. thinking out loud #28 .

by Amanda @ .running with spoons. on April 25, 2013

1. Promise no to judge me when I show you what I’m about to show you. Promise?! Okay…

Yogurt Container Collection

That right there will give you a pretty good idea of how much yogurt I go through on a regular basis. I was getting my recycling all prepped to throw out when I came across that collection and couldn’t help but laugh. That’s a good 3 weeks worth of yogurt containers, but still… I guess it’s no secret as to what one of my favorite foods is…

2. I’ll let you in on another random little secret… I love the feeling that comes with using something up.

Finished Products

I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something so satisfying about finishing a product off. Maybe it’s the fact that I can get rid of some clutter? Or maybe it’s because it means I can go shopping and buy something new ;) Whatever it is, it’s one of those random little things that makes life good.

3. Speaking of shopping, how about a little grocery haul? I don’t do these too often anymore (hauls, not grocery trips – I usually make 2 a week), but I’m kind of nosy when it comes to what other people buy, so I thought I’d share a random mid-week trip with you guys too.

Groceries1

Apples, cherry tomatoes, mixed baby greens, cucumber, baby carrots, bananas, watermelon.

Groceries2

Wonderbread whole wheat loaf, Rudi’s multigrain English muffins, Barefruit apple chips, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest, Maisie Jane’s smooth almond butter.

Groceries3

Synergy Kombucha in Trilogy and Divine Grape, Simply Natural salsa, Rabbit River Farms eggs, Oikos plain Greek yogurt, deli chicken.

4. The biggest problem with the above haul? Bad apples. I like using Ambrosia apples when I make my homemade applesauce, but my store was all out when I went. Sad face. There was a time where I probably would have driven to another store just to get the exact ones that I wanted, but that kind of thing sounds like way too much effort these days. Instead, I settled for Galas, and my applesauce definitely wasn’t as tasty. Whatever; I’ll live. But it was salt in the wound when I came across this little gem stuck to my seat at Bux…

Ambrosia Sticker

Someone has been eating my Ambrosias. Bugger.

5. Someone has also been playing nasty tricks on my city. I was driving home on Tuesday afternoon when I came across this scene right here:

Edmonton Bomb Threat

That would be the bomb squad. They had to evacuate and close off one of the busiest bus terminals in Edmonton to investigate a suspicious package after someone allegedly showed up, dropped a backpack, and just walked away. The backpack ended up containing nothing more than clothing, books, and personal items, but seriously… who in their right mind would play a trick like that? Not funny.

6. Spam comments, on the other hand, can be extremely funny…

Get Rid of Man Boobs

7. As can the most random facts…

Cost of Falling in Love

… Although that one seems a little sad I suppose…

8. Perfect apartment dancing music, right here. No shame.

9. Feel free to laugh, but I think this may just be the most exciting purchase I’ve made all month…

Electric Toothbrush

I’m really thorough when it comes to my oral health. Brushing 2+ times a day, flossing every day, using a Sulcabrush, visiting the dentist regularly… On my last visit, the topic of electric toothbrushes came up and my dentist said they’re way more effective than brushing manually, so I stopped by the store on the way home and picked one up. Not cheap, but seeing as I’m all sorts of terrified of the dentist, I’d rather invest in preventative measures than face problems down the road. One root canal is more than enough for this girl.

10. Oh, and about that haircut that I mentioned last week

Haircut

Drastic, isn’t it? ;) I ended up wimping out and just going in for a regular trim. Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to say goodbye to my long locks and embrace a pixie cut, but for now? *twirls hair around fingers* I need the extra comfort… Oh, and please excuse the “it’s 9 PM and I’m exhausted after being out of the house for 12 hours” look. Yesterday was a long day.

Happy Thursday!

. – . – . – .

What’s one food you eat a LOT of? And I mean a lot, a lot…
Three things you bought on your last grocery trip:
What’s your favorite kind of apple?

Haha I relate to all the yogurt containers you have going on because I never recycle stuff like that, just because you never know when you’ll need a plastic container!
I guess that makes me a hoarder of them.
Spam comments are the death of me there are always SO many, but at least some of them can be funny;)
I love all your grocery buys! Mine resemble basically the same, minus yogurt. Still sad about that.
I like the trim! I never go for drastic hair cuts either, I love my long hair, and I feel like a little piece of me would die if I cut it. I’m not dramatic at all…
Talk to you later :)

I’ve actually almost given up on going through my spam comments looking for actual people. I haven’t found anyone there in weeks and it’s getting kind of annoying to constantly be checking them.

