. opening pandora’s box .

May 13, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 76 Comments

Intros are hard.

I’ve already spent something like 20 minutes trying to come up with an intro to this post, and I’m no closer now than I was when I started. Well, that’s only partially true. The truth is that I spent about 20 seconds trying to come up with an intro before getting distracted by YouTube… and Google… and my inbox… but that’s not the point. The point is, I’m still not quite sure how to start and this needs to get this done, so we’re just going to skip the formalities and drive dive right in to everything.

I think I may have opened Pandora’s Box, and I’m not talking about the adorable charm bracelets…

Pandora

I’m talking about the fact that I may or may not have introduced my mom to the wonderfully addicting black hole that is Sephora. Let me play it out for you. So yesterday was Mother’s Day…

Mother's Day

We were originally planning to head out to the lake and do some BBQing, but I guess no one was really feeling it because the clouds rolled in and we pretty much instantly used that as an excuse to stay home. No problem, we had backup plans – or at least we made some up as we went along.

Instead of time at the lake, we decided to spend some time at the mall – a girl’s day shopping date, if you will. So after scarfing down some lunch (everyone knows you shouldn’t go shopping on an empty stomach), we headed out to see what the wonderful world of retail had to offer.

Turns out, not much. I don’t know if it’s just that strange in-betweeny time of the year, but we honestly didn’t come across anything that caught our eyes.Β That is, until we went to Sephora…

Sephora

Now, you guys know I love all things beauty related. To be honest, I think the beauty junkie side of me is becoming a lot more dominant than the foodie side of me. But I digress. The point is, I could talk makeup for hours on end with anyone who’s willing to listen.Β My mom, on the other hand, likes makeup, but keeps things pretty basic. That’s okay. I can worth with basic, especially with Urban Decay’s help…

Naked Basics

Long story short, we walked out of Sephora a little over an hour later with plenty of goodies in tow, and my mom is already talking about going back.Β What have I done?!

After that, we had a nice chat over coffee…

Coffee and Makeup

… before heading home for dinner and a movie. Brave was on TV, and my mom had never seen it so I figured watching it together would be the perfect way to end Mother’s Day.

Pixar's Brave

The only problem was that we both ended up bawling our eyes out. Dang Disney tear-jerkers. Ahh well, it was still a marvelous Mother’s Day.

MiMM

Happy Monday, friends!

. – . – . – .

What did you do for Mother’s Day?
Do movies make you cry? I’m not usually a crier, but dang… this one got me good.
Favorite Disney Pixar film? Finding Nemo or Wall-E.

Brave is the perfect Mother’s Day movie!

When it comes to make-up I never wear a whole lot, but I do love all the fun products at Mac and Sephora. So easy to rack up a huge bill there, though!

OMG that store! I stay as far away as possible for the sake of my wallet, but some times even I’m not strong enough to resist it’s siren’s call! However, when it comes to my mom and I getting in some quality, dollar-dropping bonding/shopping time, Target is definitely our go-to place! Everything from our favorite snack foods to some cute new clothes – all in one convenient location πŸ˜‰ Glad you guys had a wonderful mother’s day!

What a fun way to celebrate Mother’s Day! I’m a huge fan of makeup and all things Sephora. Have you been to Ulta? It’s like CVS + Sephora and a little cheaper I think. I love Urban Decay. They make my favorite eye liner that goes on like a marker. I know what you mean about favoring beauty and such over food sometimes. I feel like that with fashion! Have a great Monday Amanda!

Aw! I love that you & your mom went on a Sephora shopping date – how fun! It’s definitely a black hole – the last time I went was in Vegas last year – they had a live D!!

We went to my parents house for a BBQ on Saturday, then yesterday my mom and I went greenhouse shopping. Later on, Courts Mom came over & we made BBQ bison burgers. I gave her Spirit Junkie + wine as a gift.

