. WIAW … questionable cravings .

by Amanda @ .running with spoons. on February 6, 2013

Oh for crying out loud…

I’ve been sitting here for something like fifteen minutes twiddling my thumbs while trying to come up with a clever way to start today’s post, and my efforts have been in vain – I’ve got nothing. Nada. Zip. I think my brain is still feeling a little bit fried after yesterday’s commenting etiquette post, which I really loved reading your guys’ comments on, by the way. It’s a delicate issue that doesn’t really seem to have a clear cut answer. Definitely some food for thought.

But today, we’re going to switch gears and talk about food for the body - it is WIAW after all…

WIAW I tried to come up with a theme for this week’s WIAW, but quickly realized that my eats over the past little while have had no real rhyme or reason. Aside from starting and ending the day with cereal…

Cereal Mess

Breakfast: plain Greek yogurt, banana, blueberries, cinnamon Puffins, Kashi Honey Sunshine, roasted almond butter.

Bedtime Cereal

Bedtime snack: Raisin Bran with a banana and milk.

… and enjoying my daily cappuccinos…

Foamy Cappuccino

… things have been pretty random around these parts. Take this salad, for example…

Salad Snack

snackWho the heck am I!? I can’t even remember the last time I craved veggies for a snack, but I found myself wanting chicken and hot sauce one afternoon and hey… who am I to question a craving. Actually, I take that back – I have been questioning my cravings. You guys know I have a huge sweet tooth, right? Well, lately I’ve been passing up the saccharine seducers and gravitating more towards… salt…

Popchips

Sour Cream and Onion Popchips.

Salsa with a Spoon

Salsa, straight from the jar.

Hummus and Chips

Hummus and anything I can stick in it (ie: chips, veggies, spoon, finger…)

Yeah, don’t ask me – I can’t explain it either. You needn’t be too concerned just yet, though; the sweet tooth has still been kicking in from time to time…

Chocolate Pudding

Zensoy Chocolate Vanilla pudding.

Chocolate Oat Bran

Oat bran made with coconut milk, then mixed with yogurt and topped with chocolate.

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Muffin

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Muffins. I needed a break from cookies and went the muffin route instead.

And I guess I should probably mention that I’ve been eating actual meals as well, and not just snacking all day.

English Muffins for Lunch

Lunch: English muffin topped with avocado and jam, carrot sticks, salad.

Pumpkin Chili

Dinner: pumpkin chili Mexican scramble with Annie’s cheddar bunnies.

So there we have it: the food that’s been keeping me going as of late. And speaking of going, it’s time for me to run (figuratively speaking). Between work and volunteering, today is going to be a long day indeed.

Have a good one, friends!

. – . – . – .

What was the last craving you satisfied?
Have you experienced any “what the heck?!” cravings lately?

Peanut Butter! I feel like if it is not in my breakfast my day is incomplete! For snacks, definitely sweet! I make my own granola bars a lot!

So…I really want one of those muffins. They look delicious!
I’m always a sweet snack sort of person. Yogurt/cottage cheese and fruit or nut butter, sweet protein bars, daily chocolate…all necessary on the regular.
I don’t usually get salty cravings! Although, I crave sushi like 98% of the time and I had some yesterday, which made me happy :-D

I think something is in the air because dare I say that my sweet tooth has mellowed a bit and salt is my new BFF? Gasp! It started right around when we went on the cruise so I’m gonna blame it on the warm weather and all of the hard work aka “sweating” I did laying out by the pool and on the beach :P No but really, I’m still starting my day on a sweet note but have been adding in salty bits such as eggs + avocado, pretzels, Popchips [we stocked up at Costco this weekend], nuts, you name it… The bag of dark chocolate covered pretzels I got on Saturday is already gone.

Well it’s still pretty cold around these parts, so I can’t blame it on warmer weather and sweating by the pool :P I’m just thankful that my sweet tooth is still around for breakfast, because the day I switch to starting my morning with something savory is the day I start to worry

The same thing has strangely happened to me! – i have the biggest sweet tooth, but for the past couple weeks i’ve found myself craving salty snacks. So weird! Two weeks ago all I was craving was miso soup which was so strange because I’m not a big soup person, nor have I ever really like miso soup. Guess I just wanted that saltiness. I’ve still been getting my fair share of sweetness…just with more saltiness mixed in now :)

Funny how you mention it. I’m usually all about my sweet meals and snacks but have been craving salty foods in the evening lately. The last craving I satisfied was a sweet one, though: One of the raw Chi(a) balls with various kinds of sprouted seeds and dried fruit in it. Sticky, sweet, delish.

My favourite snacks are granola, coconut flour yogurt (still!), almond butter and fruit. I’m in a real snack rut, though, and know I’ll have to change it up.

Oh, where are you volunteering? I used to do at a nursery home, too, but had to stop when university started.

Your meals always look so tasty! Random question for you though, I know you live in Edmonton so where do you grocery shop? You always have different brands of food that I’ve never seen in the grocery stores I go to lol. Or I just don’t look in the right places. Do you frequent any of the health stores? Or are you just a lucky blogger who gets lots of stuff sent to you? :)

The cheddar bunnies in your dinner was a nice touch! I love them. Anything cheesy in the shape of cute animals is my fave. I’m bookmarking the chocolate chip oatmeal muffins for later. SO GOOD. I’ve been craving some weird stuff lately too. like a bagel and chocolate milk yesterday for lunch? Okay… that’s strange. But I’m just taking it and going with it. Volunteering, sounds interesting. What are you volunteering in, if you don’t mind to share?