I like your hair! But I think you’d look good with a pixie cut too. I always end up getting a trim. Safer that way, so I don’t have to risk hiding under a hat for a month. You go through yogurt about as fast as I go through ice cream. Pick your poison, I guess ;) I love grocery shopping and I average 4 trips a week to 2-3 different stores… I may have an addiction.

One food I make sure to stock up on is peanut butter. I go through about a jar a week so I usually buy at least 3 at a time. I should really just buy stock in the company because I am giving them so much profits haha. Btw, if you bring back six empty Mac containers to their store, you get a free lipstick. Recycling and free makeup is awesome in my book :)

I love MAC’s recycling program! But their products tend to last me a long time so I don’t gather up that many empties too fast. And is it only lipstick at your counter? Over here it’s either lipstick or eyeshadow.

I’m right there eith you on the yogurt. We each have one every morning so 14 a week. I spend like $30 on yogurt every week. :/ It’s an easy way to get protein into my vegetarian diet though. If you love finishing products, you would love Kiehls. They take back empty bottles and after you’ve turned in 10, yo get a free gift. I get very excited when I finish one now!

I eat a ton of nut butter…I buy at least one new jar a week and currently have 8 in rotation (eek I know!!!): coconut peanut butter, dark chocolate peanut butter, cinnamon raisin peanut butter, fresh ground peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, maple almond butter, chocolate almond butter. Sheesh that’s a lot. I eat at least 5 tbsp of the stuff throughout the course of the day. It’s just so good, and quite healthy for me since I’m active. I also eat a ton of Greek yogurt, at least three big tubs a week. And broccoli. And applesauce
My last grocery haul was yesterday and included: almond butter packets, gluten-free granola bars, string cheese, mushrooms, broccoli and sliced roast chicken. Pretty random!
My favorite apples, by far, are granny smiths! I love gravenstein in applesauce, though

Reply

13 Amanda @ .running with spoons. April 25, 2013 at 10:30 am

I would probably have that big of a nut butter rotation if I could, too! Unfortunately, allergies limit me to only a few jars :( Pesky things…

haha you are definitely a yogurt addict, aren’t you? ;-) Right now I go through a container of the stuff every 1-2 weeks, but lately I’ve been trying the little flavoured ones too. And I’m going back to London the weekend after this one, so I’m going to search Costco for the giant containers of Coconut Oikos again :-D
I think I’m the same way with eggs. Eric and I go through a flat (so 30 eggs) every two weeks, but I usually have to ration by the end of it. Farmers market eggs = unbeatable.

I’ve been using an electric toothbrush for years and I love it. I can always feel the difference when I use a manual now – not nearly as clean-feeling.

As for apples, I’m with you on the Ambrosia. Although Pink Cripps and Honeycrisp are pretty high up there as well. And I’m absolutely buying more apples this weekend to make another batch of applesauce. Because I’m now hooked, clearly ;-)

I’m going to be an open book and say that applesauce is one food I eat A LOT of…and funny enough, I love making it with Galas! If I’m eating apples raw, Pink Lady’s are my favorite- they’re so sweet and crisp! As long as the apple is not mealy or tart, I’ll take it! I hate going to the store when they’re outta stock of one of my favorites. Fortunately that wasn’t the case in my last grocery trip and 3 things I bought were: apples (gala), Lindt 70% dark chocolate and oats!

I actually have a bit of a compulsive problem about finishing off things – I hate having things half-done so I’ll spend hours consecutively on a paper just to ‘tick it off’ the list. Trouble is that it often means I rush things, and also the through-line of my argument gets lost because my thoughts are somewhat tangential unless I walk away and pick up the patterns of going off-track before they happen. Same with food – it’s not a badge of honour to finish off a container of something! Sorry, I have to keep reminding myself of that…but I still do it. Which is why jars of nut butter are no good for me – I have a permanent ‘itch’ in my head that I HAVETOFINISHALLOFIT and it won’t go away. I always want to make OIAJ too and just using empty washed nut butter jars isn’t the same…so I can’t buy nut butter for myself, or anything really calorie dense that comes in a container (I mean, if I eat an entire bag of lettuce who cares, you know?)

Food I eat a lot of? Peanut flour and applesauce! I always use Ambrosia or Pink Lady apples :) I can see why Galas wouldn’t work though as they’re too sweet and watery #applesaucefail ;)

Ugh. Unfinished papers were always hell to me too. The only difference is that thinking about it would stress me out so much that I’d put them off as long as humanely possible just so I wouldn’t have to deal with them… Aaaaand consequently stress myself out even more when I tried to get them done at the last minute.

Okay, this is getting weird.

