sad cats & happy spoons (ToL#203)

October 6, 2016 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 79 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Before we get on to the rest of the randomness, you NEED to take three minutes out of your day to watch this Sad Cat Diary video. I don’t even have a cat and I hit “laughing so hard you cry” status pretty darn quick. It’s perfect. Go watch!

[youtube=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKffm2uI4dk&w=640&h=427″]

2. Speaking of cats, would you consider yourself a cat person or a dog person? I used to be a die-hard dog person when I was younger, but the older I get, the more and more of a cat person I feel like I’m becoming. That being said, I’ll probably never actually be able to own a cat since I’m crazy allergic to them, but I have the impression that they’re a lot less work than dogs, which is super appealing at this point in life. That being said x2, I don’t know if I’ll ever want another pet in general. My dog is 14 now, and it completely crushes me whenever something is off with her or whenever I think of her her dying. I lost my last dog 9 years ago, and I still can’t look at dogs that look like her without getting emotional. Maybe I need to buy a turtle or something… don’t some of those live to be 100?

Ky Bean

3. Also old? My laptop… or at least that’s what I’m guessing is the cause of the battery dying so quickly. Doesn’t it last something like 3 hours out of the box? Mine just hit 4 years not too long ago, and it’s averaging about 1.5 and running kind of hot… but then it runs perfectly fine outside of that and isn’t slow or glitchy. Maybe its time for a new battery?

Edited to add: I actually restarted my laptop (since I never turn it off), and the battery seems back to normal. Veeeeeery curious 🤔

4. In happier news! This weekend is Thanksgiving for us up here in Canadaland, and… okay maybe it’s not super happier news since Canadian Thanksgiving just seems so underwhelming compared to American Thanksgiving. Ya know? It kind of shows up out of nowhere and no one really knows whether to celebrate it on Sunday or Monday or even at all. We always do, but because my family is European and Thanksgiving isn’t really a thing over in the homeland, my parents adopted this custom Thanksgiving dinner that never included things like stuffing, sweet potato casseroles, or pumpkin pie, and in recent years hasn’t even included turkey since no one likes to eat it 😂 But as long as there’s dessert, I’m a happy camper. I’m thinking of making some kind of variation of these bars.

Fudgy Flourless Pumpkin Pie Bars

5. Also Happy Camper inducing? New books!

empire-of-storms

I picked up the latest book in the Throne of Glass series last week, buuuuut I haven’t been able to start reading it because I’m sill trying to finish the book that I’m currently working on. Oi. It’s not even that it’s a horrible book… it’s just that what started out as an intriguing story lost all of its momentum and has just dragged on for waaaaay too long. That and the characters that I used to love just annoy the crap out of me now.

6. BUT! I’m determined to finish it, regardless. #1 because I’m way too invested at this point, and #2 because I don’t want to add to my list of unfinished books. There’s only ever been one book that I haven’t been able to finish, and that was Robinson Crusoe way back in university. I had to read it for one of my English classes, and… I just couldn’t get through it.

7. Something I have no problem getting through is that “cheesy” sauce that I posted last week. I haven’t always been eating it as mac and cheese, but I’ve lost count of what batch I’m on at this point because there’s literally always a jar of it in my fridge. Ob.sessed.

8. And that’s it for me today, friendly faces! I hope you’re having an awesome Thursday, and I’ll talk to you soon!

I need book recommendations- I was looking through my old bookcase and have a ton of non-fiction books which are so eerie- Google ‘wild swans’.

Also those cats…I wonder if I can face swap it with Donald Trump.

And those Pumpkin Bars look REALLY yummy, too!

I love seeing pictures of Kyah!! She’s so freaking cute. 🙂

I’m also more of a dog person but I agree that they are a ton of work. Plus the whole short life span thing royally sucks. Coco has been having some health problems lately (she’s going on 14 which is upper end for her breed) and it’s like she’s a completely different dog now. It’s so hard watching them grow old!

It really is 😕 Sometimes I forget that Ky is that old since she doesn’t really look it, but I’ll notice that she sleeps more and tires out a lot faster, and then it’s like… oh 🙁 And forget it if she starts acting off – I lose my mind.

Hahaha – that Cat Diary video is hilarious!!! There was one period in time, when for 4 consecutive services at the church I attend, they broke the congregation into cat people and dog people and showed videos to support/derail both groups – it was a hilarious 4 Sundays! I am a die-hard dog person – and one of mine is 11 and the vet sent me a letter to schedule her “senior” check-up and am in denial! Every time I see your dog, I cannot help but think wow – what a gorgeous specimen! And heck yeah – turtles like for ever – just read a blog post about them this morning! Now I’ve gotta check out your vegan sauce and ooh those bars! Happy Thanksgiving Amanda – hope your weekend is awesome!

Vets need to ease up on the senior talk. Omg! I took my pup in to get her shots a few years back, and the vet is like: “this might be the last time we see her.” Why would you say something like that!?

I’m totally a dog person! I really want to adopt one but I want to wait until I possibly start private practice so that we’re not always leaving our dog along for 8 hours a day while we’re at work.

