I’m currently writing this under the influence of caffeine, so apologies in advance if I come across as being a little crazier than normal 😯

I don’t understand it. I only drink a cup a day in the morning, and it’s half-decaf. Either the baristas at Starbucks are messing with me or I’m becoming more sensitive to caffeine in my old age (jokes). Or maybe I’m just in a good mood because the weather is gorgeous (we hit 17C/63F yesterday!) and I can enjoy my delicious chocolate smoothies without shivering uncontrollably afterwards. Winning.

So hey! Happy What I Ate Wednesday! If you’re wondering about the title of today’s post, rest assured that it doesn’t refer to any fiascos involving self-tanner. It also has nothing to do with the book that uses ‘grey’ in place of ‘orange,’ as I haven’t read it and don’t really have any plans to. We’re talking orange foods on the blog today, since I’m apparently somewhat obsessed with them. Yesterday in particular was quite orangey (the fact that this is an actual word boggles my mind), so let’s take a look!

WIAW

Breakfast… honey & Golden Delicious apples…

Golden Honey Oats

Eggy bananafied oats cooked in coconut milk, then layered with plain Greek yogurt and topped with homemade applesauce, honey, cinnamon, and almond butter.

Okay. So I know there isn’t technically anything orange in my beloved bowl of oats, but I’m going to go ahead and argue that golden honey and Golden Delicious apples totally count. I know I could have done something like pumpkin oats, but… ’tis not the season, and to be honest, I’m not really the biggest fan. Ive tried adding pumpkin puree to my oats on a few occasions, and I’m pretty sure my body is just against the idea of eating vegetables before 7 AM. There are those times where I’ll get hit with a craving for carrots at 7:23 AM, but it always happens after breakfast — never at or before.

Morning snack… dried persimmons…

Yogurt and Persimmons

Plain Greek yogurt and dried persimmons.

I’ve only tried fresh persimmons on two occasions. The first one was delicious, and the second one tasted like licking a toilet seat (or what I’d imagine licking a toilet seat would taste like seeing as I’ve never actually tried it myself). That being said, I can’t form a solid opinion of fresh persimmons until I have a few more trials to judge by. Until that happens, I can say that dried persimmons (I keep spelling this wrong!!!) taste sweet and delicious, especially when contrasted by the tartness of plain yogurt.

Lunch… macaroni and cheese… and approximately 5 pieces of chopped carrots! πŸ˜€

Mac and Cheese

For reasons unbeknown to me, I feel like I’ve been seeing mac and cheese all over the blog world lately. Actually, scratch that — I know exactly why that is. You know how when you want something you suddenly start to notice it everywhere? It was a sign that it’s been far too long since I’ve had a fix…. and I fixed that πŸ˜‰ I know there are healthier sources of orange foods out there, but not for the soul… Not for the soul. 

Afternoon snack… roasted kabocha…

Roasted kabocha with Justin’s classic almond butter.

I’ve pretty much come to terms with the fact that my kabocha addiction will never die. Fall, winter, spring, summer… I crave it no matter what kind of mood Mother Nature happens to be in. I will say that certain squashes are better than others, though. See how that squash up there looks almost flaky? That’s my favourite texture — dry and crumbly. I’m really not a huge fan of the ones that are, for lack of a better word, wetter 😯

Dinner… savoury sweet potato…

Avocado Sweet Potato

A sweet potato topped with mashed avocado alongside some ground garlic/ginger chicken and veggies.

When I broke my savoury sweet potato virginity last week, a lot of people mentioned how amazing it tasted when paired with avocado. Obviously I had to test this out for myself, and I’m going to have to go with the majority opinion on this one — it’s delicious. My only complaint is that I was out of salsa and the only beans I had on hand were chickpeas so I couldn’t make one of the fully loaded Mexican stuffed sweet potatoes that I’ve been seeing floating around the blog world. One day…

Evening snack… chocolate :mrgreen: …

Milk and Chocolate

Green & Black’s Maya Gold chocolate with a cup of warm vanilla almond milk.