I found your blog several months back from the Healthy Diva Eats blog (who, interestingly, I ran into at TJ’s just a couple weeks after discovering and becoming a regular reader of her blog!).

Each time you post I feel like we have more in common. I had an ED in high school (about 20 years ago, wow) but have been fully recovered for many, many years now. I can relate to all the things you write about regarding ED recovery.

I like almost all of the foods you post about. Cereal, yogurt, fruit; these are staples, for sure.

And the dentist thing. LOL! I can sooo relate! I had a lot of cavities as a kid and developed a bit of a phobia. Guess where I was this morning? Getting a root canal! My first and LAST, I hope!

I brush my teeth multiple times a day. Floss daily. I’ve been through so many mechanical toothbrushes, but just the battery ones, which always die super fast. I need to suck it up and invest in a good one that I can plug in.

Are you happy with the one you bought?

Now, I am about 10 years older than you (I am 37) and I have a wonderful husband and 4 amazing little boys. So maybe your future holds some of that. ;)

Love your haircut! Hey since you always give great hair and makeup advice can you recommend a flat iron for straightening hair?

I really like the one I have from GHD http://www.sephora.com/classic-1-inch-styler-P260921?skuId=1236637 It’s kind of pricey, but I’ve had mine forever and it’s still good as new. Whichever one you decide to go with, I definitely recommend something with a 1″ rounded barrel for easier styling, and making sure it’s ceramic plated.

I eat a LOT of avocado, peanut butter, and produce. Oh and bread. Give me all of those things and I’d be a happy, well-fed girl :)

The last 3 things that I bought today were: cantaloupe, a Sbucks cappuccino, and veggie burgers. How exciting?!

My papa is a fisherman- so my family eats fish or seafood practically everyday! I love it though and crave it! I love going out on the boat with him too- it’s very freeing. I love your hair- your beautiful face can carry any hair do! Three things I purchased were- granny smith apples (my favourite), olive oil and local grass fed buffalo mince. I also eat an amazing amount of eggs- whole eggs too! It’s not common at all to just use the white exclusively here, I can eat 4-6 whole eggs a day! especially with my little bro back in hospital we have a lot of frittata because it travels well :). I hope that’s not true about losing 2 friends when you fall in love! I don’t have an abundance of close friends so I think I will work hard at keeping them when I get swept off my feet next ;) love Sophia

Your #1- totally not judging. In fact, I love it.
I eat so many apples I cannot tell you how many times I’ve found their stickers on my shoes, clothes, bags, etc.
I also love that you read your spam comments too :)

Haha! You’re collection of yogurt containers looks like MY collection of cottage cheese containers (at least in the pasts…I’ve kinda lost interest lately). And omg, I am the SAME way when it comes to finishing stuff up! I thought I was just a weirdo! Haha…no offense! ;)

Love that song! I’ve never heard of that singer before…very modern day Madonna-looking…but wow, what a voice! You really have great taste in music…I swear I played that Pentatonix cover of Imagine Dragons like 5 times yesterday! lol

I know the feeling of fear when it comes to the locks…I used to be the same way! But now I’m just like, eh it’ll grow back! For what it’s worth, I think a pixie cut would look SO GOOD on you!

What’s one food you eat a LOT of? CEREAL…and yogurt…but that’s only so I can justify the CEREAL! Hahaha!
Three things you bought on your last grocery trip: Almond milk, peanut butter, and can you guess? CEREAL!! Actually…there was a sale…and I kinda maybe came home with like 5 boxes! 8O
What’s your favorite kind of apple? It used to be a Honeycrisp, but they’re too sweet for me now…same with galas. I really like Pinata apples but it’s hard to find them in organic!

I know it grows back, but… but… it takes so long! And there are so many awkward stages along the way! I would have to look into investing in a wig, but it’s really windy around here…

i grocery shop once a week, so last I went was Sunday and i got a ton – my boyfriend and I eat completely different so my grocery trips include lots of stuff! tons of produce as always though. I got a ton of strawberries because they are super cheap/on sale right now!
and sadly i am allergic to apples. depressing, i know!

Nope! I just stack them so they’ll take up less space in my recycling bag and then toss the whole stack out when the bag is ready to be tossed.

Never mind, girl – I think you rock the long layered cut!

Uh and I love ridiculous spam. Just worked through the mail-address-folder of my companies advertisement address (which we use to send out newsletters and stuff) and it is so funny how many junk mails we get back in return, offering job opportunities in East Europe with ridiculous high payment and of course a lot of the classic Viagra advertisement. Guess its karma – you send ads out, you get ads back.