I’ve been going back and forth on getting a dog for YEARS, and I think the main reason I don’t get one now is because I adore big dogs, and my place only allows smaller ones. Maybe one day when I move.

Dog AND cat person over here! I love cats because they are more independent and don’t need so much care and tim – on the other hand, going out with a dog, running and playing is pretty awesome too. Anyhow – I am not a pet person in general, being on the run almost constantly…..

Your comment about aging pets and considering changing to #teamcat hit me hard. January will be the 4th anniversary of the loss of my Queensland heeler, and I recently saw a dog — who I got to pet and love up –that looked so much like her in appearance and behavior that I was wrecked for most of the week.

My cure for aging pets ? More of them at the same time !

I have had multiple generations of Newfoundland and I found that each one teaches the next one the same games, the same responses…… so you can see bits of the older dogs peeking through.

My indestructible ball is on its 6th generation of dog gamers…,.

I find the same with cats….. we only have three generations of cats, but the hidey-holes are all carried down…

Happy Thanksgiving! I’m a dog person, but mostly because my mom is allergic to cats. If it’s a cute animal, I’m good, honestly, but I think dogs are worth the work. If a cat were that much work, I probably wouldn’t love that.
I don’t force myself to finish books anymore. There’s too much I want to read and do to bother if I’m not loving it, since I’m theoretically doing it for pleasure. I always forget that Robinson Crusoe is more than a stupid econ problem that you hear about for the whole core of the econ major. I don’t think I could read the book just because it’d bring back bad memories 😛

I never ever in my life thought I would have a cat, but mine is now 5 years old. I can confidently say that I am definitely a DOG person. Yes, cats are a million times easier (though we have a decent sized fenced in yard which makes dog owning pretty simple) but she’s a total bitch and not a fun, cuddly cat. So yes, my dog is obnoxious and clingy and needy, but my cat literally hunts me so there’s that.

Happy thanksgiving! It kind of makes more sense to me to have it when leaves are still on the trees — a turkey trot would be so pretty right now!

I’m an animal person. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get a new cat when Gizmo us gone, because of Bandit, and it will break my heart. I’ve always had cats. They are far less work, but that’s not why, I simply love cats (and thankfully neither of us is allergic).

I love dogs, too. I can’t imagine my life without them, either. Yes, it is heartbreaking when they leave, but sometimes a new animal can help heal your heart. Except Bandit, although I must say he keeps me busy enough (and my parents) that I think about Chester less (although in some ways he also reminds me of Chester).

The sad cat video really did have me laughing since I do have a cat and it’s spot on. And I thought some of those were just my cat! With 3 kids and no extra energy for me I know this will wind up being our last pet (he’s 14) even though so many people around us are getting dogs. And I still need to make that cheese sauce! I’m procrastinating 😉

      I can’t believe your kids aren’t bugging you for a dog! I bugged mine forrrr… 5 years before I got one 😆

I am definitely a cat person, though since living alone and without pets, I have had less nose problems, so I don’t know if that was because of having two cats at home or just all the dust…I plan to get a cat when I am more settled in one place and have hardware floors. I hate cleaning carpets!
Enjoy your Thanksgiving. I can’t believe how fast our Thanksgiving is coming up too! I don’t particularly like most traditional Thanksgiving food, except the Turkey, I do like, but I have never been a stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry fan. In the last couple years, my family makes the traditional stuff plus a few other different side dishes that I like more which is nice so that I don’t have just a plate of turkey and corn. haha.

My nose problems cleared up when I moved away from home too 😕 I’m definitely allergic to cats, and I think to dogs to a lesser extent. But I put up with that one because I adore them.

I will never be a cat person. since my dog died years ago, I also became not a dog person. I just can’t get over it and don’t want to replace her. my son really wants a dog though! it’s exciting that you have thanksgiving now. it’s also not fair that it’s not as big as our thanksgiving. I honestly didn’t even know you had a thanksgiving in Canada until you told me a few years ago.

Haha! Yeah it literally comes and goes and no one really makes a fuss about it. I think it’s more of an American thing anyways… we just picked it up as an excuse to eat more 😉

I thought I was a dog person because we always had dogs when I was growing up. Then I adopted a kitten and I realized how much I love cats! We actually just adopted a second cat this week and now I’m even more of a recluse than ever. I just want to be at home with my cats!

That’s adorable! And totally how it was for me growing up too. We always had dogs, and it wasn’t until I started hanging out with people who had cats that I realized how much I actually like them.

Your cheesy sauce looks interesting, and way healthier than the cheese I love to eat. I’m definitely more of a cat person and can’t wait until I can get one myself. My roommate’s allergic so I’m not getting one until I move!

It’s surprisingly cheesy! I mostly have to avoid dairy because it causes my eczema to flare, so this kind of stuff is a great alternative 🙂

My big thing this year has been audio books because I can listen to them on the way to work. It’s been great and helped me get more reading done, because every time I start a physical book, I just can’t get myself to make time to read it as much as I want to. I always think I will before bed and then I get hooked in a show, writing or other project and go to bed exhausted at the time I want to go to bed. The struggle…

I love reading before bed because otherwise I have a hard time falling asleep, but I actually wouldn’t mind getting into audio books for when I’m driving or doing things around the house!
