. thinking out loud #121 .

March 12, 2015 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 105 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. I miss chewing gum like whoa. It’s been about 3 weeks since I had my last piece before giving it up for Lent, and it’s not getting any easier! The second week wasn’t actually too bad, but the cravings came back with a vengeance in the third week. All I can say is that there better be gum in my Easter basket because it’s looking better than chocolate at this point! Said as I finish off a brownie batter breakfast bake for dinner…

Brownie Bowl

2. Speaking of dinner, if you’re looking for a more traditional one, then head on over to Savory Style and check out my recipe for the Spinach and Mushroom Wild Rice Casserole that I mentioned the other day.

Wild Rice Casserole

3. Since we’re already on the topic of food, we need to talk about an unfortunate realization that I’ve come to. My body does not like orange food. I haven’t tested this theory on things like Cheetos, Doritos, or orange Skittles, but whenever I eat anything like: carrots, cantaloupes, sweet potatoes, kabocha, butternut, papayas, mangoes, etc, my stomach is a mess for the next few days. And I don’t even have to eat a lot of them — even one serving will do it. This sucks big time because… I love orange foods!

Orange Foods I Love

4. Another thing I’m not a huge fan? New mascara. Even if it’s a kind that I love, I almost never like it when I first start using it. I think it’s because I prefer my mascaras on the thicker/tackier side, and it takes about a week or so for them to get to the consistency I like. And in case you’re curious which mascara I’m currently using, it’s this one right here…

Maybelline Pumped Up Mascara

5. …. which (in keeping with the selfie-every-ToL-post theme), you can see on my eyeballs eyelashes here…

Just Another Car Selfie

And I have no idea what I’m looking at or why I have such a stank face. RBF FTW.

6. Maybe it’s because of the fact that I failed to read the [not-so] fine print and accidentally bought a baby spinach mix instead of baby spinach greens. I’ve been adding spinach to my morning smoothies on occasion since I’m not the biggest fan of salads in the winter and it’s a lot harder for me to get my greens in, but let’s just say that the added bok choy and kale make things a little greener than I’d like them to be first thing in the morning.

Super Spinach Blah

7. Speaking of smoothies, I’ve run into a small dilemma… Do I or do I not pack a blender in my suitcase for my trip to Hawaii? I know it sounds a little crazy, but I average 2 smoothies a day so the thought going without one for 10 days makes me die a little on the inside… especially since the fruit in Hawaii is ah.maze.ing. And I wouldn’t be taking my high-speed blender — just my teeny, tiny Magic Bullet, which basically takes up as much room as a pair of shoes. Totally doable. Doing it.

8. And on that note… I’m leaving for Hawaii tomorrow! I didn’t preschedule any posts because I really wanted to be able to disconnect and take a mini vacation from blogging, but I’ll still be popping in for ToL and Link Love while I’m away, plus maybe an As We Speak or WIAW post thrown in there as well. If you want, you can follow me on Instagram to see updates and pictures from my trip, and if not, then I’ll see you on Sunday for some Link Love! Happy Thursday, friendly faces!

Well I don’t know about you, but I can’t even fathom a better dinner than warm brownies straight outta the oven. πŸ™‚ Have so so much fun in Hawaii! Just eat a ton of the yellow stuff (aka fresh pineapple) and orange kicking you to the curb might not hurt so bad. πŸ˜‰

You know what’s horrible? I think I’m allergic to pineapple πŸ˜† I grew up eating it and then it just started making my mouth itch like crazy one day. I haven’t had it in a few years, though, so maybe things have changed!

What an interesting thing to give up for Lent! Do you think he sacrifice is bringing you closer to God at all? Uhm… I am off to search your website for that brownie batter breakfast bake. I know I have seen it before, but that picture has just provided me with the biggest craving ever!. I am loving your selfies! I have followed you for a very long time, and it has been so lovely to finally get a sense of who you are. You’re stunning girly! Keep the selfies coming!

Don’t pack the blender! Branch out of your comfort zone and enjoy the Hawaiian cuisine. It’s only 10 days.. you can do it. Take it as an opportunity to enjoy some new foods! Plus, I am sure you will be able to find some incredible smoothies if the cravings come with vengeance.

Have a very safe trip and the best time ever! πŸ™‚

I’m not sure about the gum sacrifice bringing me closer to God, which is why in addition to giving something up I always like to do something extra as well. Like this year I’ve been spending more time reading my bible and going to more masses during the week, and that’s definitely been helping πŸ™‚

Have a great trip to Hawaii! So jealous! I don’t like mascara until it’s almost empty! I’m not a big fan of salads but love sautΓ©ed spinach with a little salt and garlic. Odd you can’t eat orange foods. I would hate to give up my sweet potatoes. Enjoy your vacation.

Have SO MUCH FUN in Hawaii! I’m only moderately jealous (I say moderately because we finally have half-decent weather here, but who wouldn’t want to go to Hawaii). I’ve always wanted to go there, especially after seeing pictures like that one! Now that you mention that about the orange foods killing your stomach, I’m wondering if it’s the mass quantities of carrots I consume. I don’t eat a lot of other orange foods but I should see if anything changes when I cut back on them a little in my salad…

We’ve been having really nice weather here too, so it’s like… why did I choose to go now instead of 1 month ago?! And it never hurts to try! Carrots are one of the worst offenders for me, unfortunately πŸ˜₯

THE CASSEROLE HAS ARRIVED! And I’ve seriously been getting super sick from carrots the past three weeks. Not sweet taters (thank god!), but carrots are killing me. NOW what will I dip into my daily hummus snack when celery ribs are $3,765 a bundle? Good lord. And I say no to the blender debacle. Support the local Hawaiian shops and let the moms and pops make them for you!

Given that there is probably the most delicious fruit in Hawaii, there should be smoothies available too, shouldn’t it? I’ve never seen somebody taking a blender on a vacation πŸ˜€ you’re one of a kind! Have fun and stay safe!

You know… I’ve never paid attention so I have no idea. Hmm. I remember seeing tonnes of roadside fruit stands, but never smoothie vendors. They probably have them in restaurants, stores, and juice bars, but I also have a feeling those might cost an arm and a leg.

Fingers crossed you won’t be tempted by any orange foods while on Hawaii. Because stomach issues suck even more when they happen while on holiday. Maybe it’s the fiber? But then again, you didn’t mention that happening with other kinds of produce so … well.
Anyway, enjoy your sunny getaway and come back with a tan in 10 days πŸ™‚ !

I thought that about the fibre too, but it really only happens with orange foods. And I swear that I’m the only person who can go to Hawaii and come back just as pale as I was when I left. I’m making it a mission to change that this year.

I wonder if you have a sensitivity to fiber? I know you said even just after 1 serving, but you eat a lot of fiber in your smoothies, so even 1 serving could put your fiber a little to high for your tummy’s liking? That really stinks and I hope you figure out why your belly is getting angry at you!

I use that mascara and my lashes NEVER look that good. #jealous!

No shame in taking your bullet to Hawaii! Go for it girl! Hope you have a fantastic trip! Enjoy yourself, you deserve it!

I thought it might be the fibre too, but my stomach doesn’t seem to have an issue if I replace those foods with other foods that are still high in fibre. As long as they’re not orange, I’m okay. And thanks, Stacy!

When I am on the “low residue diet” before imaging and stuff (for the hospital), my diet consists of orange, yellow, and beige foods, but I call it the orange food diet. A little bit different than your dilemma, but I dislike it on principle. I hope you get it sorted–you definitely love your orange foods!