I know what you’re thinking… chocolate isn’t orange! But there’s a whole lot more to this little bar than meets the eye. It’s the Maya  Gold bar from Green & Black’s, meaning it’s laced with orange extract πŸ˜‰ Sneaky… and delicious. The nutmeg and cinnamon add a nice touch, and make for a perfectly comforting snack before closing up shop for the night… especially when paired with a warm glass of milk.

    I am really glad you decided to describe the poopy kabocha as wetter instead of a word which starts with “m” and ends with “oist”. Shiver.

    I first tried persimmons over winter break, and I LOVED them. Then again, maybe we just got a good batch or something. I’ve never seen dried ones–I’m going to have to hunt those down. (Any idea where I can hunt those down?)

    I LOVE avocado in baked sweet potatoes! I used to think that was so odd but after the first bite….I was hooked! I may have to try a persimmon. Never had one but hoping it doesn’t taste like toilet seat! πŸ™‚

    1) … orange? Im going to have to agree with you and say Kabocha.
    2) … red? Strawberries. Always Strawberries.
    3) … green? Avocado all the way. Its just so stinkin good.
    4) … yellow? Agreeing with you yet again; Bananas because it would almost be wrong not to.
    5) … white? Greek Yogurt. I can easily go through a container a day.
    6) … brown/tan? Almond butter. That stuff is good and I cannot imagine a life without it.
    7) … blue/violet? Purple grapes! Ok technically they are called red but I mean c’mon they look more purple to me.

    Why you sneaky little…! Trust you to bring such a concrete argument to the table on your veiw of orangey <- I had nooo idea that was a legit word.
    I have recently found that I prefer having ORANGE sweet potatoes savory…and leaving white sweet potatoes and squash to team up with my nut butter. And now I've got kabocha envy..boooh!

    2) red? Kit Kat – it comes in a red wrapper right!?
    3) green? spinach.
    4) yellow? bananas.

    That first ‘orange’ brings up a question: which honey do you us/ what’s your favourite kind? Honey is not honey after all – at least not for conoisseurs like you :). Now that I just rediscovered how amazing honey is I’m excited to do a little taste testing experimentation.

    I’m all up for a little colour favourite game though we don’t happen to differ too much – are all bloggers probably the same ;)?!
    My favourite food that’s…
    1) … orange? Kabocha. [I had to steal it because there’s no better one]
    2) … red? Strawberries.
    3) … green? Broccoli AND bok choy.
    4) … yellow? Bananas.
    5) … white? Coconut butter (!). Shredded coconut isn’t a favourite of mine.

    6) … brown/tan? Maybe it’s odd but most of my favourite foods fall into this category: brown: Chocolate/ cocoa!! / white: oat bran / tan: white (!) almond butter

    7) … blue/violet? Blueberries [and I can’t wait for the season to start!].

    Just as an aside your description of persimmon taste is … interesting. I’d say the same goes for papaya.

      Buckwheat honey is DEFINITELY my favourite. I like other kinds too, but I definitely don’t go gaga over them like I do over buckwheat. And, as anti HLB as it is, brown foods are definitely the best πŸ˜‰

        Okay, after searching high and low for the coveted – or apparently not so much – liquid gold I still have yet to find buckwheat honey. Is it harder to find than other kinds over there, too, or do I have to blame the honey choices over here?

          I guess it’s a little harder, yeah. I only really see it in a few health food stores over here, but I was able to find some the last time I visited Poland, so it does exist!

    I’ve unintentionally done this before! I try to go by the “eat the rainbow” rule, but sometimes I’ll notice my lunch bag is full of carrot sticks, sunburst baby tomatoes, a sweet potato, and greek yogurt with mangoes. And then I have tangerine tea when I get to work. We’re gonna turn into oompa loompas if we’re not careful!

