thinking out loud #217

January 12, 2017 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 28 Comments

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. You know what’s kind of a pain in the butt? After deleting the Jetpack plugin because of the issues it was causing my site (no crashes since!), I lost the ability to embed YouTube videos into my posts. Most random thing ever, but it’s a pain because now if I want to share a song that I’ve been crushing on big time with you guys, I have to actually give you the link and tell you to click over… whiiiiiiich seems like it has a way lower chance of actually happening. BUT! If you haven’t listened to the new Ed Sheeran song, then you definitely need to change that because it’s kind of amazing.

Shape of You

2. Also, I have no idea if it’s actually new or has been out for a while, because I basically live under a rock when it comes to anything TV/music/celebrity related. I’m okay with this.

3. What I’m not so okay with [anymore] is waking up at 4:30 or 5 AM. I don’t know if it’s the fact that it stays dark for so long in the morning or that I really just enjoy my late nights that much, but I’ve been staying up ‘till around 1AM on most night and waking up at 6:30 or 7, which I enjoy so much more. The day doesn’t feel as ridiculously long, and the me time I get at night has become my favourite thing in the world.

4. Scratch that. Second favourite thing in the world. First thing is this new maple syrup I picked up the other day a while back.I mean, I thought it was the other day, but looking at how much of it is already gone, I hope it was a while back 😂 And I know, I know… it’s just maple syrup. But I’m Canadian. I live for this stuff and I have a habit of sporadically becoming infatuatuated with things 😜 But seriously, though… can we please take a moment to admire the fanciness of this packaging? Because I don’t think I’ve ever come across a bottle of maple syrup that looks like a bottle of wine. And the best part is that it does actually taste 100x better than a bunch of other ones I’ve tried.

Fancy Maple Syrup

5. Something I’ve noticed – I don’t get eggshell pieces into the bowl when I crack eggs anymore. Now, this could be for 1 of 2 reasons. Either I’ve just gotten better at cracking eggs with all the practice I’ve had over the years, or they’ve started selectively breeding chickens to produce eggs that don’t splinter into 1000 tiny pieces when you crack them, and the pieces actually stick to that membrane that surrounds the egg (sorry to hit you with that one). Either way, I’ll take it.

6. And, yes, these are legit the random things that run through my mind that I think are worth telling you guys. I’m sorry, but not really sorry at all 😜

7. I am really sorry to anyone who tries texting me and it takes me like 4-7 days to respond, though. You guys… I don’t know what it is but I’ve just become so averse to picking up my phone lately. I can just barely manage (delayed) texting, and I’ve completely stopped checking social media at regular intervals… which is probably not the best thing considering the nature of my work, but I just need a bit of a detox.

8. And this last one is more for me than you, but I need to remember to pick up another jar of Laura Mercier translucent setting powder because I’m all out and that stuff is life. And yes, my jar has been through a lot in its lifetime…

Setting Powder

9. Wait! I lied. That’s not the last one because I just remembered that I promised to show you guys a picture of the first batch of muffins that came out of my new oven, so…

Muffin Fails

Don’t judge me. But DO have an amazing day 😀

I am so hit or miss with eggshells. I actually find if I crack them harder I am less likely to get shells than if I do it too gently.
If I don’t repsond to text immediately I am probably going to forget about it for a few days…

I’m still getting used to my oven after 8 years. I have to increase temps 25 degrees & bake almost everything at least 5 minutes longer. AND it’s a convection oven! Isn’t that crazy?

I am not a power user when it comes to my phone. I will return texts in a more timely fashion, but half the time when I’m home it’s not even on — we have an internet phone, I don’t have unlimited anything on my phone, so my husband calks more often than texts. And I FB message friends fairly often.

I totally get you about not wanting to be connected 24/7. Sometimes, I just want to “accidentally” leave my phone at home too. Take the time, my dear. You deserve some uninterrupted time.

    Those muffins cracked me up!

I’ve noticed the same thing about the eggs. They don’t shatter as badly, but maybe it’s because I use them faster? Fresh eggs stick better and older eggs tend to be more fragile. Also, I just learned I can’t put the shells down our disposal because the membrane clogs the pipes. Nice.

Ah those muffins lol! With eggshells I still haven’t gotten it yet, which is weird considering how many eggs I crack. Need to focus more I guess 🙂

Not getting eggs in the batter takes serious skills Amanda; I almost always get eggs in. And I love that you’re getting later wake up calls so you can sleep more? Although 5 or 6 hours of sleep does sound like it’s still not a ton of sleep. Oh, and that maple syrup sounds good!

Oh real maple syrup is sooooo much better than anything I find in the store. My husband grew up in upstate NY like 15 minutes from Canada, so we always get some and maple creams when we go to his home.

Real Canadian maple syrup cannot be beat! That stuff is liquid gold but so expensive in the states, but oh so worth it. Fake maple syrup here tastes like cough syrup lol.

That maple looks legit! I need to try it now.

I forgot to comment the other day about the convection oven. I love to bake. I have been baking for years, and I actually READ cookbooks, blah blah blah. I have NEVER known this about baking and convection ovens… so thank you, my friend; you have saved a lot of ugly muffins from being born and probably my sanity (probably) 🙂

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve listened to both “Shape of you” and “Castle on the hill” – my repeat button is literally broken. Ed is my ginger man for life – there is just no one like him out there!

Those muffins crack me up. That’s how my baking looks all the time. I don’t know how you survive on so little sleep! Sometimes I wish I could so I had more hours in the day, but I need my sleep at night or I am a non functioning human.

I love that setting powder! I’m a fan of that paired with her Candle glow perfecting powder. I picked it up because I was trying to find a cheaper alternative to the Hourglass ambient lighting powder. No complaints so far…

I have several different translucent powders and I still don’t fully understand how they work. I use them, but don’t see/feel a difference? Hmm… love all of your random facts in your head. So where did you get the syrup?

It is interesting that it’s become the norm in society to deal with always being connected. It can be very exhausted and it’s good to take a break when you need it 😉 The other thing is winter. Boo. I hate this time of year. I get up for work this morning at 7 and it’s already dark, by the time I get home it’s already sunset. I live for summer and warmer weather…

I’m home sick today and decided to see what time my body naturally wanted to wake up (after going to bed at, um, 8:30)—turned out that was 6:30 a.m. Haha probably when the NyQuil wore off, but it was so cool to wake up when it was almost light out instead of pitch-dark for a change!

For some odd reason, the wonky muffin picture makes me happy. Also, I need to get your eggs because I cracked a bunch of shells into my last batch and had to fish them out.
