. a very important decision .

December 27, 2013 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 103 Comments

Despite the fact that I spent a good chunk of yesterday trying to fight off the post-Christmas blues, one good thing about the holidays being over is the fact that I can now go back to my regular old eats. I’m all for letting loose and enjoying all the foods the Christmas season has to offer, but I’d be lying if I said that I was able to walk away from all the treats and feasts scotch-free. Welcome to my life…

Ginger Kombucha

Ginger Tea

… it is riddled with indigestion 😆

So I really wish I could do a Christmas recap for you guys, but to be completely honest… I don’t really have a lot to say or show. Christmas was a little different for us this year. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but a lot smaller and quieter than I’m used to. The reason being that my mom, who’s basically the brains behind the entire operation, came down with a nasty flu about a week before Christmas and was pretty much down for the count. I did my best to help her out wherever I could, but moms just have that special touch that’s hard to replicate. She still amazed everyone by putting a delicious spread on the table, but it’s hard to feel super festive when 1/3 of your party is sick (I don’t have any other family here, so holidays are just me, Mom, and Dad). She wasn’t even feeling that well on Christmas Eve, so we ended up having to go to mass at 9 instead of midnight, which only contributed to the strangeness of it all…

Christmas Ribbon

But instead of lamenting the fact that Christmas is over while I sit here feeling like it’s still supposed to happen, we’re going to talk about cake. Why cake? Because today kicks off the start of Birthday Week and it’s time to get serious about the kind of cake I want underneath my candles this year. Okay, so tomorrow technically kicks off the start of Birthday Week since the big day is January 4th, but I don’t post on Saturdays and I wanted your guys’ input on what kind of cake I should ask for… I spent some time browsing the internet last night, and I managed to narrow it down to 5 choices. In no particular order…

#1… Oreo Cake via My Baking Addiction.

Oreo-Cake

#2… [Almond Butter] Cup Brownie Cake via Sprinkles Bakes.

AB Cup Brownie Cake

#3… Oreo and Kit Kat Cake via Bubbly Nature Creations.

Oreos and Kit Kat Cake

#4… Chocolate Honey Cake via Sprinkles Bakes.

Chocolate Honey Cake

#5… Chocolate Ricotta Icebox Cake via Martha Stewart.

Chocolate Ricotta Cake

Ridiculous, right? There are just WAY too many amazing cakes out there. So tell me… which cake should I choose?? Let me know in the comments!

YESSSS. good ol’ ginger tea for the gut. I HEAR YOU THERE SISTER. I definitely indulged in some of my grandmas christmas baking.. how could I not!?

My choice would be the almond butter brownie cake.

Is it too late to vote!? If not, I definitely am voting for the Almond Butter Cup Cake! That just says Amanda to me! 🙂

Happy Birthday week! The Oreo Kit Kat cake sounds both intriguing and delicious. It gets my vote for sure.

And an unfortunate fact of adulthood is that Christmas just feels weird some years. Mine has felt weird for the last 6 years – the year I got a part time retail job. So much has changed in that time and I no longer look forward to Christmas for the same reasons, but it still is a lovely time of year.

It’s definitely disappointing that we outgrow that childhood excitement, but you’re right — it’s still a great time of the year 🙂

My money is on the chocolate honey cake, even though they all look delicious. I’m willing to bet the Kit Kat cake will only aid your indigestion. Devilish chocolate wafer cookies.
Hope your mama is feeling better now, and Happy Birthday Week.

Sorry to hear your Christmas was a little lack lustre, the same thing happened for us a couple of years ago round New Year when my parents got sick. Hope your Mum gets better soon! Those cakes, oh my, spoilt for choice!

Wowww already birthday week is here?! I feel like it was just yesterday you celebrated your birthday! 😛 That shows how scary time is, mannnnn. And I totally think you should listen to me and get the ricotta cake! ahhhhhhhh ricotta cake is one of my favorites in the whole entire world and although I’ve never tried a chocolate version of it, I’m sure it will be delicious. It doesn’t seem so decadent that you can’t have more than one slice either. 😀

Oh no! So sorry to hear your mother was sick for Christmas. That was me last year. Hope she starts feeling better. As for the cakes, I’d just have a multi-layer cake of each, because there’s NO WAY I could decide on one. Holy yum! Happy birthday week! 🙂

I say go with the Oreo!! There’s just something about cookie’s and cream that SCREAMS happy birthday to me! Also, I think it would be the best one to pair with some vanilla bean ice cream!

Sorry to hear about your mom being under the weather. I hope she’s feeling much better now! 🙂

ahh sorry to hear about your mom 🙁 I hope she’s feeling better! And I’m glad that you were still able to have a good christmas despite that nasty little bug. As for the birthday cake…so many yummy choices – they all sounds fabulous, but I think I’d have to choose #5. I have a weakness for ice box cakes. And the ricotta sounds amazing!

YAY! [Almost] birthday twins! Since mine is on the 6th, I guess I better get working on my cake choice as well…I actually haven’t had a real birthday “cake” in 3 years. Woah. That is WAY too long. Maybe that means I can justify having two this year? I think yes…
I mean, between that almond butter cup cake, the oreo & kit-kat cake, and my sister’s famous french vanilla with homemade buttercream icing, I’m never going to be able to pick just one!

I can’t wait to see what you decide to make!

Aww sorry to hear your mom was sick on Christmas :/. I didn’t even think people COULD get sick on Christmas…like, is that allowed?! Geez.

Wow Wow Wow to ALL the cake.
Given I’m presuming making all 5 isn’t an option, which BTW, it totally should be – I think of almond butter, I think of you, so #2 is the perfect cake for you in my opinion.

    Have a fab weekend :D.

Being sick on Christmas is so crappy – I’ve been there before, but luckily it was several years ago and I’ve managed to stay bug-free around Christmas since then. I hope your mom is feeling better!

All of those cakes look freaking fantastic – it’s impossible to choose between them! Maybe you should just celebrate your birthday multiple times so that you can make them all? 😉

Cake!!!! Exciting- and I have made THAT very Oreo and kit kat cake only last week for my frineds bday- IT IS AMAZING- that or the Oreo cake have my vote 😉 gee whizz I had the worst Christmas- I was on call for work (I’m an assault counsellor) and got called in to one of the most distressing and violent cases I have ever worked on- heartbreaking :(. I spent 9 hours at work- so it left little time for Christmas celebrations. I don’t have a lot of family either and my party was down 1/3 of its group without me too- so they know how it feels 🙂 Hope you have a fantastic bday week Amanda ! (And pick the Oreo or Oreo kit kat cake ;))

so weird! I haven’t been staying on top of my blog reading lately but today I read yours & we are scary alike. my mother also had the flu over Christmas & it was odd, not having her all bustling around & cooking way too much. AND my birthday is the 2nd so I am all cake-ariffic this week on pinterest. I am totally stealing your options though and I heart cake #2 SO much 🙂 I am adding almond butter cups to my grocery list as I type. now the next big question: what is the birthday dinner going to be?
