tastes good when I’m feeling off. If I am going to have veggies, they have to be in soup form or it just isn’t happening. Good call on just going with your cravings- anything goes when I’m ill so long as it sounds appealing. You know my love for breakfast and it almost always features more than once a day for me. Today was a breakfast-for-lunch kinda day: feta omelet with pb & j toast and greens!
