. thinking out loud #38 .

July 4, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 103 Comments

1. Let’s start off this week’s randomness with some random facts, shall we?

Textaphrenia

Potato Diet

Funny how you may not even realize that you’re suffering from something until they slap a name on it. Textaphrenia – yet another ridiculous ailment of the 21st century. Still, I’ll take my chances and keep on texting. Those days of being able to talk on the phone for hours? Long gone. And while eating a diet of nothing but water, potatoes, and butter would make me die a little inside, at least it would save you the hassle of having to meal plan and spend a lot of time in the grocery store…

2. That reminds me of something I did when I was little, though… Back in the day, the only way I’d eat “pasta” was as plain noodles with butter and a [hefty] sprinkle of parmesan cheese. I couldn’t stand anything tomato related, and wasn’t a big fan of meatballs either. The same was true of pizza – I’d order it with extra cheese and scrape off as much of the pizza sauce as I could, until I was basically eating nothing but dough and cheese.

Plain Noodles

3. I’ve gotten pretty bad at sorting through my spam comments lately, but I did come across this gem the other day and thought I’d share the giggle…

Love Spell Spam

Love spells that work… as opposed to love spells that don’t; and from Summon Genie, no less! Hit me up if you’re in need of one and I’ll be sure to point you in the right direction.

4. Speaking of love… I had a little rendezvous with one of mine the other day…

Drugstore Haul

Essie’s In the Cab-ana and Over the Top  // Revlon’s Lash Potion mascara, Colorburst in Peony, and ColorStay liquid liner // Maybelline’s SuperStay 24hr concealer.

I needed to buy some more liquid eyeliner since I was almost out, and, in true Amanda fashion, ended up walking out with a little more than liquid eyeliner. BUT! In my defence, they were having a pretty good in-store promotion that I couldn’t pass up, and I’ve been wanting to try a few of these things anyways. I was especially happy about the nail polish, since I’ve been looking for that particular shade forever. I think this makes up for last week when I walked out of Sephora empty handed.

5. On the beauty front, I’ve got a quick tip for you guys (well, girls mostly). Did you know… you can use hair conditioner that you don’t like in place of shaving cream to shave your legs? True story. If you’re anything like me and like to try out different products, then you probably end up with the occasional dud that you feel bad for throwing away, but don’t actually want to use up because it wreaks havoc on your hair. Solution? Use the duddy conditioner in place of shaving cream. I can vouch that it works, so don’t knock it ’till ya try it!

6. Does anyone else cringe when they hear the sound of screeching tires? Like you’re holding your breath and dreading the sound of metal crunching against metal that may or may not follow? Not something I like to hear.

7. This, on the other hand, makes my ears very happy…

[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT_nvWreIhg&w=560&h=315″]

8. You know how I’ve been trying to limit my caffeine intake in hopes that it’ll help me sleep better? Well, it’s not making a lick of difference if the last three days are any indication, any I’m seriously missing my afternoon cappuccinos. Plus, I think I’ve made my Starbucks baristas kind of nervous… They always used to ring me up and start making my drink as soon as I walked through the door, but now? They look at me with uncertainty like they don’t know who I am anymore…

9. And, of course, Happy 4th to all my American friends, and happy Thursday to everyone else!

Do you prefer texting to talking on the phone?
If you had to survive off 3 foods, what would they be?
Greek yogurt, bananas, and almond butter.

I prefer texting when I am busy but for full conversation I prefer the phone. And if I am home, I cannot talk on my cell, I need an old fashioned cordless house phone. Something about holding a cell phone to my ear bothers me within 1 minute….3 foods I couldn’t live without? hmmm, I love so many specific foods but in all honesty, there is no replacement for peanut butter in my life. As much as I love chocolate, peanut butter is probably my all around favorite food since I eat it at all meals.

when i was little i did the opposite – scraped the cheese off my pizza – and basically just ate crust with sauce. i was a strange one.
survival foods – avocado, apples, sweet potatoes. i think. don’t make me choose. and coffee doesn’t count as a food right?

Oh my goodness- my sister used to eat her pasta with butter and parmesan growing up too! I always thought she was the only one and couldn’t understand why she loved it so much. I guess she isn’t as crazy as I thought!
If I had to survive off of 3 foods…hmm…bananas, bread, and greek yogurt or cottage cheese. I think. GAH. That’s such a hard question. If you asked me tomorrow my answers would probably be completely different!

    Have a lovely weekend, girly!

It depends who the person is/what the situation is, but I generally prefer texting … less awkward pauses and the person on the other end of the line doesn’t think you hung up because you are sitting there smiling and nodding through a phone cord. Not that I ever do this … 😉
Oatmeal with brown sugar, Greek Yogurt, and egg white

My sister would only eat pasta that way as a kid too! I liked sauce on mine, but I had a ton of other weird food habits and preferences when I was a kid, like dipping my grilled cheese in corn syrup. I actually still do this sometimes… and I still think it’s good haha.

