. WIAW โ€ฆ this AND that, take 2 .

February 19, 2014 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 113 Comments

Some foods just taste better when they’re together. Almond butter and honey. Macaroni and cheese. Chocolate and… well… everything ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ve done a few posts where I’ve talked about some of my favourite foodie combos, but seeing as the last one was waaaaaay back in November, I figure it’s time for another. So for today’s What I Ate Wednesday, I give you this AND that… take 2.

WIAW

Breakfast… [ oatmeal AND yogurt ]

Oats and Yogurt

If you’ve never stirred a couple spoonfuls of yogurt into cooked oats before, you need to get on that. Seriously. Do it right now. I’ll wait. What’s that you say? You’re not hungry? You’re not at home? Pftโ€ฆ fiiiiiiineโ€ฆ you can just listen to me ramble on about how much I love this combo instead. I’m not a huge fan of using yogurt in things like overnight oats, but cooked oats are a whole other story. I actually can’t even remember the last time I had oats without yogurt — I live for the creamy tanginess. Throw some ground flax, cinnamon, and almond butter on top, and I’m a happy camper.

Morning snack… [ dates AND almond butter ]

Dates and AB

So simple, so good — nature sure does know her candy. This obsession is actually getting a little out of handโ€ฆ I can literally polish off an entire bag of dried fruit in a day if I’m not carefulโ€ฆ and we’re not even going to talk about the amount of almond butter that accompanies that. The supply I brought back from my trip to Cali? It’s now short two jars. Ahem. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Lunch… [ sweet AND salty ]

Sweet and Salty Snack Plate

Still snack plating, still loving it. I tend to vary what I toss on them from day to day (this one has: Dr. Kracker crispbread, deli chicken, kabocha, carrots, cherry tomatoes, almonds & raisins, and cottage cheese & jam), but one thing remains constant — there’s always something sweet, and there’s always something salty. I’m a huge fan of the combo in general, but I find that I always need to have a little something sweet with my lunch or I just don’t feel satisfied.

Afternoon snack… [ coffee AND chocolate ]

Chocolate Protein Smoothie

I realize this looks nothing like a typical cup of coffee with a side of chocolate, but if you caught the thick and creamy chocolate smoothie recipe I posted yesterday, you may have noticed that I sometimes toss a teaspoon of instant coffee granules into the mix. Not only does the coffee enhance the chocolate flavour, but it adds a nice little caffeine boost on the days when I feel myself dragging in the afternoon.

Dinner… [ noodles AND stir fry ]

Noodles and Stir Fry

I’d normally say noodles AND butter AND parmesan cheese (favourite combo since I was a kid), but these are leftovers from Sunday’s family dinner, and apparently my parents don’t think that eating plain buttered noodles is an acceptable meal. Pfffft. Whatever. Mom still makes a mean stir fry.

Evening snack… [ cereal AND milk ]

Cereal and Milk

Unlike last week’s crazy late night soup snack (yeah I have no idea either), this week’s evening snack is a lot more Amanda-ish. Cereal and milk. I normally get all fancy with my cereal bowls and toss in things like yogurt, fruit, and nut butter, but I just wanted something simple last night, so I went with plain old milkโ€ฆ aaaaand 3 different cereals (Raisin Bran, cinnamon Puffins, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest) because I’m apparently incapable of keeping things that simple. I always forget how good cereal with milk is — have to write myself a sticky note to remember.

And that’s it for me today, friends! I’ll see you guys tomorrow for Thinking Out Loud! ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh man, almond butter + dates (or dried fig) is seriously amazing. Like, how can something so simple be incredibly mind blowing? I was craving oatmeal last night – I thought of you. I’m going to be living out of a hotel room for a month & I predict a LOT of oatmeal & yogurt will be consumed during this time.

    a) Oatmeal AND cinnamon
    b) Dates AND Maranatha raw almond butter
    c) Coffee AND toast with PB or butter. Or a muffin. I always need something grainy with coffee
    d) Noodles AND homemade bolognese sauce
    e) Cereal AND my hand + face. Just give me that whole damn box.
    f) (do you prefer your cereal soggy or crunchy?) CRUNCHY! But, when I was a kid I liked it soggy – esp Mini Wheats

    c) Coffee AND coconut milk.
    d) Noodles AND alfredo sauce.
    e) Cereal AND nut butter.
    f) (do you prefer your cereal soggy or crunchy?) Crunchy!!! Nothing worse than forgetting your breakfast and coming back to a softened pile of goo.