Oh my goodness- YES! I’m glad that I’m not the only person who is obsessed with finishing things off. It just feels so good to know that I used (or ate) every last drop of something- I can’t stand wasting! My roommate constantly buys a ton of groceries that she doesn’t eat and winds up throwing them out when they expire. It drives me nuts!
And I don’t blame you for sticking with a similar haircut- change is scary! I’ve always secretly wanted to chop mine off but I probably never will.

I actually love to see what groceries people are buying at the store. I’m always casually (at least I think it’s casual) checking out other people’s grocery carts.
The random fact was sad and maybe a bit true.
Last, I’m not even a little bit appalled by your yogurt collection, especially because you are recycling them all, which makes me happy. I just started composting, so I’ve gone to a whole new realm of greenness.

Aww, your hair “wimp out” sounds all too familiar. ;) I think I mentioned this once before, but I’ve been toying with the idea of making a drastic change for years, and I have yet to make ONE. Today I went to the salon, and was *this* close to chopping 4-5 inches off my hair, but of course chickened out and only had my stylist take off two. One of these days I’ll muster up the nerve…Hey, how about we play that “if you do it, I’ll do it too” game? I’ll let you go first. ;)

In all seriousness though, your hair looks great–love the layers! You know what else looks great? All those yogurt containers…There was a time when my consumption levels were comparable, but I was forced to cut back several months ago (darn tummy). Now, instead of yogurt carton stacks, I have egg carton stacks, It’s almost embarrassing how many eggs I eat each week…I’m guessing about 3-4 dozen (1-2 whole eggs each day + 6-10 whites). Occasionally they’re the only protein my stomach can tolerate, so thank goodness they’re cheap!

I’m glad to hear you’ve jumped on board the electric toothbrush train. I’m a huge fan!

Happy almost-Friday, Amanda! <3

That’s a lot of yoghurt pots!!! A couple of years ago I had to wait a week to get a tooth pulled and ended up living off of yoghurt and soups because I couldn’t chew anything. Ever since then I’ve not been quite so addicted to yoghurt, but my tower of pots was pretty similar to yours that week!

Girl, I know exaaactly what you’re talking about! – It’s the best feeling for me when I use up a complete stick of lip balm. It’s like that feeling when you check something off your to-do list. ahh.
And, thats so mean of the person to leave the ambrosia sticker on the chair at starbucks – Way to tease you! Hopefully Ambrosia’s are back in stock on your next grocery run. My favorite apple is probably just a crisp gala. Has to be crisp though.
The one food I used to eat a TON of was eggs. But I think I went a bit overboard on it. So now it’s just fruit for me. I eat a ton of fruit everyday. From berries to bananas and everything in between.

Haha ok for a second I thought that watermelon was about to fall off the table in that picture! And then I realized that the table was actually clear lol. Three things I bought on my last grocery trip were hummus, real fresh roasted deli turkey, and some whole wheat wraps – I needed ingredients to make a lunch after my morning of moving!

Ambrosia apples are the best – ’nuff said ;)

Don’t worry, most of us are attached to our hair. Secretly, at least half of us want to try a pixie but we’re scared! Even though, yes, it’s just hair…but still…what if I look ugly??! Yes it’ll grow back, but it’ll take a while!!

I eat a lot of yogurt too…like entire tubs with entire jars of peanut butter and cookies …at midnight or in afternoon or whatever…

sigh…

Anywayyyy…..I wish I could buy organic…I’ve dumped it and nothing organic anymore. Just can’t afford it and tired of being so “afraid”…I bought these “Schneider chicken burgers” the other day , something I’d normally never do (chicken burgers from a box…like “canned chicken”, ha…to me it would be horrendous)…and I don’t give a flying fig anymore…I fried up the burgers and ate a couple and I’ll eat em again. Tired tired tired of being the stupid food police. Tired of visiting blogs that preach about pastured pork and wild fish and organic, hormone-free eggs and chicken and dairy-free and blah blah blah…so tired of it…yes, I’m over 30 and digestively, metabolically and hormonally a mess, but I don’t care…my mental well being and stress is MORE important….I’m starting to think that FAITH and MENTALITY mean SO MUCH more in approaching health than stupid food…so eat the damn entire pizza (yes I eat entire “Ristorante” pizzas at 800+ calories each FOLLOWED by a pint of ice cream, bag of chocolate covered almonds and jars of peanut butter slathered on — gasp == gluten filled bread)…and no I don’t exercise…and no I can’t poop (oops, vulgar word)….and yes, I’m over 30 …..and I need to NOT care, but I’m tired of living my life in this cycle of fear….I will release and let myself GO GO GO ….no matter how long it takes and no matter how big I balloon to….in the end, I will strike some kind of peace and balance again…I have to believe that…