My mom is not into makeup. She tried to be when I was younger, but she does not have a clue what to do with eyeshadow and insists she is allergic to mascara. Naturally, growing up, I had to teach myself how to apply makeup properly, with many misfortunes along the way. I did end up getting my makeup artist certification, worked at Origins through college and even as seasonal help at Sephora when I was working full time, just because I could. not. get. enough. It’s an easy addiction and I don’t recommend seeking any sort of remedy, other than trying out every new makeup trend thats out there.
If you need recommendations… there are a couple things you absolutely NEED. 1. Nars blush in orgasm. If you can score the bronzer/blush duo, do it. 2. Dior Show Mascara. I actually can’t wear it, because I AM allergic.

Ohhh a fellow beauty junkie!! <3 I actually seriously considered becoming a makeup artist back in the day. I loooooved experimenting with different looks, and usually ended up wearing seriously dramatic works that were probably a little too much for school πŸ˜† All in good fun though πŸ˜€ I haven't tried Dior Show, but I do love Nars' Orgasm and Laguna. Have you tried any of the Tarte Amazonian clay blushes? I've been considering picking one of those up because I've heard so many good things.

It was actually my mom that got it. I have both Naked 1 and 2 so I didn’t really want to invest in another neutral palette just yet. My mom is really big on mattes, which is why I suggested it for her. Buuuut if I’m being honest, I’ll probably end up buying it too because I’m kind of a sucker for good neutrals… and it’s so tiny and cute!

Hahah your poor mom- she doesn’t know what’s hit her wallet ;)! I’m usually good about beauty buys in that I limit how often I stock up butttt I’m sure my purchases per shopping trip compensate for my infrequent trips! I’ve never seen Brave but is it weird that I love crying in movies- I sound like such a sap but it’s such a cathartic feeling! The last movie I bawled my eyes out in was Django Unchained- I just couldn’t stop!

Ahh, I love Disney movies! My favorite is probably Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story for Pixar… or Up – which is an extremely sad movie. Lol. I love getting my mom hooked on things I love because it makes them ten times more enjoyable. Recently, she’s becoming quite the foodie and we’ve ventured to Wegmans more times than I can count in the passed year. Also, she’s now addicted to frozen yogurt, Keurig, and Dunkin’ Donuts. Hooray! I’m happy to hear you and your mum had a lovely Mother’s Day filled with girly activities. I didn’t get to spend the day with mine but visited my parents from Thursday to Saturday.
Thanks for reminding me I have yet – bad, I know – to watch Brave. It being tear-inducing, though, might keep me from watching it alone so I’ll have to wait until the next movie night with my mum or a friend. What do you think? Yes to Finding Nemo being the cutest movie so far!
We don’t have Sephora around here but it sounds like we’re missing out on a lot. So cute you got your mum addicted, too. That flower necklace is gorgeous! Which brand is it by?

I’m the complete opposite – I actually prefer watching tear-jerker movies alone because I don’t like people seeing me cry. I’m having that issue too with shopping! The last few times I have gone out I have found NOTHING worth spending money on. Always so disappointing. My mom lives in IL and I live in FL, so I called her in the morning to wish her happy mother’s day and then I went to the beach because I know that’s what she would have wanted to do if she was in FL. Tough life. My sister sent me pictures of her opening my present, so that was nice. I cry at movies all the time…I cry at TV..I cry at books..I cry at life. I’m a crier. Fave Disney Pixar is probably Monsters, Inc. or Nemo! I do love Wall-E though… I told my students last summer that the major lesson I learned from Wall-E is reduce, reuse, recycle or you’ll get fat. You definitely can’t go wrong with either Naked 1 or Naked 2. Both are really great quality, and both have plenty of shadows that pretty much eliminate the need to turn to other eyeshadows if you’re just going for a neutral look. The main difference between the two is that Naked 1 has warmer shades, while Naked 2 is on the cooler side. So it really depends on what your skin tone is, and if you’re looking for something to compliment it or balance it out.