I completely agree with the savory + sweet, except no cottage cheese for this girl. Except for in small amounts in lasagna… No.

    a) Oatmeal/oat bran AND wheat bran [and several other add-ins]: I can’t seem to use oatmeal only [or in my case more often: oat bran] when cooking it stove-top but have experimented and found my -perfect- mix of grains several years ago.
    b) Dates AND almond butter. BUT not stuffed into the dates – blended into a caramel-y spread. By the spoonful. Okay, now I sparked a craving. I wonder if there are some dates hidden in the pantry …?
    c) Tea [because I don’t drink coffee] AND chocolate.
    d) Noodles AND soup. Given the fact that I’ve been having Chickpea Noodle Soup today and various kinds of soups with noodles added in the past days it’s become a new favourite combination.
    e) Cereal AND … cereal.
    f) (do you prefer your cereal soggy or crunchy?) Preferably a mix of both textures. As in: adding more crunchy cereal on top of the soggy. A mix of textures – perfect.

    Happy Wednesday!

Food combinations ^_^ Makes life (even) more delicious and interesting.

Oatmeal and . . . Yoghurt, dried fruit and lots and lots of nut butter. Almond butter is the favorite.

Dates and . . . Almond butter ๐Ÿ˜‰ You know my heart, Amanda. It beats for AB.

Coffe and . . . Chocolate or cookies. Chocolate cookies?

Noodles and . . . Either beef or tofu, veggies and nuts. And a hearty dash of oil.

Cereal and . . . Yoghurt, dried fruits and nut butter. Hah! Same as oatmeal ๐Ÿ˜‰ Can’t go wrong with that combination.

Crunchy or soggy? I’m not hard to please, so I have no preference. I love and embrace cereal.

Warm hugs your way, dear ๐Ÿ™‚

    a) Oatmeal AND Eggs. Always one of my favourite breakfast combos.
    b) Dates AND ummm….more dates? I think I usually end up eating them by themselves. Apparently, I should change that.
    c) Coffee AND ice cream. AKA: pretty much the only way I’m getting coffee ๐Ÿ˜‰
    d) Noodles AND marinara. If you asked me that when I was 10, I would have given the same answer as you ๐Ÿ˜‰ But apparently, pasta with tomato-based sauces has grown on me.
    e) Cereal AND yogurt. I didn’t have any cereal for my yogurt bowl yesterday, which made me sad.
    f) CRUNCHY! I usually end up munching on dry cereal because I hate it when it goes soggy. (P.S. the cereal talk has given me a mini wheats craving…)

I’m a big fan of combo foods. In fact, I cannot remember the last time I ate a single food item on it’s own. Fruit just begs for nut butter or yogurt, cereal needs milk and toppings, most savory dishes want avocado… and so on
    oatmeal and banana
dates and yogurt (but I have feeling this would change once I try the almond butter combo)
coffee and … can you believe as a native of Seattle I dislike coffee? (drops head in shame)
noodles and a simple fresh tomato sauce
    cereal and milk
I’m middle of the road, prefer my cereal neither crunchy nor soggy. Sort of like Goldilocks, “just right!” Except for shredded wheat, soggy all the way!

And I don’t think Ive ever put yogurt into COOKED oats before. Maybe I’m worried it will make them less hot or something? I prefer my oats nice and toasty…unless they are overnight oats….then Im good with them cold lol I do however love love love me some crunch which is why I put as little milk in my cereal as possible. b) Dates AND almonds.
    c) Coffee AND vanilla.

Dates and almond butter are literally one of my favorite combinations. I don’t know how anyone could *not* like it! It’s the perfect pre-workout fuel too. I keep a few of those individual packs of nut butter in my gym bag and pack a few dates in the morning. After work I snack on them on my way to Pure Barre and I’m ready to go!