If I had to survive off 3 foods, they would probably be bananas, soy nut butter, and sweet potatoes.

Oh I am obsessed with this song!! I have been playing it non stop- I even think I’m part of the band- I play percussion on my chest when it gets really intense (there’s also an air guitar solo- my imaginary crowd gets very excited) Three foods to live on- fish, eggs and ooh I’m going to go Seasonal and say potaots in winter and apples in summer (I know they are an autumn fruit but they are my favourite) – glad I dot have to do that though 😉 When I was a kid I was so adventurous- I would eat raw oysters from the wharf at one and a half, hummus was a staple of my diet and I loved sashimi with umeboshi plum- odd child! My love of vanilla cannoli was also very strong by then too- dont worry 😉 I love those random facts- I’m sure the Irish are nodding about the potato diet. Random fact- vanilla is a component of mothers milk- which is why it is thought to be so comforting (isn’t that odd) I do love vanilla 😉 xo Sophia

I have noooo idea how I used to talk on the phone with my friends for hours! I’m totally a texter now.
Hmmm, question two is a toughie…I think of have to go with almond butter & jelly sandwiches. Does that use up my 3 foods? If not, I’d like to add in eggs. I can eat eggs everyday.
And I too need to try to back off the caffeine. I had caffeine around 3pm yesterday and could fall asleep until 3am. And I went to bed at midnight. Torture. But at least it means ill fall asleep easily tonight. Fingers crossed!

I am a HUGE random facts person.
Polar Bears fur is really clear not white. Hippos spend most of their time in the water because they get sun burned easily. Facebook original plans the “like” button was originally called the awesome button. I could go on and on.
I definitely text over talking. Sometimes I don’t answer my phone but then text the person to see what they want. With kids… it’s just easier.
I’ve been going crazy with the coffee lately.. I went from a half a cup to 3 cups a day on average. It hasn’t affected my sleeping though either.

So basically, if I’m faced with the ‘you’re stranded on a desert island and you can only have three things with you’, my answer should be: something to boil water in, a massive field of potatoes, and an unlimited vat of butter? 😉 I think I would prefer peanut butter, baby carrots and guacamole (unless guacamole counts as a recipe and not a food, and wouldn’t count….then I’d probably have to pick blueberries. Overthinking much?), personally.
And I ate pasta the same way as a kid – I was a picky eater to begin with, but tomato sauce was my most hated thing ever. Wouldn’t eat any sort of pasta with tomato sauce, and flat out refused to eat pizza…what kid would not eat pizza at all? And I didn’t like beef, so meatballs or meat sauce would have been out too…although, I did discover alfredo sauce and developed an obsession that lasted for years.

And talking on the phone? Only to my mom, otherwise I’d rather people text me.

Ohh the age old ‘three foods’ question…I’m going to have to go with Greek yogurt, applesauce (or blueberries) and eggs. I was tempted to replace eggs with peanut butter but I need a bit of savory thrown into the mix! I love that my phone obsession actually has a name to it- I am so guilty of constantly checking for texts and refreshing my inbox…and in awkward situations? that multiplies by like a thousand!

The funny thing is… your three foods are pretty much my three foods. We’re two of a kind 😉 If I picked three you didn’t choose it would be cereal, mac and cheese, and grapes.
I didn’t have any strange food habits as a kid, I think… Actually, wait… I used to have a pb & J, scrape off the jelly with doritos, and then crunch the doritos into the peanut butter left on the sandwich. Yeap. Lol!

I’m still a little guilty of scraping some sauce off of pizza. Apparently I like taking the one thing that could possibly classify pizza as a vegetable off. Oh well. I usually pile a ton of vegetables/various sauce/toppings on my noodles, but the other day I tried plain cheesy noodles, and I felt like a little girl again. I’d forgotten how good plain noodles are!

Anyways, I ran out of foundation the other day, so I went to the store to restock my supply. I left with so many things I didn’t need/want. I think I’m in love with beauty products. I somehow even ended up with like 3 new types of eyeliner. I haven’t even been wearing it lately lol!

I love that One Republic song too. I went to a concert of theirs a few years back, and it was beautiful 🙂 Also, good job on lowering that caffeine intake! It’ll take time, but my mom used to have caffeinated sodas/coffee twice a day, and now she doesn’t even drink caffeine. She says the first few weeks aren’t fun, but now she claims she sleeps 10x better! Hopefully that’s a little positive encouragement for you! I hope your Starbucks friends can take the mini breakup though!

Beauty products are an easy thing to love… As for the 3 different types of eyeliner, you clearly need that many to figure out which one works best – it’s all in the name of good science 😉 And thankie for the encouragement! When I am writing a lot of exams, have problems in relationships (with friends or my boyfriend), worry about my family or something like that. It leads to me thinking and thinking and thinking and not being able to calm my mind down and get some good sleep. So maybe there is something on your mind which you need to work out first before your sleeping pattern get’s better?
