. thinking out loud #59 .

January 2, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 106 Comments

Welcome to the first ToL of 2014! Nothing like some randomness to start the year off right πŸ˜€

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Let’s kick off the new year by taking a quick look back at the old one, shall we? WordPress sends out blog stat reports at the end of each year, and I love reading them to get a better feel of what people like seeing on Spoons. Apparently you guys are a big fan of recipes…

Top Posts

And you definitely have good taste — those almond fudge protein bars are some of my favourite. One of my blogging goals for 2014 is to publish more recipes. I’d like to start with sharing at least 2 per week, and see where things go from there. I’m also playing around with the idea of posting more entrees and savoury snacks… It’s no secret that I have a huge sweet tooth and that I prefer baking over cooking, but it might not be a bad idea to branch out a little this year. I don’t know… what do you guys think?

2. I think that these girls rock my socks off…

Top Comments

Sam, Chelsea, Heather, Miss, and Lauren… I love you guys πŸ˜€ And even if you didn’t make the top 5, I love you too. As much as I enjoy writing and photography, blogging just wouldn’t be the same without the interaction I have with you guys, so thank you so much for continuing to support my little corner of the web — it honestly means the world to me. Spoons has become more than I ever imagined, and I can’t wait to see what this next year has in store.

3. I also can’t wait until my birthday. Two.more.days. SQUEEE! πŸ˜€ I was going to head up to the mountains to do some snowboarding this weekend, but it’s going to be a little colder than I’d like it to be, so I’m thinking I’ll need to switch to Plan B. What is Plan B? I’ll let you know when I figure it out πŸ˜‰

4. Speaking of my birthday, I wanna update you guys on how Birthday Week is going! 5 days down, 2 to go…

Slipat

Day 1: Silpat.

Potato Smasher

Day 2: potato smasher (ha ha, Mom… but no, I really did need one)

Devotions Scarf

Day 3: Tiny Devotions sent me one of their awesome scarves.

Minion Love

Day 4: minion magnets/stickers.

Distressed Jeans

Day 5: distressed jeggings from American Eagle.

5. Can we just talk about those jeggings for a sec? AE was having an awesome sale for Boxing Day (40% off!) so I ended up picking up 3 pairs of pants (distressed, dark blue, black). You know those pants that just fit you perfectly? AE has those for me. And jeggings are freaking awesome because they look like jeans but feel like leggings. So.much.love.

6. Also really loving dates lately. I have a feeling these might become my newest foodie obsession…

Date Love

7. I also have a feeling that my Advent calendar was trying to tell me that one of my New Year’s resolutions should be to eat less chocolate… I had a calendar that kept on going after Christmas and counted down the days until the New Year, which is great except for the fact that two of my post-Christmas, pre-New Year’s chocolates were missing (note the lack of chocolate smudges in two of the slots)…

Empty Advent Calendar

I feel cheated. Oh, and giving up chocolate? Never going to happen.

8. While we’re on the topic of New Year’s resolutions, I suppose I should share mine with you… or at least I would if I had any. Truth be told, I’m not huge on making resolutions. I know the start of a new year can be a great boost of motivation, but… it’s a lot of pressure! I have this tendency to think in black and white, and it’s way too easy for me to fall into the kind of mentality where I feel like I should wake up on January 1st and suddenly be a new, perfect person. Not realistic, and I know that, but it’s a hard thought process for me to avoid, so I avoid the trap by not putting so much emphasis on the new year and making new goals on a more regular basis instead. Whatever works, right?

9. That was far too serious of a thought for a Thinking Out Loud post. Sowwy 😳

10. Have I ever mentioned how much I love reading your guys’ random thoughts? Because I seriously look forward to it every week. Thank you again for being awesome πŸ˜€

BUT!… one question this week — more entrees and savoury recipes: yay or nay?

I would love to see some more savory recipes on Spoons. I need to do some more veggiefied entrees on Clean Eats too. I was shocked to see I was lacking in this area. It will be a 2014 resolution, which no surprise I love. For me, it’s just another good excuse to write a list. I love the actual art of writing lists, but I really don’t put pressure on myself to actually accomplish everything. It’s just a way for me to jot down what’s running through my mind.
Now onto very important things. I believe today is your birthday so…cough, cough, ahem, ahem….Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Amanda. Happy Birthday to you. Let’s pretend that was in tune.

Yay to more savory dishes! Or better yet, sweet AND savory! You know I’m a fan…one of your TOP FIVE fans to be exact! Yipeeeee! πŸ˜€

And I just want to say that too serious or not (which I don’t think it was), I’m glad you brought up your thoughts on resolutions…I feel the same way. A friend of mine asked me the other day if I made any resolutions and I told him, “Nah, I don’t really like to set myself up for failure” Haha! I can’t help it…try as I might to overcome my perfectionism, there are just certain things that will always stay with me. I like the feeling of a fresh start, but I know that at the stroke of midnight, I’m not going to automatically transform into another person.

Ugh… the perfectionism gets me too… But I think that a big part of overcoming perfectionism and achieving goals is realizing that failure is a normal part of the process.

I can’t tell if I’m more savory or sweet. Personally, up until I read healthy living blogs, I didn’t even know what savory meant…. Hope your birthday week is going well and I’m with you about returning to normalcy, BUT I’m pretty sure I will be regretting that as soon as Monday rolls around. πŸ˜‰

And I also love AE jeans. All of mine are from there because I can always count on their sizes and styles. Most jeans are always way too long on me and I love that AE has a “short” option. The only thing that makes me sad is when I fall in love with a pair and they no longer have them after the season is over!

I’ll have to go check out AE! I have such a hard time finding jeans that fit me properly. This might be a weird question, but how tall are you? I have a hard time finding pants sometimes because I’m 5’7″ but have long legs…regulars are sometimes too short, but long sizes are WAY too long! So happy to see a blogger than has an early January birthday. Mine is January 9th and whenever my family asks what I want or need I literally have no suggestions. I keep asking my husband if we can celebrate it in July instead, haha.

Awwr, thanks for the mention! It’s hard NOT to comment when there’s so much inspiration, food for thought and deliciousness coming from your side.
Jeggins, yes! They’re pretty much the only pants I’ll ever wear [though even them not regularly] as a generally dress + tights girl. And that scarf is so pretty! I just -had- to click over to their store – and now I wish I hadn’t because they have so many great items and I can’t get them over here.
It looks like you were really celebrating birthday week in style – perfect!
Don’t feel like #8 was too serious for a post like this. After all, I guess the only ‘rule’ would be to share what’s on your mind and being honest in letting thoughts like this out, too, is just right. It IS on your mind right now after all. And yes, not making any resolutions at all seems like a good way to avoid the pressure. That’s why I haven’t set any ‘real’ resolutions for myself, either. Honestly, how much different from any other month is the start of January? Why not set smaller monthly goals slowly working towards the changes we want to achieve? Also, I may not know everything about you but I’d say there’s no need for you to feel you should wake up as a new perfect person – you’re great just the way you are <3.
Oh, and to answer your questions: yes, more savoury recipes in addition to the already awesome sweet ones would be nice. Do what feels right for you!