You don’t stick the yogurt in the oatmeal while you’re cooking it, right? Just afterwards to eat it? (I think the idea of cooking it with yogurt is a little weird, but you are the one who introduced me to egg whites in oatmeal so I should probably trust your judgment…)

I agree wholeheartedly, I don’t like yogurt in my overnight oats but love it on cooked oats! It’s so good mixed with some PB2 and dolloped onto hot oats, then topped with sliced banana and dry roasted peanuts. SERIOUSLY good.

    a) Oatmeal AND runny egg. I miss savory oats… time to make them!
    b) Dates AND nothing, really. I should try them!
    c) Coffee AND half & half. I’m a purist
    d) Noodles AND spinach. (LOTS of things and spinach.)
    e) Cereal AND fruit (and milk). Just had Kashi Heart to Heart Oat Flakes and Blueberry Clusters with fresh blueberries and 2% milk for today’s breakfast. Yum.

    b) Dates AND Merp O___O I have never tried a date…..! I’ll predict you might be doing a face-palm right now.
    c) Coffee AND cinnamon. Oh my sweet, sweet, cinnamon. How I love thee. (erm, sorry for my awkward Shakespeare ramble….)
    d) Noodles AND cheese. To be specific, Annie’s whole grain shells, cheese, peas, cracked black pepper and a few chunks of avocado on top. Just for good measure ๐Ÿ˜‰
    e) Cereal AND almond milk. Maybe raisins if I am feelin’ sassy. And if I am eating raisin bran or something similar. Otherwise I can’t get down.
    f) (do you prefer your cereal soggy or crunchy?) Soggy. Like mushy soggy. Feel free to gag, I think I just did too when I actually wrote the description. I digress.

I go through almond butter way too quickly too, the thing I have the hardest time controlling myself around. Another, healthier favorite combo of mine recently has been eggs and spinach. Your actually the one who has turned me on to oatmeal and yogurt! Its becoming a problem. Especially when there is almond butter involved. Dates and strawberries! I like to stuff the strawberries with dates when Im not feeling lazy but if I am then I just take a bite of date and take a bite of strawberry. Coffee and cinnamon; on its own, in dessert seriously that combo rocks. Noodles and Im going to be boring and say spaghetti. Seriously can’t go wrong with that one. I actually haven’t had cereal in a while.. I used to love it and I think I kind of over did it; but I know I liked it with almond milk and banana and it HAS to be crunchy. Seriously the minute I pour the milk I am going to town on that sucker.

I am one of those people that always loves to try crazy combos! For the most part though I like to keep it pretty simple.

1 – Oatmeal AND salt! I grew up with my Scottish Dad making porridge with just oats, water and a pinch of salt. It tastes so good! I still love my oats like that, just these days I top them with sweet toppings like banana and nut butter. A perfect sweet/salty combo!

2 – Dates AND tahini with a pinch of salt. Again with the salt! I feel like the deep taste of the tahini and a little salt brings out the sweetness in the date and it tastes so goo! (even better if you microwave for 10 seconds (; )

3 – Coffee AND nothing because I’m allergic to caffeine )’:

4 – Noodles AND well this question confuses me, as in Australia noodles are strictly an Asian food that you have with stir frys, etc. but I think that you also call pasta noodles? Because I wouldn’t have Asian noodles with butter and cheese. Anyway, if it were the Asian type it would have to be ramen, and the pasta type would have to be a traditional spaghetti bolognaise.

5 – Cereal AND banana! I just love the combo!

6 – I can never decide how I like my cereal. It kind of changes everyday!

Oatmeal and BANANAS (Kath’s whipped banana oats, to be more specific. heavenly!)
Dates and WALNUTS (I only like dates in the form of this one date cake thingy thats in the cheese section of whole foods. It contains walnuts.)
Coffee and FROTH (Cappuccinos are my fave)
Noodles and MARINARA (It’s a sin to withhold the marinara when there’s plain pasta involved)
Cereal and 2% MILK (that’s the way I’ve had it all my life)
As for soggy vs. crunchy, I feel like it depends on the cereal. Like weetabix, I love soggy (is that weird?), but something like cornflakes should have some crunch.