    Man I really miss persimmons. My daddy has a tree, so usually when I go up there he gives me BAGS full, but since my schedule is so weird this year, I haven’t been able to snag anyway. Sad face πŸ™ I was really looking forward to some persimmon smoothies!! And I kid you not, this mac and cheese thing must be a virus because my mom MADE me take her to the store yesterday so she could buy some. She was craving mac and cheese hardcore! lol

      Can you believe that I’ve actually managed to avoid changing colours? Probably because I definitely don’t eat like this every day πŸ˜† And how could I forget about yogurt?! Omg. That’s easily my favourite white food. Going back to change that…

    I know I said it before, but I can not even believe that I had kabocha this fall maybe 3 times – it’s SO rare here and now it’s gone anyway. And I totally agree the drier and crumblier the better!!
    Orange Food – As said – kabocha or pumpkin
    Red – gummy bears (sorry πŸ™‚
    Green – asparagus
    yellow – M&M’s
    White – Quark
    Brown – Ragusa Chocolate
    Blue Violet – Blieberries, Plums, Blackberries (yeah, they’re black, but you know…..)

    My favorite food that is orange is related to your favorite…mine is pumpkin! I have such a hard time finding kabocha but am always thrilled when I do. I also haven’t read (nor have plans to read) ‘that’ book. I haven’t had sweet potato in a long long time. It looks great with avocado though. I hate when I run out if salsa. I use it or actually daily though so I go through it like water!!

    Oh that sweet potato looks amazing. But belivΓ©ve you’ll never look back after your first mexican stuffed sweet potato! Make sure you have enough hot sauce and cheese at hand! That’s half the fun πŸ™‚

    I’ve been buying two kabochas a week for the the past…6 months or so? I only bought one this last weekend, so naturally, it’s long gone and I’m kicking myself for that. And I don’t think I’ve ever tried a persimmon, to be honest. Should I change that?

    Orange food: kabocha. of course…and I 100% blame blogs for this one.

    yellow: bananas.
    white: coconut.
    brown/tan: chocolate.
    blue: blueberries.

    So basically, with orange/yellow/white/blue, we’re basically the same person πŸ˜‰ Soulmates? I think so! :-p

      The kabochas we’ve been getting lately have been teeny tiny! So much so that I can almost finish 1 a day πŸ˜† And persimmons… not my favourite fruit by a long shot, but always worth a try!

    Lots of colors in todays posts…..especially Lindsays pink and your orange πŸ™‚ Orange foods are usually pretty darn good. I really try to consume the colors of the rainbow, and I think that is a wonderful way to get the nutrients you need, as well as looking pretty of course πŸ™‚

    I’m fairly certain Starbucks coffee has methamphetamine in it. Even a tall coffee pushes me over the edge and I turn into a jittery lunatic.

    Have you ever tried making sweet potato nachos? You must!! So good. I like your blog questions today.

    1) … orange? ……. tequila sunrise?
    2) … red? cherries
    3) … green? Broccoli.
    4) … yellow? pineapple
    5) … white? Coconut. White wine.
    6) … brown/tan? Chocolate! Bread! Cookies! Donuts!
    7) … blue/violet? Blueberries.

    I completely share your view on the marvelous flakiness of kabocha… the flakier and crumblier the better!
    shame we only had kabocha for a grand total of two weeks this year here in Italy T.T

    You should never play with your food…and that includes colours.

    Can this blog post be considered racism? My orange coloured hands think so, thanks to the carrots, kabocha and pumpkin consumption.

    I’m praying you won’t jump on the sweet potato bandwagon…you were one of a few who appreciated the white spud. DON’T GO TO THE DARK SIDE. (orange side rather).

      Can you believe that I’ve managed to avoid turning shades? I’m not sure if I should be happy or sad. My skin just rejects any colour other than Casperesque — even tans πŸ™ And no worries… Spud love isn’t going anywhere.