And I am actually always happy to see WIAW like yours. I am a snack-person. My main meals are pretty small and I keep them healthy, because I love to snack on chocolate, yogurt, fruit, cereal … throughout the day. And seriously – I am talking throughout the whole day here. I cannot believe when people claim to have a “snacking-problem” because they had like a banana and a sandwich additional to their 3-meals a day. I have days which are like breakfast, yogurt, fruit, chocolate, lunch, cereal-bar, fruit with peanut butter, carrots, piece of toast, dinner, chocolate. And I am actually hungry, but then again my meals also look like snacks those days, since I am not that hungry to have a proper meal. Guess we just have to accept that days like this will come and go and on another day we are happy that 3 meals fit into the busy (or lazy, I tend to be like that on Sundays) schedule.

As for snacks (or just in general) I LOVE salt. It’s actually one of the biggest vices in my healthy lifestyle. My mom loves salt too and we were never allowed to add salt to our food as children for fear that we would become salt-a-holics..well, I have. My blood pressure is fine though (thankfully). I’m gonna attribute that to my otherwise healthy living.. I’ve been craving peanut butter and animal crackers… but I haven’t given into that craving yet, even though I have both in the house..

Your eats always make me simultaneously smile and cry.
Your lunch: I want it…looks so simple, and good on the tummy…but i’m not “allowed” because its not enough protein and gluten…
:(
Your bedtime snack: again so simple and wonderful…but i’m not “allowed” because its too small and not enough protein ( so instead i eat 200 grams of yogurt with 4 tbsps of nut butter and 2 giant oranges at 11 pm )
:(
Your popchips? I bought them for my mom…she ate them in a flash…i stared at them
:(
Terra chips in the cupboard…but i’m not “allowed” cause i just binged on 500 calories of yogurt, fruit, and pumpkin seed butter….and i don’t ever (ever ) exercise
:(

so
up a creek without a paddle

worse is that i have serious cramping, energy and digestive, and ahem, bowel, issues…and need to elminate eggs and dairy for a long while….pretty sure i’m going to be uber lost without them…seriously….lots to figure out. not fun.

keep snacking up girl. and add a half jar of nut butter to your beddtime snack :) make me sane.

Gotta go with those cravings!! I’ve been craving salty things a lot too, which oddly that’s what I crave when I get sick. I think it’s the dehydration/electrolyte factor, flu makes me a little sodium depleted….hence my pop chips for breakfast LOL. I think during my normal life I actually crave salt more than sweet because I sweat so much (especially in summer), but again, makes sense. Anyway not to get all scientific, food is food haha. I’m totally with you on the salsa, chips, hummus, avocado, hot sauce, chicken, veggies trend right now!

64 Amanda @ .running with spoons. February 6, 2013 at 8:55 pm

I tend to crave saltier things a lot more in the summer too, but it makes no sense because it’s still freezing outside right now! And my doctor actually recommended that I eat a little bit more sodium because I have pretty low blood pressure all the time, so it helps keep me from feeling like I’m going to pass out.

I’ve actually been craving banana softserve lately after having it again last week after a long hiatus. Luckily I have a few bananas that are almost ready to be made into ‘ice cream’…

Want a “what the heck” craving? I’ll give you one. Just one because you won’t be able to stop laughing if I reveal more. Last week I had this craving for tinned sardines and sauerkraut. Together. With some paprika on top. This was the ugliest meal I’ve ever had (mashing the sardines with a spoon didn’t help the appearance much :D ) but, oh boy, was it delicious! Simply amazing!

Beat that :P

Ever since I can remember I’ve had a soft spot for savory foods. My mum had to force me to eat my slice of chocolate cake after dinner because I just wasn’t interested. Then for a few years I craved chocolate more than anything. I thought it was because it was on the list of forbidden foods but even after that I kept eating copious amounts of chocolate and cookies. Now I’ve stopped again. I’ve bought only one package of cookies since the beginning of the year and I don’t really miss them. I never thought that fixing the chemical mess in my brain would help me git rid of the unnatural sugar cravings.

Btw, the banana and cocoa powder idea is already in use. Yum!

The last craving I satisfied was for sushi, but since I had to work, there was no going out SO I made a sushi-fied salad…topped that baby with tuna, cucumber, carrots, avocado, pickled ginger and then doused it in this amazing soy/teriyaki sauce I picked up at Trader Joes! It was AMAZING!

My “what the heck” craving lately (and for the last several weeks actually) has been for tomatoes. I picked up a huge carton of grape tomatoes at the warehouse store a few weeks ago and polished that thing off in like 4 days! And mostly just from popping them in my mouth like they were popcorn! Lol

Most of my snacks tend to be on the sweeter side…fruit, yogurt, or my latest…cauliflower dessert pizza! I’ve been eating them nonstop all week!

Random cravings always crack me up. Recently, I found myself really wanting a pancake at 4 pm…so I made it happen. Whatever works.

Avocado and jelly sandwich?! That’s a new one! Have you heard of Sprint 2 the Table’s “Weird but Good” link-up??
